This is achieved in his buildingsthrough the use of geometricessentials like circles, squares, and equilateral triangles and by

using "perpetuating typology," inthis case the portico, a designelement that has been

historically successful and stillhas a public function.

The wings of the two street

elevations use stone porticoes, acontrast with the brick claddingelsewhere and a way of

emphasizing the porch that is afeature of much traditionalNorthern Italian architecture.

Aldo Rossis used the historicalurban structure of the division of

land into small plots as hisconcept for QuartierSchtzenstrasse.

The individualized houses signalindividual plots but the totalnumber of facades exceeds thenumber of houses standing

independently of each other. While two of the buildings are

    reserved exclusively for

    The Quartier Schtzenstrasse is

a collage of icons and archetypeswith several obvious referencesto other Rossi buildings as wellas historical references.

Schtzenstrasse 8 is a copy ofthe courtyard facade of thePalazzo Farnese in Rome, built in

1516 by Antonio Sangallo, thatwas modified by Michelangelo.

    The court yard facade copies

three of the centre line of

The path through the smallest, ornamental courtyard behind the

Palazzo Farnese. The intense colorfulness, inspired by the colors of antiquearchitecture, tie the block

together and draws attention tothe allotment structure, whichdistinguishes the individualhouses.

Rossi used particular colors forparticular facade materials; themore "artificial" the material, the

    more "vivid" the color.
