Managing the Full Digital HomeCommunication services are con -stantly evolving. Today your focus is on providing triple-play services.Soon, you will move to convergedfixed-mobile service offerings. Eachservice wave brings along a specificset of devices that you need to man -age — from residential gateways,set-top boxes and VoIP phones tofemto cell gateways. The heteroge -neous nature of home networks willrequire integrated management of allthese devices, whatever their vendor.
Overcome the Mass Management ChallengeThe growing number of homes to carefor — and the heterogeneous natureof devices and services — have turnedthe home network into a source ofmany potential problems. Complexityis further increased by the ongoingneed for firmware upgrades, bug fixesand new service rollouts. So new toolsare essential to help you master thisintensified complexity and the associ -ated mass management challenge.
Keeping Operational Costs Under ControlBecause the current competitiveenvi ronment is forcing you to reduceyour operational costs, you need to

The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM provides extended digital home man age -
ment capabilities. It sup ports your fulfillment and assurance processes
with advanced automation and trou bleshooting capabilities. Based on
DSL Forum manage ment standards, the solution allows you to provide
multi vendor CPE management capability.
A Truly Multivendor CPEManagement SolutionThe DSL Forum has finalized TR-069and associated digital home manage -ment standards. These have beendefined to enable multivendor man -agement of customer premises equip -ment. The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNMfully complies with TR-069 and asso -ciated standards, making it the mostadvanced multivendor manage mentsolution on the market. CPE inter -op erability is thoroughly tested toprovide openness and rapid deploy -ment. This offers you increasedflexibil ity in CPE selection andevolution strategy.
Enables Automated MassManagement OperationsThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM bringsautomation to unprecedented levels. It supports grouped operations thatexecute management operations fora wide set of devices in a single oper -ator action. It also supports an intel -ligent policy engine that triggersmanagement operations, upon vali -dation of dynamic criteria. Suchpolicies can trigger quick operationalreactions to any manage ment eventsas they arise.
Accelerates Introduction of New Devices and ServicesThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM canmanage new device types or releaseswith no adaptations. New devices canbe supported on the fly, while the sys -tem continues operating. This helpsyou cope with the fast-changingnature of your digital home ecosystem. For instance, the Alcatel-Lucent5580 HNM can easily cope with theintro duction of innovative video serv -ice or take over the management ofnew femto cell gateways as you launchnew fixed mobile service offerings.
Supports Flexible Deployment and Operational ModesThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM canbe used as a full fledged managementtool for your daily requirements whileacting as a proxy for OSS-driven man -age ment operations. It can also sup -port strict management contextseparation, enabling a single systemto be used by several internal or exter -nal organ iza tions. This allows you towork in a local loop unbundling con -text, by granting management accessto third-party service providers, offer -ing retail services on top of youraccess infrastructure.

Remote Device Management Based on DSL Forum TR-069
The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM implements the WAN-side managementprotocol described in the DSL Forum TR-069 standard. TR-069 specifies a protocol stack, connectivity and object model for the management of modemsand residential gateways. The TR-069 standard has been extended with TR-111to allow management of devices behind a NAT residential gateway. Connectivitybetween the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM and home devices is established basedon HTTP and IP protocols, making the link-layer independent and suitable forany service provider (access provider, Internet service provider [ISP] or appli -cation provider).
The TR-069 protocol is CPE-driven, as the CPE connects periodically to themanagement system. The CPE also contacts the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNMon specific events such as reboot and IP address change. This communicationis complemented with a connection request mechanism, permitting theAlcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM to contact the CPE at any time.

Working with the MotiveSmart verification program, Alcatel-Lucent
is engaged in thorough interoper ability testing with more than
40 market-leading CPE vendors. Tests check conformance to TR-069
and associated standards and are executed according to PD-128
specifications.

Intelligent Policy EngineAn intelligent policy engine is imple ment ed to provide a high level ofautomation for day-to-day opera tions, including initial device activa tion and configuration, configuration updates, proactive maintenance and trou -bleshooting. Detailed reporting is provided to inform operators of the state of a given policy — typically sta tistics on successfully executed actions, aborted actions or on-going retries.
Multiple Device Activation Scenarios“Zero-touch” activation offers your subscribers the ability to activate newdevices simply and easily. The objec tive of the initial device activation is togive the device access to your Internet network, configure the device forthe services subscribed and enable the Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM to take overdevice management.
The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM sup ports three main device activationscenarios, allowing you to choose those that best suit your needs, with easyadaptation as your services and processes evolve.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM in ActionDevices and services involve variousmanagement operations, includingservice provisioning, security, trafficpolicing and troubleshooting. Theseneed to be controlled by operators, customer support personnel or even bycustomers themselves. The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM is a full-fledgedmanagement system, operated viagraphical user interface. As shown inFigure 4, it can also serve as a manage -ment hub, performing operations onbehalf of OSS applications, includingprovisioning or traffic policing, orfrom customer support or customerself-care solutions.

Managing New Devices on the Fly The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM canmanage new device types or releaseson the fly. For that purpose, you cansimply load the object model of thedevice in an XML form. The Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM will take overmanagement of the device with noneed for further adaptation.
Interaction in Your OSS EnvironmentThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM pro -vides a northbound interface to com -mu nicate with higher level OSSs. Thisinterface is implemented through a setof high-level primitives covering serv -ice provisioning, device configuration, software management, etc. These
primitives provide a powerful meansfor OSS applications to performmanagement operations on one orseveral devices with a single command.
System ArchitectureThe Alcatel-Lucent 5580 HNM hasbeen developed as a J2EE application, making it independent of the under -lying operating system. The JavaVirtual Machine shields the applica -tion server from the underlying hard -ware. The Alcatel-Lucent uses BEAWebLogic, but owing to the use ofJ2EE, it can be easily adapted to othermiddleware systems (e.g., Jboss).Hibernate provides the same inde -pendence for the database technologyand enables smooth migration fromOracle to any other database system.
