SoilSoil Ecology, with special incidence on the nitrogen cycle

It is studied the plant-soil relationship, especially the influence of nitrogen fixing plants on soil.

It is measured the nitrogen input into the soil through the litter and through dinitrogen fixation and also the nitrogen flow through mineralization, nitrification and denitrification.

The edaphic microorganisms involved in these processes are studied and also the relationship existing not only among these microorganisms, but also between the plants and microrganisms (canopy and rizosphere effects), and the influence thet the environmental fluctuations have on these relationships.

Occasionally it is carried out some research in aquatic communities.

Rocks

• The predominant material of which the mountains are composed is granite.

• The mountains have undergone significant erosion since their formation, which is the reason why many peaks, especially in the northern and southern sections, have flattened summits.
