Al-Shifa Trust holds first anniversary of its Founder
The month of February will always bring us fond memories of “Beacon of Light” and Father of
Al-Shifa Trust, late Jahandad Khan. This year on 13th of Feb, we observed the first anniversary
of our Founder. Chaired by our current leader, Lt. Gen.(Retd.) Hamid Javaid, with Mr. Mushahid
Hussain Syed as Guest of Honor. People from all walks of life paid rich tributes to late General.
Present on the occasion were all Trustees and family members of Late Gen. Jahandad Khan. At
the end, the President of the Trust, Mr. Hamid Javaid while eulogizing the role and leadership,
pledged to follow the commitment and dedication of Jahandad Khan and promised to attain the
lofty goals set by our beloved Founder. Earlier floral wreath was laid down at the last abode of
Late JD by Mr. Hamid Javaid. At the end, collective prayers were held for the departed soul.

what AST can afford to pay them, these selfless, altruistic, employees have given the name and
fame to Al-Shifa Trust through years of their hard work and commitment. On the occasion of

been serving devotedly for the last 22 years and has set an example of best office management,
Ms Mussarat Aziz, who has proved to be a role model nurse and is serving as Director Nursing at
Sukkur, Mr. Riaz one of the longest serving drivers at AST and it is no small achievement to be
at the driving seat of Lt. Gen. Jahandad Khan and still remaining unscathed for the last 20 years.

AST Muzaffarabad starts school screening program with the support of FHF
Fred Hollows Foundation which is a longstanding partner of AST, becomes the first INGO to
support our project at our newly established Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Muzaffarabad. Under
this project the screening of all the school children for vision problems in District Muzaffarabad
Al-Shifa Newsletter; Vol. 23, Number 53, April 2012
will be completed in one year time. The project has already started with cooperation of Govt. of
AJ & K. Our optometrists go to each and every school, train their teachers on how to record
vision of students, give awareness lectures and screen all the students with the help of trained
teachers. Many students were discovered to have deficient vision correctable by glasses but
neither the students, nor the parents or teachers were aware of this problem.
Sukkur hospitals holds successful surgical camps in Sui & Dera Bugti
Keeping up its tradition of holding surgical eye camps under challenging conditions, ASTEH Sukkur this
time held two surgical camps in the Dera Bugti and Sui area of Baluchistan Province. The response of the
community was overwhelming due to large unmet demand of cataract surgery. Jumma Khan Jamali 86
years old was blind for the last 20 years simply, because he could not have cataract surgery. “Today I can
see my grandsons for the first time in my life” said a beaming Jamali. About 275 cataract operations were
performed. Out of these over 50% were those who were blind for the last 10 years or more. This camp
proved a blessing for scores of such people.
Evening OPD starts at AST Kohat
ASTEH Kohat is fast becoming a popular eye care center for the people of KPK and Tribal
areas. After the introduction of latest Phaco-technology for cataract surgery in Kohat, the
community uptake of our services has increased multifold. Al-though, all the surgeons at our
Kohat hospital are doing phaco surgery, yet it became difficult to cope with the increasing
number of patients. To solve this problem, the hospital management has now started evening
OPD which has been very well appreciated by the community.
Al-Shifa Newsletter; Vol. 23, Number 53, April 2012
Recently, ASTEH also held one eye camp in District Lachi.
NAVTEC approves project for training
National Vocational Training and Education Center (NAVTEC), - a government institution- is a
long standing partner of Al-Shifa Trust and has supported our various training programs in the
past. This year again, NAVTEC has pledged to support some of our OMP training programs. For
the first time in Pakistan, the training program of Ophthalmic Ultrasound technician and
Ophthalmic Laser technician will be launched with the help of NAVTEC.
Iraqi doctors training at Al-Shifa
Under WHO EMR sponsorship, three trainees from Iraq attended 10 days training in low vision
and pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Zaid Abdul Nafi Ridah was the national program manager for
prevention and control of blindness in Iraq, while Dr. Najah Mohammad Al-Obyde - a female
ophthalmologist- was in-charge of low vision program in the country. Mr. Hamza Kassar Abbas
was the chief optometrist. The Iraqi guests were fully satisfied with the type of exposure to low
vision and pediatric ophthalmology. They were generous in their appreciation of the standard and
quality of clinical care, availability of advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment and high
quality of training. As they honestly put it, they were never expecting this in Pakistan.
Dr. Farah Akhtar, HoD Glaucoma becomes Professor
Dr. Farah Akhtar, Head of Department of Glaucoma at ASTEH
Rawalpindi was recently promoted as Professor. She will be now the
sixth Professor at Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology. With many
original research papers to her credit, she has played a pivotal role in
establishing a world-class department of glaucoma at Al-Shifa.
Prof. Qureshi Honored
Prof. Nadeem Qureshi, a leading vitreo-retina specialist of the country at Al-Shifa Trust was
recently honored with Prof. Latif Choudhary Gold Medal by Ophthalmological Society of

Pakistan. He has also won laurels at many international events. Recently,
one of his videos on vitreo-retina surgery got the first prize at an
international video conference in Thailand. Department of Vitreo Retina
at ASTEH Rawalpindi is one of the topmost specialty centers of the
country and is recognized by College of Physician and Surgeons,
Pakistan for post-fellowship subspecialty training.
More Al-Shifa Doctors get higher qualifications
We congratulate Dr Shama Khan, Dr Farah Islam and Dr Abdullah for being successful in their
FCPS examination with distinction. When asked about his future career plans, Dr. Abdullah
Naeem Syed remarked “I will love to excel in plastic surgery of the eye”. Good luck!
Pakistan Nursing Council approves LPN course at Al-Shifa
Due to limited training facilities and great demand of nurses in public and private health sector
both within country and abroad, there is a great need to develop more training centers. Al-Shifa
Trust has taken another step to fulfill the national health needs. Licensed Practicing Nurse or
LPN is a short term training program to meet the shortage of nurses in the country. Pakistan
Nursing Council has now approved ASTEH Rawalpindi as a training center for LPN. The
program has already kicked off with 20 students.

AST participates in Pakistan Sweet Homes Annual Sports Week
Al-Shifa Center for Community Ophthalmology (ACCO) participated in the annual sports week
held in collaboration with Pakistan Sweet Homes organization for orphan children. For many
children it was unique experience of getting their eyes tested by modern portable gadgets at
ACCO stall. Tariq and Usman, two brothers at the venue were really thrilled to see the close
image of their eyes on attached TV screen where Dr. Alizai explained to them the unique
problem both of them were having since birth. By applying laser, Tariq has already been treated
and saved from possible future blindness.
Patients’ Column- Tele-Ophthalmology helps in restoring sight at hundreds of

Al-Shifa Newsletter; Vol. 23, Number 53, April 2012
by solving the problems of accessibility and affordability of
good quality eye care. With the help of Govt. of Italy
(PIDSA), this facility is now fully established at our
Rawalpindi and Sukkur Hospitals. Soon this will be
available for our Kohat and Muzaffarabad Hospitals and
many of our other outreach locations. Following is an
example of how this modern facility can work wonders
with problem of blindness.
Khurshid Shah, a poor laborer, and sole breadwinner of 4
family members hails from Mirpur Mathelo. One day he
woke up with sudden loss of vision in both of his eyes.
Overnight he had taken some locally made intoxicating drink. His wife and 6 years old daughter
escorted him to nearby hospital, but no diagnosis could be made. However the local doctor
suddenly remembered the offer made by Dr. Waqar Pathan of our ASTEH Sukkur during
holding of a surgical camp there to send all complicated cases to Al-Shifa Sukkur where
arrangement is in place for expert opinion through Teleophthalmology from Rawalpindi. As
Khurshid Shah was examined by our VR specialist Dr. Naveed Qureshi from Tele Hub at
Rawalpindi, a quick diagnosis was made and special intravenous medications on his advice were
urgently arranged from Karachi. Within three days of institution of medication. Khurshid is
again able to see and ready to go for work.
One day we may be able to deliver such consultation and treatment right at the doorstep
of such patients.
