    SAREX Held February 2010

Overall the wide-area exercise this pastweekend went really well. There were 110members involved with the 3 day exercise,we used 13 different aircraft, flew 100.3hours, and expended over 1,000 man hoursof effort. Well done! It should be noted that

only 224.9 hours were flown on all of lastYear's exercises. Also, ZERO of those100.3 hours were flown on ferry sorties tomission base to receive a tasking and/or tofly home from mission base.

Alabama Wing was able to respond to twodifferent state-wide scenarios. The first was

the simulated storm system that camethrough the state spawning tornadoes andcausing wide area flooding. ALWG aircrewsflew missions to survey bridges, dams, power plants, and other infrastructurealong the Tennessee and Coosa Rivers.

Missions were flown along sections of I-65,I-59, and US231 to monitor evacuationroute traffic flow and spot strandedmotorists. Airborne Digital Imaging Systemsorties were launched to document thedamage status of designated evacuationcenters and aircrews and ground teamslocated multiple emergency [practice]beacons in different parts of the state thatwere activated by the inclement weather.

In addition to the disaster relief sorties,

there was also a (simulated) overdueaircraft for which ALWG aircrews flewsearch sorties. The blue & white Cessna172 departed Muscle Shoals Thursdayevening bound for Crestview, Florida via theMuscle Shoals, Vulcan, and MontgomeryVOR's. Many grids were searched alongthe route of flight as well as other, moreintensive, creeping line searches at otherpoints of interest. Many crews reportedseeing what could have been wreckage andrecorded the coordinates of each sighting

which were excellent clues. Severalrelocation sorties were conducted as well, demonstrating the wing's ability to transportpersonnel and equipment to various parts ofthe state where they were needed.

The Civil Air Patrol Is WatchingOut For You

Saturday, February 27, 2010, the AlabamaWing of the Civil Air Patrol conducted astatewide Search and Rescue Exercise(SAREX) with the Redstone Composite andHuntsville CAP Squadrons participatingfrom their Madison County Executive Airportmission base. During the SAREX acommercial airline flying over Huntsvillereported to Huntsville Air Traffic Control(ATC) that they were picking up a signalfrom an Emergency Locator Transmitter(ELT). Huntsville ATC then requested

assistance from CAP to determine thelocation of the ELT.

A CAP aircrew from Huntsville was flyingtheir aircraft in a practice area of theSAREX when they were tasked by WingMission Base to determine the location ofthe ELT. Three personnel make an aircrewin a CAP aircraft, and this time thosemembers were pilot Captain Ian Johnston,Mission Observer, 2Lt. Joel Mason andMission Scanner 2Lt. Dave Reynolds.

The Mission Observer, the aircrew boss, sits in the right seat of the aircraft and usesdirection finding equipment to direct the pilotto the source of the distress signal. TheCAP pilot responds to the Mission Observerby executing tactical maneuvers to alignantennas on the aircraft with the signalemanating from the ELT. In this case, the

CAP aircrew determined that the location ofthe ELT was Moontown airport. Whilecircling overhead, Capt. Johnston contactedthe FBO Unicom to inform them of anemitting ELT at their location. TheMoontown FBO acknowledged the message

from Johnston and soon the ELT was silent.

Mason, the Mission Observer on this flight, was pleased that his crew was already inthe air on a training mission which madethem immediately available to assist whenthe real thing came along. In this case, fortunately it was a false alarm.

    CISM introduces EmotionalControl

Handling our emotions is vital to being fit to

serve. If we let ourselves becomeoverwhelmed by our emotions then we areliable to commit life threatening errors.Certainly the inability to effectively controlour feelings can lead to illness, fatigue andstress, which can not only affect our jobsbut also our families and indeed all of ourrelationships.

The emotions we feel are all part of beinghuman, and are valid based on thecircumstances. Emotions become aproblem when we hurt ourselves, hurtsomeone else, or break stuff we dont own.For example, if you are going through adivorce and are feeling depressed, well thenthat would be an appropriate emotionalresponse. However, if due to yourdepression, you cannot leave the house orget out of bed, you are likely to lose your

job. Of course depression can runcompletely out of control and result insuicidal feelings as well. Perhaps anger isan issue. Maybe you are one of thosepeople who get really angry in a traffic jam.You are late for work and there you arestuck in traffic on I-20 heading intoBirmingham. You pound the steering wheel, your blood pressure goes up and the nextthing you know you are out of your carscreaming at the person in front of you.Road rage can defiantly result in someonegetting hurt.

April 24-25, LtCol Pete Norris, the SER ESOfficer, will be conducting ICS400 inBirmingham. To register for this course, please go to the ALWG website athttp://www.alwg.cap.gov, login, then go tothe Training page of the Ops & EmergencyServices section.

It is required to be an Incident Commanderor Liasion Officer and recommended forPIO, Air or Operations Branch Director,Finance or Logistics Chief.

April 2010 Citizen Serving Communities: Above and Beyond 10

The key to controlling emotions is to betterunderstand how you experience emotions.Do you anger quickly, are you prone tosadness or self destructive behavior. Behonest with yourself. All emotions are okay,so long as you dont hurt yourself, hurt

someone else, or break stuff. Ive said thattwice now, so it must be important. Mostnegative emotions are the result of feelingout of control. Rational Emotive BehaviorTherapy has given us a model to examinethis. A + B = C is very simple and looks likethis. A is an activating event, B is our beliefabout that event which leads to C theemotional consequences we experiencebecause of our beliefs. Looking at theformula we see that an activating event issomething that happens, which usually we

cannot control, such as a traffic jam. Ourbelief or self talk about that event leads toour emotions. So, if we are telling ourselvesthat this traffic jam is going to cost us our

job, and then we will lose our family, andour house and the world will come to anend, then we are going to be pretty mad. Therefore, the secret to controlling ouremotional consequences lies with the abilityto control our self talk. As pilots we train todo this in critical situations such as enginefailures or when the landing gear wont

come down. If we let ourselves panic thenall may be lost. So we talk to ourselves andtell ourselves to remain calm and fly theairplane. The same holds true in everydaysituations. What you tell yourself about anevent will dictate the emotions you feel. Thenext time you are in a traffic jam, try tellingyourself you cannot control the event, askyourself what do I need to do, whom shouldI communicate with and remember to drivethe car. Playing some calming music anddrinking water wont hurt either.

Self talk, should never be confused withschizophrenia, it is a positive way to keepour emotions in check. Sometimes all ittakes is a reminder that the world is notcoming to an end, to bring an event into theproper perspective. Always remember thatall of our emotions are valid and healthy, solong as we dont hurt ourselves, hurt

someone else, or break stuff. There you gothree times in one article.

Please stay safe and emotionally healthy.

    Jon Garlick, Capt. CAP

    ALWG CISO

    THE RF FACTOR

For the Communications Team I want to saythanks to everyone who attended thecommunications breakout sessions at WingConference. I also thank everyone for all thework that has gone into the communicationsprogram this past year. Here's a little look at

    what's going on.
