Shaikh Muhammad Nasir-ud-deen Al-Albaanithe famous Muhaddith* and Faqeeh* of our centuryfound over 5,000 "Weak, Spurious

and Fabricated Hadeeths"that "Islam absolves" todayA brief biography of the Shaikh

Muhammad Nasir-ud-deen, better known as ShaikhAl-Albaani, was son of a famous scholar Al-Hajj Nooh IbnAadam Najaatee. He was recognized by the people of

knowledge as a learned *Muhaddith (scholar of Hadeeth)and a *Faqeeh (scholar of Fiqh) of our century. Shaikh Al-

Albaani was born in 1332 A.H. (C.E. 1914). At the age of86, in 1420 A.H. (C.E. 1999) he passed away from thisworld. His loss is being felt by many respected Muslimleaders and scholars. Some of his admirers were the ChiefMuftee of Saudi Arabia - Shaikh 'Abdul-'Azeez Ibn'Abdillaah; the former Muftee of Saudi Arabia - ShaikhMuhammad Ibn Ibraheem; Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Saalih;Shaikh 'Abdullah Ibn Jibreen and others. One of hisrepeatedly printed book on the Fiqh is 'Tahdheer-us-Saajid min Ittikhaadh al-Quboor Masaajid' (Warning theWorshippers against taking graves as a Place of Worship).

His two books on Hadeeths 'Selselatu AlahadeethAlsaheha' (chain of authentic hadeeths) and 'Shelsalat Alahadeeth Aldaeefah' (chain of weak hadeeths) areregarded as the excellent reference books on the subject.These volumes were produced by late Al-Albaani aftergoing through the large amount of Hadith books andverifying the authenticated chains of narrations forthousands of Hadeeths and their indexes. Shaikh Al-Albaani was in charge of the teaching of the subject ofMustalalhahul Hadeeth (the science of Hadeeth) for threeyears at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.

One of his better students is Dr. Imam Muzammil Siddiquiof Southern California, who spoke to me very highly of histeacher Al-Albaani, at the recent ISNA Conference (2001)in Vancouver, B.C.The following text refutes the criticisms that claim ShaikhAl-Albaani was only a self-taught man without authority

and proves his Proficiency in Ahadith:

[1] Shaykh Al-Albani has Ijaza in hadith from the late Allamah

Shaykh Muhammad Raghib at-Tabaagh with whom he studied

hadith sciences, gaining authority to transmit from him. The Shaykhhimself refers to this Ijaza in Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.72) and in

Tahdir as-Sajid (p.63). He has a further Ijaza from Shaykh Bahjatul

Baitaa (through whom his isnad stretches back to Imam Ahmad).

These are mentioned in the book Hayat Al-Albani (the Life of Al-

Albani) by Muhammad ash-Shaibaani. This sort of Ijaza is given

only to those who have excelled in hadith and can be trusted to

accurately convey a hadith. A copy of the Ijaza is in the possession of

his student, Ali Hassan al-Halabi. So it is not correct to say that the

Shaykh is self-taught from books, without authority and without

It is self-evident after this that I say:

The Sunnah which has an important bearing on IslamicLaw is only the Sunnah confirmed by scientific channels,and authentic chains of narration's known to the learnedin regard to hadeeths and the background of thenarrators.

Tafseers (commentaries of The Qur'an) and Islamicjurisprudence (fiqh), and in different writings of longing,intimidation, advices, and admonitions, etc...

They contain weak, spurious, and fabricated hadeeths, ofwhich Islam absolves, like the story of 'Harut and Marut,'and the story of 'gharanik.' I have a special letter whichmakes it void and it is printed (6). A major part of it isrecorded in two huge books namely "A chain of weak andfabricated hadeeths and their evil impact on thecommunity." Their number upto date have reachedapproximately four thousand hadeeths (7).

It is obligatory on the learned, especially those whospread the knowledge of fiqh and legal opinions among

the public, that they shouldn't dare to argue with hadeethunless it is well-attested. Books of jurisprudence, whichthey refer to, are normally filled with traditions which arenot well-attested, nor have any bases, as is well-known tothe learned.

I have begun an important project, and I think it will be ofuse to those occupied with jurisprudence, and I will nameit: "Weak and Fabricated Hadeeths in the MajorJurisprudence 'fiqh' Books," by which I mean:

1. Al-Hidayah, by Al-Marghinani, in Hanafi fiqh,2. Al-Modawwanah, by Ibnil-Qasim, in Maliki fiqh,3. Sharhul-wajeez, by Al-rafiee, in Shafiee fiqh,4. Al-Mughni, by Ibn Quddamah, in Hanbali fiqh, and5. Bidayatul Mujtahid, by Ibn Rushd-al-Andalusi, in

comparative fiqh.

I regret that I did not get the opportunity to finish it,because the journal "Al-Wa'e-al-Islami" of Kuwait whichpromised to publish it, when perused it, didn't print it.

Although I missed this opportunity, perhaps I will succeedon another occasion, Allah willing, to offer to mybretheren occupied with jurisprudence a precise learnedcourse to help them to facilitate their knowledge of thedifferent categories of hadeeth with reference to varioussources from books on hadeeth, with an explanation of itsspecial nature and character and reliance on them. Unfortunately however, statements will continue to be attributed to the

Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) although the personquoting them may have no idea what the people of knowledge of Hadith haveruled regarding those ahadith, thus ironically being in danger of contravening

the Prophet's widely-narrated stern warnings about attributing incorrect/unsound statements to him. For example, here are some very commonly-

quoted ahadith, which actually vary tremendously in their degree ofauthenticity from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace):
