Even though Elder
Chauncey D. Brown,
Pastor of Greater
Williams Chapel Free
Will Baptist Church, has
only been in Homestead
a little over a year, he
has already touched
many lives in the com-
munity. Councilman
Elvis R. Maldonado,
who recently attended
service at the Pastor’s
church, wanted to recog-
nize the mark that Elder
Brown has made in the
Homestead community
“The message that he brought during service had me on my feet and it
truly inspired me,” said Councilman Maldonado, Liaison to the Home-
stead Education Committee. “One of the things he said during the ser-
vice that I will never forget was that we need to stop complaining when
our children misbehave if we do not help them and get involved in their
education. Pastor Brown spoke about how the children in our commu-
nity are the responsibility of all of us and that message truly inspired
me. He is working on programs to engage our youth so he lives that
message.”
Elder Chauncey Brown’s ministry spans over 20 years. He has worked
in various areas of education and has developed programs to keep chil-
dren in school when adversity happens, HIV/AIDS pre and post coun-
seling, domestic violence education and many other community based
activities.

Councilman Elvis R. Maldonado Joins Latino
Leaders in Orlando for NALEO National Institute on Emergency Response and Management
Councilman Maldonado and more than 45 other policymakers
will receive Department of Homeland Security certification
following completion of natural disaster and emergency
response training.
Orlando, FL – Councilman Maldonado joined the National
Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials
(NALEO) Educational Fund and more than 45 Latino public
officials from across the country to discuss issues relating to
emergency response and community preparedness at the Na-
tional Policy Institute on Emergency Response and Management convening. The two-and-half day event took place
from November 22-24, 2013 at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort in Orlando, FL.
Councilman Maldonado and other policymakers participating in the Institute had an opportunity to work directly with
emergency preparedness officials to enhance their understanding of multi-agency coordination and the incident com-
mand system, a systematic tool used for the command, control, and coordination of emergency response situations.
Councilman Maldonado will receive a certificate indicating his participation in the Department of Homeland Security
overview and training.
With disaster becoming more common and costly - and with some regions enduring multiple disasters - the importance
of building community resilience and preparedness during emergency response has never been greater.
“Given South Florida’s well documented history bearing the brunt of so many destructive hurricanes, it stands to rea-
son that we need to take emergency preparedness with utmost seriousness,” said Councilman Maldonando. A life-long
resident of Homestead. “Like you, I remember Hurricane Andrew all too well. While we are ultimately helpless to stop
nature’s course, we can always do a better job heeding our early warning systems and our first responder’s directives
to keep our communities out of harm’s way.”
The timely Institute highlighted ways elected officials can promote emergency preparedness to help their respective
communities respond to and recover from natural disasters, pandemics and other hazards. The event, which is the sec-
ond NALEO Educational Fund convening focused on emergency response issues, also addressed the important role
that policymakers can play as an information broker to immigrant and non-English speaking residents during times of
crisis in their communities.
At the Institute, Councilman Maldonado heard from a number of elected officials and experts on how to ensure their
respective communities are prepared in the event of a natural disaster or emergency including a Federal Emergency
Management Agency Director of Individual and Community Preparedness Gwen Camp, Former Mass. State Rep. and
American Red Cross of Massachusetts CEO Jarrett Tomás Barrios, City of Houston Mayor Pro Tem Ed Gonzalez and
LISTOS Co-Founder Gracie Huerta.
The National Policy Institute on Emergency Response and Management is made possible through the generous support
of Title Sponsor, State Farm®. A full schedule and list of speakers is available on the NALEO Educational Fund
website at http://www.naleo.org/emergencymanagement.html.

COUNCILMAN MALDONADO NEWS:
PAST & PRESENT
Education Committee Chair Councilman Elvis
Maldonado Awards Laptops for Schools
For the second year on a row,
the Homestead Education Com-
mittee awarded laptops to vari-
ous public schools in the City.
At the January Council meet-
ing, Councilman Elvis
Maldonado, Chair of the Edu-
cation Committee, presented
representatives from Home-
stead Senior High School,
Campbell Drive K-8, Campbell
Drive Middle School, West
Homestead Elementary School,
and Laura Saunders Elementary
School with a laptop to be
awarded to a deserving student.
“When I heard about this program I was very excited,” said Homestead Senior High Principal Cory Rod-
riguez, who received the two laptops for the school. “This is great help for what we are trying to achieve
in our school as far as increasing the number of computer labs and the number of students who have ac-
cess to computers so that they can be competitive individuals in this technological world.”
Councilman Maldonado said at the meeting that the computer donation to these schools that are in a
“feeder pattern” is one of the ways in which the Education Committee is helping push education in
Homestead. “We want to do everything we can to help our students be successful,” said Councilman
Maldonado. “I’ve said this time and again: education is the building block to this great City. We are go-
ing to continue working to make a difference in our children’s lives.”
The school representatives shared stories as to how they had awarded the laptops last year and the im-
pact it had on the students. Campbell Drive K-8 reading coach and teacher Julie Nuhfer-Gonzalez ex-
plained that last year when they received the laptop they created an award called “The Elvis Maldonado
and Education Committee Award,” and presented it to a student for best overall achievement in citizen-
ship and academia.
“The child who won did not have a computer at home so imagine the difference in that student’s life
who can now do research for her homework and not be at a disadvantage,” said Nuhfer-Gonzalez. “This
year students have already been asking about the computer giveaway, they are excited about the oppor-
tunity to have a computer.”
