Proclamation 6y qovemor Bill Walker WHEREAS, we recognize that Alaskan students are members of an increasingly connected digital society; and WHEREAS, Alaska's educational institutions all use Internet-connected devices in their programs, from public correspondence, charter, and neighborhood schools to private schools and universities; and WHEREAS, in our state's schools, curriculum is increasingly being accessed through a variety of online learning platforms that transform the way our students explore, create, connect, and learn; and WHEREAS, Alaskan school districts are leveraging digital resources to provide innovative, meaningful, and equitable educational experiences across the state; and WHEREAS, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) is committed to creating a culture of learning that prepares students for 21 century jobs and lives; and WHEREAS, DEED is committed to supporting educators and parents in preparing students to use digital media while limiting the risks of the online world, such as loss of privacy, cyberbullying, and copyright infringement; and WHEREAS, during the 2017-2018 school year, DEED is providing classroom resources and establishing a statewide network to help promote and encourage responsible digital citizenship; and WHEREAS, the Walker/Mallott Administration is dedicated to building a Smarter Alaska, where all Alaskans help prepare our youth to make safe, smart, and ethical decisions in a digital world; and WHEREAS, raising awareness of responsible digital citizenship is beneficial to the safety and well-being of our students, their families, and Alaskan communities. NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim September 25-29, 2017 as: AlaskaDigital Citizenship in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to increase their awareness of how to be responsible digital citizens.
