HistoryPrior to the development of Palm Beach County, Riviera Beach was the town of Oak Lawn, Charles N. Newcombbought the Riviera Hotel in 1901 and made such extensive improvements that Henry Flagler, Andrew Carnegie, variousVanderbilts, and the Astors were frequent visitors. Newcomb purchased another 200 acres, from Lake Worth to theFlorida East Coast Railway tracks and in 1913 recorded a plat with a vision of Riviera as a resort community.Meanwhile, as early as 1906, a squatter’s community of fishermen and their families lived on the south end ofSinger Island in a small community known locally as Inlet City. Fishermen were attracted to the island as a place to drythe cotton nets that they used in those days, and for its proximity to the fertile Gulf Stream, which is closer to land inPalm Beach County than any other place in North America. About 1919 the fishing colony moved to the mainland. In the1920s, Riviera Beach was one of the largest suppliers of fish on Florida’s east coast, much of which was shipped toFulton’s Fish Market in New York. Seventy-five commercial fishing families lived in Riviera by 1922, when 17 of 26qualified voters decided to incorporate amid rumors that West Palm Beach planned to take it over; the town was renamedRiviera Beach in 1942.

TransportationInterstate 95 (I-95) serves Riviera Beach from 45th Street and Blue Heron Boulevard which also serves Singer Island.State Road 710 (SR 710) is a 57-mile northwest-southeast route connecting SR 70 near Okeechobee, three milesfrom the northern tip of Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida, to Old Dixie Highway (CR 811) in Riviera Beach.Public transit is available to the rest of Palm Beach County through the regional commuter bus system PalmTran. Inaddition free shuttle service will take passengers between the airport and Tri-Rail's West Palm Beach station starting inSeptember 2015.

The Port of Palm Beach is the 4th busiest container port of Florida’s 15 deep water ports, and it is the 20th busiestcontainer port in the United States. It is also the only South Florida port with on-dock rail. Five miles of port-ownedtrack that is directly linked to the Florida East Coast Rail Company (FEC) and switches to the CSX and NFS.

The nearest major airports, with driving distances measured from Riviera Beach City Hall, are: West Palm Beach – 11 miles south Fort Lauderdale – 57 miles south Miami – 79 miles south
