Plenary:

The anatomy of a viral video (video and video narratives)

In this session, I would like to deconstruct a well-known viral video and look at it from aneducator’s perspective. We will explore the different ways in which young people interact with videos – both online and off – and consider possibilities for language teachers who make use of video and video tools in their classrooms. Throughout the talk, we will see that any viral video will find itself caught in a web of diverse and dynamic narratives, an appreciation of which is key to developing media literacy.

Jamie Keddie is a teacher, teacher trainer, writer and presenter based in Barcelona. He is the founder of Lessonstream, the site that was formerly known as TEFLclips, winner of a British Council ELTons award. His publications include Images and Bringing Online Video into the Classroom, both published by Oxford University Press. As well as visual materials, Jamie is interested in storytelling-based teaching approaches.

Motivation: What really drives learning?

What motivates your learners? And what demotivates them? Is it our job to motivate them? Or just not to demotivate them? What surprising new findings have emerged recently about motivation? How can these be applied to language learning? How do teaching materials encourage learner motivation? And finally … are you motivated to consider answers to these questions?

Johanna Stirling is a UK-based teacher, teacher trainer, writer and presenter. She is the author of Teaching Spelling to English Language Learners which won a Special Commendation in the British Council Award for ELT Writing and has been nominated for an ELTon Award for Innovation in Teacher Resources. She has also written teaching materials for Cambridge University Press and worked on software editing too. This has included work on face2face, Touchstone, English Unlimited and Cambridge English Teacher. She has been A Cambridge Product Champion since 2006.

The teacher as a storyteller

It is often teachers of young learners who are the quickest to embrace teacher-led storytelling as a way of engaging students and structuring lessons. But we are considering a classroom craft which is far too valuable and versatile to be associated exclusively with one group alone. In this session, I would like to share a number of teacher-led storytelling skills, activities and devices which will be suitable for all types of language teachers and learners.

Where did I put my keys?

Remembering new language is one of the many challenges a student has to face. Although much class energy is spent teaching new language, making sure students keep it in their memories is something which is often neglected. We will explore the reasons why learners forget, then discuss the ways in which teachers can help students with different learning styles store and remember new language.

How many words do you cover in an academic year with your students? How many of these do they retain and actively use? The session will provide some practical ideas and activities to help your learners engage and remember more.

I’ve been working for IH since 2005. I worked in China and Poland before I moved to the Czech Republic. I started teacher training at Akcent IH Prague. I spent a year working for IH Hanoi as an Academic Manager before I returned to Prague. I’m a CELTA, CELTA YL extension and IH CYLT tutor. I also tutor on IH World’s online courses.

Error correction/feedback/in Speaking

So when do you correct? And do you correct? What if they can´t use present progressive when describing pictures? And many other questions. We will be looking at different situations when a teacher corrects or doesn´t correct, with some practical tips.

Grammar And Vocabulary

The teachers will be introduced to both simple and more complicated aspects of English grammar and vocabulary with the focus on unusual and tricky features which our students are not usually familiar with. Teachers will try carrying out some fun activities with confusing English grammar and vocabulary items as well as dealing with up-to-date abbreviations used within computer and social communication.

Picture it - Using pictures to promote communication and to enhance students’ speaking skills

In this session we will dust off a number of my old favourite activities in which pictures are used to practise speaking as a skill. We will take a closer look at the speaking subskills and strategies involved and the ways each of the activities helps our students express themselves in English and to build their confidence when speaking.

Jitka Urbanová works at AKCENT International House Prague as a Director of Studies, a teacher, and a teacher trainer. Her experience includes teaching English to adults and young learners in the Czech Republic and overseas. She also enjoys working with teachers as part of the teacher training programme offered at AKCENT IH Prague. She has a degree from the Faculty of Education in Prague, and in 2001 she passed DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

The Same Boat: Multiculturalism in Today’s ELT

Culture and language are intertwined, and we as teachers approach language from the perspective of our own backgrounds. And so do our students. As today’s classrooms become more and more diverse, and the reach of English becomes more and more widespread, it is important for us to try to do everything we can to enable our students to interact with the world around them. Yet we seldom consider culture from a pedagogical perspective. We will look at five dimensions of multicultural education used in top American universities, and how we can apply those ideas to the language learning environment.

Derek DeWitt has been an EFL teacher since 1994, most of that time here in the Czech Republic. He currently works for AKCENT IH Prague, where he received his DELTA certificate.

If so you are not alone.We will look at what problems students have with writing and what you can do to help them get over those problems. Bring a pen!

I am an English teacher and a teacher trainer on CELTA, Delta Modules and Business English courses. I’ve worked mainly in the Czech Republic, in Prague and Brno, but also in Lithuania and the UK since 1996. Now working on an MA in Applied Linguistics.

Can exam classes never be fun?

When teaching exam prep classes, there is a lot of focus on specific exam tasks – and teenagers soon get bored with it. How can we make these classes more interesting, so that students don’t get bored with the course halfway through? In this workshop we will look at different activities that can make an exam class more interesting and still develop the skills our students need for the exam.

Judith has been teaching for 7 years. Before joining AKCENT IH Prague in September 2016 she taught in Russia, China, Germany and England.

Talented students in English classroom – joy or annoyance?

At the time when inclusion is being implemented in our schools, some teachers might find it challenging or even impossible to engage every single student in their English classroom. This workshop aims to provide some strategies for working with gifted (or simply ‘stronger’) students more effectively. We will look at how to identify those students and how to use their abilities to the fullest by adapting tasks and/or incorporating more challenging and stimulating activities.

Jana entered ESL world after she finished her CELTA in 2007. Since then, she has gained valuable experience in teaching adults and especially young learners of a variety of levels and ages at Akcent IH Prague, which she joined in 2008, as well as in the UK while teaching at summer schools last three summers. She finished her DELTA in 2012 and she currently works a DoS and an IHCYLT tutor.

Spice up your ESP lesson

During the workshop teachers will be introduced to and practice several activities that can be used to spice up a lesson of English for specific purposes and engage students with a bit of fun. The common topic of the workshop is IT; however the activities can be adapted to different subjects and languages.

Václav studied English and French at the Faculty of Arts in Prague (FF UK). Although his studies centred mainly around translation and interpreting, he has always found a great interest in teaching languages. Since his graduation in 2014, he has focused his efforts on introducing new, modern and innovative techniques to foreign language classes.

Teaching smoothly

Our lessons are full of engaging teaching activities and materials from multiple sources but the outcomes of our work are not always wholly satisfactory. This session will focus on the teacher’s role in the language classroom and how we can teach lessons where students can really follow and know what they are doing and why. This can be achieved with the help of simple classroom management techniques such as signposting, structuring and pacing, which will be considered in more detail during the session and illustrated with practical examples. Teaching smoothly is using class time effectively.

Dana has more than 25 years experience of teaching English. She is a teacher trainer on Cambridge DELTA Modules, CELTA and TKT courses and an oral examiner for Cambridge exams. She also trains Czech English teachers on a BA programme at AKCENT College s.r.o. in Prague.

Math Showers

Equations, aka First ConditionalPlane structures, aka PrepositionsFractions, aka Task-Based LessonThe workshop will engage participants in simple Mathematics activities adapted specifically to suit language teaching/learning. We will show teaching strategies stemming from constructivist approach in Mathematics and we will exploit the potential of some mathematical audiovisuals. We will offer several CLIL-based activities to challenge and motivate the learners, and to promote sources of information the learners could use outside the English classroom.

Lenka Procházková teaches English and Math at Lauder Schools of Prague and pursues a PhD at Faculty of Education, focusing on CLIL materials in Mathematics. She prepared and led CLIL teacher training in Cascina, Italy, and worked as a soft-skills trainer for IAESTE Prague. She is the co-designer and tutor of CLIL courses at the Faculty of Education.

The idea of primacy of process and conditions over language is something that has always resonated with me. We don’t need to spend long in a YL classroom to work out that the one most conducive to learning, is one which considers the aptitude and development of its learners.Yadda yadda yadda Yes, we all know we should make the process fun, active and engaging. But how can we ensure real ‘learning’ is happening? Is there an elephant in your classroom? There will definitely be one in my session. Come and see it!

Kylie Malinowska is a Young Learner Trainer and IH CYLT (YL Training) Coordinator at Akcent, where she has been based for the last 11 years. She is also the YL Advisor & IH CYLT Coordinator for the International House World Organisation. As a trainer, teacher, writer, and mum of twin preschoolers with a passion for sharing all things YL, especially V(ery)YL, she’s kept very busy and is a coffee addict. She has a regular YL Column in the IH Journal of Education and Development, and is the co-author of the forthcoming ‘Pre-Primary English Language Teaching’’ by DELTA publishing.

Sobrevivencia o supervivencia (no solo) en el aula de ELE

Todos nos vemos a veces en la situación en que la memoria nos traiciona y no podemos acordarnos de una expresión que necesitamos usar de inmediato, por ejemplo, para comprar una prenda de vestir o decirle al médico de cuál problema padecemos y qué medicina nos falta... En todos los casos, no hay ningún diccionario disponible y el traductor del móvil no conoce la palabra o aconseja una tontería. Entonces ¿qué hacer? Lo mismo que en un naufragio en una isla desierta, necesitaremos un kit de supervivencia... En este taller, intentaremos pensar en cómo crear un «kit» de sobrevivencia lingüística, en el mundo hispano.

Dana Gajdová es profesora de español e inglés de la región de Moravia noreste, ahora autónoma, con la experiencia de 24 años de la enseñanza secundaria y universitaria, entre ellas reciéntemente destacan la academia de idiomas Big Ben en Ibiza y el PORG de Ostrava. Ha colaborado con varias casas editoriales, es autora de un manual para el bachillerato de español e intenta publicar otros títulos usando la metodología divertida y original.

Estados y acciones: un paso más en la diferencia ser/estar

El uso de los verbos ser y estar es uno de los mayores problemas para los estudiantes checos de español de todos los niveles. Durante la ponencia trabajaremos el uso de estos dos verbos con participio para expresar acciones finalizadas y acciones en curso (voz pasiva). El seminario terminará con una parte práctica.

Improvisación teatral en la clase de lengua, de A1 a C2

Técnicas de improvisación teatral adaptadas a la clase de lengua (no solo español). Con estas ideas prácticas, los alumnos van a aprender de forma divertida, ya que todo lo que aprendemos con una sonrisa lo recordamos mejor. Aprender de forma guiada es muy bueno, pero cuando hablamos estamos contínuamente improvisando. Con estas técnicas los alumnos tendrán que improvisar. Algunas son más guiadas que otras, pero todas comparten el elemento de la improvisación. Los alumnos tendrán (y querrán) implicarse en las actividades.

Diploma de Profesor de Español para extranjeros, International House Barcelona. He trabajado en diferentes escuelas de Barcelona: Enforex, Speakeasy, C2 Languages, BCN Metropol... Actualmente vivo en Praga, donde doy clases en Akcent, eSko y Glossa, así como por Skype. En 2013 creé mi canal de YouTube, Sergi Martin Spanish, donde publico regularmente vídeos con lecciones de español.

Vers la compétence communicative avec la vidéo authentique

Conçu comme un atelier pratique, le séminaire se concentrera sur le développement de la compétence communicative à travers la vidéo. L’atelier présentera des ressources pédagogiques et des activités facilement envisageables en classe de FLE. On abordera ensemble de nombreuses activités avec la vidéo authentique qui nous permet de découvrir les thèmes « classiques » sous un nouvel angle et ainsi motiver les étudiants. A la fin, on touchera aussi les productions « maison » qui sont de plus en plus en vogue avec Youtube et autres plateformes de partage de contenus vidéo.

Tereza Vogeltanzová est déléguée pédagogique chez les Éditions Fraus. Elle a fait ses études d’anglais et français à l’Université de Bohême du Sud. Après avoir enseigné pour une dizaine d’années, elle s’est associée avec l’équipe Fraus en 2015. Dans le cadre de son travail, elle est responsable marketing et déléguée pédagogique qui anime regulièrement les formations profs sur les pratiques de classe.

Exercices de drill simples et amusants en classe de FLE

En classe de FLE, on ne saurait se passer d’exercices de drill audio-oraux. L’objectif de mon atelier sera de présenter aux participants quelques principes ludiques (jeu de dés, questionnaire, imagiers, touché-coulé, jeu de voyance, jeu de fleuriste, Tic-Tac Boum) facilitant la création et la mise en œuvre communicative de ce type d’exercices. L’avantage de ces techniques est leur adaptabilité à différents points de grammaire et aux différents niveaux du CECR.

Olga Smolova a une expérience de 19 ans dans l’enseignement de FLE. Elle a travaillé pour plusieurs écoles de langues (Lingua Viva, Channel Crossings, Bohemia Institut). Actuellement, elle est responsable du Pôle de Russe, de Français et d’Espagnol à l’Ecole Nationale de Police de Prague. Elle est diplômée, entre autres, en philologie romane de l’Université Charles. Elle a effectué plusieurs stages de méthodologie pour professeur de FLE, notamment trois stages à l’Institut Supérieur Privé Accord à Paris.

Límportance de la motivation des adultes dans lápprentissage du FLE

Le séminaire présentera la motivation comme le moteur et láccélérateur de lápprentissage et les différents facteurs qui línfluencent. On abordera aussi le cercle vicieux du niveau faux-débutant ainsi que les difficultés dans les classes hétérogènes. Enfin on touchera aussi le rôle actuel de lénseignant dans les classes du FLE.

Titulaire dún master en philologie romane à FFUK, Martina Dudáčková a effectué plusieurs stages de méthodologie de FLE en France et en Belgique. Elle a travaillé pendant dix ans à IFTG, un centre de formation pour adultes auprès de VŠE . Actuellement elle enseigne le français et le tchèque pour Caledonian School et AKCENT IH Prague.

Česky krok za krokem

Příspěvek má za cíl představit učebnici Česky krok za krokem 1 pro úrovně A1 a A2, která vyšla v nakladatelství Akropolis v září roku 2016 v ruské a anglické mutaci (německá a ukrajinská mutace jsou plánované na rok 2017). Jde o přepracované, rozšířené a podstatně obsahově i graficky inovované vydání nejprodávanější učebnice češtiny jako cizího jazyka New Czech Step by Step/Tschechisch Schritt für Schritt. Příspěvek představuje metody a postupy, které se zde používají, a ozřejmuje posuny, ke kterým došlo oproti starší verzi učebnice. Jde zejména o komunikativnější zaměření jednotlivých lekcí, zadání i cvičení a využití originálního konceptu nových deklinačních vzorů, které tvoří modelové věty a napomáhají tak osvojení českého deklinačního systému.

Zabývá se výukou češtiny jako cizího jazyka od roku 1994. Je autorkou, respektive spoluautorkou učebnic NEW Czech Step by Step, její německé mutace Tschechisch Schritt für Schritt, cyklu učebnic Čeština expres, adaptovaných próz z edice Česká adaptována próza, dalších výukových materiálů včetně manuálů pro učitele a odborných článků zaměřených na metodiku výuky češtiny jako cizího jazyka.

Postoje nerodilých mluvčích češtiny ke spisovnosti (na příkladu ruskojazyčných uživatelů češtiny)

Otázce spisovnosti v češtině se věnuje značná pozornost jak v kontextu školní výuky a kompetencí (zpravidla hodnocených jako nedostačující) u rodilých mluvčích, tak i v kontextu nerodilých mluvčích. Na základě výzkumu ruskojazyčných mluvčích se ukazuje, čím je jejich postoj ke spisovnosti odlišný od postojů většinové společnosti a jak probíhá z tohoto hlediska akvizice češtiny. Cílem je poskytnout učitelům češtiny vhled do této problematiky a upozornit je na případná úskalí.

Po studiích na FF UK v Praze začala přednášet jazykovědnou slavistiku tamtéž, v r. 2008 byla pro obor slavistika jmenována profesorkou. Byla lektorkou češtiny na Sofijské univerzitě, pro niž napsala též Učebnici češtiny. Od r. 2008 přednáší v AKCENT College na oboru čeština jako cizí jazyk. Je členkou výboru Jazykovědného sdružení, je předsedkyní redakční rady časopisu Čeština doma a ve světě.

Aspekty vidu: slovesnost, gramatičnost a lexikálnost

Gramatické kategorie, tak jak je lingvistika často pojednává, bývají vázány na slovní druh. V tomto smyslu se o čísle, rodu, pádě mluví jako o kategoriích nominálních, osobě jako kategorii slovesné, o stupňování jako o kategorii adjektivní (adverbiální) apod. Vid je zpravidla považován za kategorii slovesnou. Navíc je kategorií, která je z hlediska výuky ale i zvládnutí češtiny kategorií velice obtížnou. Tento fakt může mít své kořeny právě v povaze jeho tzv. slovesnosti, gramatičnosti, resp. lexikálnosti. Příspěvek tyto často se samozřejmostí deklarované vlastnosti detailněji rozebere a zpochybní nebo naplní nezřejmým obsahem.

Po studiích českého jazyka, komparativní literatury či obecné lingvistiky na Univerzitě Karlově přednášel na různých univerzitách v tuzemsku i zahraničí. Je autorem několika monografií a jeho hlavním odborným zájmem jsou metodologie lingvistiky a teoretická lingvistika. V současnosti je rektorem Akcent College.
