A message from the Principal
Welcome back to Term 3 2019. I hope that everyone had a relaxing break and the chance to
recharge enough to get through another very busy 10 week term. A few of the immediate dates
and events are listed on page 2. Don’t hesitate to contact the school if you require any further
information on any of the events listed.
At the end of last term we farewelled Mrs Rebecca Border unexpectedly. Mr Bruce Hill has
returned to Albury PS and will teach 5AB for the rest of the year. We would like to welcome Mr Hill
back and wish Mrs Border all the very best. Miss Tracey Dawson is taking a well-earned long
service leave for Term 3 and intends to travel amongst other things. Mr Peter Waters is teaching
1MD for Term 3. We are very excited to have both Mr Hill and Mr Waters back at Albury PS as
both teachers know the school and will continue to follow established routines and programs.
Welcome back to Mrs Tanner who has been on leave for the last three weeks of last term.
On Monday the staff participated in the Term 3 staff development day. We furthered our school
improvement journey with Curiosity and Powerful Learning; continued work on our
implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning; started our school self-assessment for the
annual report and looked at poverty in Australia and its effects on students in our school.
For any recent visitors to the school, you will have noticed the new greenspace. What an
amazing outcome for our playground, the creation of more quiet, green space that will be
available to all students to enjoy shortly. We are currently
planning an outdoor library and beanbags for the area and
will encourage the area to be used for more passive
reaction in the warmer months. Unfortunately, in the
meantime, we have to stay off the grass (not the seating)
until the grass has had a good chance to take hold. An
enormous thanks to everyone for the contributions that have
led to this amazing addition to our school, especially Fiona
Slade, Border landscapes, the P&C and all of our community
who has contributed through fundraising. Collectively, we
are looking at other ways to spruce up our playground and
provide more activities and play opportunities for our
students, including additional basketball and volleyball nets
and courts. Stay tuned.
The school Paul Kelly cup team competed in the Paul Kelly
Cup competition at the end of last term in Wagga Wagga.
Yet again, the team was successful and will now compete in
Sydney at Giants Stadium in the Homebush precinct on
Monday 5 August. Well done, team. What an achievement!
Preparations are currently underway for the 15 boys and Mr
Takle to get to Sydney for the big event. Good luck.
Education Week is Week 3 of Term 3, beginning 5 August. This year, APS will have an open day on
Wednesday 7 August and will include our NAIDOC celebrations. The outline for the day is:
Education Week/NAIDOC Week Open Day, Wednesday 7 August
10-11am - Open classrooms and student-led conferencing
11-11.15am - Picnic lunch in the playground
11.15-11.45am - Games in the playground
11.45am-12.15pm - NAIDOC assembly
12.15-1.10pm - Whole school NAIDOC activity rotations
1.10-1.40pm - Afternoon recess
1.40-3pm - Whole school NAIDOC activity rotations (cont.)
Our Year 5 students depart for Ballarat next Wednesday 31 July at 6:30am and return on Friday 2 August
around 3:45pm. During this exciting excursion the students will visit the Museum of Australian Democracy in
Ballarat and Sovereign Hill. Please ensure that all medical and permission forms are returned by the end of
this week. Any medication that your child will require must be given to Mrs Scherf on Wednesday morning,
in its original packaging, clearly marked with the student’s name, class and dosage.
A great group of students (and their parents), from across the school, are combining to organise a “beanie
day” to raise money for the Starlight Foundation on Monday 12 August. Students will be able to buy
cookies and cupcakes on the day from $1.00 - $1.50 and everyone is encouraged to bring and wear a
beanie, for a gold coin donation.
Next Tuesday 30 July, MSP photographers will return to take the whole-school photo and the captain’s
photos as we ran out of time last term on photo day. Students are reminded to wear their full school
uniform in preparation for the photo.
Our first coffee and cake for Term 3 will be Wednesday 14 August. Mr Damian Toohey, Deputy Principal at
Albury HS, will be presenting a parent information session on teenagers, particularly focusing on boys, the
transition to high school and the social media world that we are currently living in. Damian will discuss,
among other things:
1. The three golden rules of being a boy at school
2. Hormones - testosterone and where that leads them
3. How we tell them to be aggressive in sport and then to switch it off in the playground!
4. Why is it that they look at me like I'm not speaking the same language?
5. Why has this little boy I have loved all of a sudden started treating me with disdain?
This session will be repeated later in the term, in a twilight session and is suitable for parents of all children,
especially those with pre-teens who are about to transition to high school. If you would like to attend,
please contact the school office to facilitate catering.
I would like to thank all of the parents/carers and family friends who collected the Woolworths Earn and
learn stickers last term. The school had a total of over 45 000 points at the end and this enabled us to claim
a significant amount of art, craft, sport and literacy resources. A huge thanks to Antoinette Roberts (on
behalf of the P&C) for coordinating and driving the collection and to Miss Mundy’s class and Mrs Border’s
class for leading the charge with transferring the stickers onto the cardboard charts. This was a massive
effort and we are very grateful for your contribution to the school.
The school dance troupe is competing in the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod next Tuesday at the Albury
Entertainment Centre. Miss Milham has been working overtime throughout the holidays, eagerly advised
by Miss Tegan Sutton, to create and sew the costumes. Good luck to the dance troupe and thank you to
Miss Milham for making this opportunity possible.
Next Friday Albury PS will host the amazingly talented Jonathan Welch, Choir of Hard Knocks (amongst
many other achievements) fame. Jonathan will be working with our school choir and students from other
Albury schools. This is such an exciting opportunity for our students and for Albury. The day will conclude
with a performance of what all the students have learnt during the day. For further details please see Mrs
Morris. A huge thank you to the Murray Conservatorium who have made this possible.
