GRADUATION 2008

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR

Professor John Raine, BE(Hons)(NZ), PhD, CEng, FIMechE, FIPENZ, MSAE

I am delighted to welcome you to our 2008 graduation ceremonies. Capping ceremonies are the crowning event of the year for all universities and are a time of celebration for graduands, families, academic staff and general university staff. The pursuit of knowledge is exciting but also involves hard work, and you can rightly feel that you have earned your award today. We particularly welcome Massey distance learning graduands. Many of you have combined jobs, family commitments and study with little of the normal support available to on-campus students. New Zealand needs many well educated university graduates to enable us to lift our economic performance, to accelerate social development, and to enrich our society culturally. Each year I am impressed at our graduation ceremonies at the huge talent that is being launched into the workforce. I congratulate all of today's graduands and wish all of you an exciting and rewarding career. Universities in New Zealand are in the midst of change as the government re-shapes its funding model for tertiary education. We look forward to a greater emphasis on funding of high quality research-led university degree programmes, first class facilities, and an environment that attracts top academic staff internationally to work with our students. Research is one of three key elements in our quest for excellence, together with teaching and community engagement. Massey participates in five of the Government funded Centres of Research Excellence, and hosts the Riddet Centre (Advancing Knowledge in Foods and Biologicals), which from 2007 has CoRE status. In October 2007 we also marked our

commitment to advanced research with the launching at Massey University Auckland of the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study, which will host some of the country’s top theoretical scientists. The University works closely with our community in teaching, consultancy and research. Massey's social science researchers continue to contribute to research needs of North Shore City, Rodney District and Waitakere City and this underscores our engagement with our local community. Massey's e-Centre Ltd provides high technology consultancy and commercialisation services, and manages the incubation of young businesses, some emerging from the results of our staff research. It is an outstanding example of links that have been made with local business and industry. Massey University’s strong reputation will be upheld by our graduates, people like yourselves who have shown the ability to meet challenges and apply your learning. Thank you for studying at Massey University. You go into the world not only with our very best wishes, but also as alumni who can regard Massey as an ongoing friend and partner for lifelong learning. Professor John K. Raine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Auckland and International

By the authority of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal and Hereditary Marshal of England, the Kings of Arms assigned arms to Massey University on the tenth day of May 1967. THE ARMS ARE DEFINED AS –

Gyronny of ten argent and azure a mullet gules fimbriated argent and irradiated or and for the crest on a wreath of the colours issuant from flames proper a ram’s head argent horned and ensigned by the horns of the African long legged ram. On a scroll appear the words “floreat scientia” which broadly defined means: ‘May knowledge flourish’.

The symbolism of the design is interpreted as follows-

The star is from the Arms of New Zealand. Here it also represents knowledge and learning and so has been irradiated. It is in the centre of the shield being the central theme of the University. The background, a gyronny of 10 pieces in blue and white, represents the 10 degrees first offered by the University.

The crest is the ram’s head that was used in former years by the Students’ Association. This, with its four horns, is unusual and memorable and provides a link with agriculture and the former college. There are many ram’s head crests used in heraldry, so this one is made distinctive by proceeding from flames of learning. The flames also suggest, phoenix-like, the idea of a new body being born out of an old.

CEREMONIAL MACE In medieval times the mace was a weapon, a heavy staff or club made wholly or partly from metal and used for breaking armour. It acquired a ceremonial function in 13th century France when it was carried by the king’s bodyguard as a symbol of all kinds of secular authority. In the middle-ages it was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. It is customary at some universities, and Massey University, for the mace bearer (the Graduation Marshal) to organise and lead the academic procession as protector of the Chancellor, university officials, graduates and graduands.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The distinctive graduation gowns had their origin in the High Middle Ages, 12th and 13th centuries. The early universities grew up in the shadow of the church and therefore the cap, gown and hood grew out of the clerical dress of that period. Cap The mortarboard or trencher is relatively young and descends from a favourite headdress of the medieval laity, the pileus. This was a close fitting felt cap that was adopted by the Church in 1311 and became typical at universities. There are two varieties: the bonnet and the trencher. The bonnet is a beret-like soft-cap, most similar to the pileus, and the trencher a hard top square-type hat with a tassel fastened in the middle. Gowns The gown is based on the long full-flowing robe in general use in the Middle Ages, by both clergy and laity. Our Bachelor gowns have long, full, wide-mouthed sleeves whereas Doctors and Masters wear a gown of Tudor origin with long closed sleeves ending in a pocket-like extension which may have been used to carry papers, snacks, and the like.

Page 16: Albany Grad Prog - working copyresearch.massey.ac.nz/massey/fms//campuses/Auckland/Document… · 4 PART III MORNING CEREMONY 10.30am, Wednesday 16 April 2008 College of Business

16

Hoods The hood is the most colourful element of the academic garb. It is another medieval relic which descended from the cowls worn by monks to ward off cold drafts. When not required for warmth, the head covering was pushed off to hang down the back as we see it today. The square tail of today’s hoods is the remnant of the short cape which kept the shoulders warm, and the blind tail, which would originally have been longer, was pulled round the throat to keep the head covering in place. Our Bachelor hoods appear grander with their fur trim than those of our Masters and Doctors. A possible monastic explanation for this difference is that the Masters could command the best seats near the fire and hence had less need for the additional insulation of a fur-lined hood. Stole The stole is a late 20th century addition to our robing traditions. It is based on another ecclesiastical garment, worn like a long scarf draped down the front of the gown. Known variously as stoles, scarves or sashes in different institutions, they are increasingly being introduced to give recognition to recipients of diplomas, who previously could wear only the undergraduate’s black gown. Principal Officers’ Robes The form of the Principal Officers’ robes within the Official Procession is as follows: • Chancellor

Silk University blue damask with facings of gold oak leaf lace. Gold ornaments to sleeves and sleeve cuffs edged with gold plate lace. Facings and shoulder wings trimmed with light blue taffeta and bears the University’s Coat of Arms on each shoulder. The Chancellor is the Chairperson of the University Council (and, therefore, oversees all governance matters pertaining to the university). He/she presides over all ceremonial events including the graduation ceremonies. The Chancellor is elected by the members of the University Council on an annual basis.

• Vice-Chancellor Silk University blue damask, with silver sleeve ornaments and facings of silver lace. Facings and shoulder wings of light blue taffeta and bears the University’s Coat of Arms on each shoulder. The Vice Chancellor is the most senior administrator and academic leader in the university. He/she is responsible for chairing senior management and academic meetings, for overseeing the administration of the university, and for ensuring that all academic matters required of a university are met. The Vice Chancellor is appointed by the Council.

• Pro Vice-Chancellor The academic dress of their own university at which they were awarded their highest degree.

There are five Pro Vice-Chancellors, each of whom are the academic and administrative leaders of the five Colleges.

• Deputy Vice-Chancellor Silk University blue damask, dispensing with sleeve ornaments with facings of silver lace. Facings and shoulder wings of light blue taffeta and bears the University’s Coat of Arms on each shoulder. The university has three Regional Deputy Vice-Chancellors, each of whom is responsible for a particular campus and other specific duties including extramural studies, international students and external relations.

DOCTORS OF PHILOSOPHY Amal Al-Dujaily, in Information Systems D Hayley Ann Lawrence, in Genetics Guangjin Lu, in Food Technology

RESEARCH OUTLINE FOR DOCTORAL GRADUANDS AMAL AL-DUJAILY – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems

Ms Al-Dujaily’s research focused on the personality effect in the design of adaptive e-learning systems. The research investigated the potential role of personality in e-learning systems, and how future adaptive e-learning systems could embody the personality feature to address each individual’s differences. Empirical experiments in two different countries, Oman and New Zealand, where students had different learning styles were involved. Firstly, findings showed learners with different personality types have different effects on their learning performance with adaptive e-learning. Consequently, inclusion of the personality feature in the design of e-learning systems to improve the learners’ performance is proposed. Secondly, findings confirmed that co-operation between different types of personalities could motivate better, collaborative, learning experiences. Therefore, these results have implications for informing future research regarding different personality traits for an effective learning experience.

HAYLEY ANN LAWRENCE – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics

Ms Lawrence focused on the use of genetic techniques to gain and apply knowledge for conserving the world’s most endangered seabird, the Chatham Island Tāiko. Surprisingly, high levels of genetic variation were found, which is unusual for such a rare species with a population size of only 120-150 individuals. However, results indicated this variation could be lost in just a few generations. Ms Lawrence’s research also provided understanding of sex-ratios, mating systems and behaviour in the Tāiko. Ancient DNA was used from subfossil bones to investigate the Tāiko’s history. Sequencing of DNA from a museum specimen led to the identification of the enigmatic

Magenta Petrel as a Tāiko. Genetics was further used to investigate relationships (hokopapa/whakapapa) between birds, suggesting that there are more Tāiko yet to be found. Findings could aid in the search for more individuals, which is important for the continued survival of the species.

GUANGJIN LU – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Food Technology

Mr Lu investigated a novel strategy by using controlled atmosphere (CA) in combination with lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus reuteri DPC16, to control common foodborne pathogens, and, therefore, enhance the safety and extend the shelf life of seafood products. His results showed that CA significantly reduced the growths of all tested foodborne pathogens. He also demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of Lactobacillus reuteri DPC16 against these pathogens through the production of antimicrobial compound reuterin. A combined inhibitory effect on L. monocytogenes was achieved through a combination of L. reuteri DPC16 and CA, which could not be achieved by any one of the individual factors alone. Based on these findings, it is proposed that a comprehensive and novel strategy, incorporating L. reuteri DPC16 and a controlled atmosphere, could be developed to control foodborne pathogens in seafood products.

DOCTORS OF PHILOSOPHY Jane Elizabeth Bone, in Education Helen Dorothy Hedges, in Education Roberta Kathleen Hunter, in Education Michael Ray Irwin, in Education

RESEARCH OUTLINE FOR DOCTORAL GRADUANDS JANE ELIZABETH BONE – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Ms Bone focused on the support given to the spiritual experience of young children in three early childhood settings. The bicultural early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, includes a spiritual dimension. Qualitative case studies were set up in a Montessori casa, a private preschool, and a Steiner kindergarten. Young children, parents and teachers participated. The research involved making a video and taking photographs, in addition to participant observation, interviews and focus groups. Using writing as a means of discovery and the analysis of emergent themes, case studies revealed that the central concept of everyday spirituality was an aspect of daily pedagogical practice. The themes of spiritual withness, spiritual in-betweenness and the spiritual elsewhere were explored in narratives that described ways of being together, rites, rituals and transformations. This thesis acknowledged context and culture and argued that early childhood environments support spiritual experiences.

HELEN DOROTHY HEDGES – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Ms Hedges’ research focused on the co-construction by teachers and children of an early childhood curriculum built on children’s interests. Ms Hedges assumed the role of “critical friend” to teachers in two early childhood centres during her research. Her findings challenge and extend the conceptual frameworks of funds of knowledge and communities of inquiry. She juxtaposes these frameworks in a model of sociocultural curriculum and pedagogy to explain teachers' and children's individual and collaborative interests, inquiries and knowledge construction. She proposes a new perspective on children’s interests to recognise their fundamental inquiries and

Page 44: Albany Grad Prog - working copyresearch.massey.ac.nz/massey/fms//campuses/Auckland/Document… · 4 PART III MORNING CEREMONY 10.30am, Wednesday 16 April 2008 College of Business

44

encourage a more analytical interpretation of the term “children’s interests”. Ms Hedges’ research also clarifies the concept of “working theories” in children's learning. In addition, her research justifies the contribution of teachers’ interests to curriculum and explains the professional knowledge of teachers as evidence-informed rather than evidence-based. Finally, Ms Hedges’ research validates the notion in teacher-researcher partnerships of a “critical friend” who takes sufficient time to understand the context of the work of teachers, and to assist them in integrating research, practice and professional learning.

ROBERTA KATHLEEN HUNTER – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Ms Hunter explored how two teachers developed communities of mathematical inquiry, which facilitated student access to, and use of, a range of proficient mathematical practices. A collaborative design approach supported the development of a communication and participation framework, which mapped out the gradual transformation of the classroom discourse patterns from those of conventional learning situations. Significant changes were revealed as the teachers progressively shifted interaction norms to engage the students in collective inquiry and argumentation. Higher levels of student involvement in mathematical dialogue resulted in increased intellectual agency and verbalised reasoning. The research findings provided insights into ways teachers can be assisted to develop pedagogical practices, which support constitution of inquiry communities. Models for ways teachers can draw on and use their Māori and Pasifika students’ ethnic socialisation to constitute mathematical communities are represented in the case study exemplars.

MICHAEL RAY IRWIN – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Mr Irwin’s research aimed to develop a clearer understanding of the learning needs of boys and in the process to identify an improved pedagogy for boys. In order to hear and record boys’ voices accurately, Mr Irwin developed a research methodology that trained boys to be co-researchers in the collecting and interpreting of material. The student researchers were found to be responsible, honest and astutely aware of educational issues within their schools. A uniformity of viewpoint was found amongst boys from differing schools and year levels. The study found that boys require clear expectations and standards, sport and physical activity, group interaction and challenge to optimise learning. A key contributing factor to a boy’s learning success is a teacher/boy relationship based on mutual respect and individual dialogue. Mr Irwin concluded that boys will feel more connected with their schools if they experience ‘matemanship’, academic success, daily opportunity for physical activity and a collaborative learning environment.

DOCTORS OF EDUCATION

Jennifer Anne Harnett Patricia Martha Stringer

RESEARCH OUTLINE FOR DOCTORAL GRADUANDS JENNIFER ANNE HARNETT– to the degree of Doctor of Education

Ms Harnett facilitated an action research study in two New Zealand primary school classrooms. The study investigated the effects of teacher knowledge and thinking on classroom learning conversations, while providing the participating teachers with opportunities to develop their professional knowledge and practice. Information was gathered through interviews and classroom observations. The findings revealed discrepancies between the teachers’ espoused theories and their theories-in-use, fragmented understanding of learning and assessment theory, and practice that was detrimentally influenced by routinised behaviours. These findings have implications for teacher education and development. Action research with an outside facilitator enabled the teachers to examine, reflect upon, and develop their classroom practice. After an initial regression there was a gradual improvement in the quality of the teachers’ learning conversations. Ms Harnett’s study, while highlighting the time required to effect change in teacher practice, demonstrated the effectiveness of classroom-based action research as a model for reflective professional development.

PATRICIA MARTHA STRINGER – to the degree of Doctor of Education

Ms Stringer’s study explored capacity building for school improvement in one low decile, multi-cultural, New Zealand primary school. Capacity building research has generally focused on the micro level of school functioning. There has been an absence of debate on political, economic and social trends with implications for capacity building. School improvement and capacity building are complex constructs with depth of understanding only achieved by exploring external and internal determinants. A case study inquiry situated within an interpretivist research paradigm was used. Qualitative techniques for data collection and a grounded theory approach for data

analysis defined capacity, ascertained its external and internal influences, and established links between capacity building and school improvement. Findings showed that capacity building is the result of situated activity; connectedness; governance, leadership and management; and capacity outcomes. This thesis has taken a fresh look at what schools do to meet challenges of change and improvement, productively.

DOCTORS OF PHILOSOPHY David John Moore, in Management Systems and Ergonomics D Barbara Anne Plester, in Management

RESEARCH OUTLINE FOR DOCTORAL GRADUANDS DAVID JOHN MOORE – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management Systems and Ergonomics

Mr Moore investigated the context, scale and cost of loss of control events (LCE) involving quadbikes on New Zealand farms. The single, greatest area of concern in farm safety, identified by the Department of Labour, is the 70,000 quadbikes in use in New Zealand; each year there are on average seven deaths and in excess of NZ$3.6 million paid out by ACC for quadbike-related injuries. Mr Moore used a systems approach for off-road investigations, involving a modified event sequence chart, which was drawn from the ergonomics, forensic psychology and aviation fields. Environmental context-dependent cues and scale models were used to assist recall. An interactive quadbike LCE model was also developed for analysis. The research identified the need for interventions relating to farm management, work organisation, regulation, vehicle design, and rider awareness. Research findings aim to help reduce injuries in the future.

BARBARA ANNE PLESTER – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Management

Ms Plester’s research explored the relationship between humour and organisational culture in four New Zealand companies from different industries. A mixed-model approach was used and an assessment tool was created to compare levels of formality and/or informality in the organisations studied. Ms Plester created a theoretical model to explain significant aspects of the relationship between humour and organisational culture. She contends that formality and/or informality influence humour and organisational culture. Her research found that within organisations, boundaries were created and these constrained

Page 58: Albany Grad Prog - working copyresearch.massey.ac.nz/massey/fms//campuses/Auckland/Document… · 4 PART III MORNING CEREMONY 10.30am, Wednesday 16 April 2008 College of Business

58

and/or enabled humour activities. Specific individuals (identified as either jokers or gatekeepers) assumed dichotomous roles and within these roles either challenged or constrained the humour boundaries. Organisational members perceived that humour and organisational culture have both positive and negative impacts upon workplace outcomes.

RESEARCH OUTLINES FOR DOCTORAL GRADUANDS KARIN DU PLESSIS – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology

Ms Du Plessis explored attachment bonds and their association with conflict beliefs, conflict resolution behaviour and relationship satisfaction in intimate relationships. Two separate studies were used to examine individuals in committed relationships. Findings showed how conflict beliefs and relationship satisfaction were specifically tied to an individual’s attachment to their romantic partner. However, conflict resolution behaviour was more complex. This behaviour was associated with conflict beliefs, romantic partner attachment and the individual’s attachment to parents. These results indicate the importance of conflict behaviour learned in the context of the bonds with parents as it still impacts on conflict behaviour in the current intimate relationship. The research findings have implications for attachment theory and how researchers understand couples’ conflict resolution behaviour, as well as therapists’ understanding of these concepts in distressed couples.

JACQUELINE SUSAN FEATHER – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology

Ms Feather’s research addressed the need for effective therapy for children with trauma from child abuse. Using local knowledge and experience combined with international research on evidence-based treatments, a trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy programme for New Zealand children was developed and evaluated. The research was carried out in a specialist setting designed to assist abused children. The children who participated had been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of abuse. Overall findings showed that with treatment, PTSD symptoms decreased and self-reported coping increased. Gains generally maintained or continued to improve over follow-up intervals. Initially tested with Pakeha, with adaptations, the treatment was found to be equally helpful for children and families of Māori , Pacific and other cultures. The results support the use of evidence-based treatments and research in child abuse and child protection settings, and highlight the contribution psychologists can make to ensure quality outcomes for this vulnerable population.

GRANT MARC GILLON – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy

Mr Gillon’s research examined the unique factors that contributed to the success or otherwise of New Zealand’s first three coalition governments under MMP from 1996 to 2002. Primarily using key informant interviews, Mr Gillon studied and assessed the relevant impacts of three influences on these coalitions, namely: policy, personality and opportunity. Mr Gillon’s research investigated the factors which contributed to each government’s formation, continuation or termination. Each of these stages was found to reflect the competing interests of the parties, with politicians motivated by, and juggling, conflicting goals. Mr Gillon’s research found that although parties' policies and politicians' ambitions were influential in determining the success of any coalition, a crucial and previously overlooked component is the inherent intra-party and inter-party relationships in a coalition.

MARIA TALAITUPU KERSLAKE – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology

Ms Kerslake’s research examined structural adjustment programmes which have been promoted globally by international financial institutions as an answer to the financial problems of developing countries. Ms Kerslake examined the history of these programmes in the Independent State of Samoa, focusing specifically on the restructuring and privatisation of a government utility, namely the former Public Works Department (PWD). Ms Kerslake compared the claims made for the reform process by development economists, development consultants and planners, politicians and reform managers, with the experiences of those directly involved in various roles in the privatisation process. She found important differences between the claims made by the respective groups and concluded that people in different positions in the reform process have different experiences of the same programmes, and that their experiences are significantly influenced by their social status within Samoan society. Ms Kerslake’s research identified valuable lessons which can be applied to future reforms to assist against negative social and organisational impacts.

CARINA LETIZIA MEARES – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology

Ms. Meares used a biographical narrative method to describe and analyse the gendered experience of migration from South Africa to New Zealand. She conducted in-depth interviews with South African migrants from divergent groups, intensively analysed their ‘migration stories’ and generated a series of detailed individual case studies. After noting the incidence of migration-related disruption across each of the case studies, she used the idea of biographical disruption to develop new ways of describing, explaining and representing the gendered experience of international migration. Ms Meares used these tools to examine the effect of migration on the gender dynamics of South African migrants’ intimate relationships, concluding that international migration affects gender dynamics in diverse and sometimes contradictory ways.

ANNETTE CLAIRE MORTENSEN – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology

Ms Mortensen’s research focused on the integration of refugee groups into the New Zealand health system. The 1987 review of refugee resettlement policy, which established an annual quota of 750 places, has given priority to those with the highest health and social needs and removed preferences for specific national, ethnic and religious groups. Significantly, in the 1990s radical neo-liberal economic reforms were introduced and publicly provided health, education and welfare systems were restructured. This posed serious challenges to the core idea of social citizenship in general in New Zealand society. Noticeable ethnic diversification has been just one element of the resettlement policy changes; the other has been long-term social and economic exclusion in the refugee groups settled since this time. Ms Mortensen’s qualitative study indicates that New Zealand’s notably humanitarian refugee resettlement policy is not matched by adequate central government and public institutional responses and resources with which to integrate refugee groups.

RICHARD BERESFORD NIGHTINGALE – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Policy

Mr Nightingale examined the dynamics of shaping a Māori workforce within New Zealand from 1935 – 1975, as an outcome of colonial engagements under the capitalist system. Māori labour formed a second stage in terms of the need for industrial labour power for manufacturing production, particularly after World War II. A plethora of government initiatives were unilaterally justified on the grounds of progress, perceived to be for the benefit of Māori and the nation. These policies were instituted during a period of enormous change in Māori society and in the configuration of relationships between Māori and Pakeha. The thesis identified the nature and form of Māori responses to government policies. In particular, the retreat by Māori from issues of class deprivation to the promotion of issues that centred on loss of land, language and culture are noted.

OPETI MANISELA TALIAI – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Anthropology

Mr Taliai's thesis is a critique of social moiety division. It offers an alternative dimension to how the struggle for power of control works in Tonga. Central to the discussion is addressing the struggle through the dialectical relationships involving the three kingly historical dynasties as backbones of Tongan society. The discussion offers a critical evaluation of the Hegelian theory of dialectics, as explained through Slavoj Zizek’s theory of “the universal exception”. This leads onto a collapse of the widely rationalistic use of dualism theory in the social sciences. Moiety division, in that sense, becomes a universal ideology abstracted from the particular social reality of various individual interests contradicting one another. A significant outcome in this historical legitimation of economic and political power in Tonga is the implosion of the first two dynasties to become the present one universal ruling dynasty.

MEI WAH MARJORIE WILLIAMS – to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology

Ms Williams investigated and extended the self-control theory of crime. Low self-control is ranked as one of the strongest risk factors for crime but its lack of explanatory power has been a concern. Integrating self-control theory with the theory of planned behaviour led to the study’s aims: to ascertain the mechanism by which a person with low self-control is at greater risk for crime; and to increase the explanatory power of self-control theory. Three groups, namely, male and female students, and prison inmates were used. Low self-control was predictive of behavioural intentions to do crime for a prison population, but not for students. The proximate determinants of crime, normative influence and perceived control, exerted considerable influence on crime, increasing the explanatory value of self-control theory. The results have implications for including significant others and behavioural control variables in understanding the causes of crime.
