Wow! What an exciting past few weeks we’ve had down here at the Club. It’s hard tobelieve that April is coming to an end already. We started the month with ourtraditional Easter Brunch on April 5th, and as expected, we had a great turnout, with

close to 250 members and their families enjoying our fine spread of palette-pleasing courses. With Chef Rick back at the helm of our kitchen, brunch attendees were able to enjoy a widevariety of dishes, paired with our Chef’s signature flair for exceptional presentation. A big thank-you goes out to our Chef and his helpers, as well as the member volunteers who helped plan andexecute this Easter Brunch that went so smoothly. I’d especially like to thank Kathy Robinson andher crew for all of their hard work organizing and decorating for this year’s brunch.

Next up, we had CISA running its annual four-day marathon of junior sailors “learning the ropes”, with all-day clinicsthat combined coaching sessions with on-the-water tactics training. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Jerelyn Biehl, DanielleRichards, and Robbie Dean, as well as our amazing staff, we were able to run another successful CISA event.

Finally, we rounded out the month with our annual Spring Spruce-Up last week, in preparation for our upcomingOpening Day festivities. Under the direction of Jennifer Kuritz, member volunteers were able to complete many projects, including the painting of the 2nd Deck wraparound and the “Love Shack” viewing platform, as well as sprucing up our laserracks with fresh carpeting and piping to keep the laser masts in. Oh, and did you see the new Burgee painted on the boatramp? That would be the work of Martyn Bookwalter. A big thank-you goes out to Martyn for designing and painting thatBurgee for the club. And last but not least, a thank you goes out to Terri Bishop and her hard-working crew for taking thatback portion of the club lawn and creating a paved area which has been dubbed the “Lover’s Cove”. It will be soon adornedwith some comfy lawn furniture and is sure to be a great place to relax and enjoy the view. Come check it out the next timeyou’re at the Club!

One final note, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their overwhelming support in this past month,as I transitioned into my new position. The encouragement and advice that I have received from our members and the boardof directors has been incredible, and any doubts that I had coming into this have been quelled. And of course, I would beremiss if I didn’t thank our hard-working staff for their continued dedication to this Club, and for always being there with ahelping hand. I truly appreciate all that they do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Tori

manager’scorner

I would like to officially congratulate and welcome Tori Kasik on her new position as clubmanager. Tori has been with ABYC for over 10 years, and has worked very hard to positionherself to take on this role as manager jumping right in with the water damage project,

Easter Brunch and then CISA; talk about a challenging first few weeks on the job! From myperspective, Tori is doing a great job but this success does not come easy, and Tori had fullsupport from the staff, flag officers and the Board of Directors in helping make her transition assmooth as possible. I look forward to Tori growing into this new position.

Just as I promised in last months Sou’wester, we have had a ton going on at ABYC andhopefully you have had time to come down and enjoy! Let’s start off with Easter Brunch…. kids

of all ages, candy, food and great weather! I had a great time serving our members, socializing, and topping off theirbeverage of choice. Seeing all of the cute little boys and girls all dressed up is so cool, and it brings me to remember backwhen Chelsea was that age. Thank you to the staff and chef Rick for putting on an amazing spread of food, and yes, I dideat too much…thanks for that!

I am sure Jennifer will expand more in her article, but I wanted to briefly talk about Spring Spruce up. This is thetime of year that we rely on members to come down to the club and help out with pre-determined projects to beautify theclub prior to Opening Day. We had about 70 volunteers that came down to help paint, garden, landscape, clean perpetualtrophies, and organize all of our social decorations. The weather was perfect and we were able to get so much workaccomplished. Chef Rick then fired up the BBQ and served a gourmet hamburger with chicken wings and all thetrimmings…and yes there was cold beer and other refreshments. Boy, did that go down smooth! Thanks Jennifer andLatham for putting together another very successful Spring Spruce up! If you missed out put it on your schedule for nextyear, it is fun and you meet new members in the process of getting dirty!

The general membership meeting was a busy night not only conducting our meeting, but we also had the juniorfundraiser event selling bags, books, shirts, and a 50/50 raffle where we auctioned off junior time. It was fun for the

members to bid on the juniors time to help with sailing lessons for the smaller kids, boat washing, music lessons, tennis orgolf lessons, and crew for your Lido or keel boat (I think we had a member bid and get the whole team to sail on her J-boat!).All in all, the junior fundraiser was a great night and raised about a thousand bucks! Not bad, thanks go out to JenniferGolison and Allie Blecher for putting it on and making it a huge success. To round out the evening, Sam Bell’s Transpacpresentation was nothing short of amazing. The Bell family has deep history at ABYC and abroad. To hear first hand abouthow the family boat “Westward” was purchased and rebuilt only to be sailed by the family in Transpac, was very inspiring.I am sure that Sam could have talked for hours telling all of the stories, and I would have loved to hear every one of them, but the evening was running late. One thing I learned from the presentation is that Sam and I not only share the love forABYC and the ocean, but we both sailed our first Transpac at the tender age of 17! Great evening and we all wish Sam andthe Bell family a safe sail across the pacific for another Transpac race, Go ABYC!

By the time you read this it will be just after Opening Day… and if you weren’t there, aren’t you sad that youmissed it?! We will have a full report with all of the details of the raft up, the band, brats, the Opening Day festivities, andjust plain old good fun.

A quick update on the water damage-construction is coming along nicely. As of this writing, 80% of the drywallhas been replaced, and the new flooring for the junior room, hallway and bathroom has been selected along with paintcolors. We will also be upgrading some items while we are at it (might as well kill two birds with one stone). Our staffhas done a wonderful job dealing with the inconvenience of having a major construction job going on while trying to runa yacht club.

I can go on for hours explaining all the events going on at ABYC, but it is better that you keep a keen eye on theweekly reader, online calendar, or just come on down to to see for yourself…there is plenty!

Remember ABYC is THE place to BE…Cheers,Chuck Clay

Easter, CISA and Spring spruce-up! What a great month for the members of ABYC! The Easter Brunch went off with out a hitch even though we were working out of a refrigeration truck. Chef Rick managed the movement and storage of the stores like a

true sailor on a long distance cruise. With the help of all our staff the food was fantastic! TheSocial Advisory committee did a stellar job with decorations and setting up for the over 300members and guests who came to enjoy the family friendly atmosphere of our little slice ofparadise. Well done all!

CISA arrived the following Wednesday in full force! 200 young sailors and their respectivehigh performance dinghies settled into the club on Thursday and began an intensive 4 days oftraining and fun. The weather in Long Beach did not disappoint the sailors or coaches delivering

10 to 18 knots of breeze each day. Once again the staff managed to serve dinners and lunches without having our facilitycompletely up to Bristol shape. According to all of the participants I spoke to, it was a great week!

What a turn out at Spring Spruce-up! Polishing, painting, digging, brick laying, lighting, rack maintenance andbuilding, painting the bottom of seven of the whalers, as well as a new burgee on the ramp! Members of all ages arrivedboth Saturday and Sunday and put in a ton of volunteer hours to get our club ready for the spring season and summer.Thank you to all of our members who came down and showed the volunteer sprit that Alamitos Bay Yacht Club wasfounded on and needs from it’s members to keep the club an affordable venue to be part of. If you did not make it down, itis not too late to make your $50 donation towards the materials, which were used by your fellow members to make yourclub look spic and span! Hopefully those of you that couldn’t make it this year will next year, it takes a lot of work to keep theclub going.

As our busy season starts just some reminders: Please pick up your trash and equipment in the yard and aroundthe club. Given the current water situation do your part in saving water by using as little water as you can and turning off thehoses. Remember, if you have a guest at the club you must be with them.

Have a great spring!Latham Bell

EASTER CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH Sunday April 5th

The SAC volunteers and ABYC Staff set the upstairs in a beautiful variety of EasterSeason decorations and helped Chef Rick prepare a lovely and bountiful buffet. The DaveSchack and Lynda Peoples families set out the eggs for the Easter Egg hunt. Several ABYCJuniors were on hand to assist with serving. Kathy Robinson and Tori were everywhere seeingto any last minute issues. As this was my first ABYC Easter Brunch, I thought we had a goodcrowd and was impressed with every aspect of a very nice day.SPRING SPRUCE-UPSaturday and Sunday April 18th & 19th

There was enough coffee, O.J., yogurt, fruit, doughnuts and other snacks on hand to feed everyone who showedup and more. Thankfully it was there to energize the members who were already hard at work when I arrived just before9:00 a.m. There were sign-up sheets for the various projects and a table with all the supplies necessary to get started.

Though having to concentrate on the Laser rack project, I did have occasion to see a few of the other projects inprocess; weeding and trimming the landscape, polishing and organizing the trophies & trophy case, organizing the RaceManagement container, painting the scoring tower, cleaning and repainting the bottoms of the whalers, painting sawhorsesfor the Jr. Program CFJ’s, painting the numeral placards for the Bay Barge and Patience, and the huge job of removinggrass sod and laying down concrete pavers to create a new patio area on the east side of the clubhouse…whew!

Mike Kramer, Jorge Suarez and I took on the job of completing the spar storage tubes for the new Laser rack in thewest yard. Jennifer Kuritz arranged to purchase and have delivered all the necessary supplies in time for work to commence.Latham Bell provided a nicely constructed template to secure and cut the large plastic pipes used to store and secure thespars. Despite a broken router bit and delay getting a replacement, all 40 pipes were prepared with correct slots, cut tolength and delivered to the rack by the end of the day. Jorge, Dave Crockett and I did the final installation on Sundaymorning with heavy duty zip-ties provided by Doug Jorgensen. Doug is also supplying the aluminum anodized pins whichallow owners to lock away their spars. The pins will be delivered and attached in the coming days or weeks. Thank youDoug, Jennifer, Latham, Mike, Dave and Jorge.

The clubhouse and grounds seem to be improving every week with one project or another ongoing. Even thewater leak detailed in the last Sou’Wester will allow us to improve the function of the areas that were damaged. Tori and thestaff are busy and as I left the club midday on Sunday, the guys were on a mechanical lift, trimming the ficus trees on thesouth wall. We will look good for Opening Day.

We had another very successful Spring Spruce Up the weekend

of April 18th & 19th. I believe wehad upwards of 60 happy clubmembers come down and pitch ahand on a variety of projects. Theweather was perfect. Everyoneworked hard and enjoyed a great

lunch spread sponsored by the club. I’m sure all the otherofficers have mentioned Spring Spruce Up in their articles, highlighting the projects near and dear to them. And I’mgoing to do the same. Would you be surprised to learn thatI am going to talk about Whaler Luv 2? Led by StaffCommodores Chuck Hardin AND Dave Crockett Sr., a crewof hearty sailors prepared and painted the bottoms of seven whalers. I joined in the fun for the last few boats. Everyoneworked really hard and I feel like I should probably mention the volunteers by names. Unfortunately by the time I arrivedeveryone was covered in black bottom paint or dust from sanding. In addition, club lawyers have asked me to redact thenames of the volunteers in case anyone ever files a black lung claim.

We also managed to share some of our Luv with Patience and the Bay Barge. Both boats had the course holdersremoved and repainted (yes we will put them back). Patience also received a new coat of varnish on the rails, while the baybarge had the deck repainted. Cindy Heavrin donated new anchor chain and rode to the Bay Barge. Apparently she hassome kind of rust phobia. All kidding aside please remember to thank Cindy next time you race in the bay. I want personallythank everyone that donated their time, materials and sometimes money to this event! There were so many of you that Iwon’t list everyone here. You know who you are.

I want to wrap up this column by letting everyone know that there will be a change in the way we store and launchwhalers for regattas. This past week the Board of Directors decided to pilot a change that will hopefully save the clubmoney by reducing maintenance costs. In short, most of the whalers will begin living out of the water between regattas.Only the whalers used by the Junior program and for twilight fleet races will stay in the water through the summer. This newprogram will be tested during the Memorial Day Regatta. We hope to get a lot of feedback after the regatta (both good andbad is welcome). The exact details of how this process will work are still being planned. Stay tuned for more information.

The CISA Advanced Racing Clinic at ABYC was an amazing learning experience. Over the course of four days, Ireceived some of the best coaching from Ryan Minth, Claire Dennis and Sean Kelley. These coaches dedicatedmany hours to improve our Laser Radial sailing skills. I also learned how to manage a campaign and how to build a

successful training program. The first day of the clinic was focused on boat handling. With nearly one on one coaching, Iwas able to learn new boat handling techniques. I also fixed some of my bad habits. Day two was focused on boat speed. In the morning, we watched videos and had a lecture on how to maximize our speed sailing both upwind and downwind.Upwind, I learned how to sail properly sail high mode, without going slow. On the water, we did drills that fixated on our boatspeed. Days three and four were about tactics and managing the race course. The other aspect of the CISA clinic ismeeting new people. I, with the help of my mother, housed three Laser sailors. Over the course of the four days, webecame pretty close. Within the radial fleet, I met people from across the nation, and even one from out of the country. Iwill see many of these people again this summer in Kingston, Ontario for the Laser Youth Worlds. The CISA clinic helpedme improve my sailing skills, and allowed me to meet many new sailors.

The junior board hosted a fabulous General Meeting on April 17. Sam Bell presented his wonderful program about hisfamily’s adventures over the past 50 years on their Lapworth 52 Westward, including the 2013 and this year’sTranspac Races. Chef Rick prepared a delicious Italian dinner. We are so glad that Rick is back. The juniors

collected a total of $436 for the 50/50 opportunity drawing, with winner Charlie Crockett donating back to the juniors all but$100 of his winnings. Thank you Mr. Crockett! We sold all but two of our Sea Bags of Maine recycled sail bags so we needyour old sails to make new bags. For the first time the juniors tried a Junior Time auction, auctioning off the time of someof our junior board members. We originally intended the time to be sailing related, but we had some creative purchasers.Kathy Robinson and Sue McDannel purchased the time of junior commodore Beth Golison to sing at ABYC’s Mother’s Daybrunch on May 10. Brad and Sharon Bolger purchased the time of Taylor Milefchik for pet sitting. Alan Peoples, RyanSchack and Hailey Thompson’s time will be spent crewing on big and little boats. Jim and Lori Thompson generouslypurchased the time of six juniors to go sailing on their J109! in total, the juniors made $1,850 for the junior fund. Thank youto everyone that helped make the evening a success.

10% of the lawn creating a new patio area that is protected from the wind. Many thanks to Teri for the great idea creating “Lover’s Cove”, I thinkwe’ll all enjoy it for many years to come.

There was a small army of members working on bottom paint forthe whaler fleet. Under the expert guidance of Staff Commodores ChuckHardin and Dave Crockett, all the whaler bottoms were sanded andrepainted on Saturday. This was a difficult task as several of the boatshad been in the water for too long with significant growth on the bottom.(Chuck and Dave have come to the BOD with recommendations aboutthis bottom growth problem, so look for more to come on this issue.)There were 10 members working all day on the whalers! The groupbecame very efficient completing the last boat in 35 minutes.

Directors Jeff McDermaid and Jan Carpenter led the project ofre-carpeting the Sabot Racks. We counted 75 racks that were refurbished.

Dan DeLave andChuck Tripp providedtheir expertise andpatience with the project. We had ordered parts on-line that did not arrivein the mail until around noon and we ran out of carpeting (whichnecessitated another trip tothe hardware store to buymore carpet). However, theyhung in all day andcompleted the project! Theend results look great.

Director CindyHeavrin headed the projectto paint and refurbish sawhorses. I think you’ll noticethat the junior boats nowhave matching saw horsesthat are now in compliancewith the yard rules andproudly displaying ourburgee.

Carol Kofahl had a big group of volunteers cleaning and polishingour trophies! We have over 90 perpetual trophies and this annual cleaningtakes a lot of elbow grease. SAC also cleaned out the attic storage area andre-organized our party decorations so we’re ready for another season.

Our Co-Port Captain Dave Schack and Steve Bloemeke cleaned andorganized the Race Management Container. All ourequipment and whaler boxes are ready for our busyracing season.

There are a few surprises to see next timeyou’re down at the club. Martyn Bookwalter paintedthe club burgee onto the launching ramp. Check outthe new staghorn fern hung on the north corner of thequarter-deck. Ed Spotskey has been working on alight sculpture on the widow’s walk. And, JonRobinson has been working on permanent lightingover the patio.

Thank you to everyone who gave up theirweekend to help with the Spruce Up projects. And,thank you to those who donated money! The club is inship shape for Opening Day festivities.

It was a beautiful day for an Easter Brunch at ABYC the Place to Be! Our own Sheila and Jenny greeted our families and each child was given a bag of Jelly Beans, courtesy of Lynda Peoples. Once upstairs our own Staff Commodore

Jon Robinson, who assumed maître d’ duties, made sure everyone found theappropriate table. Each table was adorned with napkins shaped into bunny ears.

The centers of the tables were decorated withgrass, colorful eggs and a very tall bunny. Those who wished to have liquid refreshmentsbefore brunch were directed to the bar whereTim Carter and Steve Smith treated them tomimosas. For the more daring, Gin Fizzes(which I heard were delicious) or other morningcocktails were served by Kelly Rose and ToriKasic, our new club manager. Chef Rick is backand he out did himself with his beautiful displayof food and I might add it was not only pleasingto the eye, but to the taste buds as well. Thisbuffet was served by our wonderful juniors:Alan and Brett Peoples, Ryan and Sean Ayale,Ryan Schack and Julia Jaynes.

After brunch there wasexcitement in the air for all the young children. They were dressed in theirSunday best waiting anxiously for that moment when Peter Cottontail would

make his appearance. And then… in hecame, with Cindy Heavin escorting him up thestairs, playing music so everyone knew ITWAS TIME! The kids leaped to their feet tofollow the bunny downstairs, have their picturetaken with the famous bunny and receive aspecial bag of goodies.

Then before long it was time for theEaster egg hunt! Thanks again to our juniorsfor doing such a wonderful job of hiding theeggs. The little ones crawled or walked witha little help from mom or dad, searchingamong the colored eggs for the goldenegg that meant they had won the big

prize. I heard Dana and Sam Bell’s granddaughter won the prize forthe youngest egg hunters—a stuffed bunny. The older kids ran aroundas quickly as possible filling up their baskets, hoping to win the kite orthe paddle ball game that was their golden egg booty. After it was allover many of the kids were seen playing with their new Easter Frisbeesand eating their treats.

Thank you to all the people who helped to make this such aspecial and memorable event!

Saturday, June 6: • ABYC breakfast including our world famous breakfast burritos • Final registration, competitors meeting, and of course sailing in beautiful Alamitos Bay! • Post race micro brewery keg at the dinghy dock (no thirst will go unquenched) • Saturday evening cocktails, Italian style dinner, and Grand Master awards ceremony

We want you! We will be setting up focal points from our So. Cal. Yacht clubs including SDYC, MBYC, BYC, and NHYC to organize yacht club trailer transportation from your home club to ABYC. Our goal is to fully load our club trailers. Additionally, we are mounting a campaign to recruit the local ABYCers who grew up on Sabots to join the action. More people = more fun! Please join us at this annual Sabot homecoming to see old and new friends. For additional information, please contact regatta chair Todd Smith at [email protected] or call at (562) 438-2940. You can look forward to future email blasts with updates (NOR, on line registration info., etc.).
