Good numbers of students have already been enrolled in Prep/Kinder and Year 7 – traditionally our major intake years. I take this opportunity to urge current parents who might be planning to enrol any siblings at the College in 2013 to contact my Personal Assistant, Ms Heather Watson to make an appointment for an enrolment interview and to begin the process of completing the enrolment forms and sending these through in the lead up to this interview. It would be a terrible situation for current parents to miss the opportunity to enrol their next child on the misunderstanding that they had plenty of time to initiate and complete the enrolment process. Demands for positions are very strong, particularly in Kinder at the Albury campus and therefore it is imperative that parents begin this process to avoid disappointment! The College enrolment policies do not have any preferential treatment for current families. In this context, I hasten to add that of course we welcome the enrolment of the siblings of current students but we do not presume that this will occur automatically. Therefore it is important that we hear from parents sooner rather than later so that we can book in the enrolments before vacancies disappear in certain year levels. NSW Governor’s Visit to Albury Earlier this week the College Captains, Laura Slabbert, James Walsh and I had the honour of meeting with and having lunch with the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir. The Governor’s visit had been instigated and organised by Fr Peter McLeod-Miller friend of Trinity and Parish Priest of St Matthew’s Parish in Albury. The Governor had been invited to spend some time in Albury meeting and talking with the youth of Albury and to discuss the challenges and opportunities which face the young people of the region. School Captains from several High Schools in Albury were in attendance and Her Excellency did not miss the opportunity to talk with these young people and provide them with an opportunity to express their views on a range of important subjects.

That night at St Matthew’s Church, the Governor presented an enlightened speech about her view of the many opportunities open to our young people, the mental health issues that we need to be aware of and how we, as parents and teachers can support our young people through their schooling and their road towards a successful and fulfilling career. The evening event also showcased a number of musical items from young Albury musicians who were all very well received.

I thank Fr Peter for initiating this opportunity and also to Laura and James for accepting the invitation to meet with the Governor and to support these events.

Grandparents’ Days As we enter the month of March we are looking forward to welcoming the Grandparents of our Junior School students to the College on our scheduled Grandparents’ Days. These special afternoons are scheduled for the Wodonga campus on Friday, 16 March and at the Albury campus on Friday, 23 March, both from 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Invitations and reminders will be sent home via student diaries in the days ahead and I hope that as many Grandparents and other special people will be able to come along on these days to see their Grandchildren’s classrooms, meet their teachers, have a tour of the College and enjoy an afternoon tea at the end of this process.

Grandparents’ Day is always one of the great days on the calendar in the Junior School at both campuses of the College! I am looking forward to welcoming our visitors to the College in a few weeks time!

Telstra Connect Seniors Event Last week the College hosted an event run by Telstra which was designed to help senior citizens in the local community to better understand the resources available to them via the internet and smart phones. Students from Years 10 and 11 were asked to volunteer to give up some of their time to work with these people and to patiently take them through, step by step these resources and how they could access them.

I congratulate these students who proved to be wonderful ambassadors for themselves, their families and of course, the College. I was very proud of them and very pleased to receive really positive feedback from the personnel from Telstra and more recently from some of the senior citizens who participated in the event.

Well done! Steven J O’Connor

Principal

From the Deputy Principal

Last Thursday, 23 February, 41 students from Years 10 and 11 volunteered their time to assist Telstra with a programme called ‘Connected Seniors’. The programme is designed to help older members of the Albury/Wodonga community get the most out of their mobile phones and demystify the internet.

Telstra has been running Connected Seniors workshops since 2007. Our senior students helped to guide the participants

through the hands-on sessions and the feedback about their participation was extremely positive. We are very proud of the students who were involved in this local initiative.

Having Trinity students involved in community service activities is an excellent opportunity for our students to help others while building their own skill set. I thank all of the students for being such good ambassadors for the College, even though it did mean that throughout the day they did miss some scheduled classes. A special mention goes to the following 10 students who volunteered to assist with the programme well after the school day had finished, being prepared to

stay onsite until the final session was completed at 6.00 pm; Morgan Howe, Annalyse Russell, Greg Andronikos, Latna Williams, Ashleigh Fee, Annabelle Orton, Tom Coates, Ryan McKewen, Rebecca Lane and Maddison Stein.

As a sign of their appreciation Telstra have donated an HTC Sensation Andriod Smart Phone, valued at approximately $600, to the College. To ensure the good work done by students is acknowledged senior students will sell raffle tickets for $2.00 per ticket to raise funds to purchase more outdoor furniture for the Senior School. Students, parents, staff and friends can purchase tickets from students each Lunch time for the next 10 days and the raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of Senior School Chapel on Wednesday, 21 March. (As the donated phone was supplied by Telstra the phone is locked to the Telstra network).

The Senior Schools Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday, 14 March. All students can wear the correct College Sports Uniform to and from school for that day. They must ensure that they are wearing correct footwear and hats. If a student is leaving from Alexandra Park and not returning to school they must have presented their Pastoral Care Tutor with a note from their parents giving permission to do so, prior to the day. Any student who does not have a note or says that their parents have given permission verbally will not be allowed to leave from the carnival and will be expected to return to school via the buses.

In the past the Athletics carnival has been a very positive event with many students willingly participating in many events. This often leads to presentations having to be completed at school in the following days. It has also become quite apparent that many students appreciate the opportunity to represent their House. Consequently for many field events, time only allows two attempts rather than the accepted three. I ask all students and parents to appreciate the efforts of all students and to understand these modifications to our carnival and the positive reasons behind them.

The deadline for the national academic competitions is Monday 12 March. If students would like to enter any of these competitions you will need to complete the nomination form, check carefully that the age group for the competition is appropriate for your child. The nomination form should be returned with the student’s name and Year group to Pastoral Care Tutors. Due to closing dates for these external competitions no nominations will be accepted after this date.

Year 9 News

It has been very pleasing to see so many year 9 students begin the 2012 school year in such a positive manner. During Long Pastoral Care we have begun by focusing on two areas:

1. General fitness Once a week the students have been participating in various activities to improve their overall fitness levels. The focus has been on participation, fun, and personal improvement with all students aiming to improve their strength, endurance and flexibility by the end of the term.

2. Habits Habits are things we do repeatedly. But most of the time we are hardly aware we have them. The students have been discussing:

Good habits, such as:

Exercising regularly

Respecting others

Bad habits, like:

Talking behind people’s backs

Blaming others

The major focus over the next few weeks will be on becoming more Proactive, with students being encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions and behaviours. Some of the areas we will look at include:

Their selection of language.

‘Victimitis’ – people who feel everyone has it in for them and the world owes them something.

Controlling ourselves and our attitudes.

Dealing with setbacks.

Adventure Training Students in 9E will participate in their training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday of Week 6. We have a number of guests involved in the sessions which include, First Aid, Mapping and Compass work, Route Planning, essential equipment and their use, and food and nutrition. These activities will be conducted on site and will prepare the students for their upcoming Trial Journeys in Week 8.

From the Wodonga Campus

Last Wednesday our Junior School students represented the College at the VPS Zone Swimming carnival at the Wodonga Olympic Pool. Mackensey and Blaynee House did exceptional jobs in their events, as did the College Medley relay team which consisted of Laura Chase, Ella Baker, Mackensey and Blaynee House.

Mackensey, Blaynee, Laura and Ella have now advanced through to the VPS Regional Swim team to compete at Shepparton on Wednesday 7 March. Congratulations to all students who represented the College in such an excellent manner. I was able to personally witness a number of the events and it was pleasing to see our students do their best and represent the College in such a sporting manner. Next year I hope we see even more Trinity students doing well at this event.

In addition, I thought it important to pass on a nice message from Ian Prenter, the VPS Convenor.

“I don’t go round looking for support but it certainly makes you appreciate work more and I was quite taken aback by the student of yours who came and thanked me on behalf of your school. Thanks again for your continued support.”

Our ‘Grandparent’s Day’ celebration is coming up on Friday, 16 March and the College welcomes all grandparents, family friends and members of the Trinity community to come and help recognise the importance family plays in developing our future leaders of the community.

The afternoon’s events will commence at 1.30 pm with a brief Assembly followed by some tours conducted by students of the College for their guests and an afternoon of the students and guests playing games and demonstrating some of the learning done at the College.

Finally, a reminder that Parent Teacher interviews commence for the P-6 classes on Monday, 5 and Tuesday, 6 March. Mr O’Neill has been providing information on how to make a booking in previous newsletters. If you haven’t booked in to see a teacher and wish to, please follow the instructions outlined in Mr O’Neill’s article last week to book a suitable time.

Our Year 5-6 students recently took part in their annual windsurfing sessions conducted by John Shaw’s Yarrawonga Windsurfing School. The day was brilliant with prefect conditions for the students to learn their skills on the

water. By the end of the day the students were able to complete a 4km round trip on the water across Lake Mulwala.

The experience is one that enhances the students’ knowledge of water safety, including how to self rescue, as well as developing their own sense of self confidence and persistence. Thank you to Peter Baker and Paul Schubert who accompanied the trip, and no doubt enjoyed the opportunity to try out windsurfing themselves.

National Year of Reading

This year at the College, we are supporting the National Year of Reading across both the Junior and Senior Schools. We are introducing a range of reading based activities, including book clubs for students and a number of competitions and special events. We will be reviewing a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, for inclusion in the newsletter and welcome any guests reviewers from our parents and families! If you would like to contribute to our series of reviews, please contact me.

We would also really like to encourage the place of reading in the whole

family so ask you to try and model reading, become involved in reading

with your children and talk about what your children are reading.

From the Director of Studies

In 2012, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit for the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The main purpose of NAPLAN is to assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools. The results of these tests will provide important information for teachers and parents. In particular, they will help inform teachers in their ongoing efforts to address the literacy and numeracy needs of their students. The national assessment is designed to provide information on student performance across a number of levels of achievement. Background information is collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained. The tests will be held from Tuesday 15 May - Thursday 17 May 2012. We would expect all of our students in those identified year levels to complete the tests.

Parents do have the right to withdraw their child. Withdrawals are intended to address issues associated with religious beliefs or philosophical objections to testing. These matters should be considered in consultation with the Principal and a signed consent form is required before a withdrawal is confirmed by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority.

Students with confirmed disabilities or difficulties in learning are expected to participate in the tests. Access to special provisions and exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school’s Learning Support Team and the school Principal, and a parent consent form must be signed.

During the latter part of Term 3 parents will receive reports about their child’s performance on these nationally benchmarked tests. Parents might like to view sample test materials that are available at www.naplan.edu.au, and discuss the tests with their children. Additional information regarding NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html and at

www.naplanforparentsnsw.com.au

Staff will spend some time preparing the students for the tests.

Please contact me at the College if you have any questions or concerns regarding the NAPLAN testing.

Anaphylaxis * IIMMPPOORRTTAANNTT RREEMMIINNDDEERR ** Dear Parents Please be aware that we have students who attend the College with severe allergies who may experience Anaphylaxis, if exposed to nuts, sesame seeds and poppy seeds. These include all tree nuts as well as peanuts.

We therefore ask that you are aware of the food products you send to school. Please consider all food including rolls, slices, muffins, food bars that may contain nuts, sesame seeds or poppy seeds. We wish to do everything in our power to prevent these children experiencing an anaphylactic attack and prevent other students witnessing such. We appreciate your assistance with this matter.

Clean up Australia Day

Clean up Australia Day is fast approaching. Clean up Australia is scheduled to take place at Trinity Junior School on Friday, 2 March. On the day the staff and students will be downing their academic tools to roll up their sleeves, slop on some sunscreen, pull on their gloves and don their hats to work together to make our School clean and free of litter. The children will learn a valuable lesson about the importance of a clean environment, sustainability and how working together makes a tough and sometimes unpleasant job fun and much easier to manage. For hygiene purposes it would be appreciated if you could supply rubber or garden gloves for your child to wear during the clean-up. The students are required to wear their Sports Uniform for the day.

In Thurgoona the assembly point for the Clean Up Australia Day event to be conducted by the Thurgoona Lions Club is the Football Ground, Old Sydney Road. Should you wish to be part of the broader community effort being held on Sunday, 4 March, I encourage you to spread the word and tell your friends and family to register for Clean Up Australia Day 2012 by going to the link http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/

commenced Week 4B within the Junior School. Students are encouraged to bring their lunch to school in minimal disposable wrapping or in containers/bags that are reusable. Each day classes will collect points based on their lunchboxes. Points are tallied at the end of the week. Highest point scorers receive the Nude Food Trophy for the week. At the end of each term the class with the highest points will receive a new board game for their classroom, donated by the SRC. Thank you.

Canteen News - Albury

Many thanks to volunteers Jenny Moyle, Karen McLean and Tracy Stuart.

Lunch Bags - Please do not use sticky tape or staples on lunch bags. Simply folding the bag is generally sufficient to secure the money.

Money - Please refer to your child’s classroom teacher in the Junior School for guidance as to how much money might be appropriate to send to school to spend at the Canteen (I am not talking about ordered lunches, rather spending money). Some little people are bringing largish notes to school ($10 upwards) which are easy to lose and difficult for them to manage.

Volunteers Yes, still seeking volunteers!

From the Music Department – Albury “Blow your Own Horn”

The “Blow Your Own Horn” band programme has not been able to commence this year due to our Band Master, David Thompson requiring back surgery. We are expecting him to be fit and well in a few weeks. He will let the College know when he is able to return.

We have many new students here at the College and I encourage them to consider the “Blow Your Own Horn” band programme, a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved in a band experience with minimal cost to parents. “Blow Your Own Horn” is a band programme for beginning instrumentalists. It has been a successful programme introduced to the College in 2010.

Interested students from Years 5 to 8 will receive free group tuition for a range of band instruments including Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trombone, and Trumpet from band leader David Thompson. The groups will then gather together as a band after learning basic skills. If parents are interested in private tuition at any time, this can be arranged through the College.

Students will need to provide their own instruments and music books. There are hire companies that will be able to assist you in this (hiring information can be supplied by Mrs Brennan).

Please indicate if you are interested in the “Blow Your Own Horn” Helena Brennan
