HABITAT CONSERVATION

Dersingham NNR forms partof what was once a vast heath, which stretched the entirelength of the north-westNorfolk Greens and escarpmentfrom King’s Lynn to Heacham. Itis now part of the SandringhamRoyal Estate and managed forits wildlife by Natural England.

A wide variety of habitats isfound on this site, includingdry heathland, wet heathland, acid valley mire, deciduouswoodland and coniferouswoodland. Alderhill haveworked at Dersingham formany years carrying out avariety of operations.

One of the mostinteresting is to assistin the restoration ofheathland by controllingcompeting species, whichis predominantly bracken. The site’s nature is varied, fromrelatively flat areas to large 45-degree slopes, so a flexibleapproach was necessary withtractor mounted boomlessspraying system and ATV basedapplications including weedwiping specialist equipment. One of the great pleasures oflong-term involvement on a sitesuch as this is that on each visitwe can appreciate the differenceour efforts have made.

Once again the team at Alderhill provided anexcellent, reliable service, carrying out habitat and accessprojects to enhance Dersingham. Through the use ofinnovative techniques to chemically treat bracken onchallenging terrain, the team significantly contributed tothe restoration of 60ha of dry heathland, benefiting rarespecies such as nightjar and woodlark. The footpathcreated through dense rhododendron growth hasprovided the public with a scenic woodland walk, whilstreducing disturbance to ground-nesting birds on theadjacent heathland.

AGRICULTURAL FENCING

After purchasing ClaxtonManor Estate on the edge ofthe Yare Valley, in early 2010,the new owners found theirlivestock fencing inadequateand had difficulties inmanaging public access routes.

Alderhill were called in toreplace existing fences withnew ones, and thus ensure thefarm’s suckler herd was secureand easier to manage. Ourservices were required to:

• Restore grazing boundaries• Help control public accessroutes

• Supply and erect appropriatefencing materials

A large number of gates wereinstalled on all major fieldentrances to preventunauthorised access; kissinggates were positioned onfootpaths to define permitted

access routes.A combination offencing types andstyles were selected for use throughout the estate, including high-tensile barbed wire, stock netting and rustic postand rail. All featured eithergalvanised or timber gates.

The fencing and associated works Alderhill hascarried out have greatly enhanced our livestock operationand allowed us to manage public access. I look forward toworking with them on future projects.

WOODLAND AND HEDGEROW ESTABLISHMENT

New woodlands and hedgesprovide many benefits, including increased biodiversity, green corridors with establishedhabitats and improved sportingamenities. The establishment ofnew woodlands may be carriedout independently or with theassistance of grants from theForestry Commission or othersources.

Alderhill successfully establishesmiles of new hedgerows andrejuvenates many existinghedges each year. These areoften part of Higher LevelStewardship schemes.

On themajority ofestates a range ofapproaches providelandowners with a well-balanced outcome, which is financially viable and meets environmentalrequirements. Our experiencedteams will:

• Appraise existing woodlandand hedgerow

• Prepare a planting schedule• Prepare and submit grantapplications

• Implement and oversee alloperations

From project planning through planting andaftercare, Alderhill always delivers the required results.

FORESTRY

Planted as a coniferous andbroadleaf mix some 35 yearsago, the woods at Palgravehad not been actively managedfor some years.

It was the client’s wish to bringthese assets back into an activeforestry plan. They favoured astaged conversion that wouldgive native broadleaved speciesdominance.

After carefuldiscussion and a site meeting,Alderhill prepared a schedule of proposedworks for eachcompartment and obtained

a felling licence and relevantgrants from the ForestryCommission. Each woodlandarea was thinned by selectivefelling that favoured the besthardwoods. Replanting wascarried out to the appropriatedensity and the timber wasmarketed.

I used Alderhill because of their excellentreputation and was very impressed with their knowledgeand professional, friendly service.

LANDSCAPING

A major feature of thepicturesque grounds at SahamGrove is the moat. However,in recent years there had beennoticeable deterioration of thestructural side-wall. Alderhillwere asked to suggest suitablemethods of restoring it.

After consultation with theowner it was decided toreplace the existing revetmentwith a pressure-treated timberstructure. The type of timbertreatment was specificallyselected to ensure it would not prove detrimental toaquatic life.

The moat was partially drained, leaving sufficient water toensure minimal wildlifedisturbance. The new timberwas then driven into the basematerial of the moat. Lowground pressure excavator

mountedequipment wasused to ensureminimal damage to the surrounding grounds. The moat was refilled andsoon recovered its formerbeauty.

Having used Alderhill for other projects on theestate, I am delighted they carried out an awkward taskwith excellent results, negligible damage and disturbanceto existing features.
