◆ COVER STORY

KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

We all need a little Christmas

and the young dancers from Pat Cummings School of Dance are here to bring a little holiday cheer to Port Alberni with a show of the same name.

Everyone from hip-hop to ballet dancers will be taking part in the dance school’s “We Need a Little Christmas” concert this Friday, Dec. 12.

A group of nine-year-old ballet dancers have been practicing a dance called “My Favourite Things.” Complete with presents and twirling in party dresses, the girls are excited to show off their skills.

It’s been years since the Pat Cummings School of Dance put

on a Christmas show and for the seven girls in the group, this will be their very first one with the school.

The girls come in for one hour a week and they have to learn grade work for their ballet exams, enter into competitions as well as learn the dance for the Christmas show.

“They’ve had to think and learn quickly and they’ve done very well; I’m very pleased with them,” said Alison Cowan, the school’s artistic director. “They’re a really good class.”

While the ballet dancers practice upstairs, another class is practicing for the Christmas show in a room below.

The five- to eight-year-olds in the school’s Move and Groove introductory

hip-hop class are also performing at the Christmas show.

“They’re the most recreational dancers that we have in the show, this is just an open class like something you would see at the rec centre,” said instructor Jennifer Walsh.

The dancers, most

of whom are brand new to dancing, have been preparing for the show for six weeks.

After the dancing’s done at the end of the show, performers will sing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to close out the night.

The Pat Cummings School of Dance’s “We Need a Little Christmas” is happening on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the ADSS theatre. Tickets are $10 and can be picked up at Gayle’s Fashions, the Funk Trunk or at the studio at 5119 Athol St. from 3-6 p.m. For more information call 250-724-2580.

Celebrate winter with Elite Dance

Elite Dance

Academy will have their holiday show, Winter Celebration, on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at their studio at 5100 Tebo Ave.

For more information call 778-421-5559.

RAW talk about photos

Rain, rain, and more rain, it makes me

wonder why the valley doesn’t just fill up with rain and then we could sail our house down the water-logged streets a la Monty Python.

We did have a few days that were sunny enough to take out the Vespa and cruise around taking photographs. My travels took me down to Harbour Quay, to Canal Beach, Clutesi Haven Marina and up Beaver Creek Road to Josephine.

While travelling on Beaver Creek Road at the spot where the trees overhang the road, I hit black ice. Black ice is bad enough with a four-wheel vehicle but with

a two-wheel vehicle it is suicide. I could feel the tires slipping and trying to go sideways so what did I do….absolutely nothing. I did not touch the gas or the brakes and did not try to turn the Vespa. As a result I am here today tapping out this article.

I had my trusty Nikon with me equipped with the incredible 10~20mm wide angle lens— this is the lens that when I take a photograph I have to step backwards otherwise my toes would be in every photo. The Clutesi Marina

photographs were shot with the 10~20 mm lens set at 13mm, the ISO was 400, the aperture was f14, the speed was 1/200 of a second, and I shot in RAW format.

RAW images are 12 bit with 4,096 shades of red, green, and blue. Raw images are the closest to film that one can get from a camera (digital positives). RAW images are non compressed (non-lossy) and not processed in the camera.

My camera gives me a 21 MB file for a raw image (to compare, JPEG images are eight bit with 256 shades of red, green, and blue). JPEG images are processed in the camera and are a lossy format, in other words the image is compressed and some information is discarded (colour).

Columnist Norman Silverstone escapes an encounter with black ice on Josephine Street with aplomb.

I spy with my little eye, a plethora of people

I just spent seven relaxing days in the warm Hawaiian

sunshine with three girlfriends. My week was full of book reading, sunbathing, ocean floating, island exploring and cocktail drinking. It also included tons of walking, a wee bit of shopping and a whole lot of people watching.

While it’s entertaining almost anywhere, people-watching seems more exciting on the active streets of a bustling area where human beings command attention for the way they look or the things they do. And in a busy spot like Waikiki, with tourists from all over the world and several conventions in high gear, we had a lot to look at.

We saw at least a dozen brides, tons of sailors in uniform, body building competitors, cross dressers, street performers, tourists wearing surgical masks and countless folks carrying around extendable handheld phone sticks to take better selfies.

People-watching on the beach was even more interesting with the vast array of bodies, tattoos and bathing suits to discreetly observe behind our dark sunglasses.

But was anyone ever watching us?

Well, I know for sure that some of them were on our last full day when we ventured up island to Sandy Beach Park, a popular spot for experienced surfers who know how to handle the enormous waves and dangerous shore break.

After several hours

of lying on the beach watching the talented locals surf and the frolicking tourists get tossed around by the sea, I went to the restroom. When I returned to the spot where one of my girlfriends and I had been basking in the sun she was still lying on her back sleeping. I was just about to settle down beside her when I saw the biggest wave I’d ever

seen in my life coming straight for us.

“Holy crap!” I shrieked—although I’m almost certain the phrase I used consisted of a different second word than that. Jen immediately opened her eyes, saw the wave approaching and pounced upright. Panicked, we grabbed our iPhones, purses and towels.

“Have you been there yet?” That is the question being asked around town since Blue Fish Gallery opened its doors in July of 2013.

The idea for the gallery began when some-one asked owner Cheryl Iwanowsky what she would do if she won a million dollars.

“I’ve always wanted to open up a nice little gallery that would be unpretentious, friendly & inviting, full of beautiful and unusual items. Art should be part of our everyday life, not just some unattainable masterpiece we view at the Louvre.” It was a great moment when she realized: “I don’t need a million dollars to do it!”

So, out of a neglected little 1923 house near the Harbour Quay came a lovely sea-port blue shop with white trim, complete with a chalkboard outside for the public to share ideas and drawings of their own.

Blue Fish has quickly become a favourite destination for local and visiting shoppers looking for unique, hand made pottery, woodwork, jewelry, leather bags, clothing, and just beautiful gifts of all kinds.

Please stop by to browse Monday to Sat-urday, 10:30am to 5:30 pm.

Blue Fish Gallery is located at the corner of 2nd and Mar Streets in the Uptown area.

It’s the price we pay for entertainmentFrom / A3

We started running away from the water. As the enormous wave caught our legs, my towel was snatched back by the ocean.

When I went to dig it out of the wet sand my friend noticed that her right nipple had popped out of her bikini and there was a gaggle of gawkers who

clearly didn’t mind. Mortified, she yanked on her top to cover it back up, but pulled the fabric so hard that her left one also made an appearance.

The sunbathing onlookers were all laughing, and so was I. The entire incident felt hysterical as it was happening, but since Jen’s such a

prude and never one to seek attention about her body, it became increasingly funnier to me as the day progressed.

It almost felt like it was payback for all the free entertainment we’d received people-watching on our trip.

Jen would have much preferred that I pay the price rather

than her, but I’m sure she’s grateful it all happened too fast for anyone to grab their phones and start taking video, because hilarity like that could have gone viral.

Sorry, Jennifer. Anything for a laugh.
