A Message from the Principal

Albany Senior High School commenced in 1918 as a

district high school in York Street. Subsequently, we

moved to the new site on the north western side of

Mount Clarence which was officially opened in 1925.

The iconic buildings are a beacon within the City of

Albany and are a symbol of success to its thousands of

graduates.

The school’s vision statement, “A tradition of opportunity

and success”, connects our past with an unfolding

future. Our history reflects proud traditions, which

include our iconic blazer with its distinctive green, brown

and yellow stripes and our school crest.

The school’s crest contains the words, “Keep Troth”,

reflecting the notion of commitment to being true to

oneself, the school and the greater community. This

commitment is clearly seen in the staff and students’ attitude to Country Week where our teams have

bought back the prized Champion School trophy again in 2015. Our commitment to the overall

community is seen in the engagement in a number of environmental projects. This is seen in our marine

studies program where staff and students are part of the process of monitoring the health of our

community’s pristine marine environment.

Our Values Charter captures what is important to the school community. We place a high priority on the

educative process. Our emphasis on fundamental literacy and the capacity to find and utilise information,

especially with the use of Information Communications Technologies, means that our students are being

prepared to live in the 21st Century and contribute positively in society.

We offer a wide range of courses from Year 7 to 12. This involves extensive tertiary entrance and

vocational subjects with the overall goal of assisting senior students to find an educational pathway that

matches their abilities and their life experiences. The school reflects on the past while looking to the

future in preparing our students to be successful citizens in an ever changing world.

I encourage you to browse Albany Senior High School’s Website to learn more about our school:

Year 9

2021 We welcome our new Year 9 students to Albany Senior High School (ASHS) for 2021! Our goal is to provide the best possible learning outcomes for our students. We know that parents are a vital part of this process and welcome your interest and participation in achieving maximum learning outcomes for our students. At High School, unlike Primary School, students are taught by around ten teachers, each of whom has expertise in the learning area being taught. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers to discuss their child’s progress. We appoint a Year Coordinator who will assist and follow your child in their academic and social school life, for their remaining years at ASHS. We endeavour to provide our students a safe, happy learning environment. We work to develop a culture of character where respect, patience, self-discipline, tolerance and joy for learning are among the values we hope to instil in our students.

Year 9 Elective Subject Costs 2021

Students in Lower School are required to meet educational outcomes in a variety of learning areas. Elective courses in Lower School enable students to meet these outcomes in The Arts and Technologies. ASHS students have access to some specialised subjects which are resource rich but expensive to run. Students do not need to enrol in high cost electives to meet the outcome of their course and there are alternative courses available, as part of a student’s Voluntary Contributions. The cost of each subject is made up of either a 100% Voluntary Contribution or a combination of a Voluntary Contribution and a Compulsory Charge. Subjects that do not incur a Compulsory Charge are shaded GREY in this selection book. Subject prices are indicative only and are subject to change. The payment of a Subject Charge is compulsory. Parents/caregivers should consider their financial situation prior to enrolling in high cost courses. Failure to pay for a high cost elective will result in your child being placed into a lower cost elective. Payment arrangements are available to all families. Please contact the school for further information.

Secondary Assistance Scheme

Parents with a current Health Care or Pension Concession Card will have access to the Secondary

Assistance Scheme (SAS). This scheme provides funding to assist with the payment of School Voluntary

Contributions for Lower School students. The school will supply further information about this in Term 4

of the school year; applications will need to be made at the school during Term 1.

It is expected that all School Charges will be paid in full prior to the end of Term 3 each year.

Please Note: Albany Senior High School uses the services of a Debt Collection agency to recover all outstanding Charges.

SUBJECT COSTS IN THIS BOOKLET HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD

LEARNING AREA: MATHEMATICS COMPULSORY COURSE In Years 7 to 10, students will be undertaking study in the following strands of the Western Australian Curriculum (Mathematics), as set out by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). The proficiencies reinforce the significance of working mathematically within the content and describe how the content is explored. They provide the language to build in the developmental aspects of the learning of mathematics. For detailed content descriptions in each of the content strands above, refer to the latest version of the WA version of the Australian Curriculum from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) at www.scsa.wa.edu.au. In Years 8, 9 and 10, students will be placed in classes following three pathways (Pathways 1, 2 and 3) which are best matched to their prior achievement in Mathematics, based on teacher recommendation and the student’s class ranking. There are opportunities for students to move between classes during the year, dependent on their level of achievement on assessment tasks and subject to maximum class sizes. In all cases, consultation between the Mathematics teacher and the Head of Learning Area (Mathematics) takes place before student movement occurs. For students in Years 7-10 there will be flexibility to allow students to move between pathways, usually at the end of Term 1, Semester 1 and at other times throughout the year, on the recommendation of the student’s Mathematics teacher. This is done in consultation with the Head of Learning Area (Mathematics) and based on the student’s results on assessment tasks. Classes for a particular year are based on the students’ level of achievement demonstrated in the previous year.

LEARNING AREA: ENGLISH COMPULSORY COURSE Reliable sources report that English is the most enjoyable subject at school! Okay, so maybe English teachers are a little biased in their view. English is, however, a most thought provoking and interesting subject. English is organised into three interrelated strands that support students’ growing understanding and use of Standard Australian English. Together, the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in Writing and Creating, Reading and Viewing, and Listening and Speaking Outcomes. The three strands are:

Language: knowing about the English language

Literature: understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature

Literacy: expanding the repertoire of English usage Most people are very familiar with the Reading and Writing Outcomes in English, but Viewing, Speaking and Listening are possibly less familiar. Viewing provides students with the opportunity to analyse visual texts such as; television news, television drama, film, works of art, graphic design, digital and print advertising, while speaking and listening facilitates the study of aural texts as well as encouraging students to develop and demonstrate effective communication skills both as speakers and listeners. As students move through their schooling the texts they encounter for analysis and the texts they compose increase in complexity.

LEARNING AREA: HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES COMPULSORY COURSE As a part of their learning in the Social Sciences, students will study units and conduct investigations in line with the Western Australian Curriculum. Contexts studied are: History; Economics & Business; Geography; Civics & Citizenship

LEARNING AREA: HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION COMPULSORY COURSE

Physical and Health Education provides students with an understanding of health issues and the skills for confident participation in sport and recreation activities. This enables students to make responsible decisions about health and physical activity and to promote their own and others’ health and wellbeing.

Students are required to participate in all areas and must have swimming attire and a sports uniform consisting of black sports shorts, a green sports shirt and appropriate footwear.

If students cannot participate they must bring a signed note from a parent/carer stating why they cannot participate. A Medical Certificate is needed for prolonged inability to participate.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ASSESSMENT: Movement and Physical Activity Strand

General Physical Education Program Semester 1 The Year 9 Semester 1 program consists of basketball, cross country running and touch rugby.

General Physical Education Program Semester 2 Year 9 students will be participating in a Sports Education program during their weekly lessons. The students will further develop their skills in the sport of volleyball, with the emphasis of the program on students’ ability to work effectively as part of a team rather than just the practical skills of the sports. The Sports Education approach to Physical Education highlights the importance of all aspects of sport including participation in games, refereeing and officiating. Students will experience a variety of roles associated with being part of a sporting team. Year 9 students will complete our athletics program with the expectation that all students will participate in the school athletics carnival. They will then be involved in beach based recreational activities until the end of term. HEALTH EDUCATION

ASSESSMENT: Personal, Social and Community Health Strand

Students in Year 9 need to maintain a positive outlook on their world and to learn strategies to assist in taking control of their future. Further development of students' capacity for positive self-talk, goal-setting, perseverance and optimistic thinking is important in these years. Students should recognise and use family, school, online and community resources to seek help for themselves and others when support is needed. Students also explore how societal attitudes and values reinforce stereotypes and role expectations and how they affect young peoples’ sense of self and shape the choices they make in relation to health behaviours, health care options, help-seeking strategies and physical activity participation.

Page 10: ALBANY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

10

LEARNING AREA: HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION (Continued) COMPULSORY COURSE Students will investigate a range of health issues relevant to young people including mental health, sexual health, healthy eating, personal safety, body image and behaviours associated with substance use. As they do so, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills (such as early help seeking strategies, assertive behaviours, conflict resolution, emergency care and first aid management skills) to appropriately respond to a range of situations where their own or others' wellbeing may be at risk. In Health Education critical and creative thinking skills will be developed through learning experiences that encourage the seeking of solutions to health issues through the design of effective and appropriate strategies for promoting personal and community health and wellbeing. Health Education enhances ICT learning by assisting students to effectively and safely access online health information and services in order to manage their own health and wellbeing. Students further develop their understanding of the role ICTs plays in young peoples’ lives and relationships. They will explore the nature of these tools and the implications for establishing and managing relationships in the twenty-first century.
