Alberta Building Products and Technologies Profile

Alberta’s Building Products and Technologies Industry

Alberta’s building products and technologies industry is one of the largest and strongest industries in the province with annual sales of $9.7 billion and 1,250 companies. Most of these companies are small to medium-sized and specialize in the manufacturing of high-quality and custom building products. Together, the companies within the building products and technologies industry employ more than 29,500 workers.

Due to the province’s varied climate, Alberta building products companies are world renowned for their expertise in energy efficient and cost effective products that ensure a building retains heat in the winter and stays cool in the summer. In fact, in 2015, Alberta claimed the number one ranking in Canada of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified space per resident. Alberta has 2.66 square feet of LEED-certified space for each Albertan. Also, Alberta has more than 700 LEED-registered projects.

The University of Calgary’s Child Development Centre was the first certified LEED platinum building in Canada and one of the first such buildings constructed in a cold weather climate. In Edmonton, the Mosaic Centre, a 30,000 square foot office building completed in 2015 is the first net zero energy, LEED platinum, Living Building Challenge certified building in Canada.

Additionally, Alberta boasts a large number of companies producing innovative green building products that offer valuable solutions

to customers. Some of these products include:

• Specialized building materials made from recycled tires;

• Advanced HVAC technologies;• State-of-the-art windows;• Unique air barrier systems;• Specialized LED lighting;• Moveable and curtain wall systems;• Innovative structure solutions, such as

insulated concrete forms; • Fiberglass rebar; and • Erosion control mulches.

Alberta is active in the development of net-zero energy homes. Facilitated by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s EQulibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative, Alberta companies have built four of Canada’s first 15 EQuilibrium class net-zero energy homes. Since the completion of these projects, momentum for net-zero energy homes in Alberta has increased. Motivated by a sense of responsibility to lead industry and a desire for a market advantage, a group of Alberta builders has a vision for all new home construction to meet a net-zero energy standard by 2030.

Right now, Alberta has close to 32 net-zero energy homes, and there are more under construction, including plans to build Alberta’s first net-zero housing community in Cranston, Calgary. Net-zero energy homes are presently classified at an Energuide rating of 100, but many home buildings are

Alberta Building Products and Technologies Profile

meeting the demand for energy efficiency by building homes with an Energuide rating of 86 or higher.

The capacity of solar-electric systems in Alberta has been growing at 102 per cent per year since the start of Alberta’s innovative micro-generation regulation in 2009. The energy from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on houses reached retail price parity with the electricity grid in 2013 -- all without government subsidies. Alberta now has 8.9 MW of solar PV capacity and 1,285 grid-connected solar PV systems. The biggest operational solar PV system in Alberta now is one megawatt (MW).

The Government of Alberta is taking a lead role in promoting energy efficiency, resource conservation and environmental measures through the growth of Alberta‘s green building technologies and products industry. The government’s strategy on green building technologies and products is being developed with the hope that, one day, many of these green technologies and products will be mandatory in the construction of new buildings. Part of this strategy is driving the industry towards improving productivity and competitiveness using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology. Increasing the awareness and implementation of BIM technology in sustainable building design is a key strategic initiative intended to elevate the global competitiveness of Alberta’s building

construction industry. Alberta has been successful in collaborative and trust-based BIM models.

With the introduction of the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan in November 2015, there are four key areas that government is moving forward on:

• Phasing out coal-generated electricity and developing more renewable energy;

• Implementing a new carbon price on greenhouse gas pollution;

• Legislating an oilsands emission limit; and

• Employing a new methane emission reduction plan.

Details of the final strategy are being developed, but indicate energy efficiency programs may be rolled out in 2016 to help energy users adopt energy-efficient, cost-effective measures. Carbon price rebates and green infrastructure investment are also anticipated. The plan goes beyond home and workplace energy efficiency, acknowledging the importance of the design of cities and neighbourhoods.

Alberta’s business climate supports investment, encourages diversity and allows businesses to compete successfully around the world. A thriving green building industry continues to emerge in Alberta to meet the growing demand for green products and technologies.

Century Aluminum Products manufactures and distributes Powder Coated “Component Style” aluminum deck railing. Designed for the Do-It-Yourself and Pro-Contractor markets.

Century Railings are as easy to assemble as Lego®. Our railings are available in both glass and picket style. Pre-Packaged bar coded and code compliant. Century installs up to 50% faster than other railing systems with substantially less parts.

The true advantage to powder coating is that is a VOC free finish (Volatile Organic Compound) and uses no heavy metals. Special venting or filters are not required, plus over sprayed or unused powders can be recovered and recycled.

As the demand for maintenance free and environmentally friendly products grows, powder coated aluminum railings have become the alternative choice when designing sundecks and patios. The elimination of potentially harmful cleansers and stains is another reason why powder coating has become so popular.

The use of aluminum in the Century railings eliminates the use of wood, therefore helping in maintaining our forests. Our manufacturing plant is a state of the art high-tech facility that uses environmentally friendly procedures throughout the design and manufacturing process.

We are seeking partnerships throughout North America with National or Regional one and two step building material distributors. Exclusive opportunities to distribute and grow the Century brand. Century also offers protected territories to all our new partners.

City of Calgary

Calgary is the third largest city in Canada and home to 1.2 million people. imagineCalgary is Calgary’s 100-year vision and long range sustainability plan with targets to help Calgary develop more sustainably. Some key initiatives that demonstrate Calgary’s progress, specifically relevant to the green building industry, are listed below:

• Our Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP) will shape how Calgary grows and develops over the next 30 – 60 years. It minimizes urban sprawl and encourages denser, mixed-use development.

• The Green Development Guidelines help consultants, building owners and developers align with the MDP and the CTP, which includes efforts to reduce GHG emissions.

• The Sustainable Development Inventory is a resource for builders and developers and, for commercial building permits, is required as part of the building permit application. This form helps to quantify and record energy efficiency systems in commercial buildings.

• The City of Calgary has streamlined the application process for solar PV systems on homes and businesses, and provides technical and permitting information on renewable and alternative energy on our website.

• In 2003, Calgary was the first Canadian municipality to adopt a Sustainable Building Policy. The policy requires all new municipal facilities larger than 500 square meter to meet or exceed LEED Gold.

• The City of Calgary’s Community Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan that provides direction on reducing city-wide GHG emissions. The Plan also sets ambitious city-wide GHG reduction targets: 20 per cent reduction by 2020 and 80 per cent reduction by 2050 below 2005 levels.

The City of Calgary welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with any EcoBuild companies or attendees to achieve the City of Calgary’s green building objectives.

City of Edmonton

Edmonton City Council recently endorsed Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition Strategy which aims to make Edmonton an energy sustainable city by 2035.

This includes a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency improvements in all sectors, ensuring Edmonton’s energy systems are resilient to disturbances from climate change, and positioning Edmonton to participate in what is possibly one of the greatest economic opportunities in our time.

The Strategy’s Eight-Year Action Plan outlines more than 150 tactics that will be undertaken to improve the efficiency of our urban form, transportation, building and industrial sectors, municipal water, wastewater and waste management, and to lead by example in improving energy efficiency and resilience within city operations. Tactics related to the building sector include, but are not limited to:

• A demonstration program showcasing products, services and behaviors that achieve energy efficiency in buildings;

• Energy labeling pilot program for new and existing homes;

• An energy reporting/disclosure program for large institutional/commercial/industrial (ICI) buildings; and

• A green renovation program for residential and ICI buildings.

Timing could not be more perfect with the recent Alberta Climate Change Leadership report which recommends the province and municipalities work together in transitioning all of Alberta toward a “carbon competitive”, economic and environmentally resilient future.

Edmonton’s Energy Transition Targets:

• Climate Change Mitigation: Reduce community-based greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent by 2035 (compared to 2005 levels);

• Energy Efficiency: Reduce energy consumption by 25 per cent per person by 2035 (compared to 2009 levels); and

• Energy Resilience: Generate 10 per cent of Edmonton’s electricity locally by 2035.

Air Barriers, Climate Control, Energy Management

One of the greatest sources of energy loss in any building is through an open doorway. For years facilities having been losing mass amounts of energy and occupants had to suffer the discomfort of cold drafts entering in when the doors get opened.

What some people don’t know is that there’s a technology on the market that can create up to a 90 per cent energy efficient seal on open doors by simply re-circulating facility air across the doorway. “Air Barriers” manufactured and designed by Enershield, an Edmonton, Alberta based company, have been saving facilities energy and money as well as enhancing employee/client comfort for the past 13-years.

Enershield manufactures Air Barriers for any size opening. It also can be utilized to keep bugs, dust, warm summer air and, in cold storage facilities, to keep warm air from entering the coolers/freezers.

As fuel costs continue to rise to record levels, pressure is mounting for companies to be more energy efficient. Air Barriers are not only an energy saving solution; they help maintain a more comfortable indoor climate and help to reduce wear and tear on heating/cooling systems and doors.

If an open door is a concern for your facility due to the effects of: energy costs, employee/client discomfort, insects, temperature differential or dust and fumes, contact Enershield Industries. They will assess your application and select the right Air Barrier to address your needs.

FAST™ (FERO Shelf Angle Support Technology)

Fire-Release Connectors

Masonry connectors and ties

FERO Corporation is a leading manufacturer of shelf angle support systems, firerelease roof and floor joist connectors, and engineered masonry connectors.

Our veneer vertical support technology (FAST™ - FERO Angle Support Technology) meets or exceeds all applicable building codes and ASHRAE requirements. FERO FAST™ brackets not only offer faster and easier installation of shelf angles, they also enable continuous insulation behind the shelf angle maximizing the energy efficiency of buildings.

FERO’s patented Break-Away Fire-Release connectors are used for connecting horizontal structural components (such as open web steel joists of floor and roof systems) to firewalls through the use of a fusible member, which allows for complete disengagement and collapse of the structural component from the wall during a fire.

Unlike other connectors currently on the market, FERO’s Break-Away Fire-Release connector uses a simple design that relies on only one part of the connector failing during the fire, allowing for disengagement of the structural component to occur only when required to prevent damage to the firewall, and not earlier.

The Beaumont Shake is the latest edition to our product line. Similar to the Harvest shake in thickness and design, it has a 9” exposure as opposed to the Harvest Shake’s 7 5/8” exposure. Beaumont Shake, Harvest Shake and Heritage Slate are thinner, lighter and less expensive versions of EuroSlate® and EuroShake®, designed to bridge the price gap between asphalt shingles and other pricier premium roofing materials like cedar, slate, metal and other plastic/composite synthetics.

All products offer the highest hail rating attainable - UL2218 Class 4 Listed AND now feature a 2-inch HAIL WARRANTY. All products contain approximately 95 per cent recycled content, the bulk of which is recycled tire rubber, and are covered by a limited, transferable lifetime warranty.

Hi-Velocity Systems by Energy Saving Products Ltd.

Voted “Air Conditioning Product of the Year 2015” at the UK RAC Cooling Industry Awards.

The draft-free, discrete and energy efficient Hi-Velocity air distribution system creates the perfect indoor environment. It delivers any combination of heating, air conditioning, ventilation and air purification throughout any building. It integrates seamlessly into commercial, residential, industrial and retail buildings, whether new build or retrofit, listed or unusual.

Sitting in the draft and feeling uncomfortably hot or cold can ruin a meal, spoil a conference, workout or shopping experience, and affect performance at work. The Hi-Velocity system solves the problem of drafts and provides enjoyable, comfortable and even temperatures for everyone.

Hi-Velocity is a high pressure air distribution system, which works on the principle of pressure rather than velocity. It moves air to where it is needed via a series of unique, small diameter (mini) ducts. The system uses laws of physics, de-stratification and a unique air movement pattern to provide superior indoor air quality whilst increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint.

The system maximizes space as the air handler can be hidden in a loft, cellar and cupboards or above ceilings. The huge variety of unobtrusive outlet vent plates ensures it blends perfectly into any interior design.

The optional add-on powerful HEPS purifier cleans the air and can eliminate allergy symptoms and reduce the spread of infectious disease.

Hi-Velocity has been easily installed in offices, luxury homes, shopping centres, hotels and restaurants, schools, factories and laboratories, hospitals, doctor’s surgeries and care homes, theme parks, leisure centres and libraries.

Hi-Velocity is compatible with all new and existing sustainable heating and cooling sources, including air to water heat pumps, air to refrigerant heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, high efficiency boilers, solar panels and chilled water systems.

Since 1984, Hoyme Manufacturing has been developing and manufacturing innovative, energy-saving air control products suitable for both residential and commercial use.

Beginning with the development of the CSA certified Hoyme Combustion Air Damper, we have continued to evolve and expand our line of products geared to meet the needs of the HVAC industry. The most popular has been our Fresh Air Dampers, also CSA certified, and available in both round and rectangular models with diameters ranging from 3-inch to 30-inch. We also manufacture Motorized Hoods, Backdraft Dampers, Backdraft Hoods and Fireplace Chimney Powercaps. Another innovative product, our Interface Relay Adaptor, serves to successfully bridge the HVAC and electrical trades. They handle 24Vac, 120Vac, and Millivolt to 100Vdc, and some models include programmable timers. One of HMI’s more recent developments is the Hoyme Air Exchanger. Using the existing furnace fan to move air, it allows high efficiency air exchange without the additional operating expenses and maintenance required with standard heat recovery ventilators.

HMI enjoys a growing reputation as a respected leader in the industry. We take pride in the quality of the products we manufacture, and satisfaction in knowing that they pay for themselves over time through reduced energy consumption.

Edmonton-based Lenmak Exterior Innovations is an architectural metal panel manufacturer that has earned its success not only by building a superior product, but also through a commitment to using technology to automate operations.

Lenmak began in 1996 with husband and wife team Ray and Lori Turner providing 100 per cent of the manpower. Today, the business has grown to a 40-person company supplying a variety of innovative products to a large and growing base of building trade customers.

The company uses many of the technologies employed by high-tech manufacturers: robotics, CNC machines, gantry systems, CAD software, and a robust ERP platform for business management. Each tool testifies to Lenmak’s commitment to investing in automation. But it’s not only the individual technologies, but the integration between each of these separate tools that provides Lenmak with a critical competitive advantage in the form of their streamlined order fulfillment process.

One of Lenmak’s primary products is the EnvaTherm® back pan line. EnvaTherm® uses metal components which contain pre- and post-consumer recycled material. The foam insulation is 100 per cent water-blown, uses no synthetic blowing agents or ozone-depleting substances and is totally PBDE-free. It is a safe and totally stable substance after curing and component utilization is nearly 100 per cent with no waste generated on site. EnvaTherm® panels will not support growth of mold, which helps to ensure air quality within the curtain-wall assembly and therefore within the building Lenmak Exterior Innovations, flawless from fabrication to finish.

Magnaboard is an exciting new product in the moulding category that we believe will revolutionize the way people approach baseboards and trim.

Magnaboard is an innovative pre-finished Cellular Composite PVC or CPVC board with a powerful Magnetic fastening system that is both removable and easy to install. Magnaboard rivals other current pre finished Mouldings such as Finished Elegance with many added benefits that drive in store sales. Magnaboard’s CPVC boards are non-molding, water resistant, mildew proof, light, non-toxic, non-swelling, strong, durable, paintable and best of all Removable!

Installation: Since Magnaboard is a surface mount system rather than a nail-through system, the board is never physically damaged, which then requires endless hours of repair through, mudding, sanding, taping and repainting. Magnaboard eliminates this problem by utilizing a rear mount magnetic MagnaRail TM system.

Using powerful rare earth magnets in the Polystyrene rail, that is held to the wall with a self leveling VHB foam adhesive, the rail is attracted to the 20-gauge steel that is processed into the back of every Magnaboard at a pull strength of 42lbs per magnet. This gives the boards a near unbreakable bond to the wall and still allows for removal using a simple tool.

Why Removable? Magnaboard was conceived with removability at the core of its design. This simple asset allows the DIY’er or contractor to REPAINT without the need to CUT-IN. Simply by removing the boards you can roll paint right to our MagnaRail and then snap the baseboards back into place.

Commercial Use: Magnaboard also opens up a whole new category in commercial sales because of the surface mounting technology. Prior to Magnaboard the only options in commercial install was carpet or rubber base because pin nailing is not an option in cinder block or aluminum type construction.

MSL

Roofing, Soundproofing, Insulation

MSL is a manufacturing company specialized in the production of construction products designed for commercial roofing, soundproofing and thermal insulation. MSL’s mission is to manufacture a wide range of innovative and environmentally friendly products while ensuring a level of service and efficiency which meets the expectations of our clients and distributors.

MSL has two manufacturing facilities (MSL and Convermat) in Louiseville, Quebec, as well as sales offices in Montreal and Calgary. The MSL factory is certified ISO 9001, with a fully automated production process which operates with a completely closed loop water system (zero effluent) resulting in an efficient and environmentally friendly mill. The panels produced by MSL are made from 100% recycled wood and are 100% recyclable as well. The Convermat Division is equipped with state of the art technology for laminating and production of composite panels.

SONOclimat eco4® is a new ultra-ecofriendly rigid insulation panel, providing a thermal resistance of R4 and meeting the highest standards possible for sustainable development. In additional to being 100% recyclable, the panel has very high water vapour permeability at 25.9 perms, superior structural and bracing characteristics (measured in accordance with ASTM E72-13) and offers a superior level of soundproofing to other insulation panels. It can be used on exterior or interior walls, or both for increased insulation. SONOclimat eco4® panels provide

an R4 thermal barrier that is efficient and continuous, resulting in decreased energy consumption. This panel is great for your LEED construction projects, passive houses and any project requiring sustainable building materials. It was designed and is entirely manufactured by MSL in Canada

Using only recycled wood to make the SONOclimat eco4® panel helps preserve trees and reduces waste. One thousand kg of recycled wood is the equivalent of 12 to 17 trees. MSL recycles about 30,000 tons of wood per year, equivalent to nearly 85 million sq. ft. of panels for the construction industry and thereby saving more than 300,000 trees each year. For the environment this translates into saving trees, energy, water, landfill space and wildlife.

Hempcrete blocks For Superior Wall Systems

Hemp is a rapid growth, CO2 sequestering, beneficial rotation crop grown in western Canada. The hemp stalks can grow between 3 and 9 feet in height and are subsequently processed to remove and utilize the organic seed and outer stalk fibre leaving the core of the stalk, a valuable construction material, called shive (or hurd).

Carbon negative hempcrete construction blocks are created when shive is mixed with a mineral cement binder. When these blocks are laid up around a traditional wood frame construction, they become an ideal wall system for passive homes. They breathe, which allows them to regulate indoor humidity, they have very high thermal and acoustic insulating performance, they resist pests, fungal growth and fire and are low cost per square-foot relative to other passive wall systems.

Rock and Root Eco is currently designing an automated line of equipment for fabricating hempcrete blocks and panels to complement its proprietary hemp binder mixes. We are seeking researchers who would like to incorporate hempcrete blocks or panels in test structures.

Hempcrete blocks allow for easy to build, economical, environmentally sound, and healthy buildings.

Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF) has established a Strategic Research Chair in Bio & Industrial Materials at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) to support materials research and development for Canada’s sustainable resource sectors (forestry & agriculture). Areas of focus include new sustainable building materials, bio-fiber composites and products (insulation, mats), bio-based polymers, manufacturing processes, and life-cycle assessment. This collaborative initiative links industry, academia and government research organizations in key areas of “Green” materials and sustainable design. The research program works with companies to develop or assess new technologies, and to provide applied and pre-commercial research activities.

As a partner, AITF provides innovation, research and commercialization services delivering economic and social benefits to Alberta in the areas of agriculture, forestry, oil and gas, environment, health and pipelines. AITF works collaboratively, with a wide range of partners in Alberta, Canada and internationally, to create the strong science, technology and entrepreneurial culture Alberta needs to grow new and existing businesses and industries.

AITF and the University of Alberta presently work with a number of European Union-based companies, and are looking to partner with organizations in the same interests areas whereby synergies could be accomplished.
