Since the last Fez Sez, July 1 st has come and gone. Canada Day was a tremendous success and celebrated in two major parades in Airdrie and Canmore Banff. I can only comment on Airdrie but the crowds were terrific, 10 deep in places with a great ovation from the public. We do make a difference and our participation in communities like Airdrie, Canmore and Banff is appreciated more than we sometimes think. Thank you to all units and clubs for your participation. It was our day to be noticed with appreciation shown by all. Everyone came out a winner, it was a great tribute to both Temples and the hospitality shown by the Red Deer Shrine Club was tremendous. My personal thanks to Noble Ken Wigmore and Lady Jo-Anne. The Temple Pig Roast then rose from the ashes and hosted by the Air Corps. I didn’t think they could better last year’s event but I was wrong. The meal was fantastic with a great turnout, my appreciation to Noble Ron Down and the many volunteers who made the day special. Parades in both Strathmore and Nanton followed by Lobsterfest 2015. Great day, excellent food and the Lobster Pot Degree ended the day with a few laughs thrown in. Special thanks to Evan Schmitke and Rob Sceviour for hosting a great event. Then onto Butte Montana for the PNSA. My appreciation to all units attending PNSA. The Air Corp, Mounted Patrol and Oriental Band were all successful in the competitions with a first place in the three wheeler for the Air Corps, first place by the Band in the trio and the small band category. The Al Azhar Mounted Patrol was recognized as the parade favorite and recipient of the “People’s Choice Award”. Congratulations to all. The dedication and opening of the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Montreal came next. Initially they were expecting 500 in attendance, 2200 were welcomed by dignitaries. A great turnout and the Hospital was incredible. Spacious, open, warm and inviting for all those little people. We have a room named after Al Azhar. The pride we all felt on our guided tour, certainly a feeling of accomplishment. I was also pleased and proud to attend the Dedication Ceremony of the Daughters of the Nile. They are our biggest contributor, surpassing four million in donations.

FROM YOUR POTENTATE Dear Nobles and Ladies,

It seems every time I look at the calendar I wonder where the time has gone. Since the last Fez Sez, July 1st has come and gone. Stampede Parade came next and as usual we seemed to wait forever before starting. A little disappointed on the coverage by Global, seems as though they went to advertising as we passed the reviewing stand. Imperial Session in Houston followed and we all weathered the warm temperatures down south. Imperial Sir Dale Stauss became our new Hospital Chairman and Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt occupied the office as our Imperial Potentate. This year Al Azhar hosted the Canadian Breakfast and had over 200 in attendance. Silver Calgary Stampede Buckles were presented to both Imperial Sir’s Dale Stauss and Jerry Gantt who were present. Certainly a great event and thank you to all Al Azhar Shriners who graciously stepped up to help. Of note, and during the session delegates approved a per capita increase of $15. It will be fully explained at our forthcoming stated business meeting on September 24th.

Our half time show at McMahon Stadium followed. Seven valued minutes where we became the centre of attraction. I sometimes think we are the world’s best kept secret, events such as this creates that recognition and builds on who we are. Community parades followed in Medicine Hat and Lacombe. In the words of Al Shamal “we kicked their butts” … 9 units to 5 with three blocks of Shrine Units participating. It was our day to be noticed with appreciation shown by all. Everyone came out a winner, it was a great tribute to both Temples and the hospitality shown by the Red Deer Shrine Club was tremendous. My personal thanks to Noble Ken Wigmore and Lady Jo-Anne. Great day, excellent food and the Lobster Pot Degree ended the day with a few laughs thrown in. Special thanks to Evan Schmitke and Rob Sceviour for hosting a great event. Then onto Butte Montana for the PNSA. My appreciation to all units attending PNSA. The Divan are continuing with improvements to the Temple. Lighting remains a priority on the main floor and our furnishing are changing. A different set-up in the main foyer, bulletin board, photographs etc. Have a look at the changes in the Oasis Room over the next while. Noble Eric Skagen will be instrumental in these changes. We have also structured new guidelines covering rentals of the Temple for all Shrine Units, Daughters of the Nile and all concordant bodies. Pricing will be standard with no exceptions. We have also reviewed our policy and pricing covering our Campground. Change to both will be introduced at our next Stated Business Meeting.

I thank everyone for your continuing support.

Yours in the Faith, Ill Sir. Bob Newman, Potentate.

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS

Nobles and Ladies:

Fall is just around the corner. Been a busy summer. Parades, Imperial, Montana Shrine Bowl, PNSA, Half Time Show and the dedication of the new hospital in Montreal.

Just a friendly reminder to check your dues card. If yours is for 2013, you are at risk of being suspended for non-payment of dues. Shriners International has switched to new membership software that tracks dues status. If a member has not paid their 2014 and 2015 dues by year-end, the new software automatically generates a suspension. While it is preferred you keep your dues completely up to date, please pay your 2014 dues to avoid suspension.

Speaking of dues … at this year’s Imperial Session, the delegates approved a per capita increase of $15. Since the per capita assessment is separate from Al Azhar’s fraternal assessment ($150), the increase will likely have to borne by all Al Azhar members. The per capita increase will be explained and discussed at our September Stated Business Meeting.

This Fall, Shriners International will start bulk mailing 2016 dues notices and dues cards directly to members in Canada and the U.S. (The 2016 dues card will be a plastic card. In subsequent years, a dues sticker will be mailed to you.) The bulk mailing of dues notices and dues cards will save Al Azhar and other Shrine Temples postage since the cost of the bulk mailings will be borne by Shriners International.

It is worth noting that I and other Divan members have not seen very many Society meeting notices or minutes. The Divan are automatically Directors of any Al Azhar Society and no spending of Society funds is legit unless confirmed by the Divan. The easiest way to keep the Divan “in the loop” is to send Society meeting notices and meeting minutes to the Recorder.

I have noticed there has been an increase in the number of vehicles using the lower road by the lower ballroom as a parking lot. The lower road is a fire lane and is to be used for loading/unloading only. Fines for parking in a fire lane can be pretty hefty.

Hope to see a good turn-out of Nobles and their Ladies at the Joint Ceremonial.

Yours in the Faith Brian Shimmons, PP, Recorder

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

The ten greatest words in the English language are “If it is to be, it is up to me”. The leaders in this world realize that they have control & choices in their own lives over factors which are key to their personal success. I have always lived my life by making choices like looking at a stop light. In making a choice, I analyze it and if it fits the criteria of a “green” light, I do it. If on the other hand it looks like a bad choice I view it as a “red” light, I don’t do it. There are some choices in your life that are a balance of “red” or “green” lights. These choices I weigh out carefully. Usually it will balance out one way or the other. However, if it remains “yellow” I always ere on the side of caution and choose to stop like I would for a “red” light. I think this is why I have had a happy and successful life and it always hasn’t been smooth but I have accepted responsibility for the choices I have made. I don’t blame anyone else. In the Shrine, there may be situations where you would perhaps like to see a change for the better or how a particular situation could be approached differently that would make it easier to happen. Then go ahead and help make the change occur. By being a leader, others will follow and the results could be spectacular but you have to show initiative in what you believe. A good example would be by volunteering to be on the executive of your unit or even joining the line on the Divan. In making a choice, there is always the responsibility for the choices you make. Winners always take responsibility for their choices. That is why “If it is to be, it is up to you”. In the light of Grace Noble R. Dean Cowan Chaplain 2015 PS: It is not too late to volunteer for the Shriner’s PGA tournament in Las Vegas. This occurs in late October and further details can be obtained from Ill. Sir Gordon Brewer. I am going to be there!

Successful Shrine Lobsterfest for 2015

We surpassed the numbers from the previous year with over 115 people attending the Lobsterfest event on August 9th at the Shrine Center

Thanks to Evan Schmitke, Rob Sceviour and the past Tin’s Presidents for hosting a great Lobsterfest. The lobsters were cooked to perfection and enjoyed by all who attended.

Festivities started around two in the afternoon with Karl Frazer, Evan and Rob tending to the boiling pots for the cooking of the Lobsters. Karl became a master Lobster boiler for the afternoon. Several of the Nobles wives were helping with preparing the meal as well. Thanks to Joni Schmitke and Lisa Sceviour for assisting people to get at the lobster meat with a true Newfoundland fashion.

After an enjoyable meal of Lobster and Steak, the Lobster Pot degree was given to all those who wished to see. This was a very special degree and administered in true fashion to four people who willing tasted some great fine refreshments and appetizers. We hope all enjoyed and had a laugh. Thanks to Beth Long, Dave Mospany, Myrna Sheppard and Frances Graham for being such good sports.

Thanks to Nobles Rob Martin, Hendry Retzlaff, George Lister and George Garbutt for participating in the degree. Special thanks to George Lister for writing the words and making it entertaining. Thanks also to Joni Schmitke for making the degree certificates.

Thanks also to all the people who helped at the bar, door and the 50/50 draw. We look forward to increasing the numbers next year and having this as an annual event at the Shrine center.

Great fun and fellowship for all the Nobles, Ladies and the children who attended!

Thanks, Ernie Hilland, High Priest and Prophet

We would also like to thank those members of the Mystic Travellers for their participation of the social event at the Rosebud Theater. We had a great day and raised a $50.00 donation by selling scotch eggs. Thanks everyone.

Two confirmed bachelors were sitting and talking. Their conversation drifted from politics to cooking. "I got a cookbook once," said the first, "but I could never do anything with it." "Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?" asked the second. "You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way - 'Take a clean dish and...'

Rockymountain Holsteins In the Spring of 2013 the Al Azhar Shriners Sabre Motor Patrol was asked if they would like to cater a Luncheon for Rockymountain Holsteins at their Animal dispersal Auction Sale. Rockymountain Holsteins is operated by 3 partners; Dr. David Chalack, Glenn Hockley and Doug Blair. They have a Ranch manager – Ron Churchill. They offered that the Sabres would retain any profits from the Sale of Food items during the sale from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They also offered to Donate a Live animal or Live Embryos which would be Auctioned off and the proceeds would go to the Shriners Canadian Hospital. The way the auction worked was the Animal was auctioned off up to $3,000.00 and the Bidder would then donate it back to the auction and it was bid up another $3,000.00 and again this bidder would donate it back to the auction and it was bid up another $3,000.00 or to whatever amount the bidders would pay. This has been the Sabre Motor Patrols’ 4th year of being involved with Rockymountain and we have been able to Donate over $55,000.00 to the Shriners Hospital plus the Sabres have retained monies for their operation from the Food Sales. This has been a very generous donation to the Shriners and the Hospitals. At the Sale in July of 2015 a Thank you Presentation was made to the 3 Partners and the Ranch Manager. Calgary Stampeders Half Time Show

On Monday August 13, 2015, the Al Azhar Shriners participated in the half time show during a football game between the Stampeders and the Toronto Argonauts. Al Azhar was very well represented by the Potentate, Ill. Sir Robert Newman, members of the Divan and participating units, the Vintage Cars, Air Corps, Shrine Patrol, Tin Lizzies, Oriental Band and the Sabre Patrol. The professional appearance of the units and the musical performance of the Oriental Band were second to none. The reception afforded to Al Azhar by the fans in attendance was very much appreciated by all of the Shriners. As Marshal of Al Azhar, and one of the organizers of this event, I personally would like to thank everyone who participated for your dedication and co-operation. Everyone who attended represented Al Azhar as true Shriners. There is no doubt that public events such as this one can only benefit Al Azhar and Shriners International. Once again thanks to everyone for a great event. Noble Andy Pokolinski Marshal, Al Azhar 2015

Dear Nobles, We are proud to announce that Shriners Hospitals for Children®

was part of a team that made medical history earlier this month. Chief of Staff, Scott Kozin, M.D. and Dan Zlotolow, M.D. from Shriners Hospitals for Children – Philadelphia were part of a multidisciplinary medical team that performed the first-ever bilateral hand transplant by successfully transplanting donor hands and forearms onto eight-year-old Zion Harvey. When Zion was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Dr. Kozin and colleagues quickly recognized that Zion was a potential candidate for this transformative procedure, making him the first patient to receive a pediatric hand transplant in the world. In keeping with Shriners Hospitals’ collaborative approach to care, Dr. Kozin worked together with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania to assemble a 40+ team of medical experts to perform this complex and demanding 12 hour procedure. Zion is a bright and precocious eight-year-old who has told his doctors that he cannot wait to someday throw a football and climb on the monkey bars. Shriners Hospitals looks forward to continuing our support in Zion’s recovery and goals. Today’s announcement is a true testament to Shriners Hospitals for Children’s commitment to innovative, world-class pediatric care. Join us in celebrating being a part of history in the making. Yours in the Faith, Jerry Gantt Imperial Potentate, Shriners International. (Article from The Inquirer – Marnie McCullough Inquirer Staff Writer Wednesday July 28th, 2015) Sitting on his bed at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the first child in the work to receive a double hand transplant talked about his big plans. Zion Harvey, 8, of Baltimore, wants to climb the monkey bars. Throw a football. Play the guitar. Maybe even become a doctor. “But I’ll be the kind that doesn’t give shots,” he said with an impish grin Monday. On Tuesday afternoon, a team from Children’s and the University of Pennsylvania announced its early –July surgical tour de force, then introduced Zion; his mom, Pattie Ray; stepdad Kevon Gant; and little sister Zoe. “The planning took approximately 18 months,” said transplant team leader L. Scott Levin, who established Penn’s hand-transplant program and expanded it to Children’s. “For those of you who are familiar with the book about Apollo 13, Failure Is Not an Option, that’s how our team approached this transplant.” No child had ever received a transplant of a single hand, let alone two. Only about 60 people worldwide – including Penn’s first case, a young woman, in 2011 – have undergone upper extremity transplants since the first on in France in 1998, according to the international registry.

These complex “composite” tissue transplants – which involve reattaching blood vessels, bones, nerves, muscles, and skin – remain rare because, unlike major organ replacements, they are not lifesaving. Yet patients must take immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent rejection, raising their risks of infection, some cancers and other side effects. Zion was uniquely suitable because he was already taking antirejection drugs to protect his kidney transplant. The backstory: At age 2, a life-threatening bloodstream infection required the amputation of his hands and fee and ruined his kidneys. At age 4, after two years of dialysis, he received a kidney from his mother. About two years ago, she took him to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia, which specializes in caring for kids with prosthetics like those he wears on his lower legs. There she learned about Penn’s hand-transplant program. “The doctor at Shriners thought Zion would be a perfect candidate,” recalled his mother, a nursing student at Baltimore Community College. (She declined to discuss where Zion was treated for the life-threatening infection, but public records show litigation involving Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and others.) Zion’s precocious self-awareness and resilience also impressed the transplant team. On a documentary video made by the team, Zion says of his stumps: “I wasn’t always like this. When I was 2, I had to get my hands cut off.” Of school, the second grader says: “I think some of my classmates don’t mean to say mean things to me, but it just slips out. Everybody has their own way of thinking about things.” Anticipating the transplant, he says: “When I get these hands, I will be proud of what hands I get. And if it gets messed up… I don’t care because I have my Family.” His mother says he took the transplant surgery in stride. “This is just another Hurdle that je jumps. He’s so amazing.” Levin, the transplant leader, called Zion “one of the most remarkable youngsters I’ve ever met.” “His maturity is way beyond his age, as is his insight and sensitivity,” Levin said. “He’s brilliant, not just smart. And his stoicism has been remarkable. I’ve never seen him cry, complain of plain or be withdrawn.” In April, Zion was put on a waiting list for hands, to be obtained through Gift of Life, the region’s organ and tissue transplant network. Zion and his family were warned that the wait might be a year or two. Federal organ-sharing data showed that only a tiny number of children of the appropriate race, age and sex become donors each year. But just three months after he was listed, Zion underwent the 11-hour surgery, an overnight marathon involving two dozen surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists. The process required four separate surgical teams, two for the done hands and two for Zion Steal plats and screws were used to connect the forearm bones, then the arteries and veins were sewn using thread thinner than a human hair. With blood flow re-established, each muscle and tendon was reattached, followed by the nerves. How does Zion feel about the donor? “Mixed emotions.” He said of the loss that made his gain possible. Zion faces many months of physical rehabilitation. While in the hospital, he has been fitted with a series of custom-molded plastic splints that protect his writs and fingers, while allowing therapists to help him learn to use his new hands. “By September, the splint will be less bulky and cumbersome, and his wrists should be free.” Said Children’s occupational therapist Kelly Ferry. Sensation is another issue. The nerve regeneration that restores feeling can take up to two years. Meanwhile, the hands will grow with him, as the growth plates produce new bone and tissue. Already, Ray noticed, his fingernails need clipping. Zion seems up for the challenges. On Monday, he shook hands, scratched his face, held a book with help from his mother, all while being interviewed. Does he have a favorite caregiver at Children’s? “I like everybody,” he said. Montana Shrine Bowl was Fantastic!

On July 17th, 16 Al Azhar Nobles and Ladies converged on Great Falls, Montana to attend the East West Montana Shrine Bowl and the associated events. Again this year, two Calgary high school football players were invited to play … one on the East side and the other on the West side. The Shrine Bowl events started with the Players Appreciation Banquet in the Great Falls Civic Centre on the Friday evening. The banquet was sold out again this year and Al Azhar’s presence was noticed by those in attendance. On Saturday morning, the clubs and units of Algeria, Bagdad and Al Bedoo put on a parade in downtown Great Falls. Following the parade was an indoor tailgate party hosted by Algeria Shriners. At game time, there were about 4,000 fans in the stands at Great Falls High School. Those in attendance were treated to a close game. Ultimately, the East squad won 19-14. Both Calgary players, Colton Hunchak on the West squad and Brendan Barnes on the East squad, played extremely well and made on impact on the field. Next year’s game will be held on July 19 in Butte, Montana. All proceeds from the game go to Shriners Hospitals Children - Spokane

AL AZHAR MOUNTED PATROL

The Mounted Patrol was busy over the spring and summer with ride practices, parades and of course our famous Wednesday Night Suppers. Friends and Family joined Warren and Irene Nelson on May 23, 2015 at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club in honour of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations Warren and Irene. On June 21, 2015 the AMP held their annual Mother’s/Father’s Day BBQ at the Club House. A delicious steak dinner with all the trimmings was enjoyed by all. The AMP attended parades this year at, High River, Airdrie, Crossfield, Stampede, and are looking forward to riding in the Cochrane Parade. This year the Mounted Patrol was happy to make donations to the following organizations: 878 Banff/Canmore Air Cadet Squadron, Scottish Rite Learning Center, Calgary Veteran’s Food Bank and the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club. The donations were really appreciated by all the recipients. Several members of the AMP attended the 2015 Pacific Northwest Shrine Association in Butte, MT. No competition of Horse Patrols was held this year, but the AMP put on a demonstration ride which was enjoyed by all who came out to watch their performance. Six riders rode in the Parade and were happy to learn that they had won First Place in Parade. The AMP also received the “People’s Choice Award” which was quite an honour. The Bagdad Nobility really appreciated the AMP Nobles trucking their horses all that way to participate, and reiterated this in their speech at the awards presentation. Congratulations Nobles!!!! The AMP Members are in the process of “sprucing up” the Club House. The ceiling has been painted, and a new floor is being installed. Other minor repairs are also being done. We hope all the Nobles and Ladies had a safe and happy summer. Noble Roy Jardine

AL AZHAR SHRINE PATROL

Another busy summer season will conclude with the Labor Day parade in Cochrane. Our parades have been well attended by unit members and Al Azhar as well represented by the Shrine Patrol throughout the summer events which included the Calgary Stampeders half time show. The Stampede Breakfasts were a great success once again, thank you to our ladies and friends for your excellent support. It was a busy and hard week of cooking and serving but the efforts of everyone were very much appreciated. Our Annual BBQ after the Nanton parade was another success. To Rosie and Leigh McNeill, thank you from the members of the Patrol for your work and your hospitality in putting together this annual event. The Patrol would like to welcome two new members from the last group of cold sands Shriners, Noble Larry Carr and Lady Ann as well as Noble Julio de Gusman and Lady Jhonalyn. Noble Julio had his first Segway riding experience with the Patrol at the Calgary Stampede parade and managed to survive with no incidents. Congratulations Julio. If there are any more Shriners interested in joining the Patrol please feel free to contact any member or come out to one of our Monday practices, which start after the Labor Day weekend, to find out what the Patrol is about. Information can also be obtained from our Club Runner website – Club Runner Al Azhar Shrine Patrol. The month of August will see the opening of the new Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children. The Patrol would like to wish the Montreal Hospital and its’ staff every success on this wonderful occasion. The annual Breakfast with Santa for children will be held on Sunday the 6th of December 2015 at the Shrine Centre. Notices will be mailed out to all members of Al Azhar by Pat and Cinde. On a sad note, the Patrol lost another long-time member in Noble Brock Baker. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Noble Andy Pokolinski, Captain Al Azhar Shrine Patrol 2015

AIR CORPS

By the time you read this excerpt we will be close to going to Cochrane to wrap up the Parade Season. The Air Corps had lots of fun this summer starting in Airdrie July 1, Stampede Parade July 3, followed by the two breakfasts we attend at the Hull Services and Kids Day at the Grounds where we got the Mayor into one of the lanes.

The Air Corps Pig Roast was well attended by approximately 250 people. Special thanks to all who helped as there were many who gave their time freely, you know who you are.

We went to Strathmore on August 1st followed by Nanton on the Monday.

PNSA was a ball, and the Air Corps won 2 first place plaques. We managed to get the two Imperial Officers that were in attendance at PNSA in the planes. Next Year is Billings and I hope Al Azhar has more participants.

With summer almost done only parade left is Cochrane then leaf raking begins. The summers go so fast and the fellowship is always so much fun.
