FOCUS The power of the eraser. Students are encouraged to look at a mistake as being an opportunity to learn. Teachers are encouraged to focus more intently on only the concepts that are discussed in the curriculum. This is so students can reach a strong foundational knowledge and deep conceptual knowledge.

The building of a solid foundation. Students will continue to build upon those skills and concepts learned in previous years. They will concentrate on engaging in a deeper understanding of core concepts.

Extend understanding of fractions of equivalence and ordering.Understand decimal notation for fractions ,and compare decimal fractions

Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.

What does fluent mean?

Fluent in the Standards means "fast and accurate." It might also help to think of fluency as meaning the same thing as when we say that someone is fluent in a foreign language; when you're fluent, you flow. Fluent isn't halting, stumbling, or reversing oneself. Assessing fluency requires attending to issues of time.

FACTS ABOUT COLLEGE READINESS

In 2008, about 65% of SUNY Orange's freshman were required to take at least 1 remediation class, up 5% from the year before.

College remediation cost society $3.7 billion in 2006, according to the Alliance for Excellent Education. And much of that burden falls on taxpayers — for almost

a billion dollars to supplement college developmental courses.

For students, the expense is both time and money.

CAREER READINESS DEFINED

In today's economy, a "career" is not just a job. A career provides a family­sustaining wage and pathways to advancement and

requires postsecondary training or education. A job may be obtained with only a high school diploma, but offers little or no advancement or mobility. Being ready for a career means that a high school graduate has the knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in the postseconadary job training and/or education necessary for their chosen career (i.e. college, technical/vocational program, apprenticeship

or significant on­the­job training).

FACTS ABOUT CAREER READINESS

statistics & analysis, are required in many growing middle class jobs and careers

in the next decade, 80% of the fastest growing jobs will require some postsecondary education

and/or training beyond HS (associate or bachelor's degree, vocational certification, licensure, completion of an apprenticeship, significant on­the­job training, or other

credentials)

in the next decade, only 22% of job openings will be "low skilled" and accessible to those with a

HS diploma or less

traditional "blue collar" jobs (i.e. electricians, construction workers, plumbers) now require the same math skills necessary to do well in

college courses
