A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DR. REGINALD SYKES
July 1, 2013
Dear Friends and Supporters of the Alabama Southern Library System:
I would like to thank each of you who took the time and effort in
submitting poetry to this Anthology. Additionally, I would like to
thank you for supporting this effort by picking up a copy of this year’s
publication. Alabama Southern Community College has been
fortunate to have such talent encompassed in this book of creative
thoughts and rhymes!
The fifth edition features works from the best and brightest from
elementary, middle, high school, and Alabama Southern Community
College students, as well as members of the communities served by
ASCC. The talent that emerges for our Anthology each year has been
astounding!
This effort is an excellent collaborative venture between the Alabama
Southern Library System and the Alabama Southern community.
Thank you again for your support of our institution and our libraries!
We hope that you enjoy this unique collection and we would like to
encourage you to begin working on your own poetry submission for
next year’s collection!
Regards,
Reginald L. Sykes

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT HONORING
JIMMIEROSE BRYANT JOAN OWENS
RICHARD MARTINDALE
WRITTEN BY . . Deborah Rankins
J ust Wait One Cotton-pickin Minute! Stunning words, right. Well, these words are the title to one of the 35 poems
published in the first volume of poetry five years ago. That 2009 pivotal year set into motion an Alabama Southern Community College Library System poetry tradition that has evolved into its volume five. This edition boasts over 200 poems from submitters of all ages from all over southwest Alabama.
The evolution of this publication is truly a marvelous tradition that has progressed because of dedicated people from both the college and the community. As a result there are three who have demonstrated unwavering dedication to the Anthology of Poems since its onset in 2009 through today. Because of their unwavering commitment, we are going to break our tradition of dedicating this publication to one person. This year, we are honoring three equally vibrant and expressive individuals who have graciously given their time, talents, and voice to celebrate poetry and the Anthology of Poems. One is a radio personality/retired educator, another is a writer/folk artist, and the third is a preacher/retired educator—they all share a common thread which has been woven into beautiful poetry since their coming together in 2009 for the first Anthology of Poems celebration on the Thomasville campus. Therefore, it seems fitting to dedicate the Alabama Southern Community College Library System 2013 Anthology of Poems to JimmieRose Bryant, Joan Owens, and Richard Martindale.
5
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
HONORING . . .JimmieRose Bryant
Meet our first honoree, JimmieRose Bryant. Since 2009, this
radio talk show host of The Rose Garden Radio Show has been encouraging her listeners to submit poems to the Anthology of Poems and to attend its annual celebration of National Poetry Month at Alabama Southern. Today, this retired assistant principal of Thomas-ville High School continues to promote the Anthology of Poems on her popular radio show and has never missed any of the poetry celebrations.
6
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
HONORING . . . Joan Owens
When Joan Owens, our second honoree, stood boldly before
the podium in 2009, she caused a stir of excitement with her poem, Just Wait One Cotton Pickin Minute. Joan recited in an old-timey fashion that set the audience afire with laughter. Since that poetic debut, she has recited it on JimmieRose’s radio show, at churches and at other community events. Joan is the only Anthology of Poems sub-mitter who has had a poem published in every edition. Additionally, Joan has never missed a poetry celebration. Oftentimes, Joan draws an image to accompany her poems, which is sometimes seasoned with a taste of southern fried folklore and humor.
7
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
HONORING . . . Richard Martidale
Richard Martindale, our third honoree, birth an Anthology
of Poems tradition, humor. Without a doubt, he keeps a story or two in his pocket for anyone willing and unwilling to listen. His light-hearted personality and storytelling wit made for the perfect evening back in 2009 when he served as the first master of ceremonies for the Anthology of Poems on the Thomasville campus. Richard serves as the pastor at a Pine Hill church and at one time served as a Chap-lin in the U.S. Navy. Even though he recently retired from teaching at Alabama Southern, he did not retire his commitment to the Anthology of Poems. The Alabama Southern Community College Library System is earnestly grateful to the 2013 honorees.

FOREWARD AGATHA GRANT
ENGLISH TEACHER, CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL AND UPWARD BOUND INSTRUCTOR,
ALABAMA SOUTHERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Many say “actions speak louder than words,“ but I’m not so
sure that the poets in this anthology would agree. In fact,
poetry is and always will be one of our most ultimate forms of
expressions. Through words full of creativity, thought, and
emotion, these poets have managed to paint a vivid picture of
who they are, their likes and dislikes; what they stand for, their
morals and values; and what they one day wish to become,
their dreams and aspirations. Through poetry, they allow us to
enter into the inner circle of their hearts and minds. For many
of us poetry is indeed food for the soul, and the various ingredi-
ents of creativity and imagination combined by these “master
chefs” make the recipe of a page turner. These poets vary in
age, background, and experience, but the one thing that they
do all have in common is talent. It is with great honor that I
congratulate them, many of whom I have had the pleasure of
teaching, on their debut.

HOW I LEARNED TO RIDE MY BIKE JAVIER SMITH
JOHN ESSEX HIGH SCHOOL
I learned to ride my bike when I was five.
M my dad and I went to the park.
At first I was afraid, I did not want to fall, my dad did not let me
fall.
Finally, I rode all by myself that was a great day I was so happy.
25
CATS AND THE RATS JHYLIAN MCCALL
JOHN ESSEX HIGH SCHOOL
Cats eat rats
Dog sleep like a log
On the ground cats run and rats run with rats
A cat is just like a cat in the hat
The rats are afraid of the dogs
If a cat in the hat got a bat and hit the ball.
He will run to the first mat the cats will chat about the mat and
the rat.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE CESRIC EZELL
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I want to be somebody
That people will remember later on.
The good way to live life
I will have shown.
I want to make a difference.
I want to show little kids and teens
That it is cool not to smoke.
They don’t have to put their lives on the line,
Because it is a big joke.
I want to make a difference.
I want to encourage young girls
And let them know that they are on standards above;
That they don’t have to give up their bodies to anyone
Just so they can be loved.
I want to make a difference.
I will be a man, and a good man,
That people look up to,
Someone who is responsible and respectful
And doesn’t mind helping others too.
I will make a difference.
30
HUNTING BAILEY NEWTON
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
During hunting season, I hunt deer and ducks.
I really enjoy killing big bucks.
Sitting in the water hearing that wood duck squeal,
Brings peace and serenity from Grove Hill.
My papa worked hard for the place I hunt,
I don’t lose my privileges by doing stupid stunts.
Sometimes hunting isn’t always about the kill,
The beauty of the woods is like a chill pill.
It takes a lot of work to be a good hunter,
Which means a lot of work takes place in the summer.
The wind in the trees is the only sound,
Besides the crunching leaves as I walk on the ground.
I set my alarm to wake me at dawn.
As 4:30 comes I wake up and yawn.
Hunting is a sport that is very fun;
All I need is my camo and my gun.
31
THEY TELL ME TO BE BREELYN GARRICK
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a cake, exciting and made with flour.
I tell them I am a lemon, delighting and sour.
They tell me to be a peacock, entertaining and bright.
I tell them I am a mouse, sneaking and without flight.
They tell me to be a flower, shining with beauty and color.
I tell them I am a sprout, growing and small.
They tell me to be a river, flowing and loud.
I tell them I am a pond, lying still and dark.
They tell me to be a plane, soaring high in the sky.
I tell them I am a car, staying on the ground.
32
FISHING BRITTON BARNES
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
A day on the lake,
With a rod and reel.
When a bass hits, you know the feel.
As I get the big one in the boat,
The feeling is surreal.
I push the boat off,
And then head to my secret spot.
I flip my lure, oh so soft.
They will be lucky if they don’t get caught.
When I finish there, it’s off to another spot.
The fun is over,
And cleaning time is here.
I keep in mind that tomorrow is near,
So I wait until the sun’s first ray.
Tomorrow is a new fishing day.
33
THEY TELL ME TO BE BRYCE CARLISLE
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL

They tell me to be a piece of toast, warming and yummy

They tell me to be a pencil, writing on paper as smooth as silk
I tell them I am a locker, always locking people out
They tell me to be an apple, ripening everyday
I tell them I am a leaf, dying everyday
They tell me to be a boat, gliding across the water
I tell them I am a bus, transporting people everyday
34
THEY TELL ME TO BE CALEB WITHERSPOON
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a lion, grateful and courageous.

They tell me to be grass, calm and waving slightly.
I tell them I am a pumpkin, wide and orange.
They tell me to be a bus, big and tall.
I tell them I am a car, moving every single minute of the day.
They tell me to be a pencil, always working.
I tell them I am a bottle of glue, sticking to everything.
They tell me to be a pizza, delicious and hot.
I tell them I am a bowl of ice cream, chilling and scrumptious.
35
THEY TELL ME TO BE CALLEE MEGGINSON
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be calm like a pond,
I tell them that I’m a cat that screams when it touches water.
They tell me to keep my claws in, I try, but they won’t stay,
They tell me to be a flower, to run away when the wind blows all
of the problems.
I tell them I’m a tree that stands up for myself.
They tell me to be an eraser, to erase all of the unnecessary
drawings,
I tell them that I’m a pencil that draws them back.
They tell me to be the blank piece of paper so they can draw on
their ideas,
I tell them that I’m the glue so I can stick to the ideas I want to
have.
36
THE YARD CLARISSA PATRICK
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I walk through the yard,
seeing the glistening leaves
fall to the lime green grass.
I run across the fog grey rocks
and I notice the pealing
bark from the tree. I touch
the sky-blue pond and
rippled waves spread through
the pond. I hear the silent
scream through the branches
and the whistle of the birds
in the open air.
The silence of nature
is soothing in my ears.
37
THEY TELL ME TO BE COLE FERGUSON
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a seed, growing bigger
I tell them I am a tree, standing tall and strong
They tell me to be a piece of paper, lying on the floor
But I tell them I am a pair of scissors, cutting the paper
They tell me to be a kid, having fun
But I tell them I am a man, being dull
They tell me to be a dog, lying and sleeping
But I tell them I am a beast, hunting my pray
They tell me to be an ocean, hitting the shore
I tell them I am stream, running along
38
COLD BETHANY MOZINGO
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
You live in a world,
A cold world.
This world is like
Living alone all the time.
Fighting for yourself,
And yourself only.
You have no one there
To help you through life.
Building walls around yourself,
To keep people out.
To keep people
From hurting you.
It has to be like this.
It needs to be like this.
Where you can
Keep your sanity.
In this world,
Your friends are your enemies.
In this world,
You have no family.
39
COLD
(Cont. from Page 38)
Deep, deep down inside
You wish it was different.
But on the outside you show
That it’s perfect this way.
When there is war,
You hide.
Even when there is peace,
You still hide.
You have everything to hide,
And nothing to show.
You stay locked away
In a shell you call a body.
When your cold life ends,
Whenever that time comes,
No one will forget you
Because no one ever knew you.
This is sad,
And I know this.
But it’s the truth,
And it’s the cold truth.

LOVE CADADRA HUNT
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Love
What is love?
What could it possibly be?
Is it the tingle you get when you hear their name?
Could it be the butterflies you get in your stomach?
Or is it the redness that fills your cheeks?
Is it the way they hug you so tight?
Or the sweet words they whisper to you?
Is it the way your heart rate increases in their presence?
Could it be the serenity that rushes over your entire body?
Or is it the giggles that suddenly take over you?
Can you see it?
Can you feel it?
What is love?

BABIES! CORNELIUS COATES
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Babies are pretty.
Babies are small.
Babies are cute cuddly and all,
But they cry all the time.
You didn’t know they committed a crime.
They’ll get you in trouble with such a thought.
Make parents teach lessons they already taught.
The worst thing is they never get caught.
Don’t worry about it, it’s not your fault.
Babies are suppose to be harmless,
But that’s not true.
Babies will give you the blues.
Parents will never have a clue
What a baby might do
Or what a baby might do to you.
44
I AM MORE DEMETRIUS HICKERSON
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I am more than a remnant of a tattered legacy.
More than a dream denied.
I am more than your grim expectations.
I live for more than to say I’m alive.
I am more than a black kid.
I’m much more than my race.
More than what you think of me
When you see my face.
I am Demetrius.
I am somebody.
I’m a face with a name.
I am more than a claim to fame.
I am the manifestation of pride’s power.
I am more than the man of the hour.
I am the now and I am the will be.
More than what eyes allow you to believe.
I am a child of hope.
Positivity my spirit evokes.
45
I AM MORE
(Cont. from page 44)
I am more than a doubter’s muse.
I am the spark that ignites the fuse.
I am the music.
My joy sings inside me.
While my soul dances beside me.
From the assailants my heart hides me.
I am now saved.
Saved from sin.
Saved from social tyranny.
Saved from fearing.
Saved from fearing me.
I am more than a racist’s aim.
I am a passionately artistic entity
That refuses to be tamed.
I am more than the 6 letter word
That for 400+ years kept us oppressed.
I am a hero in my own life.
I need no S for my chest.
46
I AM MORE (Cont. from page 45)
I am more than a prison cell reserved.
I am not a convict.
My God is love infinity.
No start and no stopping.
More than a bad test score.
I am room for improvement.
I am more than the influence of modern media.
TV aspires to leave us foolish.
I am not high.
I’m sober levitation.
I am the cotillion.
More than the prestigious invitation.
I am more than Hip Hop.
I am more than that.
More than a kid.
And more than Black.

POETRY DUSTIN HUGGINS
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I know poems are supposed to rhyme,
But who really has the time
To sit in class all day
And think of things to say?
Poems, to me, are hard to write.
They have me thinking all night.
I always struggle really bad,
And usually fail making me quite mad!
There are poets here and there;
There seem to be poets everywhere.
I wasn’t fortunate enough to acquire that skill.
Even the shortest poem gives me my fill.
I am tired of writing and rhyming
As you can tell,
I guess this poem actually ended well.

FAMILY SHANNON MERIDA
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Living life and having fun
Enjoying time in the sun
Sipping tea and making way
For me to eat some ribs today
Daddy busy on the grill
Me and my family oh so chill
Being with the ones you love
Is something the world needs more of
Mother, Father, Sister, Brother
Should always be there for each other
If every family shared a space
The world would be a better place
A place where both you and me
Can live a life of love and peace
Having them there is probably
The best thing you can have, Family

FOOTBALL FRANK GAMBLE
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
The gridiron is where I want to be.
That’s all I dream of when I’m sleep.
Pigskin, touchdown, field goal.
Winning the game that’s my goal.
Up by seven at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The crowd cheered as we scored another.
Minutes by minutes we get closer to the game.
After tonight the game won’t be the same.
Some heads held high, some held low
We won as the crowd show.
Cheers and claps here and there.
Confetti raining everywhere.
Grove Hill Bulldogs announced the champs
Tired with pain and vicious cramps.
We held our head high because we are the champs.

THEY TELL ME TO BE A… GABRIELA WATTS
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a dog, loyal and compassionate.
I tell them I’m a horse, ready to run away when I can.
They tell me to be a beach, calm and quiet.
I tell them I’m a car, loud and proud.
They tell me to be a school, ready to learn.
I tell them I’m crayons, wanting to stand out. They tell me to be
a rose, free as can be.
I tell them I’m poison ivy, ready for the itching to start.
They tell me to be a cat, not too fat.
I tell them I’m a pig, round and big.
They tell me to be a star, ready to shine.
I tell them I’m me and that’s just fine!

GUESS WHO ANIYA WELCH
CLARK COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
She is light brown
and loves to drive down town
and hair of black and brown.
She is not fast
But, a tad bad
And likes to talk very fast.
She is almost tall
Loves to go to the mall
And loves to make phone calls.
She has manners
So when she sneezes
She doesn’t make people pleased.
Most importantly,
She loves God and her phone
Which has a big loud tone.
She is a one and only,
Her name rhymes with Jamiyah
So guess what her name is Aniya.

SPRING TIME JAMIE CREIGHTON
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Pollen here, pollen there
Pollen flying everywhere
A yellow coat on my car
A yellow layer on the tar
It must be Spring time.
Days get longer
Nights get shorter
Spring break in mind
Fun like no other kind
It must be Spring time.
The next month is summer.
The wait is a bummer.
The school year is coming to an end.
Soon it will be no more class to attend.
It must be Spring time.

THEY TELL ME TO BE … JASON DONG
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a lion, my bite really stings,
I tell them I am a dragon, fierce, deadly and big.
Or I could be scissors, my sharp edges cutting and trimming,
I can’t decide between a jet and a plane because they are so
alike.
I could always be a pizza, tasty, cheesy, and piping hot,
I could also be steak, thick, juicy, and delicious.
I also can’t decide between an ocean and a sea,
both are big and pleasant to the eye.
There are so many things to choose from that I can’t decide,
I think I’ll choose monkey because he’s wild and crazy
55
THEY TELL ME TO BE … JAZMINE JOWERS
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a sponge soaking up information.
I tell them I am a fish flopping as fast as I can.
They tell me to be an as graceful as a dove that makes no mis-
takes.
I tell them I am an eraser cleaning my mistakes.
They tell me to be a boat sailing through the pacific.
They tell me to be as soft as a rose.
I tell them I am a venus fly trap eating things in my way.
They tell me to be a blue jay soaring in the sky.
I tell them I am a squirrel eating acorns.
Really I am none of these things.
I am a beautiful Daisy sitting in the sunlight.

MY FAVORITE SEASON JORDAN STOUT
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
My favorite season is summer
Because we are in school the other three, which is a bummer.
Outside the weather is hot.
So we go to the river and find a nice spot.
The white clouds and the blue sky.
The baby birds in the trees learning to fly.
Families and friends outside playing games and having fun.
A father teaching his little kids how to shoot a gun.
The kids go down to the swimming hole,
And while playing football in the yard score a goal.
Going over to grandma’s house for a visit,
Her cooking you fried chicken and cornbread in a skillet.
Laying out at night looking at the stars,
Or being bored and counting the cars.
Then it is time to go back to school so we won’t get any dumber.
My favorite season is summer.

PROCRASTINATOR JUSTIN HOFFMAN
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I am a procrastinator; I always put things off.
There are always things I would rather do.
Way more than the things I’m supposed to.
I never make my deadlines for school,
And when it’s over I feel like a fool
I wait and time keeps going on.
Eventually the due date is long gone.
It feels like a punch right in the gut,
Like I’m stuck in a hole digging a rut.
Every time I feel like kicking my own butt.
I will get better, this I must.
I have to or my head will burst.
It’s not worth all this stress.
That’s why I have to do my best.
But honestly that is a long quest.

IMAGINE KELLY LONG
THOMASVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Imagine a storm is a wind chime, rocking in the wind.
Imagine the wind is some water, moving in a pot.
Imagine thunder is a telephone, ringing loudly, wanting to be
answered.
Imagine lightning is a bird, chirping loudly for the other birds to
hear it.
Imagine rain is a branch, falling toward the ground.
Imagine stars are pieces of paper, falling toward earth.
Imagine the sun is an eagle with a white head.
Imagine the sky is a blue piece of paper, running towards the
clouds.

DO YOU REMEMBER??? KELNESHA STABLER
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Do you remember the day we first met?
As we laughed and talked
And watched the sunset?
Do you remember the times we cried?
As the pain came along
And all the times we tried?
Do you remember the times we shared?
As well as the problems we had
And the way we both cared?
Do you remember the bad?
As well as the good
And not one day were we sad?
Do you remember the day I put a smile on your face
As we went through the pain, but in the end everything was a
gain
And no one can ever take your place!

THEY TELL ME TO BE LIZZIE FAIRCLOTH

They tell me to be a horse running wild and free.
I tell them I am a cat lurking in the shadows waiting for prey.
They tell me to be a leaf dancing in the wind.
I tell them I am a tree standing sturdy and strong.
They tell me to be an ocean big and wide.
I tell them I am a river running dry.
They tell me to be a bus loud and fast.
I tell them I am a car moving as fast as I can.
They tell me to be a meat so savory but not sweet.
I tell them I am a cake so sweet and sour.
They tell me to be a pencil so sharp and dark.
I tell them I am a paper so dainty and light.

RED LIGHT MARY ROBINSON
LOWER PEACH TREE
On the corner of 25th and 26th street
Stopped at a red light
Not sure what I'm doing
Where I'm going or if I even want to
But I can't stay here
Waiting...
"Change," I scream at the light
Still waiting...
Always waiting, marking time,
Never really going anywhere
I can't take this anymore.
I rev my engine, willing the light to turn green
Not sure where I'm going
Or if I'll ever get there
But I just have to try
Green light-Finally!
I take my foot off the brakes and go

They tell me to be a scared cat and run away.
I tell them I am a house I stand up tall.
They tell me to be a piece of paper and crumble.
I tell them I am a book, it’s going to take a long time for my
pages to crumble.
They tell me to be a train and run on a full head of steam,
but I am a car I need to get more gas.

POETRY MATTHEW HARVEY
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Poetry really stinks.
I find it very boring.
There’s just too many kinks.
It’s like listening to an old man’s snoring.
I simply cannot rhyme.
I really don’t have the time.
What is a quatrain
or even a line?
My favorite poem is a Haiku;
the rest make me go koo-koo.
Except maybe a Limerick,
those will give you a real kick.
Maybe poetry isn’t so bad,
especially if you’re sad.
So if you’re in a bad mood,
read some poetry, it’s like eating good food.

MOVEMENT MIRANDA FRITH
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Running round and round
Walking slowly around
Jumping up very high
Falling down to the ground
Rolling over and over
Crawling all around
Strolling down the road
Keep going ‘til you are found
Dancing ‘til you can no more
Flying so not to hit the floor
Driving near to far
Reaching so you touch the stars
Kicking the still air
Punching out the anger
Just keep moving.

Come hither, sweet babe

Thy mother will be eternally grateful
For I owe her this much
Thou Oberon are upset
Forgive and forget dear Oberon
Or dwell in the conclusion ceaselessly

MY MOM IS LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE WENDELL MCCASKEY
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Instead of shaking me out of place,
She shakes me into place.
When she rushes in from work,
She cracks through all the dust and grind.
She shakes me when it’s time to wake for school.
She stirs through the kitchen
Making the pepper tremble as she moves.
The dishes rattle
As she prepares a meal.
The rumbling of her footsteps
Sometimes gives me a fright.
She clashes with me with her fussing
When I haven’t done anything right.
When bed comes,
She is calm and shifts me with her sweet kisses

WHAT SHOULD I BE? PARKER ADKISON
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a tree, blooming and tall.
I tell them I am a piece of grass, hiding and small.
I want to be a stream, flowing and calm.
Or should I be an ocean, entertaining all?
I could be a pair of scissors, cutting and shaping.
I guess I could be a pencil, making and creating.
To me I could be spaghetti, pleasing and helping.
Or would I be some chicken, making sounds of burping and
belching?
I could be a car, riding and being one that sings.
( Radio )
It would be better to be a plane, soaring and showing my wings.

Sweet home to old Alabama
Where it’s more peaceful than many states.
I love Alabama because it’s a place where I was raised.
It’s a place where people can visit time to time with not much to
worry about.
Sweet home to old Alabama
Where it’s more unique than many other states.
Alabama is a place where living does not hurt your pockets.
Sweet home to old Alabama
Where it’s more religious than many states.
On almost every corner you can find some church that suits your
purpose.
Alabama has religious universities that encompass the state.
Whether you choose to stay or not.
Alabama is an original state.

SCHOOL MORNINGS LAMESHIA HUNT
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
It starts with my alarm clock going off
Then me hitting my snooze button
The shower awaits me
Rushing, hot, soothing water beating down on my body
Getting dressed is the difficult part
Finding a shirt and pants too
On the way to the kitchen to grab a snack
I grab my shoes and belt too
Mama is fussing saying don’t be late
I need a snack first before I go
Maybe chips and a drink
Or fruit and a drink
Who am I kidding I hate shakes
Running out the door trying not to fall
My dog barks as I enter the car
At the stop sign I look left and right
Checking for oncoming traffic
Now I’m swerving in and out of lanes
Trying to catch the bell before it rings
Running through the crowd trying to get to class
As the bell rings I take my seat
Out of breath, I let out a *sigh*
Whooooo!

It will have you in the dumps
All black and blue
It would do me no good to tell you how I feel
No one ever listens
That is just how it is
If only I could make a simple change
Oh how my day would never be the same
My heart feels cold
Frustration is rising
The blood is boiling
My anger is surprising
All sad and moody
My mood is like Sloppy Joes
All sloppy and droopy
Depression Hurts
Yes this is true
You would never understand
Until it happens to you

SPRING ANNA STIFFLEMIRE
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Springtime is in the air
Springtime, it’s everywhere
It is in the flowers swaying in the breeze
In the yellow pollen raining from the trees
Spring is in the grass, now turning green
It is in the excitement from the bee who is queen
Spring is in the children’s laughter playing at the park
It is in the stain on fingers left by the strawberry mark
In the swing of the batter’s bat as it cuts through the air
Spring is in the chalk drawn for four square
It is at the beach on the shore
Spring is in the sunbather’s soft snore
Spring dances to the sound of the waves churning
It is in the sting of the sun burning
Springtime, it is here at last
Springtime is a blast

PEPPERS! TAMERA CAVES
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Red, yellow, or green
Flames on your tongue can’t be seen.
They make your mouth really hot
Cooling it down, you cannot.
They are bursting with flavor
A taste that you want to savor.
They are Hot! Hot! Hot!
You’ll want them a lot.
Make your tongue sweat
Jump up and fret.
The furious heat
Will make you stand to your feet.
Jalapeno, Cayenne, or Bell
Give flavor to food so well.
Delivers taste, like it’s sent in the mail.

I AM? TOMMY CAVES
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
I am Round.
I go way up high.
They shoot me from far off.
I am shot off the glass soft.
I am round.
I bounce high.
When I miss,
The crowd wants to cry,
But they love it when I go swish!
I am round.
I get grabbed off the rebound.
The teams keep me inbounds.
I am loose when a player gets a hard foul.
I am dribbled for about an hour.

SENIORS TRAVARUS DAVIS
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
It’s so hard to believe
That it’s already 2013
It all went by so fast
But there’s no time to look on the past
We have our future
To look forward to
We will be together these last few days
Then we will head our separate ways
We have been through it all, good times and bad
One thing’s for sure I will never forget the ups and downs we
had
Graduation is nearly here
But there’s no reason to be in fear
We have made it this far
Now it’s time to shoot for the stars
I can’t promise you, you will succeed
But if you believe you will achieve
One thing is for sure, I will never forget the days
I spent with my classmates

THEY TELL ME TO BE ZA’MIYAH WHITE
THOMASVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
They tell me to be a cheetah, running quickly.
I tell them I am a lion, the king of the jungle.
They tell me to be a daisy, shining bright.
I tell them I am a lily, a flower that is wonderful.
They tell me to be a lake, the fresh a body of water.
I tell them I am a pond, a small body of water.
They tell me to be a car, I am fast as a horse.
I tell them I am a truck, pulling a 3-ton tree.
They tell me to be a notebook, ready to be written in.
I tell them I am a ruler, ready to be measured.

WHO AM I TO BE? MOLIQUIA WILSON
CLARKE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
Who am I to be
if I am the success of a black woman?
Am I the woman who hides behind her color, or am I the young
black woman with African traits?
Am I the young woman who descended from those of the Afri-
can tribes?
The one who runs with the wild, hunts for clarity and peace?
Who am I to be if I wear my pants inside out or wear my toes
and nails in vibrant colors?
Am I that young woman who everyone frets and fears?
No. I am a young woman who was conceived to the parents who
no longer agree.
I am the child of a queen, the sister of a princess, and a daugh-
ter of a man who has failed many times.
Who am I to be if I say that I have once failed or if I am the suc-
cess of a black woman.
Am I the woman who hides behind her color, or am I the young
black woman with African traits?
I am a young black woman with the beauty and traits to those
whom are discombobulated.
Who am I to be?

RED SUN JESSIE LUDLOW
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
When the dawn breaks
The red sun rises
Over the deep blue sea
Sailors take fright
The pirates will fight
The seas are a battle ground
Greed they fight for
Justice is a lie
Sailors will die
In the honor of the King
Pirates will hang
When the red sun rises
Remember them not
Only weeping wives
To honor them
When the red sun rises
Greed will win
No man to survive
Her poison
When the red sun rises

SPIRIT WARRIOR JESSIE LUDLOW
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Lay me down in my mother’s earth
My heart no long beats
But my spirit soars
Carried on the eagle’s wings
My spirit leaves my mother’s earth
To join my mother’s heart
I am no longer of my mother’s earth
But of her Spirit
Here I watch over my people
Here I will protect my people
I will ride on the Eagle’s wings
Capturing their prayers
To take to my mother’s heart

BIG TALL JOHN JOAN OWENS
THOMASVILLE, AL
Big Tall John
That’s what they all call him.
He had them ole lil bitted ole eyes.
You couldn’t found a man around his statue or size.
He stood at 71/2 feet tall,
Weighed 300 pounds.
Big muscles in his long arms.
They were rounded and looked like a baseball.
Folks, that’s not all.
Just listen up folks while I finish tellin it all.
He had a wife and some children who looked like some of yawl.
Big Tall John
He had big ole giant feet.
Oh Boy, could he eat!
For breakfast he ate ten biscuits,
Ten or twelve pieces of bacon,
Six scramble eggs.
He would put a gallon of sugar cane syrup on the table, too
To eat with his biscuits.
125
BIG TALL JOHN (Cont. from page 124)
Big Tall John could eat ‘cause he was able.
That sugar cane syrup was so thicken.
It would take two or three biscuits just to absorb it all up.
And that’s no joke.
He would rinse all that food down with a gallon of
cold buttermilk before you could count to three.
After that, Big Tall John was gooden ready for the day.
He had time to waste during chores like feeding the chickens,
Slopping the hogs,
Cutting down trees,
And hauling them ole logs.
It was just by luck he made it through each day and did not stum-
ble, trip nor fall.
I would need more time and space folks just to tell it all.

THE CHARACTER KELSEY WESTBROOK
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
She has many personalities. She is pretty much always very silly,
funny, and hyperactive, but knows when it's time for her to be
serious and act her age. She very seldom gets mad, and when she
does, it's not for very long. She thinks being popular and hatred
are highly over rated. She is almost always cheerful and happy.
She is very loud and obnoxious at times. She loves to sing,
dance, and act. She sings whenever she gets the chance, and al-
ways has her mp3 player with her. She can be irritating, but is
also lovable and caring. She likes to impersonate things like
movies and shows, or even a family member or a friend. She has
a fraternal twin and they are... pretty much the opposite of each
other... like day and night. She is often described as nocturnal
because she stays up all night and tries to sleep all day. She is
also described as a free-spirit and care-free... Mainly because she
doesn't seem to let anything bother her too much. She is very
short... 5'1 to be exact, and she wonders if that'll ever change.
She can be very sweet and very stubborn at the same time. She
feels everything so deeply and doesn't like change very much.
She just discovered that she is a HUGE romantic, and loves ro-
mance movies. She doesn’t like to read very much, but the only
books that she will read are the books from The Twilight Saga.
She is very weird, clumsy, and unique.
127
THE CHARACTER (Cont. from page 126)
She's a rebel in some ways. She doesn't care what people think of
her. If you like her, then yay; If not, oh well... She can’t please
everybody. She talks a lot and people say she doesn't know how
or when to shut up, but the truth is... She does, she just chooses
not to. She doesn't like for people to see her cry, so she holds it
in until she's alone. She entertains people by being herself, which
is very exciting because you'll never know what she's going to
do. She cries when she gets mad, sad or happy... like most peo-
ple. She's embarrassed about this, but she literally growls when
she gets irritated, annoyed, or as she says, “Irked”. She loves
food. She has a strong bond with her family members and tries to
keep them as close as possible. She doesn't have many friends,
but has a lot of acquaintances. Most of her friends live out of
state, and she has a reason for this... the reason is because she
doesn't like to lose people, so she tries not to get too close to peo-
ple so it won’t hurt her as much when they leave. As you can
probably tell by now, she's very sensitive, but she’s also never
felt stronger simply because she’s had to go through death, loss,
and pain so many times, but she’s gotten through every single
one of them… alone, and with the help of her friends and family.
She sees everyone as being the color red, which means, she does-
n't judge people by their appearances, but by their attitudes and
personalities, which she thinks is a person’s best quality. She is,
in fact, one of a kind, and she is definitely a character. Are you?

A FIRST ENCOUNTER SONYA JACKSON
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
I had an encounter with a man
He was very gentle in holding my hand
He caught a glimpse of my eyes
Oh dear he caught me by surprise
He was very weird in all his ways
To figure him out took some days
The clothes he wore was dark as night
To look upon him was such a sight
He wore a big black rough round hat
On his back was like that of a cat
He was very fearful to look upon
I could go on and on and on
A first encounter with a man
Who had save something in a can
Holding the can close to his heart
Writing something on a chart
A homeless man I gather was he
While bending bowing down on his knee
It looks as though he was praying to God
But then in his hand was an I-pod

THE YELLOW TEN SPEED BRADY BENNETT
THOMASVILLE, AL
Grandma Lina got it for Christmas with a plan in mind
To teach me a lesson that would help me in time.
The bike was shinny, bright and cool
Just for me but it had some rules
From Monday till Saturday it would be locked up
Later finding out it was just to ride to church
She gave me a dollar to pay in service
But the store on the way made me so nervous
With a dollar in my pocket and candy on my mind
This was a lesson that would help me in time
She was saying unto me, “Put God first in all you do and the
things you need will be added unto you”.
Thanks Grandma Lina for all the lessons!
It was all about God blessings.

Get back home and put Rat in his pin

In the dawn of the day your beauty is none the less

Looking ahead I know what I want in life
I am waiting for the day to make you my wif

THE HUNT HUNTER LEWIS
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Sounding of the alarm clock,
I’m up and headed to greet nature.
The warm spring air hits my face.
Waiting patiently, I listen for that sound that makes the hair on
the back of my neck
Stand.
Suddenly a turkey gobbles answers with a loud, bone-chilling
gobble.
My heart is racing rapidly.
I take out my mouth call and give him a soft yelp.
He gobbles.
It’s game on!
A few minutes pass and no sign of the wise, old gobbler.
All of sudden, I can hear the drumming of his wings.
I finally see him closing the distance,
155
THE HUNT (Cont. from page 154)
My heart feels as if it is coming out of my chest.
I quietly click off the safety and aim at this majestic figure.
I cut at him one more time.
He sticks up his head…
Boom!
It is all over!
At that very moment I wish I could replay the morning all over
again!

RIDDLE SAMANTHA FRYE
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Whatever it is, it must have
the listening secrets
of falling rain.
Two strings, one pierced cry,
here and there in the searing beam
that is like the twilight sound
coming over the hills, American singing
beneath its canopy of poisoned air.
The tongue even lies to itself
like a saint dying upside down,
in a land of shadow,
spread eagled on the soaking earth
that weeps light and rain.
The surfs of the body
are mating in the unopened crown of a Shasta daisy
rolling away in the wind.

DONE FIGHTING EMILY SWIFT
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
I’ve done this act a time or two, a rhyme for few, a rhyme for
you
So how do you do the things you do? You ask.
Well, you see, it’s not that hard to be me
Indulge in and devour lies of the obsolete
Believe… that’s what they say, I pray.
Have a little faith… they say, I pray.
Your Holiness have mercy on me because you see… God, It’s
me, Emily.
Your slithering, never ending, cunning, cumbersome, insidious
mess
Of dense deceitful distress
Relentless in my ways
And they say I’m still saved…
I pray? Do I pray? Is that the only way?
So I’ll just say…
It’s not that hard to be me…
Ding Ding
My time in the ring…
Well, you heard it. I know you heard it.

A coquet having a contiguous colloquy with me
while I am
hoping… tht coalescence will commerce
with this clandestine crony…
Oh! But the constraint that taints credulously
my confound dreams…
though it seems…
theses dreams…
consummate…
I’ve now become irate
This was not our fate… my dear confrere
Since you conferred
with another…
our coterie can no longer be.
And this crescendo tempts me to leap out this window…
for now you are but a ghost
that haunts, taunts, and flaunts…
your ring to me.
I bet soon you’ll be free from this comely comity… you’ll see.

LETTERS FROM MOM EMILY SWIFT
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Here I am to deliver
this condemning letter
that came from your mother
who seems to be an incapable lover
she remains a hypocritical lover
only to cover he jejune life even further
she is not an arbitrator; she is an arbiter
the epitome of hugger-mugger; life sucker
always making herself look nice like a healer…
forgiver
inspirer
insurer
forever…
realistically, she’s a dagger back stabber
a hyper hider sniper
a bitter eager bragger with no benefactor
an ignorant debater who has no advisor
and it all begins to smother
‘cause she’s now a familiar borer
torturer
hijacker
shunner
Jawbreaker and salt shaker…er
Right into the aperture
Love…er,
Your mother

TEACHER KAYLA JORDAN
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
There once was a teacher,
who lived under the bleachers.
He only had one pair of sneakers,
but he was the coolest teacher.
He never gave a test,
that is why he was the best.
He just sat under the bleachers,
And tried to be a fun teacher.
He taught us about life;
with him there was no strife.
He never gave a dirty look.
He will always be number one in my book.

LET ME STAY SCARLETT SALTER
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Twelve weeks have gone by,
And all you do is cry.
You need to be strong,
So that nothing will go wrong.
I wasn’t mistaken,
I am a blessing in the making.
The Lord says that I am meant to be,
If you just wait, you will agree.
It won’t be long until I am born,
Just keep me in here where it is warm.
Trust in God he will find a way.
Just please mommy, let me stay.
I am now entering into the Pearly Gates,
Because you could not seem to wait.
Jesus now holds me in his hands,
because I was not part of your life’s plan,
I will still love you mommy, and one day I will see you again.

MATH KELSEY LEDKINS
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Math oh math oh where do I begin?
The adding subtraction, it all makes my head spin.
The long hours of study just trying to find a hope
That one day math will come easy, but boy that’s a joke.
The multiplying and dividing of numbers and letters
Who in the world would have thought of putting those two to-
gether?
Slope and lines they are intertwine
But how I wish they wouldn’t get in such a bind.
Graphs and charts are easier to read
We should all at least pass with a C.
The teacher grading papers from their desk
The comments they make, make me think I failed the test.
But do not get me started on the warm ups we take
They make me want to sit there and shake.
165
MATH
( Cont. from page 164)
They make me want to sit there and shake.
But then when I see the fractions on the sheet
It makes me want to find a way to cheat.
Mean, median, mode and range
How I wish math would never change.
Geometry is not any fun.
The shapes and lines make me want to run.
But Pythagorean theorem I can handle that
It’s almost as easy as swinging a bat.
Math can sometimes be fun when the teacher is teaching
Until I fail a test and then it feels like I’m getting a beating
But now I am done
Math is number one.

HAPPENINGS DOMINIQUE STALLWORTH
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
There comes a moment in your life when you decide to change
Whether it be for better or for worse
Change is something we cannot hide from
Change is eminent.
No matter how young or old
We all have a story to tell
The things that happen to us that provoke a change
Some stories are tragic,
Some stories are heroic.
Some things that happen to us make our emotions run wild.
Then we begin to judge, but I would always say
“Unless my happenings happened to you, judging me is some-
thing you do not have the
authority to do”.

ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Looking at her from afar
She shines bright like a star,
I think about her throughout the day
My love for her words can’t explain,
When I hold her in my arms
I gaze into her eyes with a charm,

She tells me her love for me I will never know
When we separate its gets dark,
When we reunite she gives me spark,
I cannot picture like without her, I hope we stay together
for
forever.

TORTURE NATALIE QUIJSEN
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Some things change,
While others remain
But some shall never be the same
I thought this would work
But you kept my heart
And ripped it apart
I loved you so
even though
you weren’t with the flow
you kept and tortured me
from the inside out
but all we know is there’s no doubt
that there’s an ending of this curse
so I think I’ll rid you
but I know you’ll come back through
days pass by
and you’ll be sitting there
watching me cry.

What to say that hasn’t been said, words complied to
serve a purpose
Looking for resources inside my head, without meaning my
words will be worthless
Creativity eludes me as I sit alone, even the silence distracts
Drumming with pencils on a desk, this is how I react
I think of a line that seems to be clever; and then I jot it down
I read it over but then however; my proud smirk turns into a
frown
I look at the clock and it looks back, signaling with its hands a
warning
Motivation I now lack, why didn’t I write this this morning
I begin to lose hope and forfeit and declare procrastination the
victor
But then finally a thought hit although I wish it would have been
quicker
If I wrote about not being able to write, would they think I’d
flipped my lid
Without any other options in sight, that’s exactly what I did.

Of course I, MaryCate Hereford, was there dressed like a surfer
Although it was cold the first few days, to have fun we found
our ways
Paid $25 to hear Juicy J, It was so packed, there were so many
people in our way
Eventually this fun week came to an end, it was back to reality
for me and my friends

DREAMS JESSICA PARNELL
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
In a world filled with sorrow
It is said look for tomorrow,
And in it you will find
Someone you thought was left behind.
It’s a little girl that was so very shy And
Now she has grown, And reaches for
the sky.
The sky has no limits Of
that she is told, So now she
has reached And found her
gold!
Her gold is her life And that
makes her smile, For when
she is happy Her life is
worthwhile.

SIMPLY PUT CHARA REEVES
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
It was like yesterday
When I Looked Out The Window
And wanted To Play
Kids All Running Around
But Mommy Had Had a Long Day
No One To Watch Me
Or No Place To Go
So I Simply Hopped On The Couch
And in My Journal I Wrote…

UNCONDITIONAL ARTISHA RUDOLPH
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
I confess
I’m a mess
Who deserves to treat you this way?
Piece by piece I’ll undress the things I try to hide
From my only guide
To live this life successfully
Worry Free
Right along with me
Hand in hand
But here I stand
Neglecting thee
But what I have done has disgraced me
Broken me
And all the unnecessary hurt has seeped through the
holes where he would have filled me
But I couldn’t let him be
Oh I asked for trouble I begged for it
I gave it directions to me
I locked my spirit man up so he wouldn’t rescue me
I invited the enemy into my dreams
I let him help me plan my evil schemes
While Jesus was knocking at my door, I did quiet dirty
things
Drove myself to being as weak as a rose petal
And after all of this I hear my father
177
UNCONDITIONAL
(Cont. from page 176)
Weeping crying out to me
I love you even now!
Without you having the smallest thought to turn away
If you ever decide to
I’m here to help you
And then a reconnection a confession a heart to heart
A turning away
And right when I least expected an army of sin has bom-
barded me
Back to my knees again
But he’s holding my hand
To pull push me back up again
Unconditionally forever with me
In every struggle I see
He stands in the gap for me
Just to fight for me

THINGS I ENJOY MARGARET TAYLOR
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Bright Spring Mornings
The birds singing so gaily
Meeting with BCM members
the joy of sharing time daily
With friends making memories
Warm summer showers
Bringing forth bright flowers
So many blessings
Too numerous to count
Thanks to the giver of all things.

WHAT BCM MEANS TO ME SYLVIA RUFFIN
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Because Jesus died for us all
Being made to carry our burdens to judgment hall
Because he shed his blood for me
Basically he set our souls free
Christ is the Lord is our Savior
Caring for all with no impartial favor
Christ and God created everyone in his image
Concerned for us all we should pay his homage
Mercy is what Christ shows everyday
Many of us do not mean what we say
My Jesus never slumbers or sleeps
May the love of Christ will we forever keep
181
WHAT BCM MEANS TO ME KAY SMALLEY
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
It is comfort foods, like potato soup!
Or, it’s fried chicken from the chicken coup
Please don’t think I come for loaves and fishes
At BCM there are lots of good dishes
I know lunch is the main event for some
But food is not the reason we all come
Now, we all love Jake for his attitude
He always speaks kindly, is never rude
A love for God brings us all together
It matters not, the time or the weather
__________________________________________
BCM is a good ole time
Miss Debbie asked me to make a rhyme
“Bout what BCM means to me
There we learn about eternity
I Love the friends that I have made
I hope their memories will not fade
I treasure each with open heart
I do wish we never had to part
Miss Debbie is so good to all
She wants us all to answer God’s call

ASCC GILBERTOWN JUANITA LANDRUM
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
The road has been long
But I’ve finally reached my goal.
The friends I’ve made will never grow old,
Because they have reached into my soul.
The faculty has always been there
They never let me feel blue.
Miss Angie is the best
Maybe now she can take a rest.
Mr Turner he’s so cool
Even when he makes you feel like a fool
Miss Debbie always leads the pack
She never let me look back
My time at ASCC has been the best
Now it’s time I take a rest.

BAPTIST CAMPUS MINISTRY DEBBIE JIMERSON
ALABAMA SOUTHERN FACULTY
I was baptized reading what the Bible taught,
The glory of Heaven and the miracles Jesus had brought.
Sunday School, Choir and Vacation Bible School
These were my summer lessons and the greatest tool
Through the years I have trusted in God’s grace to prevail
I suffered trials, tribulations and the death veil.
Although life has taken me far from this security ,
I never ventured far from the Baptist simplicity
We are all saved by God’s grace and one big family
He brought us to this present BCM calamity
We meet weekly bonding for life
Forming morals and virtues from our strife
No greater gift, not sliver nor gold
Could BCM and Heaven hold

MT PLEASANT BAPTIST CHURCH JESSE PACE
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
My mother took me to this church all my life
Mt Pleasant Baptist Church carried me through my strife.
I raised my children with these rules
Bonding forever God’s Golden rule
When storms and trials come my way
I call upon the Lord and his blessing each day
This church is my rock and my salvation
The same rock Peter claimed was our salvation
This church is my home in Womack Hill
It is God’s light standing on a hill

MATH AMY HUDSON
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
Letters and numbers do not mix well at all
Sometimes they make you want to hit a wall
But after you learn to use your brain
You will see just how much you gain
Multiplying and Dividing may not seem so fun
Just put it in your calculator and you are all done
Fractions and Decimals may seem real hard
After you get the hang of it you will be on guard
There is only one key to factoring that you might need
Tic Tac would be the chart indeed
When trying to figure out the best place to stop
All you have to do is look at the top
Pie and square roots are brain busters too
But too bad the homework isn't up to you
Teachers might say don't sit around and play
And the ones who do just might have to stay

CALLA LILY SHANNON
ALABAMA SOUTHERN
My Calla Lily has her own scent, style, and poise about her.
She bends in the wind in a different direction than any other
flowers that bloom.
Below the earth, her roots in God and family anchor her so
tightly
That she has withstood controversy and criticism.
Her petal, though soft to the touch is yet strong and resilient.
After the Malawian rain, the sun shines upon her beauty.
She stands erect on her own- adaptable to any condition.
My Beautiful Calla Lily graces the presence of all,
As she dances in the hearts of those who love her most.

MELODY ASHLEY HOLLINGER
MONROEVILLE
Standing on the roof
While I'm viewing you over here with me Eternity spent looking
for the flowers That drape the sky As I create an eye to look over
and beyond The stars Feelings I get put me back at start Staring
out my window while I listen to the melody Sometimes I feel as
if Frank is speaking right to me Again I dream as I snap back to
myself And I realize I have my health But nothing better than
wealth I decide I want riches Instead of meaningless pictures
throughout my mind To force me to reminisce all those times To
pay it forward Savor moments, until there Are broken keys, bro-
ken glasses and nothing to look forward to

I AM “ALABAMA IN THE MAKING” SPECIAL SECTION
DEBORAH RANKINS TUNSTALL
This special section of poetry is comprised of over 70
poems inspired by the great state of Alabama and a special
exhibit, ALABAMA in the MAKING: Traditional Arts of
People and Place. This exhibit by the Alabama Folklife
Association (AFA) opened for viewing at the Kathryn Tucker
Windham Museum on the Alabama Southern Community Col-
lege campus from February 1, 2013 through March 15, 2013.
Alabama in the Making is a traveling exhibit and an
innovative effort to present AFA research collections from the
Smithsonian Project and Alabama Community Scholars
Institutes 2004, 2006, and 2008. The collections are photo-
graphs, audio interviews, and videos. Using iPads, visitors are
able to navigate through these collections and listen to Alabam-
ians tell the stories of their experiences in folk and traditional
arts including foodways, music, occupational folklore, and mate-
rial culture. There are five kiosks, and each one represents a
region of Alabama: Gulf Coast, Southern Appalachians, Wire-
grass, Black Belt, and Tennessee Valley.
According to AFA Executive Director, Mary Allison
Haynie, “This vibrant and colorful exhibit truly expresses the
diverse cultures of Alabama, our unique lifeways, and the rich
heritage of people like us.”
The Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum location was
selected because it honors the legacy of one of Alabama’s great
knowledge bearers, artist, storyteller, and writer, Kathryn Tucker
Windham.
189
In celebration of National Poetry Month and to capture
“Alabama lifeways,” submitters were given the opportunity to
express their Alabama experiences in poetry. To capture their
poetic expressions, the popular I AM poem’s name and template
were modified to fit the exhibit’s title and theme. The title, I AM
Alabama In The Making, along with its template, was made
available to those wanting to share their expressions. Turn the
page, and read these expressions. Experience Alabama through
the words of southwest Alabamians of all ages and backgrounds.
Alabama Southern Community College Library System
thanks the Alabama Folklife Association for selecting the
Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum Library as one of its first
year exhibit stops. This artistic cultural endeavor with Alabama
Southern Community College brought forth creative writing
opportunities that may not have taken place. We are honored to
include this special section of poems in the 2013 Anthology of
Poems. Enjoy!
The Alabama in the Making exhibit is made possible by funding from the
National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the
Humanities, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the Alabama
Humanities Foundation.

I am Alabama in the Making, inquisitive and amazed.
I wonder if we know how blessed and amazing we really are.
I hear all the negative talk.
I see just how much we don’t know about ourselves.
I want Alabama to discover who she really is.
I am Alabama in the Making, alarmed and alerting.
I pretend to be informed but I discovered that I don’t know the
half.
I feel it is my duty to inform and help.
I touch the lives of so many who don’t know who they really are.
I worry that I’m not doing enough
I cry sometimes because I can’t seem to make a difference.
I am Alabama in the Making, determined and praying.
I understand that I must try each day to reach at least one.
I say we need to know who God is and what a rich heritage He
has given to Alabamians.
I dream of a better Alabama and a better US.
I try to let those around me know that God made us so very spe-
cial.
I hope that someone will hear me and change.
I am Alabama in the Making, hopeful and anticipating.

that arise in life.

ceived and cast out.
I cry because they don’t know the true source of Peace and Bold-
ness.

XAVIER LOFT ON ALABAMA SOUTHERN 2013 POETRY SLAM
GUEST POET
After being hit by a drunk driver, Xavier began writing poetry during his three month hospital stay. He started performing his poetry five years ago. In that brief time, Xavier has competed and won a spot on the Montevallo slam team, Bama Slam. As a member of Bama Slam, he has competed in the Southern Fried Poetry Slam, as well as the National Poetry Slam held in Bos-ton. This led to invitations for him to perform in the Midwest and Europe. He is also a member of the Alabama Poetry Slam Team. Xavier has won individual slams in Arizona, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and the birthplace of the poetry slam, Chi-cago. In late 2011, he founded the Tuscaloosa based slam team, Southern Flow that hosts monthly poetry slams. For the last 8 years, he has been employed by Johnson Controls in Cot-tondale, AL as a lab engineer .

inspiration were a testament
to his trials. ASCC students

many to tears while listening
to his story of triumph.
ASCC students also used the
mic to express their feelings
