sin2213 ~ 0.095 ± 0.011 is no longer ‘unknown’

Next: sensitivity to Mass Hierarchy MH(and to CP Violation (CPV)

Discussion will come up ‘what is the next step’?

-- T2K + NOvA + reactors will not get 3 nor 5 sigma on MH or CPV

-- systematic errors will be important

Next steps

1.T2HK@ 295km is very good for CPV status: LOI plans: unknown need 1.6MW and 500kton

2. DUSEL in present state (new 2MW beam + 34kton Larg@ DUSEL mine) has been ‘rejected’ – need to come back with more affordable plan 3. LAGUNA-LBNO in progress -- best for MH (see my slides last time) -- LOI being prepared.

4. Short baseline being studied at CERN and at FNAL In particular muon storage ring for precision cross section measurements.

For far detector in LAGUNA: Magnetized iron detector and muon catcher for fine grain detectorNear detector for LAGUNA Fine grained detector= Plastic (or liquid?) scintillator followed by mag ironOr limited volume LARG of GARG TPC

In all cases need magnetized iron and in some cases a large cvolume of TASDHadron shower resolution in plastic scintillator?

CP asymmetry decreases as sin2213 increases… Systematics!Systematics!

Challenge of precision! Flux and cross-sections must be known to <<5%

hadro production experiments (NA61@CERN) + near detectors cross-sections to 5%

• if needed to measure cross-sections to 1% precision mini neutrino factory (first step muon storage ring)

-- Stopping properties of pions and muons in Minerva detector This will be studied in the MICE EMR at RAL using stopping e/mu/pi of both signs in May 2012 MICE BEAM

-- Charge separation for electrons in Minerva – like detector (with lower density?) in magnetic field This can be studied in the MORPURGO magnet at CERN beam requirement : electron beam from 0.5-5 GeV (perhaps 10 GeV)

-- Charge separation in MIND-like detector This can be studied in a baby-MIND detector at CERN beam requirement : muons from 0.8 – 2 GeV (perhaps 10 GeV?)

-- hadronic shower angular and transverse momentum resolution in TASD and MIND or LArg (tau detection in superbeam or high energy neutrino factory) this requires about 2m deep MIND (that is CDHS shower box) and 5m deep (?) TASD or LArg (!) in hadron test beam e.g. at CERN or Fermilab How many interaction lengths are needed? beam requirement protons pions of 0.5 to 10 GeV.

Beam Requirements -- Physics issues:

Work to do:

1- make a test beam study plan, beam request, write it up and submit to coordinator

2- simulations of test beam set-up for non-magnetized TASD and MIND

3- simulation and study of large size detector -- MIND for CC and NC disappearance -- TASD for nu_e appearance and MH -- near detector

4- organize construction work

-- mechanics-- electronics-- DAQ-- detector tests --..-..-
