Tuesday 9 June | Week 8, Term 2
UNDER 8s’ MORNING
While it was not quite our usual extravaganza, our children in Prep to Year 2 had lots of fun celebrating being under 8 last Monday. In a modified version of Under 8s’ morning, class teachers organised a range of activities for their own classes, which all students thoroughly enjoyed.
Prep 2021 Children who were born between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 are eligible for Prep in 2021. In lieu of our usual Prep information sessions, our school has developed a range of online resources to allow prospective parents the opportunity to find out more about our school. Information, including videos can found on our school website. Virtual school tours can also be booked with Beth Henderson or Katie Falcnik.
If your child will be starting Prep next year, or you know someone who is enrolling their child at Albany Hills, please make sure we have the enrolment form. It is important that we have an accurate picture of our Prep enrolments to assist us with our planning to ensure we are able to best meet the needs of our new students. Please remember you must provide a birth certificate before a child can be enrolled. I would like to thank Katie Falcnik, Chappy Glenn and Beth Henderson for their hard work to make this resource possible. They have put a lot of time and effort into planning and organising these resources to ensure a smooth transition to school for our future families. Lost Property It is only the first week of winter and already our lost property tubs are overflowing with jumpers. Please ensure your child’s name is marked in an easily found position on all of their belongings so that they can be returned to their owner.
Semester 1 Reporting As you will be aware, the disruption to school routines as a result of the Queensland government’s response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has resulted in changes to the teaching, learning, assessment, and reporting at Albany Hills.
The Department of Education has modified the requirements for reporting student academic achievement for Semester 1, 2020. Schools will provide a report using the information that they have available from Term 1 and Term 2, 2020. This will be modified from the usual planned assessment program.
The information below provides a summary of how Semester 1 report cards will look for students at Albany Hills:

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. While we are not offering face to face meetings at this time, teachers do value the opportunity to communicate with families either by email or a phone call.

ICAS News...
IMPORTANT UPDATE ABOUT ICAS
The current health directive from the state government states that we must limit interactions at school between year levels. This unfortunately means that, at this stage, ICAS may not be going ahead for 2020 as we do not have the resources to support students sitting the test under those conditions.
If that directive changes prior to the registration closing date of 29 July, we will adjust this decision accordingly. Please note that if we do open ICAS to students at that stage, there will be a much shorter registration period. We will update families as directives are revised.

PREP STUDENTS INVESTIGATE WATERPROOF MATERIALS
Our Prep students have been learning that you ‘investigate’ when you ask questions and look carefully to discover the facts. The students have been having fun experimenting with materials and working out which are waterproof and why.

HATCHING CHICKENS DURING LEARNING AT HOME
During the COVID-19 “Learning at Home”, I put 12 eggs in an incubator to see if they would hatch. We got
the eggs from a produce store. To make them hatch, I had to roll the eggs 180 degrees every single day,
three times a day.
It takes 21 days for the chickens to form and then can take up to 12 hours to hatch. Before they hatch you
can hear them cheeping inside their egg. This is called ‘pipping’. When the chickens hatch, they can go 72
hours without food and water because they get all the nutrients they need from the egg.
I was very excited when nine of my 12 eggs hatched. When the chickens hatched we put them under a
special light to keep them warm.
Next term in Year 5 we will be learning about animal adaptations as part of Science.

VIRTUAL CROSS COUNTY
In the final three weeks of home schooling, Met North School Sport hosted a virtual cross country.
Students had to run their age group distance. For me it was 3 kilometres and I had to use an app to record
my official time. l, along with 11 other students from our school, participated in the event. The champion
school will be the school who had the most entries. Winning students will receive a medal and certificate. I
think it was a great idea to have a virtual cross country for people like me who really enjoy running.
