10 Recent research has focused on the manner in which the Titanic sank and why she sank so quickly. The ar9cle on slide 10 may be viewed at the URL shown at right. It is authored by Jasper Copping of the Telegraph (UK) and focuses on a structural feature in the Titanic, an expansion joint, that may have failed and buckled once the ship took on significant amounts of water axer striking the iceberg.

The theory of structural design failure is elaborated at length in the book Titanic's Last Secrets: The Further Adventures of Shadow Divers John Chaherton and Richie Kohle. The book is widely available and is reviewed on Amazon.com.

What may be seen as a rival theory of structural failure focuses on the variable quality of the rivets used in construc9ng the Titanic. The New York Times published an ar9cle en9tled “In Weak Rivets, a Possible Key to Titanic’s Doom,” on April 15, 2008. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was struck down by what was believed to be polio in 1921. The photograph of FDR and a girl afflicted with polio appears on various sites on the Internet. One URL is provided at right.

10 FDR became the symbol of a massive, worldwide research effort to find a way of preven9ng the disease. FDR helped found the March of Dimes to support polio treatment and research.

Dr. Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine, introduced in 1955. A picture of Salk that appears on the cover of Time magazine is shown on slide 10. A URL of the cover is at right. A second vaccine developed by Albert Sabin was introduced in 1962.

Ironically, recent research seems to suggest that Roosevelt may have been afflicted with Guillain‐Barré syndrome rather than polio. A link to USA Today, which reports the research, is at right.

This finding is important if true, but the fact remains that FDR’s influence and image as a polio sufferer helped fuel a worldwide research effort that produced not one, but two, successful vaccines.

Mark H. Neuffer / Integer MARK H. NEUFFER, President of Integer Research & Consul9ng, LLC, has thirty years of experience in strategic planning, business process design, and informa9on technologies. He has served a wide variety of clients in industry, government, educa9on, and the nonprofit sector. His focus at Integer is on improving the effec9veness of knowledge workers and of informa9on technologies in human service and Informa9on and Referral organiza9ons.

Mr. Neuffer leads Integer’s Human Service Informa9on DeliveryTM Prac9ce. The Prac9ce’s objec9ve is to improve the acquisi9on, management, and dissemina9on of human service informa9on using contemporary technologies, par9cularly the Internet. In the hands of trained professionals and the general public, high‐quality informa9on can revolu9onize access to services, highlight emerging human service needs, and maximize service impact in both the private and public sectors.

The Prac9ce grows out of Mr. Neuffer’s research at the University of Chicago. At the University, he designed and led a three‐year project funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Founda9on to survey community resources and to develop an electronic directory of human services. The work pioneered methods of surveying, acquiring, compiling, and deploying community resource data. It also highlighted strategic opportuni9es for expanding, strengthening, connec9ng, and integra9ng the human service informa9on infrastructure across the United States.

Mr. Neuffer has conducted several major research projects at Integer, including the Ten‐City ScanTM

(2008), a review of human service informa9on delivery prac9ces in America’s ten largest ci9es. He has collaborated with the Chicago Community Trust, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the Alliance of Informa9on and Referral Systems (AIRS) in work related to human service informa9on delivery.
