RBI, Select Bankers Hold Parleys
Ahead of the forthcoming bi-monthly policy meet on April 1, the Reserve Bank of India on
Tuesday met a select group of public sector and foreign banks.
However, the central bank did not term the meeting as a pre-policy meeting with the Indian
Banks Association.
The central bank usually holds the customary pre-policy discussions ahead of every monetary
policy meeting with all public, private and foreign bankers, but this time around only a few
bankers attended the meeting.
Some of the bankers present at the meeting such as Canara Bank, Indian Bank, Uco Bank and
Deutsche Bank, said issues such as non-performing assets, capital and loan growth were
discussed at the meeting.
“There was a general discussion on NPAs, restructuring, credit offtake, loan pricing and capital
issues,” said Arun Tiwari, CMD, Union Bank.
Likely to maintain status quo on rates
Hyderabad: The RBI is likely to maintain status quo on interest rates in the upcoming policy
review, according to credit rating agencies.
“Consumer inflation eased to 8.1 per cent in February, 2014 close to the target of 8 per cent for
the end of this calendar year suggested by the Urijit Patel Committee. As a result, we expect a
status quo on the policy rate in the upcoming policy review,” said Naresh Takkar, MD & CEO,
ICRA.
To curb inflation, the RBI increase the repo rate thrice by 25 basis points each since September
2013. It currently stands at 8 per cent.
“Although inflation is on the desired path now, the RBI is expected to maintain the status quo,”
said Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Care Ratings.
