Fulton Hogan is Australia’s largest and most experienced provider of runway, taxiway and apron construction, upgrade and maintenance services at international, domestic and regional airports and defence facilities across the country.

Construction of these assets, often in an operational environment, is one of the most demanding and challenging of all construction activities. Our 30-plus years experience in this sector has given us a full understanding of customer requirements:

- Stringent quality control of material production and laying.

- Intensive program and supply chain management to meet demanding time constraints.

- Working in potentially hazardous environments, both in terms of safety and risk management.

As one of the most experienced airport civil works providers in Australia, New Zealand the Pacific Islands, Fulton Hogan has the people, equipment, management systems and financial stability to offer the broadest range of tailor-made solutions for airport owners and operators:

- Construction of runways, taxiways, aprons and standing areas to ACN-PCN strength classification ratings.

- Civil engineering activities associated with runway construction, including earthworks, drainage and structures.

- Facilitating construction of buildings, including terminals and hangars.

- Resheeting of runways, taxiways, aprons and standing areas.

- Runway widening and flank treatments.

- Ancillary services such as linemarking, electrical works and drainage.

- Maintenance, including re-linemarking, rejuvenation, crack sealing and rubber removal.

- Friction testing to CASA requirements.

We also appreciate the requirement for many airports to continue operating during construction and upgrade works. Thanks to rigorous planning and on-site management, we have an excellent record in meeting the day-to-day time demands of our clients.

It’s little wonder that over the years Fulton Hogan has won numerous awards and accolades from the airport industry and is considered by many operators and owners to be Australasia’s number one airport pavement contractor.

Fulton Hogan‘s operations continue to grow in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. To overcome the constraint of limited access and restricted manoeuvrability, a teleconveyor was used to transport concrete to the work face at Perth Airport .

Client: Westralia Airport Corporation.

Scope: Fulton Hogan reconstructed a concrete apron holding three parking

bays. This involved demolition of the existing pavement, earthworks and the

reconstruction of a lean-mix concrete sub-base and a concrete base.

Contract value: $1.6 million.

The works were performed in a very constrained area in three stages, with

each stage being completed and returned to service prior to commencing the

next.

Due to limited access and the restricted ability to manoeuvre concrete trucks

at the site, a teleconveyor was used to transport concrete to the work face.

This technique had not previously been used on an airport paving project and

extensive trials were carried out prior to commencement of the main works.

As the project’s summer timing raised potential difficulties with maintaining

acceptable low-plastic concrete temperatures, Fulton Hogan’s technical

staff worked with the concrete supplier to incorporate ice into the mix in

lieu of water. Aggregates were also shaded to ensure the plastic concrete

temperatures remained within accepted limits on hotter days.

All three stages of the project were completed on or ahead of time.

Client: Adelaide Airport Limited.

Scope: Fulton Hogan applied an asphalt overlay to the two runways

and many of the taxiways. Also included was the installation of over

600 new LED centreline light fittings, believed to be the largest single

Airfield LED installation ever undertaken in Australia.

Contract value: $23 million.

Fulton Hogan was engaged 10 months prior to construction

commencement to provide specialist constructability advice in the

design finalisation and construction planning.

Through this involvement, we added significant value to the project

outcomes by incorporating a number of cost-saving and risk-reducing

opportunities as well as maximising the Method of Working Plan.

The project involved establishing an on-site mobile asphalt plant,

profiling the existing surface, placing 57,000 tonnes of asphalt overlay,

linemarking, regrading runway flanks, managing lighting upgrades

and grooving 200,000 square metres of runway.

The majority of works were performed between 11pm and 6am,

allowing the pavements to be returned to early-morning service.

The project was completed eight shifts ahead of schedule and to the

highest quality.

Adelaide International Airport

Fulton Hogan was engaged 10 months prior to construction to provide specialist constructability advice in the design finalisation and construction planning.

Client: Asia Pacific Airports (Melbourne).

Scope: Fulton Hogan performed various airport pavement upgrades

at Melbourne Airport in 2010 and 2011, including the asphalt overlay

of two runways, significant concrete reconstruction of another runway,

flank and shoulder maintenance, and major lighting upgrades.

Contract value: $31 million.

Fulton Hogan’s project team worked closely with the client to manage

runway availability and allow alternate work to continue when areas

were unavailable due to weather or operational constraints.

A significant site compound was established, including a high-capacity

mobile asphalt plant and a concrete staging yard. Over the combined

projects, 47,000 tonnes of asphalt was supplied and laid, as well as

2700 cubic metres of concrete.

Fulton Hogan’s in-house National Airports Team worked closely with

the designer to improve the proposed methods of trench construction

and reinstatement for new in-pavement lighting.

A significant full-depth pavement repair was performed and returned

to operation in just eight hours. This involved a 500mm-deep concrete

pavement reconstruction as well as the installation of subsurface

drainage at one of the airport’s busiest intersections.

Despite Melbourne’s worst weather in 30 years, the ability of the

project team to utilise additional resources to accelerate the works

meant that the completion date was only delayed by one month.

The project was completed to a high standard, and free of LTIs and

operational incidents.
