Embraer projects 530 new deliveries of 70 to 130-seat jets in Africa and the Middle East over the next 20 Years

Embraer Commercial Aviation forecasts that airlines in Africa and the Middle East will take delivery of 530 new jets in the 70 to 130-seat segment over the next 20 years (valued at $25bn at list prices), representing 8% of the worldwide demand for the seg-ment in the period. It is estimated that 65% of the total new deliveries will be added to support market demand growth while 35% will replace ageing retiring aircraft.

Forecasts indicate that 17 of the world’s top 30 fastest growing countries in 2014 will be in the regiwon. Air transport in Africa and the Middle East will steadily grow 5.3% and 7.1% per annum over the next 20 years, respectively - above the world average of 4.8% -, more than tripling the air traffic to, from, and within the region.

“The 70 to 130-seat jets will play a key role to sup-port the intra-regional de-velopment in Africa and the Middle East, not only for its ability to explore new mar-kets, but also because of the possibility to improve load factors with greater flexibility,” said Paulo Cesar Silva, president & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “E-Jets are the most efficient, reliable and comfortable aircraft in this category and are perfectly suited for the air-lines needs in the region by providing the benefit of significantly lower trip costs.”

Currently, 60% of the larger single aisle jet flight departures among African and Mid-dle Eastern destinations have up to 110 passengers on-board on average, resulting in low load factors. The region is mostly composed by low- and mid-density markets. Some 88% of all markets have demand densities of up to 300 passengers daily each way, and approximately 50% of them are not served nonstop. Embraer E-Jets provide the capability to develop a better traffic feed system and greater network connectiv-ity, as well as improving the quality of services on existing markets where there is not enough demand to support larger single aisle aircraft operations.

The E-Jets family has logged nearly 1,500 orders and over 1,000 deliveries to date. The aircraft are in service with some 65 customers from 45 countries. In Africa and the Middle East, Embraer has more than a 75% market share among aircraft in its segment. Nearly 70 E-Jets are currently in service with seven operators from six countries in the region.

Gevo reaches agreement with Lufthansa to evaluate ATJ fuel for com-mercial aviation

Gevo, the only commercial producer of renewable isobutanol, came to an agreement with Lufthansa to evaluate Gevo’s renewable jet fuel with the goal of approving Gevo’s alcohol-to-jet fuel (ATJ) for commercial aviation use. Lufthansa’s testing is being supported through work with the European Commission. “By using isobutanol as a renewable raw material for producing jet fuel, the resulting jet fuel has the mixtures of molecules typical of petro-based jet fuel making it directly compatible with engines and infrastructure. Renewable jet embodies the potential of cleaner, greener, and as we scale up, cost competi-tive drop-in fuels,” said Patrick Gruber, Gevo’s chief executive officer. “We greatly appreciate Lufthansa’s and the European Commission’s support of this effort. Through initiatives like this, the commercial airlines are seeking to prove out ATJ and move it towards com-mercialization. ATJ from Gevo’s isobutanol is a clean burning, homegrown, drop-in jet fuel, and we have a potential route to deliver aviation biofuels at scale and at competitive cost.”

The African Business Aviation Association(AfBAA) announced a Memo of Understand-ing with the Commercial Aviation Associa-tion of South Africa (CAASA). The purpose of the agreement is to ensure that both par-ties provide continued support to each others’ ongoing promotion of Business Aviation as an efficient and safe mode of transport across the continent of Africa. The announcement of the agreement took place during day one of the inaugural AfBAA Expo event, Africa’s first dedicated business aviation exhibition, taking place at the Marrakech FRA Airport, 23 – 26 April 2014. This is the first time AfBAA has formed an alliance with a commercial aviation association and exemplifies its commitment to its original primary objective of promoting the understanding and benefits that Business Avia-tion provides for the continent’s economic de-velopment and prosperity. The unique agree-ment will enable both parties to maximise the opportunities presented by jointly advocating for, raising awareness of, and supporting the aviation sector, through collaboration on a va-riety of projects, events and ideas which will take advantage of the collective knowledge of their individual members.

Vector Aerospace UK, a provider of aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) serv-ices, selected Atkins Global as a collaborative partner in producing a Safety Management System (SMS) which will enhance the support of its operating processes. “We are looking to optimise and widen our current practices to ensure that we have a single, flexible and appropriate approach to Safety Management across all areas and locations of our business”, said Chris Hosking, Quality director at Vector Aerospace. “We see SMS as something more fundamental to the way we operate than mere compliance; it is integral to how we work and correlates with the company’s core values in terms of the responsible behaviours and cul-ture which we have historically cultivated”. The SMS will build upon the company’s successful pre-existing strategies, such as its ‘Quality & Safety 1st’ campaign, which have helped to place health & safety, airworthiness and flight safety at the centre of all that it does.

ARGUS International announced a new global strategic partnership with T3 Private Jets Asia (T3). One of the greatest advan-tages of this relationship is how it will greatly increase the efficiency and timeliness of pro-viding world-class audits and aviation services in Asia. This regional partnership will provide an exponentially better audit experience for mutual customers in the region. “ARGUS has been working in the Asian market for quite some time and realized that a strategic part-ner in the region would foster even greater, more efficient access to our proven aviation solutions,” said Joe Moeggenberg, president and CEO of ARGUS. This approach is fresh and the partnership underscores ARGUS In-ternational’s commitment to mutual Asian clients and T3’s ability to deliver these services and products to Asia, at significantly reduced costs by utilizing resources already in the re-gion. ARGUS and T3 have formed a pact to develop Asian resources and deliver the high-est quality services and products offered in line with international standards, for which both companies are well known to uphold.
