Let’s look atthe HolyQuran to seewhat Allah

says about gossiping, slander, and backbiting. In Chapter 104Verse 1, Allah tells us: “Woe toevery slanderer and fault-finder/backbiter!” In Chapter49 Verse 6, we learn that wemust verify news before weregret that we have hurtpeople: “O you who believe! If a wicked person comes toyou with any news, ascertainthe truth, lest ye harm peopleunwittingly, and afterwardsbecome full of repentance forwhat ye have done.” And thenin Verses 11-12, Allah teachesthat we should not laugh orscoff at others’ problems, for

they may be better than you.We should not use derogatorynicknames. Avoid suspicionof people, and do not speakbadly of others behind theirbacks. “O ye who believe!Let not some men among youlaugh at others: it may be thatthe latter are better than theformer. Nor let some womenlaugh at others: it may be thatthe latter are better than theformer. Nor defame nor besarcastic to each other, nor calleach other by (offensive) nick-names: ill-seeming is a nameconnoting wickedness, (to beused of one) after he has be-lieved: and those who do notdesist are (indeed) doingwrong. O ye who believe!Avoid suspicion as much (as

possible): for suspicion insome cases is a sin. And spynot on each other, nor speakill of each other behind theirbacks. Would any of you liketo eat the flesh of his deadbrother? Nay, ye would ab-hor it…But fear Allah: for Al-lah is Oft-Returning, MostMerciful.” And finally, in Chap-ter 24 Verse 19, God tells us“Verily, as for those who likefoul slander spread againstthose who believe – grievoussuffering awaits them in thisworld and in the life to come:for God knows (the full truth),whereas you know (it) not.”So what does Allah say aboutthose who love to spread scan-dal? They will be punishedhere and in the hereafter.

PEACEPEACEPEACEPEACEPEACEThe news clearly does an inadequate job publicizing the stories ofcooperation between communities. Take, for example, a paradigmof cooperation in England. In August the London-based Board ofDeputies of British Jews, along with the Muslim Council of Britain, issued a joint statement calling for peace in the Middle East and anincrease in constructive dialogue between British Jews and Muslims. There is no reason why the political-based hostilities in certain partsof the world need to divide communities everywhere. The statementissued by these British organizations condemned all forms of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and racism. It demanded an end to the tar-geting of innocent civilians in places of conflict. And it called formembers of these communities to work hard at getting to know eachother better to increase understanding. In the Jewish community wejust concluded our major Jewish holidays, Rosh Hashanah and YomKippur. During my sermon this year I spoke about the fact that oftenpeople are motivated by fear instead of love. While certainly thereare many conflicts in the world fueled by hostility and hatred, some-times those conflicts are fueled by fear. One side attacks first beforethe other side attacks, when, in fact, perhaps neither side was goingto attack. One side imposes its values on another community beforethat other community imposes its values when, in fact, perhaps nei-ther side had any intention of imposing its values on each other. Oneside demonizes and portrays as completely evil those with whomthey have a conflict before the other side has a chance to do so. Andyet, maybe neither side wants to attack the other, impose its valueson another or demonize another. It’s just that they are afraid that theother side might do it first. And that fear of what might happen endsup causing the very violence everyone was afraid might happen. Ifwe could move past fear and towards love, then maybe the initiativesof the good people within Britain can pervade how we address con-flicts in the world. Then, perhaps, we could move from hostility tounderstanding, from violence to peace, from conflict to cooperation, and from fear to love.

These habits can be changed, as when an individual comesto live in a new society and is gradually incorporated intoit, but it is almost impossible to change them unless thenew society offers patterns of behaviour which the new-comer can learn directly and objectively. When the newsociety lacks such patterns, each individual must stopand think each time before he acts. Moreover, what oneindividual decides to be proper, with relation to the basicideas and values of the new society may not agree withwhat another individual thinks is proper. The result isendless confusion and involuntary interference, and thepeople who are attempting to develop the new societysoon fall back into their old habits. This tendency can beobserved again and again in the history of religious sects.Such sects usually have a well-defined group of ideasand values in common and a strong ‘esprit de corps Lack-ing patterns for the expression of these in concrete pre-dictable behaviour, they nearly always end by revertingto the behaviour patterns of the society from which thebulk of the converts have been drawn. These patternsmay be reinterpreted and rationalized in terms of the newbeliefs but the patterns themselves undergo only minorchanges in the process. The only cases in which newforms of society have been established successfully havebeen those in which the-plan for the new society has in-cluded a large body of concrete rules of behaviour. Sectsin which the founder and his immediate successors exer-cise autocratic control will acquire such a body of rules.Situations can be brought to the Prophet as they arise, and the behaviour which he prescribes in each case be-comes a precedent for action in similar cases. Eventuallythe precedents become numerous enough to provide forordinary exigencies of group living and converts can learnthe new ways objectively and substitute them for theold.” The above discussion shows that to reform a soci-ety successfully and to establish it on new patterns, threethings are required: (i) the behaviour patterns should begiven in concrete form;(ii) the fundamental and general ideas are not sufficient.Detailed rules should also be provided;iii) All the social behaviour should be perceptible bysenses.

ALLAAH’SREMEMBRANCE

“Allah, there is no God save Him, the Ever-living, the Eternal.Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongsall that is in the Heavens and on earth. Who can intercedewith Him save by His leave. He knows what lies beforehumans and what is after them, and they encompass nothingof His knowledge save what He wills. His throne comprisesboth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary ofpreserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous. (2:255)Assalamu Alaikum, My dear sisters: Throughout the day, wemust try to consistently think about Allah (SWT) and praiseHim (Subhanallah..Glory be to Allah, Alhamdulilah...All Praiseis for Allah, AllahuAkbar...Allah is The Greatest). Allah is truly“The Majestic”, “The Mighty”, “The Creator”. He has createdthe masterpiece of this universe, however, His true masterpieceis in the Heavens. In the universe, from the birds to the flowersto the skies , the mountains and the beautiful seas; they are allbut a small sampling of Allah’s exquisite art. These creationsdo not know of its own beauty and significance, but we(humans) are the beneficiaries of these creations. We are theonly ones (as far as we know), who are capable of perceivingbeauty, appreciating it and expressing our wonder of Allah’screations. Every tree serves a purpose, as does every drop ofrain, every ray of sunshine, as does the darkness of the night.Allah (SWT) has created the sun, moon and stars for our benefitand we are all subservient to Him. Allah’s (SWT) greatness isreflected in humans, because He has given life to billions ofpeople on this earth, and He has created for each one, specificand unique features and personality, so that no one is exactlythe same (Alhamdulilah). Imagine a world without color, withoutbeauty, without trees, flowers, mountains, birds and withoutblue skies!!. Allah’s (SWT) magnificence shows in the colorsand beauty of the earth that He has created. Every breath of airwe breathe, every time we blink, every movement of our limbs, every heartbeat, every second we are able to see, hear, speak, think, taste, are all blessings from Allah (SWT), that we shouldnot take for granted. Allah (SWT) is truly amazing and He aloneis responsible for all these blessings. “Which of the favors ofyour Lord do you deny?” At the sight and thought of Allah’screations and craftsmanship, we should be moved to praiseHim. Let us consistently make the time to truly appreciate andacknowledge all of Allah’s (SWT) greatness and His manyfavors, and every time we see one of Allah’s (SWT) creations, and marvel at its beauty and power; let us instantly praise Allah(SWT) and know that all this is for us to appreciate and enjoy.

MUSLIMS LOVE EACH OTHERfor

AllaahAllaahAllaahAllaahAllaah

Continued on page 26, Inshaa Allaah

Why do Muslims love one another? Whatis the measure by which Muslims love oneanother? One of the main characteristicsof Muslims is that they have a great love ofAllah, Allah’s messengers and prophets andfor all Muslims who seek Allah’s approval. This bond of love and friendship betweenbelievers is revealed as follows in theQur’an: “Your friend is only Allah and His Messenger and thosewho have iman: Those who establish prayer and pay alms, andbow.” (Qur’an, 5:55) The true source of Muslims’ love for oneanother is their profound love of Allah. Believers whose aim in thelife of this world is to earn the approval and mercy of Allah andparadise spend their whole lives for Allah. As revealed in the Qur’anin the verse “Say: ‘My prayer and my rites, my living and mydying, are for Allah alone, the Lord of all the worlds,” (Qur’an,6:162), they seek to earn Allah’s approval in all they do and in alltheir behavior. The love of believers who dedicate all they have toearning Allah’s approval is also for Allah alone. The love of abeliever who knows Allah, who witnesses His might and great-ness at every moment and who feels His love, affection and mercythroughout his life, is incomparable stronger than any other love. His love for other believers will similarly be powerful and pro-found since it is based on love of Allah.

“IQRA”“IQRA”“IQRA”“IQRA”“IQRA”Submitted by: Bro. Farooq Shafi / Sunrise, Florida U.S.A

Before migrating to Madinah, the HolyProphet SAW went to the Kaabah andasked the custodian to open the door forhim. He frowned upon this request andrefused to open the door and asked the HolyProphet SAW to leave the premises. TheHoly Prophet said to him, “One day soon, the key to the Kaabah will be in my hands

and I will give it to whomever I please”. The custodian laughedand said, “It can only happen if all the chieftains of the Quraishare dead”. The Holy Prophet replied, “The chiefs will be presentthat day”. The custodian had not accepted Islam as of yet, sohe did not pay too much attention to this proclamation. Onthe day Makkah was conquered, the Holy Prophet cleanedout the Kaabah personally from all the idols and then cameout. He was holding the key to the Kaabah in his hand. Allgreat companions and others were standing, waiting anx-iously to see who was going to receive the honor of keepingthe key and be the custodian of the Kaabah. Usman Ibn Talha, the ex-custodian was standing there with his head down. The Holy Prophet SAW addressed Usman Ibn Talha of theBani Shaiba tribe and asked, “O Usman; Had I not told youthat one day I will hold this key and will bestow it at mydiscretion”? Usman Ibn Talha started crying and said, “Nodoubt you had said that. You are the true messenger of Allaah”.The whole crowd was in a pin drop silence. The Holy ProphetSAW said, “Take this key Ibn Talha. You (and your family)will keep this key until the Day of Judgment. It will not betaken from you and whosoever will try to take it from you, will be an atrocious & ruthless tormentor”. From that day tillnow, each and every person, be a king or emperor, requiresthe permission of Ibn Talha’s family. Until recent times, theKaabah was open to all. However, due to the ever increasingcrowd, it would be open twice a week. These days, it isopened only for a few dignitaries. The Kaabah was the mostsacred place even before Islam. It is said that the Kaabah isthe first ever worship place built on earth. Ibrahim AS re-constructed it after Gibraeel AS pointed out the current loca-tion. The black shroud of the Kaabah takes almost a wholeyear to complete. It is estimated that along with 150 kilosGold, about 50 kilos of Silver is also used to embroider theverses of the Holy Qur’an on it. The cost is estimated at 17million Saudi Riyals, equivalent to around 6.3 Million US dol-lars. This writer pondered that what if a simple shroud isused to cover the Kaabah and this money used to start acollege/university so the graduating students would have abetter understanding of “Tawheed” and the future genera-tions will reap the benefits? Do we suppose that by using 150kilos of gold and 50 kilos of silver, we somehow enhance theeminence of the Kaabah? Don’t we see that the life, libertyand honor of the Muslim ummah are at stake? Don’t weknow that the biggest reason for that is the ignorance andlack of proper Islamic education?

FROM EAST AND WEST:PROPHECIES OF ISLAM IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

It is a lamen-table thing, Ithink, thatJews, Chris-tians and Mus-lims are oftenunaware ofmany of thecommonalitieswhich existbetween the

three faiths. When we do ponder overthem, we so often tend to focus on theobvious similarities: For example, we allworship the same God. We all recognise– with one or two obvious exceptions –the same Prophets of Allah. Jews andMuslims are also very close in their un-derstanding of the oneness of God, whilstChristians and Muslims believe in thesame Messiah. We all recognise the scrip-tural validity of the Tourah as it was origi-nally given to Prophet Musa (AS) also, and although the Christian scriptures inthe New Testament have been subjectedto considerable change since they were

first penned, and are not connectedto the original Injeel given by Allahto Prophet Eesa (AS), they still con-tain much of value. These common-alities are appreciated by many Jews,Christians and Muslims. However, one which is often neglected is thestudy of the prophetic passages in theNew Testament which specificallyrelate to Islam. Why is this impor-tant? Well, Christianity is a religionwhich sprung forth from what mostpeople refer to as Judaism, but un-like Judaism in Christianity there isno “prophetic tradition” in the con-ventional sense. Although Christiansrecognise the authority of the proph-ets in the Tourah, the only prophetwith a direct historical link to thatfaith is Eesa (AS), or Jesus, as theChristians call him. Christians believethat Eesa (AS) was the last of theprophets.

As much as I love Hijab, I cannotbring myself to appreciate the argu-ments given in favor of Hijab espe-cially by men. So many men wouldsay it’s done because woman is a trea-sure that must be protected; and oursisters, without thinking deeply andreflecting on this argument, wouldagree. This is an essentially flawedargument. Nowhere in Quran does itsay that Hijab is mandatory becausewoman is a treasure like jewels ormoney. If anything, this argument ispatronizing and sounds really oppres-sive. Quran clearly states thosewomen are asked to cover their headsand chest so they can be saved fromcatcalls and negative attention frommen. A woman definitely looks moremodest when she is covered butplease let modesty not be our reasoneither; because surely there will beplenty of people out there who wouldsay that a woman in pants and topwithout Hijab looks modest enoughtoo. So what should be our reasonand our argument in favor of Hijab? This is where I say “to each one hisown” but if you have none, Quran isthere to guide you always. When Istarted Hijab, my reason was myown. It had nothing to do with mod-esty or catcalls. I didn’t think I wasbeing harassed without Hijab and nei-ther did I think I looked any less mod-est. I wanted Hijab because it estab-lished my religious identity withoutannounce of doubt. People from allwalks of life come up to me and say“Asalam o Alaikum” if I am wearingHijab. There is simply no mistakingmy identity and my religion. I love itthis way. For others, it can be someother reason.

HIJABHIJABHIJABHIJABHIJABAs an

identity, butnot a

protection tobe stolen.

Shouldn’t we put all the empha-sis on developing and nurturingthe future generation after meet-ing the basic necessities? Aren’tthe Muslims at each other’sthroat these days? Isn’t that thereason for us to go astray? Didwe forget what the Holy ProphetSAW said in his last sermon, “Opeople! are sacred”. The Muslim ummahis cutting each other’s throat. Itis the reason for our collectivecollapse. We are a sorry examplefor other nations. Aren’t we atrue example of what the HolyProphet SAW told his compan-ions, “Soon a time will comewhen the Christians and Jewswill trample the Muslims”. Thecompanions were astonished tohear this and asked, “Ya RasoolSAW, will we be in such smallnumbers?”. The Holy ProphetSAW replied, “No, in fact Mus-

lims will be present everywherein the world like the oceanfoam. But they will be sodrowned in the worldly affairs, that they will forget their deen”.Do we truly understand ourdeen? Aren’t we far behindmany nations in several aspects? From 1632 to 1653 AD, on thecommand of the Emperor, hun-dreds of workers constructedthe wonder of Taj Mahal, cost-ing about 20 Million Rupees, which is just a building and noth-ing but a mausoleum. In those

days, ONE Rupee equaled 30Dutch Stuivers and 0.15 Brit-ish Pound. In 1640 AD, 32 Mil-lion Rupees were equal to 4.8Million British Pounds. If wewere to figure an inflation rateof 14.1% as of today, we aretalking about more than 678.8Million British Pound; hencemore than 1,000 Million UDDollars or $1 Billion. Now, ac-cording to Wikipedia, HarvardUniversity, which is sprawledover 256 acres, was built at anestimated cost of $567.6 Mil-lion.

The best reason of course is justbecause Allah wants me to. Buthonestly while that argument isdesirable and acceptable to some-one who is a Muslim, a non Mus-lim would want to know more. And sometimes despite clear in-structions from Allah, there is thisnagging voice inside that pushesus to seek an argument, find a rea-son, for why Hijab is important. To shut that voice up for onceand all, find a reason and let yourreason be your very own. It canbe as simple as I feel more satis-fied, happier, and just content withHijab or I feel Allah is protectingme all the time when I have Hijabon. It can be anything but it hasto be based on your own logicwhich is secondary to Allah’s rea-son but would help you stay onthe right path when naggingvoices want to throw you off thetrack. May Allah keep us stead-fast in our decision to wear Hijaband may we gain true knowledgeof Islam. Ameen

BonesBonesBonesBonesBonesVitamin D has long beenknown to be an essentialnutrient for maintainingboth bone and musclehealth. However, recent

studies have shown that vitamin D may haveother multiple health roles including normalizingblood pressure, helping with adequate glucosecontrol, protecting against cancer, and otherimportant physiological roles. Studies haveshown that people who are deficient in vitaminD may be at risk for osteoporosis, muscleaches/weakness, psuedofractures, and othernonspecific musculoskeletal pain. Vitamin Dcomes from food such as fatty fish and foodsfortified with vitamin D as well as sunlight.Unfortunately, many individuals are deficientas a result of a diet high in processed foods, limited sun exposure, darker skin, obesity, anddrug interactions. Older adults are especiallyat risk for vitamin D deficiency, because asthey age skin cannot synthesize vitamin Defficiently. Seniors are also likely to spend moretime indoors, have inadequate intake of vitaminD, or are on drugs that may interact withvitamin D absorption. Recommended dailyallowances for vitamin D range from 600-800IU per day. Only your doctor can determinewhether or not your vitamin D levels areadequate enough to maintain your body’shomeostasis.Vitamin D roles - Helps utilize calcium.Vitamin D promotes calcium and phosphateabsorption. These minerals are essential forbone and muscle health and maintenance andprevention of osteoporosis.• Inhibits abnormal cellular growth. Vitamin Dhelps with cell differentiation and minimizingabnormal cell growth, a key component incancer development. Vitamin D may also havea protective factor against colon, prostate, andbreast cancer.• Helps prevent and treat type 2 diabetes.• Vitamin D helps keep your immune systemstrong. It also helps elicit and amplify yourbody’s ability to fight infection.• Blood pressure control. Vitamin D may helpwith renin production, an important chemicalin your body that contributes to blood pressurecontrol.

What is sinanyway?

Rev. Thomas Graf

By Rev. Thomas GrafProfessor at BC College, Florida

I remember years agohearing a wonderful jokeabout confession. It wasabout these little fourthgrade boys who were in

line to have the priest hear their confessions. In essence, what possible “sinfulness” couldsuch young children possess? In any event, the first boy entered and after reciting a listof things, he paused and then very seriouslysaid, “And I threw peanuts in the water.”The priest did not give this last statementmuch thought, and the little boy receivedhis penance and went on his way. The nextboy entered and after his list, he too spokeabout throwing peanuts in the water. Nowthe priest’s ears began to perk up. Boy afterboy entered and boy after boy ended withthrowing peanuts in the water. Finally, oneboy entered, went through his list but men-tioned nothing about peanuts. The priest nowpaused…and asked the young boy, “Didn’tyou throw peanuts in the water?” The boyanswered, “No father, I am Peanuts!” Cute, huh? In essence though, perhaps this lastmention during each confession was possi-bly the only true sinfulness committed. And…isn’t it interesting that this sinfulnesswas corporate…it affected others! Mostreligious/spiritual traditions make referenceto sin and sinfulness. They may use differ-ent names and have different ways in whichthey deal with sinfulness, individually andas a group, but nonetheless the reality ofthis concept is present. Our Jewish broth-ers and sisters just completed one of theirholiest days of the year: Yom Kippur. Alsoknown as the Day of Atonement, devoutJews involve themselves in strict fasting andceremonial repentance. Actually, from thetime of Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur(10 days) devout Jews are called to lookwithin and “make things right” with theirbrothers and sisters. Only in doing so, cantheir names be written in the Book of Lifeon the feast of Yom Kippur. The imagery isWONDERFUL, because if one indeed“makes amends” they can move forward,or if you will, “turn the page.”

Muslims Love Each Other for Allaah Dr. Harun Yahya / Ankara, Turkey

The fact that he knows that the friendshiphe enjoys with other believers will last forall time in the hereafter is another reasonfor that being very strong and permanent.Allah cites the moral values of the ProphetYahya (peace be upon him) in the Qur’anas an example of the love of believers: “[Af-ter the child had been born and grown Wesaid], ‘John, take hold of the Book withvigor.’ We gave him judgment while still achild, and tenderness and purity from Us— he had piety.” (Qur’an, 19:12-13) OurProphet (peace be upon him) also revealsin the Hadiths that believers’ love for oneanother is for Allah’s approval. Abu Zarrrelates: “Rasulullah (peace be upon him)said: “The most virtuous of deeds is tolove for Allah’s sake and to hate for Allah’ssake.” (Kutub-i-Sitte, Vol. 10, p. 140; AbuDavud, Sunnet 3, 4599) “The strongestbonds of faith are friendship for Allah, enmity for Allah and love for Allah.”(Kutub-i-Sitte, Vol. 10, p. 141) Believerswith a great love and fear of Allah and whohonestly strive for His approval of them, are auspicious people who bring beautyto the world. Because of these superiorvirtues they also love Allah’s creations, feel affection and compassion for them, and wish to protect them and do themgood. Allah has revealed that in return forthis fine love and their sincere devotion to

our Lord that stem from the faith in be-lievers’ hearts and their fear of Him, theywill be rewarded with paradise, the placeof the best love and devotion. The Qur’anis the Basis of Love Our Lord does notonly command His servants to love in theQur’an. He also describes in detail whatform the foundation of love will take. Forexample, He reveals that at the basis of aperson’s love for someone else will liepatience, loyalty, generosity, care, truth-fulness, courage, protectiveness and lov-ing other more than one loves oneself.Allah refers to this love as follows in theQur’an: “Those who were already settledin the abode, and in faith, before theycame, love those who have made pilgrim-age to them and do not find in their heartsany need for what they have been givenand prefer them to themselves even if theythemselves are needy. It is the people whoare safe-guarded from the avarice of theirown selves who are successful.” (Qur’an,59:9) As revealed in this verse, charac-teristics such as consideration, loyaltyand fortitude are the most significant in-dicators of love. People who are egotisti-cal and selfish, and not patient and for-giving, are totally devoid of true love.

What is sin anyway?By Rev. Thomas Graf

Continued from page 25

In essence, what is truly being celebratedthen is HEALING and FORGIVENESS.These are other familiar concepts withinreligious/spiritual traditions, and are thefruit of truly understanding our “sinful-ness,” its effect upon ourselves, our re-lationships with God, with others, and ourwillingness to reconnect and move for-ward. There indeed could be much dis-cussion/study of these concepts and theirplaces within different traditions. InJudeo-Christian Tradition, sin flows fromhuman beings desiring to be “like God.”Thus, to some degree, sin in these tradi-tions has its roots in idolatry: the attemptto put something/someone in the placeof the Creator. If you will, to allow some-thing/someone to control us. This under-standing of CONTROL seems to touchhome in a special way, as our Church ofSt. James the Fisherman is presently con-templating an outreach to addicts and theirfamilies/loved ones. (12-Steppers!) I saythis, because perhaps the best definitionof addiction that I have heard is that youknow you are addicted when “it controlsyou, and you cannot control it.” Our out-reach will be in the form of a monthly(One evening during the week.) 12-2tepService at our church.

prophetic transition; from the advent ofthe earliest prophet of Allah Adm - tothe advent of Rasoolallah. Perhaps morethan the other Ahl al-Kittab or “Peopleof the Book”, then, Muslims would ex-pect to see threads of prophecy relatingto Islam as we know it today in the scrip-tures of the earlier sharias held dear byboth Jews and Christians. Much hasbeen made – understandably – of pas-sages within these scriptures whichseem to prophesy the coming of ProphetMohammed (SAW). However, what isoften overlooked are passages whichclearly point to Islam as we now know

it. Today, Jewish scholars openly ac-knowledge – to their credit – that thenation of Israel did not cleave to the willof God as best it might, and that as apunishment they were eventually scat-tered amongst the unbelieving nations.During the ministry of Prophet Eesa(AS), however, they were still dwellingin Judaea. They were under the rule ofthe Roman Empire, but the nation atleast had recognised geographicalboundaries and a small degree of au-tonomy. Their removal from the landwould not take place until a later time.

Shaping the Muslim Youth

Youths from allraces and religionsare precious gems. They need to be

polished to withstand the rigours of time. This invaluable resource is needed for abrighter tomorrow; and so the youthsneed illumination, now! Our own Mus-lim youths need to take stock of them-selves and prepare for a challenging worldahead of them. Failing to grasp availableopportunities will inevitably result in themconfronting unwelcomed adversaries –poverty, crime, drugs and other damag-ing influences. For the realization of a se-cured future, our young Muslim broth-ers and sisters need to be equipped withthe necessary infrastructure to brave thewinds of an unpredictable future. Accord-ing to Maslow an American psychologist, social needs of people must be met if theyare to be motivated. Our Muslim youthsshould be gregarious by finding them-selves in youths groups, camps andmaktabs or madrassas to satisfy their so-cial desires that will place them in goodstead for the future. To face an uncertainfuture, our young Muslim brothers andsisters should develop their spirituality. This can be done in a variety of ways, one of which is the acquisition of Islamicknowledge that is Fard Ain on all Mus-lims. Any neglect by Muslim youths inimbibing Islamic education will renderthem vulnerable to the evils of the dayand dire consequences may ensue. Wherecan my young Muslim brothers and sis-ters acquire Islamic knowledge to spruceup their lives spiritually? Locally it can besourced at many different institutions oneof which is the Darul Uloom Institute atPembroke Pines, Florida. Beside localcentres of Islamic learning, others areavailable in countries such as India, Pa-kistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Malay-sia where they can seek further higherlearning.

Our Lord, who of course has aflawless knowledge of the behav-ior and attitudes of the servantsHe creates, their psychology inother words, describes the fea-tures of people who are lovelessand do not behave in accordancewith the moral values of theQur’an in detail in that book, andthus makes it easier for Muslimsto identify those characteristics.Allah reveals in the Qur’an thathard work and care and atten-tion are necessary for love. Henotes that loves needs to betended, just like a flower. Somepeople who do not know the truelove that Allah describes in theQur’an imagine that love is de-pendent on physical appearanceand that people can only be lovedif they are attractive. Yet people’sanatomical structures consist offlesh, fat, bone and blood; there-fore, were it not for the skin, thework of Allah’s matchless cre-ation, there would be very littleabout people to like. People whoturn their love toward matter donot in fact love that appearance. It is at this point that the basis ofthe true love that believers feelfor one another emerges. This isbecause believers love people, not just for their external appear-ance, but for the moral virtuesthey embody in their souls. Andit is believers who live by themoral values of the Qur’an andseek the approval of Allah whopossesses these moral qualities. For that reason, Muslims loveother Muslims. And among Mus-lims, they most love those theythey regard as having the mostpiety and being the most sincerebecause according to theQur’an, love is dependent on pi-ety, and Muslims most love theperson they regard as havingmost of Allah’s approval.

Answer: Answer: Answer: Answer: Answer: These are, for instance, the day of‘Arafah, month of Ramadan, Friday, the last partof the night, at dawn, during prostration, at thetime of rainfall, between the adhan and iqamah,at the time of encounter of armies, at times ofpanic, and when one’s heart is soft and tender.Abu Umamah reported, “The ProphetMuhammad (S.A.W), was asked, ‘Whatsupplication finds the greatest acceptance?’ Heanswered: ‘A prayer offered in the middle of thelatter part of the night and after the prescribedPrayers’.’ (Reported by Tirmidhi with a soundchain of authorities) Abu Hurairah reported, theProphet Muhammad (S.A.W) said, “The servantis nearest to his Lord when he is prostrating toHim, so make supplication in this state.” (Muslim)There are very many hadith found in variousbooks on this subject.Starting the Supplicationwith Allah’s Praise and Blessings on His Prophet.Fudalah b. ‘Ubaid reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, heard a man supplicatingduring prayer. He did not glorify Allah, nor didhe invoke blessings on the Prophet. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “He has been hasty.”Then he called the man and said either to him, orto someone else, “When any one of you prays,he should begin by glorifying and praising his Lordand then he should invoke blessings on theProphet, peace be upon him, and after that heshould supplicate Allah for anything he wishes.”

One major avenue for theMuslim youths to developthemselves, is the area ofsports. To some Muslims, sports is detestable. However,Science has proven that thepursuit of sports is a healthyone. Our beloved ProphetMuhammad (S.A.W.) foundtime to engage in physical ac-tivities such as running, swim-ming, wrestling and otherphysical pursuits. Drugs are ascourge upon the youths de-bilitating their mental andphysical capacities. What asad onslaught! When ouryoung Muslim brothers andsisters are lured to sports, thetendency for them to engagein drugs and other un-Islamicdeeds is greatly diminished. The ample expenditure of en-ergy in sports will thereforeinevitable generate copiousgains for our Muslim youthswhen immersed in physicalpursuits – thus enhancing theirfuture. This would include all individu-als suffering with addiction andtheir loved ones. I personallywas raised in an alcoholic fam-ily. My father suffered from thisaddiction and each and everyone of our family memberswere affected by this reality. Ipersonally attended Al-ANONand ACOA (Adult Children ofAlcoholics) and through theseinvolvements, through counsel-ing and through good sponsorsand friends, I have hopefullyachieved better understandingof this disease and its ramifi-cations that disconnect indi-viduals, relationships, familiesand communities. In someways, I have come to see thataddiction, of any kind andform, can be related to sinful-ness and must be treated withproper measures of introspec-tion, processes of seeking andreceiving forgiveness, so thathealing can occur. I rememberanother situation concerning4th graders. This was as apriest and I was hearing theirconfessions. One little boy en-tered, went through his “list”and then there was a pause. Forsome reason I asked, “Is thereanything else on your heart?”This poor little child of God,began to cry and said,”Fr. Tom,my daddy was drunk and hitmy mommy last night.” Afteranother pause…I said, “Really, you know my daddy did thatonce too.” Well, I wish youcould have seen this preciouslittle child change expression. There seemed to come someform of relief…not in hismother being abused, but in thereality that he/they were notalone in this situation. One ofthe things that most spiritual/religious traditions teach is thatwe are not alone. More so, ifwe work together we can in-deed re-connect. (That is the

What is sin anyway?By Rev. Thomas GrafContinued from page 26

definition of RELIGION—RE-LIGIO) However, if suchreconnection is to occur, itmust be authentic and it mustinvolve individuals, others andGod. As I heard at a FridayKhutbah, “The prophet-PBUH-was the most forgiving per-son. He was even ready toforgive his enemies As humanbeings we are responsible butalso make mistakes and we areconstantly in need of forgive-ness. Islam speaks about twoaspects of forgiveness: a)Allah’s forgiveness; b) Humanforgiveness. We need both, because we do wrong in ourrelation to Allah as well as ourrelations to each other.”

ture of our young brothers andsisters in Islam should seek aca-demic education to avert cata-strophic situations in their lives. Our Holy Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W.) said that secular edu-cation is Fard Kefayah, and soour Muslim youths will be heldaccountable to Allah for not pro-ducing the doctors, carpentersand other types of workersneeded to develop a Muslim so-ciety. Don’t let others on theother side of the fence steal thethunder from us by churningout a wonderful cadre of pro-fessionals. Muslims are leadersnot followers so let us be in theforefront of economic develop-ment. Preparation of the Mus-lim youths for the future shouldnot be left to them alone. Be youto the child’s parents, siblings, peers or other family members;the onus also lies on you to takeup the gauntlet and chart acourse for a secured future forthe youths. Failing to impreg-nate those virgin minds of ouryoung Muslim ones; may resultin unimaginable repercussionswhich we don’t want. So, allMuslims, please step up to theplate and play your part in themoulding of the lives of theyoung Muslims. Let’s hope andpray that our Muslim youthsengage in rewarding and con-structive pursuits to pave theroad for a bright future forthemselves and in the processkeep the flag of Islam flyinghigh.

This is revealed as follows in averse: “Some people set up equalsto Allah, loving them as theyshould love Allah. But those whohave faith have greater love forAllah. If only you could see thosewho do wrong at the time whenthey see the punishment, and thattruly all strength belongs to Al-lah, and that Allah is severe in pun-ishment.” (Qur’an, 2:165)

This means that the moneyspent to build the Taj Mahalcould have been used to erectTWO Harvards. In presenttime, about 3 Million Muslimsperform Hajj per year. If oneperson spends about $3,000 (avery conservative estimate), itcomes to about $9 Billion (ifthe calculations is correct).Let’s presume that about 10%are those who have performedHajj more than once. Insteadof going for Hajj every year, can you believe that we canbuild a Harvard every yearfrom this savings? If I amasked, I would say that in or-der to bring back the lost re-spect and dignity of the Mus-lim Ummah, we need to eradi-cate the prevailing ignoranceamong us. The journey of thisUmmah started from the Caveof Hira with the command of“Iqra” (read) and it should bere-started. It is the power ofknowledge that the angelsbowed down to man. And, ifwe want to re-claim that es-teemed status, we need to re-kindle the light of divineknowledge delivered to us bythe Holy Qur’an and the teach-ings of the Holy Prophet SAW.We will need to employ allavailable resources. TheImaam of Kaabah raises hishands to pray every year forthe Muslim Ummah to re-en-ergize Islam in their souls. Dowe suppose he can also an-nounce to those present thatif one makes intention to per-form hajj once again, s/heshould donate that money to afund that will be used to teachand educate the MuslimUmmah to re-kindle Islam intheir hearts and may AllaahSWT bless that person withthe rewards of performingHajj? Allaah knows best!
