The AIA Alaska Design Awards Program was established in 1965 to promote community awareness of great designs being developed by Alaskan architects. For the past 49 years, these annual design awards have recognized buildings that both satisfy the needs of the user and significantly contribute to a stimulating built environment. Each year, architects throughout Alaska submit projects that they feel are exceptionally responsive to their clients’ needs or exhibit design excellence above and beyond competent design. These submittals include a description of the project, architectural drawings and photography. To ensure the judging of the awards is unbiased, AIA Alaska Design Awards are always judged by AIA representatives from another state’s chapter. Selected from 19 submissions, this year seven projects were recognized during the Awards Banquet held at Centennial Hall on September 20. The AIA San Francisco Chapter served as the jury, and awarded two HONOR, three MERIT, and two CITATION awards for projects that best exemplify Alaska’s northern design requirements, sustainability, site/context sensitivity, and innovative design. HONOR: RESIDENTIAL REMODEL OF “H HOUSE”, ANCHORAGE ARCHITECT: PETRA SATTLER-SMITH, AIA PROJECT TEAM General Contractor: RP Construction, LLC, Anchorage Landscape Design: Intrinsic Landscapes, LLC, Chad Taylor, Anchorage Structural Engineers: Arete, LLC; Seth Anderson, Anchorage. Renderings: Kevin G. Smith Photography, Anchorage PROJECT OVERVIEW: With a taut palette and a few bold insertions, the architect has remade the spirit of this original modern home into a carefully choreographed procession. The jury admired the attention to the play of light in the new spaces that permit your sense of the space to change dramatically with the shifts in the seasonal light. The addition of the contemplative spaces into the domestic setting moves the project well beyond the scope of the typical remodel, and through creative detailing and reserved material choices the house becomes a set of quiet, almost poetic, spaces that simultaneously augment the underlying organization of the existing house and expand its possibilities.

Juneau (September 23, 2014) – AIA Alaska, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is honored to announce the recipients of its 2014 Design Awards for Excellence in Architecture, the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design.

PROJECT TEAM General Contractor: RP Construction, LLC, Anchorage Landscape Design: Intrinsic Landscapes, LLC, Chad Taylor, Anchorage Structural Engineers: Arete, LLC; Seth Anderson, Anchorage. Renderings: Kevin G. Smith Photography, Anchorage

PROJECT OVERVIEW: With a taut palette and a few bold insertions, the architect has remade the spirit of this original modern home into a carefully choreographed procession. The jury admired the attention to the play of light in the new spaces that permit your sense of the

space to change dramatically with the shifts in the seasonal light.

HONOR: SAMUEL SIMMONDS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, BARROW ARCHITECT: RIM ARCHITECTS, LLC

THE PROJECT TEAM Developer/Client: Arctic Slope Native Association General Contractor: UICC, LLC/SKW Eskimos, Inc. JV Healthcare Design Consultant: HDR, Inc. Photographers: Chris Arend Photography, Ari Burling, and Brian Adams PROJECT OVERVIEW: This hospital is an outstanding example of conducting design research and developing a sensitive site design to deliver an outstanding building in the harsh environment of one of the world’s northernmost communities. The jury was impressed with the architects’ success in creating a

landmark without overwhelming the scale of the surrounding community. The jury also was impressed with the interiors of this project. The architect successfully incorporated native elements from the surrounding region while also creating a modern and welcoming aesthetic. The use of wood textures and ample natural light (when available) prevent the building from feeling clinical and give patients and visitors a connection to the outdoors. MERIT: DERMATOLOGY AND SKIN CANCER CLINIC OF ALASKA, SOLDOTNA ARCHITECT: IVY & CO ARCHITECTS, MARK IVY, AIA

PROJECT TEAM: Client: Dermatology and Skin Cancer Clinic of Alaska, Dr. Matthew Cannava General Contractor John Castenholz, Soldotna Consultant: Oien Associates, Ben Oien -Eagle River Photographer: GA Panorams – Google 360° Business Views for Alaska, Glenn Aronwits

PROJECT OVERVIEW: The unique upward curved beams of this clinic are the first thing that catches a viewer’s eye, but a closer reading reveals a sensitive approach to designing a plan that takes advantage of a forested site. The design provides a relaxing setting for patients where each room has a visual connection to the outdoors and natural light, yet still maintains privacy. We appreciated the cable-braced lateral structural system on the exterior that creates a sense of layering in the facade, the careful glass detailing, and the overall clarity_of_project.

MERIT: ALEUTIAN HOUSING PROGRAM DESIGN, ATKA ARCHITECT: Kumin Associates, Inc., Chip Banister, AIA LEED AP; Sarah Salazar, AIA PROJECT TEAM: Developer/Client: Aleutian Housing Authority w/ Cascadia Green Building Council Interior Designer: Kumin Associates, Dana Nunn, ASID Consultants: DOWL HKM, Anchorage Structural, Mechanical, Electrical Engineers: Schneider Structural Engineers; RSA Engineering Renderings: Resolution3D, Anchorage PROJECT OVERVIEW: In an exceptionally challenging context, this project proposes a thoughtful, holistic solution to building sustainably in an extreme northern climate. The jury was impressed by quality of the drawings and the inclusion of the process drawings that went into developing this project yet to be built.

MERIT: QUYANNA CARE CENTER, NOME ARCHITECT: KUMIN ASSOCIATES, INC., ANGELA BARR, AIA; JON STOLLE, AIA

PROJECT TEAM: Developer/Client: Norton Sound Health Corporation Interior Designer: Kumin Associates, Dana Nunn, ASID General Contractor: SK W, John Golick; Tim Felton - Anchorage Consultants: DOWL HKM, Anchorage; Bristol Environmental, Anchorage Structural, Mechanical, Electrical Engineers: BBFM; Notkin Engineering; Sparling, Inc. Photographer: Ken Graham Photography, Girdwood

PROJECT OVERVIEW: This design for an 18-bed long term care home in Nome is an addition to an existing health care facility. The jury was impressed by the high quality interior spaces that are sensitively lit with natural light and the attention to detail in the residents’ rooms. The connection to the outdoor landscape through the placement of the windows and a large south facing balcony gives the tribal elders a connection to their surroundings, while the placement of the building itself on 13’ piers allows for this large building to lighten its impact on the natural environment. CITATION: KETCHIKAN GATEWAY BOROUGH PROTO-TYPE TRANSIT SHELTERS ARCHITECT: MILLARD + ASSOCIATES; LINDA MILLARD, AIA

PROJECT TEAM: Client: Ketchikan Gateway Borough Transit Department General Contractor: Marble Construction, Inc. Ketchikan Consultant: R&M Engineering, Inc. Ketchikan PROJECT PROJECT OVERVIEW: The project is a compelling example of designing a deceptively simple set of prototype solutions that are deployable across a range of sites. Using locally-grown timber, a distinctive de sign and standardized detailing, the transit shelters are able to accommodate a variety of panel, roof, and seating configurations. The jury believe the clever, re-usable shelters are a model of pragmatic, sustainable, and design-oriented transit infrastructure.

CITATION: KODIAK PUBLIC LIBRARY ARCHITECT: MRV Architects, Corey Wall, AIA

PROJECT TEAM: Client: City of Kodiak General Contractor: Cornerstone General Contractors, Anchorage Photographer: Ken Graham Photography, Girdwood PROJECT OVERVIEW: This building successfully integrates a new public facility into a rural community not by copying the vernacular architecture of the area, but by sensitively incorporating design elements from traditional buildings into a well-designed contemporary structure. The jury appreciated the incorporation of local logs into the central

colonnade, the flexibility of the plan, and the overall successful creation of a warm, genuine, and inviting community space. JURY OF PEERS AWARD:
