What does it take to live to be eighty years of age? According to Bill Harkey it's having fun and staying out of trouble. This outlook on life has certainly worked well for Bill as attested to by Hoppy Toler, longtime friend of Mr. Harkey. Hoppy said, "Wherever Bill was there was usually a crowd of people having a real good time. Whether he was performing with the Attebury boys in a band called the "Sour Notes", changing a tire at his Texico station, or selling appliances for Struve Hardware." Bill Harkey was born September 9, 1925 on Crow Mountain just outside of Pottsville, Arkansas. At the age of thirteen he moved with his family to the Abernathy- New Deal area. He attended school in New Deal where he was voted the meanest boy in school. Soon after he transferred to Abernathy High School where he graduated in May 1943.

From Crow Mountain to Harkey Hill

duration of the war. He was discharged in December of 1945. At That time he returned to Abernethy and was offer a job as a butcher at Struve Grocery Store. He left the Struve's in the mid fifties to operate the Texico service station. During his career he also was one of two motorcycle policeofficerswiththecity of Lubbock for a few years and at one time drove a truck for Furr Foods . When asked if he had a hard time holding a job, Harkey replied, "there was always someone offering me a different job that paid more money and I always accepted." He said he always enjoyedentertaining people as a member of the Sour Notes band. His job was to play the guitar, sing and act as the master of ceremonies. Please remember to join Bill and all of his family as they celebrate his birthday, Sunday from 2-4pm at the Abernathy Senior Citizens Center

Letter to the Editor

On Saturday, September3r<1, at approximately 10:30 a.m., our beloved pet and longtime family friend was shot and killed . This occurred in the vicinity of Avenue G and North Drive, He could not have been mistaken for a stray with his collar and tags. If this was a deliberate act, the perpetrator is a disturbed individual who needs help. If this was somehow an accident, then I am deeply disturbed, as my son

and numerous neighborhood children ride bikes and play in this very area where our old dog was shot. I would like to thank Karen Sexton and Paul Moats for their compassion and assistance on Saturday morning, and Officer Ballard for his kind professionalism. (Yes, we filed a police report.)

Junior Class Parents Start Trek to Raise Money

''Needing old bluejeans " -clean out your closet

As tradition ha's it in Abernathy, the junior class parents and students are responsible for raising money and paying for half of the location where the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom is held and for all of the cost (OJ or band) and sponsorship of the dance. The cost of this has been a little more than S1000, Then senior parents orga-

nize, pay for and host "Casino Night" on the night of graduation. This usually has a price tag of between $4,000 and $5,000.

The Class of2007 parents have decided that they need to get started raising money, so, they can finance these activities forthekids. AnywaY you look at it, that is about S5,000 to $6,000. To kick it off, junior parents will meet on (mark your calendar) TIJESDAY,

SEPT. 13TH at 7 PM in the gym (please come in from the west parking lot). We hope all junior parents will come and bring their ideas as well as a willingness to participate. We already have a project going where we are collecting "blue jeans". So if you have any old or new jeans that you are not using, we would greatly appreciate your donation.
