Part B: Follow-up from the Previous Evaluation

Requirement Please Check

One Comment

The following requirement(s) was/were identified in the previous evaluation report:

1. Teacher certification – Alberta

Education requires that all teachers

who are teaching the Alberta

program of studies hold

certification with the Province of

Alberta.

Addressed

Partially

addressed

Not

addressed

The school is required to continue hiring

certificated teachers. Maplewood International

School is striving to complete their staffing

complement to ensure all teachers are certificated

at the beginning of the school year.

2. Provincial Approach to Student

Information (PASI) updates – As

PASI is a strategic, multi-year

initiative aimed at ensuring the

business processes and

technologies used to collect student

information to enhance the delivery

of education by providing the

information immediately it is

required that all student

information must be submitted in

PASI by September 30th each year.

Addressed

Partially

addressed

Not

addressed

Submissions by the school were made by September

30th.

3. Preparation and planning for

Grade 10 –With the program

expanding to grade 10 in

2016/2017, the school is required to

continue with the delivery of the

program of studies in its three

primary elements: program

delivery, adequate and aligned

resources and student assessment

linked to achieving curriculum

objectives.

Addressed

Partially

addressed

Not

addressed

The school has successfully expanded the Alberta

program and uses adequately aligned resources and

student assessments that are linked to curriculum

objectives. Two Coordinators, with extensive

Alberta Education background, have been hired to

ensure delivery of the Alberta Program from

Kindergarten to Grade 4 and from grades 5 to 10.

December/2016 Page 7

Recommendation Response

The following recommendation(s) was/were identified in the previous evaluation report:

1. Resources for the Grade 10

program – With the program

expansion to Grade 10 it is

recommended the school continue

to examine the need for resources

that support the Alberta program.

Additional resources should be

considered in the following areas:

a) Textbooks – student textbooks

as well as teacher resources to

accompany the student texts for

each of the programs of study.

b) Human resources – although

the school employs a wide

variety of staff in various

capacities, students would

benefit from additional staffing

to increase learning

opportunities. Some

suggestions are as follows:

o Academic

advisor/counsellor – to

assist with post-secondary

planning and to ensure that

students are placed in

appropriate programs.

o Education assistants to

support English as a

second language (ESL)

programming – some

additional staffing may be

required to boost the level of

language proficiency

amongst students.

Procuring resources for Grade 10 has been addressed as print,

electronic and teacher resources to accompany the student texts for

each of the programs of study that have been provided.

The area of Human resources has also been addressed as – the

school employs a wide variety of staff in various capacities.

Although the school is doing an admirable job in providing ESL

programming and supports in the school, it is encouraged to

continue accessing education assistants to support English as a

second language (ESL) programming such as professional

development and hiring some additional staff to address the level of

language proficiency amongst students.

Part D: Satisfaction Survey Summary

Survey Methodology

The satisfaction surveys were completed by 29 parents, 38 teachers and 226 eligible students. Students

younger than Grade 4 were not surveyed as they were deemed too young. These surveys were completed online

using the Novi Survey by NoviSystem, Boston, USA.

To assist with the analysis of the survey, the satisfied responses (e.g., Very Satisfied (VS), Satisfied (S),

Strongly Agree (SA) and Agree (A)) were added and reported as a top satisfied percentage. The Dissatisfied

(D), Very Dissatisfied (VD), Disagree (D), Strongly Disagree (SD) and I don’t know (DK) responses were

reported separately in percentage1. Then the percentages were evaluated using the four-point rating scale

below. The full analysis and the open-ended comments from the respondents can be found in Appendix B.

Summarized Survey Results

Satisfaction surveys provide an important lens through which to analyze the success of the school and can

provide additional data to assist the school in planning for the future. Based on the survey data and the

comments from various stakeholder groups, a number of themes emerge:

1. Quality of teaching – students, parents and teachers recognized that the quality of teaching at Maplewood

International School is one of its greatest strengths. Parents describe teachers as “friendly and amazing”

and one student said that “teachers provide enough help for students to achieve” their goals. The staff

agrees that the teachers are one of the school’s assets. One teacher stated “the teachers here are very

strong and they have good rapport with students” and another said that “the quality of teaching staff is

exceptional.”

2. Positive learning environment – there is also a strong belief that Maplewood has created an excellent

learning environment that includes good classroom learning spaces and additional facilities such as the

gymnasium and swimming pool. One of the most common comments from students was about the

availability of chrome books and technology. Maplewood’s learning environment is described by one

student as being a “respectful and comfortable environment” and another described it as “amazing.”

3. Variety of activities that enrich student learning – both students and parents commented on the variety of

activities that take place to enhance student learning. As one student said, the best thing about the school

1 All percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number based on computer-generated analysis. For single response items, percentages may not total to

are “the activities, clubs, opportunities and contests” and another said that “My most favorite part about

this school is the fine arts. I had so many lovely opportunities for improving my acting (drama) and music.

Even drawing!”

4. Quality of education – Based on both the comments and the survey data there is a sense that the quality of

education students are receiving at Maplewood is excellent. One student stated that “we learn a lot and

know new things” and another said “the lessons we learn are educational and fun to learn.”

5. Better communication - Based on the survey results stakeholders expressed a desire for more

communication. One parent said that “communication with teachers” would make the school better. A

student respondent stated that making the school better requires “better communication. Inform the staff

ahead of time what is going on in the school.” Teachers also believe that more communication would make

Maplewood more effective. One teacher said “we really need more communication between administration

and teachers –this would make an incredible difference.”

Part E: Conclusion

The following Commendation(s) were identified in the evaluation:

1. Distributed leadership – Maplewood International School is to be commended on their distributed

leadership model. It is apparent that the school places great emphasis on teachers, support staff and

students as leaders. These efforts have resulted in a safe, supportive and engaging school. The school

leaders, have hired two well-qualified and experienced Alberta certificated teachers to serve as

Coordinators. The school leaders are striving to build broad leadership engagement by setting clear

parameters, engaging stakeholders to work together towards a shared purpose, striving to ensure all

participants share responsibility and accountability and finally, teaching and valuing strengths in all

participants resulting in a culture of shared leadership.

2. Improvement and sustained growth - the school continues to demonstrate continuous improvement and

sustained growth. Maplewood International exemplifies “a school that is dedicated to fostering passion for

learning and to provide rich and relevant learning opportunities” that align with Alberta Education. There

are definite enhancements in the development of the school facility including technology enhancements,

development of a distributed leadership model and improvements in the area of educational pedagogy. The

school is committed to sharing a vision of quality learning for all students through scaffolded, assessment-

rich, differentiated instruction that is supported by quality teaching and teacher development. The

leadership team has high expectations for the school, the staff and the students and provides

communication and feedback regarding indicators of success and expectations in regards to teaching and

instructional practices.

3. Building leadership capacity – The Administrative Team at Maplewood strives to broaden the capacity of

its leadership team as it understands what it takes to lead an international school. The school has created a

number of leadership roles to broaden the schools’ leadership capacity by engaging participants to work

collaboratively and providing instructional leadership to ensure that the Alberta curriculum is delivered in

its entirety and being implemented as intended. The complimentary skill set of Maplewood’s leadership

team provides a solid foundation with respect to the expectations of Alberta Education. In broadening its

leadership capacity, Maplewood is able to provide the necessary leadership, coaching, supports and

targeted professional development in order to improve instruction.

Maplewood International understands that the quality of their education system cannot exceed the quality

of its teachers and importance of developing these people into effective instructors and provides the

necessary leadership, coaching, supports and targeted professional development in order to improve

instruction.

4. School’s Vision - Maplewood has developed a clear vision to ensure students are prepared as 21st century

learners and have the skill sets empowering them to assume leadership roles in the future. The

administration at Maplewood embodies visionary leadership as they recognize the need to embrace change

and continually implement 21st century skills that develop core competencies such as collaboration, digital

literacy, critical thinking and problem solving to assist students to thrive in the 21st century.

December/2016 Page 29

5. Collaborative Culture – Maplewood is to be commended on its collaborative culture. A school walkabout,

classroom observations, professional dialogue with the administration and staff, and student achievement

all demonstrate that the school works collaboratively. The strong work ethic of the staff, the rapport

between the staff and students, the continued gains in academic performance, the developed expertise

among teachers, the resiliency of the staff and the leadership efforts of the administration and board are all

contributing factors that are promoted through the school community and community at large. The

admirable efforts of building community spirit this year has resulted in a positive environment for

stakeholders.

The following Requirement(s) were identified in the evaluation:

1. Staffing Alberta Certificated Teachers – Alberta Education requires that Alberta certificated teachers are

in place to teach all Alberta programs of study. While Maplewood is well aware of this requirement, there

are currently teachers who have not completed the certification process. As a result, a certificated teacher

must supervise teachers who are not Alberta certificated.

It is recommended that the HR manager and/or principal develop a strategy ensuring that the teacher

certification process is complete prior to the commencement of the school year or be encouraged to

acquire the necessary documents to submit prior to leaving home (i.e. criminal records and vulnerable

persons safety checks, transcripts, statements of professional standing, etc.).

2. High School Science lab equipment - Alberta high school science courses are activity and laboratory

oriented. Students require well-equipped laboratories to perform learning activities. It is required that the

school's laboratories be equipped at a level that can deliver the Alberta high school science curriculum.

3. High School Programming/Resources – With the program expanding to Grade 11 in 2017/2018, the

school is required to continue with the delivery of the program of studies in its three primary elements:

program delivery, adequate and aligned resources and student assessment linked to achieving curriculum

outcomes. The school is required to continue procuring resources that support the Alberta program.

December/2016 Page 30

The following Recommendation(s) were offered at the evaluation:

1. English as a Second Language (ESL) - The school currently offers support for students who have English

as a second (or third) language. This is important in that the school operates in the English medium with

all Alberta curriculum subjects being delivered in English, with the exception of Arabic Language. Alberta

Education has a framework of standards and benchmarks for measuring student needs and progress in

learning English. It is recommended that the school adopt these benchmarks and associated assessments

that align with Alberta Education’s ESL standards.

2. Acquiring a PASI Compliant Student Record/Information System - The school currently has all eligible

students registered on PASI. This has been done manually as the ORISON student record system used by

the school is not PASI compliant. The school may want to consider a transition to a student record system

that is PASI compliant. This will allow single record entry and maintenance rather than the current 3

record systems - ORISON (school), eSIS (ADEC), PASI (Alberta).

3. Delivery of CTS course offerings - The school currently offers 7 modules of CTS credit. As the high school

grows it will be necessary to increase this number significantly. It is recommended that the school consider

creating specialized space and equipment for the delivery of CTS modules.

4. Academic Counselling – As Career and Technology Studies (CTS) programming is developed at the high

school, students are introduced to a variety of options which will introduce career pathways for them. The

implications of this are at the post-secondary level where students may want to explore career pathways

beyond the traditional university setting. Maplewood is encouraged to hire an Academic

advisor/counsellor to assist students with post-secondary planning to ensure that students are placed in

appropriate programs and provide them with post-secondary career planning. This may assist students and

parents in understanding other career possibilities that may lead them to colleges and technical institutes

that may suit some students’ needs.

5. Facility - The school is encouraged to enhance students’ play space. The school currently has a large

number of students playing various games and activities in a common space. It is recommended that the

administration explore ways of separating play areas into places designated for certain activities or groups

of students. Additional fencing and shading would allow greater use of the space currently available.

6. Inclusive Education – Maplewood is to be commended for striving to provide inclusive learning

opportunities for students. The school leaders are actively engaged in creating and supporting structures

and processes to effectively meet the diverse learning needs of students. This work aligns with Alberta

Education’s newly developed Inclusive Education Policy that is included within the 2015-16 Guide to

Education: ECS to Grade 12. The instructional leaders are encouraged to continue to ensure a shared

responsibility and accountability for educational outcomes and are encouraged to share with teachers,

Alberta Education’s Libraries/Learning Supports that will assist instructional teams in the implementation

of instructional approaches.

December/2016 Page 31

Preliminary Accreditation Recommendation:

It is recommended that Maplewood International School be granted an accreditation agreement for

Kindergarten to Grade 12 for 2017/2018 contingent upon meeting the requirements outlined in this report.

Appendix A: Evaluation Model

I. Definition

An evaluation is a systematic and objective assessment of an ongoing or completed project,

program or policy, its design, implementation, and results. Evaluation is retrospective in

that emphasis is placed on what has happened, or is being observed, not on what is likely to

happen. An evaluation must provide information that is credible and useful, enabling the

incorporation of lessons learned into the decision-making process. Evaluations, by their

very nature are never neutral as judgments about worth; utility, and/or goodness are made

based on the evidence obtained during the evaluation.

II. Purpose

The contractual agreements for Alberta pre-accreditation and accreditation of international

schools require the Alberta Minister of Education to conduct a minimum of one on-site

evaluation of an international school prior to awarding pre-accreditation, and a minimum of

another prior to awarding accreditation. Then, each accredited international school must be

evaluated annually and be found compliant to maintain its accreditation with the

Government of Alberta. There are four purposes to an evaluation of an international

school:

1. to provide evidence to the Alberta Minister of Education that the international school is

in compliance with Alberta Education requirements for accreditation;

2. to report to the Minister of Education as to the potential and success of the international

school and to identify areas of strength and areas which require additional attention;

3. to focus the attention of the school on the goals and objectives of the contractual

agreement and the need to establish and confirm measurable outcomes and measures;

and

4. to facilitate continuous improvement in the international school.

III. Elements of an Evaluation

An evaluation must contain the following elements:

a clear statement as to the purpose of the evaluation and the identification of the

recipients of the final report;

a description of the kind of information to be acquired;

an identification of the information sources;

a description of the methods that will be used to gather information (e.g., observations,

photographs, interviews, document reviews, and surveys);

a notification of information collection, timing and frequency;

a plan that outlines how the data will be analyzed;

conclusions supported by data about the worth of the matter being evaluated;

commendations/recommendations, and required changes to ensure compliance; and

an evaluation report.

December/2016 Page 34

IV. Annual Evaluation Report

Upon completion of the on-site evaluation, a report will be provided to the school

owners/operators and school administrator (Alberta school Principal or Alberta program

administrator) in approximately 60-90 days. This report will identify any requirements that

must be addressed. The school will be expected to communicate with Alberta Education, ensuring

that they meet the requirements.

30. What would you do to make the school better?

Nothing

Better communication. Inform the staff ahead of time what is going on in the school.

make more activities that make people comfortable match the student's needs and make them more comfortable

to encourage them to come to school

I would make the school better by adding the co-curricular again if possible and also people who don't know Arabic

but have a Arab passport I would make it possible so that they could also do non-Arab if they don't know.

MORE TEACHING(from the 1 teacher I dont like),FRENCH,ART,CLEANING THE CHANGING ROOMS and CHEW GUM

make teaching fun and make the bathroom clean

I would make sure that the students are kind to new people because some of the students are not kind to me. As a

new student I expected many people to be nice to me but many students still have negative relationships with me.

Expand the swimming pool changing rooms and make break longer.

Add some burnt chicken nuggets in the cafeteria!

Have more music & drama periods, unless there is a good reason for not doing so. Regardless, the school would

stay good anyways.

Give us lockers for our self in the swimming pool toilets

Two thing I would like to do to make the school better is the school to offer after school transportation and add

more shower rooms for girls.

I would want our co-curricular to be in the 10th lesson and not after school and add more bathrooms in the girls

swimming changing room.

put more foot in the cafeteria.

make the break longer

bigger place

Have less homework, and make the cafeteria less expensive.

Add more equipments for science experiments and add more fun languages to learn.

To teach students about respect and more football fields.

more break time

to get golden time and have more food I mean we need McDonald's and fast food they're healthy to the body and

makes you stronger

more fun in lessons

Avoid bullying by really hard way.

December/2016 Page 47

I would add more sports activities and add basketball hoops in the playground instead of having just a soccer field. I

would also expand the school so that when it gets over a thousand students, the school will be able to provide

equal assistance.

i think that they need to add students who have the level to come this school.

To make this school better i would increase the needs of the students such as more facilities for sports.

i would do that what student needs like they want basketball and also another like Cricket and Hockey becuase we

almost always play soccer. They also want Trips to go.

I think my school should add more subjects such as business and economics that we need to get into the

universities or colleges we want.

More subject availability, and counselling for universities and how to build a good profile

One of the thing i would advise this school to make the basketball available for student who needs it . resources

should be mpre better and uselfull. Overall school is Amazingggg!!

Yes I wanted to be school class representative but I was not allected and that was the wrong choice I belive

I would try to get students more involved and encourage them to speak their minds more.

i would add more equipment and facilities to the school (Science, Physical Education, Music Etc.) and add more

elective subjects for us to expand our learning experiences.

more subjects like ict and french

How that there is no bullying more caring and helping each other and there are options of choosing what you want

to join and not only art but Drama, Music and art.

It's already a great school! I can't think of anything that can make it even better!

Not much

better communication between teachers and a bigger playground. All teachers should also be tested for their

teaching abilities.

get better and more professional teachers because from what i see we don have enough teachers teaching the

upper grades for example one teacher could be teaching 3 subjects although he is only proffesioned in teaching

only one

nothing

To keep it going like this

get better food in the cafeteria.

Make the soccer/football pitch bigger

More facilities for other sport ex:track and field course, tennis court, etc.Joining in many kind of competitions, also

joining in volunteering work.

more sports or activities for the students

make the football pitch bigger

i dont know.

That not all of us have to swim

make the school give more importance to the emarati culture

Have more swimming lessons ,PE every day and .

I'd probably raise the spirit of not having bullies, because honestly the school board doesn't really have anything

concerning to prevent bullying, so I'm not sure about that. I'd also try to have more countries included than just

U.A.E and Canada,

To make us wear our own cloths not a spacifc uniform.

i dont know

I think there must be two arabic classes a day also the USS is only one period in the whole week also there only two

is unfair and only respects her daughter.W

i well let the teachers tack us to a trip every day and have fun and play with our friends and hangout with them

making it a better community

I have noticed that Arabic holidays, even the small ones always get a day off but not important Canadian ones. I'm

not saying I want more Holidays but I think maybe we could instead of having a day off for 4 minor Arab holidays, 2

Canada and 2 Arabic

i think that this school is really great and does not need any thing to make it better.

Not to have multiple test at the same week and the same day.

I would like if the school took student suggestions.

December/2016 Page 50

The swimming pool would be completely covered, because right now it isn't. Students passing by to go to the gym

would be able to see other students swimming. And when it's windy or there is a dust storm, it would enter the

pool, infecting it.

Having competitions outside the school, sports day

food quality, better technologies,

make the food less expesensive at the canteen.

a little bigger.

More choices of games in Physical Education.

I think that the food in the cafeteria is not healthy enough for the students they have to improve the quality of the

the cafeteria's food.

It would be better if students treat the other students with respect and they stop bullying people

either because of their culture, colour or country where they're from...especially making fun of the others.

the students sometimes are not friendly and mean

Have more teachers. Have teachers teach french.

restrict mr.jacob to not disrespect and say unprofessional comments to the students

school will be much more talented .

Please try to let grade 7 have art and please bring nicer teachers. And we need a longer first break because really

just 15 minutes we're halfway through our food

Never remove any classes for 2 years. Students won't enjoy it, especially because they slipped out my favorite

class, and it is replaced with Arabic for people who don't know how to speak it (not me).

learn

to restrict mr jacob from disrespect and say unprofessional comments to the students.

have more field trips, books, more recces time

Open-ended questions:

30. What do you like most about this school?

I find that the teachers here are very strong and they have good rapport with students.

The atmosphere between students and staff always seems just right; the right amount of respect but everyone

appears comfortable and the students have a place where they can freely question subjects and make good

progress

The students are willing to listen and learn even with the language barriers encountered.

The co-operation

The staff is hard working, care about children and learning and always try their best. This is a great staff that I

respect and enjoy working with and learning from.

The students and parents are the best.

The cooperation between the teachers is great. Everyone supports one another.

Ever effort is made to provide an encouraging and positive atmosphere in the school.

The quality of teaching staff is exceptional given the small size and start-up nature of the school.

The diverse cultural experiences and respect of the differences. The principal is extremely knowledgeable on

curriculum at all levels.

The teaching and administrative staff are very professional and friendly.

the family spirit atmosphere of staff and managment

No bullying. All teachers want to achieve positive outcomes for the students. Children are given opportunities to

enjoy learning in the lower grades.

Working with international students, using the Alberta Framework.

The teachers work well together With the leadership provided by the Principal and Vice Principal(s) And the

teachers can opportunity to be involved in decisions at our school.

The staff are nice and we have a great relationship.

I like that our teachers are mostly Canadian and are aware of the expectations that Canadian schools have. I like

that teachers are able to work together and form solutions without guidance of our supervisors. I like that it is

sunny here. :)

The Principal is trying to help us implement an Alberta philosophy where all students count. It is very difficult at

times as we are new and it is not a public school but one that is run for profits.

I like the cooperation between the admin and stuff, also I'm feeling relax when I'm dealing with every one.

Communicate and collaborate with others

collegues from PE department :)

I like that the school encourages collaboration between staff members. The administration encourages

collaboration between teachers and allows time for this to occur. I like the digital resources the school has

provided.

The school administration encourages students and teachers to become actively involved in all areas of school life

and are respectful of the opinions of all.

Freedom teachers have to teach the curriculum. General positive atmosphere

31. What would you do to make the school better?

We really need better communication between administration and teachers - this would make an incredible

difference. Simply emailed updates or something like that would make a huge difference.

The school has mainly low achieving students (due to locale it seems) and it means that higher achieving students

may not be sufficiently challenged. As a potential parent of a student this concerns me.

The school is only in its third year so it is doing great. I would like to see us add more courses like home ec and shop

but space is limited so we live with what we have.

too much help to my students

Discipline MUST be handled much more firmly. ALL SEN students MUST be supported. Resources!! Social Worker

needs to interact with children, be a presence. School needs resources, teachers are spending A LOT of money for b

Continue to strive to improve and get better in terms of curriculum delivery and policy.

Having access to more resources would be helpful.

Reduce the amount of students in some of the classes.

The school needs to manage student admissions more effectively.

School policies are too lose and simply left up to teachers discretion. Rules need to be made by admin and properly

communicated to the teachers with expectations that these rules be upheld. Admin/teacher communication also

very poor.

Work on more multi grade partnerships giving the older students an opportunity to mentor the younger students.

Work on developing the special education support staff and educating all staff on inclusive education

help in giving good quality teaching and service to the students in a proffesional manners!

More cleaning staff. More trained house keepers.IE toilets to stay up to date and clean. Check closely tiles and

other items for safety of students and staff. Thanks

Be more organized by making sure that staff and students are informed clearly of events beforehand. Make sure

events cater to multiple needs. Make meetings less complicated, let staff know what is expected and when, in a

positive manner.

Provide more organization. Give teachers time and support to work collaboratively. Work on clear expectations for

all staff and students. Give timely information.

the teachers need opportunities for professional development.

Better communication from management about important events.

Clear and concise expectations of student behavior. Less transitions for grades 4-6, teachers in this category should

be homeroom based teachers. The teacher should be moving and not the

students (this would clear up most behavior issues).

Communication needs to be cleaned up. Could we have one email a day outlining clearly what is to occur?

more sport facilities

Better communication from administration would greatly benefit the school. Making decisions in advance and

allowing all staff to be a part of school-wide decisions would allow teachers to feel more involved in the directions

and events of the school.

The administration takes on board all suggestions for the betterment of the school and ensure a safe secure

environment for the students.

Make a planner/diary for each student that teachers can write notes to parents, stick important letters, write

homework in etc. Every student and teacher wears an ID card to identify themselves at all times on campus.
