SITE NC02: HWY 22:30 WILLEY WEST PARK

1.0 OBSERVATIONS

1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status

Four slope indicators (SI, SI01-1, SI-3A, SI-4A, SI-10), one pneumatic piezometer (PN, PN01-1) and two standpipe piezometers (SP, SP01-1 and SP01-2) were read at the Willey West site on October 20, 2009 by Messrs. Matthew Weatherby, E.I.T. and Kevin Leopold, Engineering Assistant of EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd. (EBA).

The SIs were read with a Durham Geo Slope Indicator Digi Indicator probe with a 0.61 m (2 foot) wheelbase and Digi Datamate readout. Inclinometer reading depths were defined as per 0.61 m (2 foot) cable markings with respect to the top of the inclinometer casing.

The PN’s were read with an RST Petur C102 PN readout box. The SP’s were read with a Solonist water level meter.

2.0 INTERPRETATION

2.1 General

SI plots for the A and B directions as well as the SP and PN data are presented in Section D and are summarized in the attached tables. The depth and rate of movement recorded by the SIs is also presented in the attached tables.

Interpretation of the SI data was conducted as follows:

• Cumulative resultant movement - determined from the maximum value of resultant movements calculated from adjacent data points collected by the SI probe. These movements do not necessarily reflect the maximum cumulative movements at shear zones and therefore the depths reported at the cumulative resultant movement may differ from those reported in the SI monitoring summary table.

• Incremental movement since the previous reading - calculated by reporting the calculated maximum change in the resultant movement at the depth of the reported cumulative resultant movement.

• Current rate of movement - calculated based on the change in movement over a full year cycle at the depth of the maximum incremental movement.

2.2 Zones of Movement

New zones of movement were not recorded since the last set of readings in the spring of 2009. Historic rates of movement are presented in the attached rate plots which show deformations at various zones over time.

2.3 Interpretation of Monitoring Results

In general, there is no appreciable change in the rates of movement since the spring 2009 monitoring period. SI01-1A and SI-3A show an acceleration in movement of <1 mm/yr while SI-10 shows a deceleration of <1 mm/yr. SI-4A indicates no change in the rate of movement.

PN01-1 adjacent to SI01-1 showed an increase of pore water pressure equal to approximately 0.35 m of head. The two standpipes, SP01-1 and SP01-2, show no appreciable change in water level with a decrease of 0.05 and 0.02 m from the spring 2009 readings respectively. Piezometric elevations at PN01-1 are relatively stable over the past 3 years. SP01-1 showed erratic levels up until the past year and SP01-2 shows a steady, marginal decline over the past 3 years.

3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

3.1 Future Work

The instruments should be read again in the spring of 2010 at which time geodetic coordinates should be picked up by surveying the instruments from a control point with a known elevation.

3.0 INSTRUMENTATION REPAIR

Instrumentation repair is not required at this time.
