CD. Our newsletter editor, Francine Dufour Jones included a “how to” article on digital slide prep in our December newsletter which is ar- chived at our on line community site. So submission to this year’s juried show should be easier than ever. We kicked off the new year with Ruth Glenn, the Program Director for Arts in Education for the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Ruth had plenty of tips for artists who are in- terested in working with children throughout the state. Her program is dedicated to providing quality ex- periences in the visual, performing and Native arts for students and their teachers in the school setting. There is a good deal of flexibility built into the program. Artists can submit their names and be matched with schools requesting an artist, or they can re- quest a school and submit a proposal for a project. This would allow art- ists to provide an art experience in their neighborhood schools. Ruth explained the application process and fielded lots of questions from our group. We also held the art garage sale. The results did not come close to last year’s lively affair but it gave people a chance to move materials to new owners for the benefit of the Schol- arship fund. Finally, the prospectus for the AKWS is in this issue and is on line at AKWS.org. Here is your opportu- nity to put your talents to work. Need some inspiration? Never quite sure what a juror is looking for? The award winners for the last five years are archived on our website. Stroll through the winner files and give it some thought. Do your best and send it in. We are no longer requiring slides of submitted work. We kicked off the new year with Ruth Glenn, the Program Director for Arts in Education for the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Our Next Meeting: Diann Haist “Chasing the Muse Across a Continent” Diann will talk about her background and 40 year career as a full time artist. She will discuss how mov-ing from Toronto, Canada to Alaska ten years has influenced her art. “Since 1969, when I began my career as profes-sional artist, my work has been through some changes - oil paint was replaced by acrylics, real-ism was abandoned for musically inspired abstrac-tions. In 1989 however, I realized my first love was truly oil painting in the impressionist style - it just seemed natural. Plein air painting once again be-came my addiction, as well as painting interesting people. Since moving to Alaska from Canada in 1999, there has been no shortage of either land-scape or figurative subjects, and every day is a new inspiration.
I am not afraid of colour and my brushwork has been described as bold and confident - this is what I want viewers of my work to see, that there is some passion there, no apologies, nothing timid. What I strive for is portraying the life force of my subjects as well as my work being aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Requirements for each of the memberships offered by
the Alaska Watercolor Society are as follows:
Associate Membership in AKWS will be unlimited and open to anyone interested in watermedia. This position of membership may not vote and may not participate in exhibitions designed for Signature members only. An-nual dues $20; payable May 1st.
Juried Membership in AKWS is open to any artist who has had a painting exhibited in at least one AKWS juried show. This position of membership may not vote and may not participate in exhibitions for Signature mem-bers only. Juried membership is revoked if dues are not current and the application process must be re-peated. Annual dues $20; payable May 1st.
Signature Membership in AKWS is open to any artist who has had a painting exhibited in two AKWS juried shows and one other juried watermedia exhibition. This position of membership may vote, participate in Signa-ture member exhibitions, and use the initials AKWS when signing their name. Signature membership is re-voked if dues are not current and the applicatio proc-ess must be repeated. Annual dues $25; payable May 1st.
Student Membership in AKWS enjoys the same status as Associate members. Student is defined as attending col-lege full time, i.e. course load of a minimum of 12 hours. Annual dues $5; payable May 1st.
NOTE: With respect to Signature and Juried member-ships, written verification shall be required as proof of acceptance into juried shows and must be submitted to the membership chair. Juried shows from January 2000 to present shall be accepted.
Welcome Matte by Julie Rearick, Membership Chair
Linda A. Doll, AWS, NWS, is a painter, digital pho-tographer, graphic artist, instructor and juror. She has been active on the Boards of the Na-tional Watercolor Society, American Water-color Society and Watercolor West. Ms. Doll teaches drawing, painting and photography workshops throughout North America, Europe and the South Pacific. Her figure and still life paintings and drawings are included in many books and have been featured on several magazine covers. Linda is included in Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who of American Women. Ms. Doll lives in San Diego, California. Sue Zajac’s Art Show
MIXX Grill and Bar inside the Inlet Tower building on L St. is the location of Sue Zajac's new show for February and March of 2010 "Optic Active" (try saying that three times) is the title of her show. Sue's desire to create order from random marbling designs is illustrated in her many framed works of collage. The eye does not settle on one object in these framed pieces. Be prepared for much optical activity. "Optic Active" opens on Feb. 5th. Please come join us for this opening First Friday event. Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Enjoy the re-freshments, live music, and plenty of parking at Inlet Tower.
