Canoeing on Painkalac Creek
Discover the AireysInlet Cliff Walk...Experience one of the most dramatic
seaside walks along the Victorian
coast. Winding along the top of tall
limestone cliffs and through delightful
areas of native plants, the Cliff Walk
provides you with breath-taking views
of rugged coastline, ocean scenery,
secluded beaches and tidal rock
pools.
1 Painkalac Creek to Split Point
Lighthouse 400 metres
The walk starts at the estuary at the base ofthe sand dunes and the colourful limestonecliffs. The walking track begins near the toiletsat the foot of the steeply rising land. It issignposted Cliff Walk Extension.
Two hundred metres along the track you willarrive at Loutit Bay Lookout, with views of theOtway Ranges and Fairhaven, Eastern View,Lorne and beyond.Continuing along you willpass the grave of Thomas Pearse and his wife,Martha, who were early pioneers of thedistrict. The adjacent slate roof house wasoriginally the residence of the head lighthousekeeper.Since 1935 it has been privatelyowned.
A further 100 metres on brings you to thelighthouse. The lighthouse, made of concrete, began operating on September 1, 1891. It wasa kerosene light, maintained by the lighthousekeepers, until 1919 when it was converted toautomatic acetylene operation. In 1972, it wasswitched over to mains electricity with astandby generator. A bank of batteriesreplaced the generator in 1998.
2 Split Point Circuit Track 300 metresThis short sidewalk includes two viewingpoints overlooking Eagle Rock and Table Rock.Other points along the track also provideamazing views along the southern coast.Thisarea of the walk has excellent examples oflocal flora and is a favourite haunt of RufousBristlebirds.
3 Lighthouse to Step Beach 300 metres
Leaving the lighthouse, follow the road pastthe former lighthouse keepers cottages andthe kiosk and gallery. This building formerlyserved as the lighthouse stables and includeda single-mans quarters.
Past the junction with Lighthouse Road youwill come to a viewing point overlooking StepBeach. This lookout provides fantastic viewsover the rock platforms, rock pools and cliffs.
Horseshoe Rock,in particular, should beclearly identifiable at low tide.At the end ofthe gravel road it is possible to get down tothe beach and rocks via a zig-zag set of steps.
4 Step Beach to Sandy Gully
1000 metres
This gently undulating section of the walk hasan impressive number of indigenous floraspecies. The lookout at Lands End is thehighest point on the Cliff Walk.It providesexcellent views of the rock platforms below. On a clear day views across to theMornington Peninsula are possible.
Sandy Gully Beach is popular with locals andholiday residents.Access to the beach is viasteps on each side of the gully.
5 Sandy Gully to the Fitzpatrick Seat
400 metres
After crossing Sandy Gully, past the beachaccess steps, you will find a cliff-edgeprotective fence at a spot that provides agood south-westerly view of the beach, cliffs, lighthouse and Eagle Rock. The track thenwinds up to Reef Lookout, which alsoprovides excellent views back along the cliffsto the lighthouse.Out to sea, to the north-east, you will sometimes see the white waterof Eagle Nest Reef,a submerged off-shorereef of some danger to passing yachts but ofconsiderable interest to snorkellers.Fitzpatrick Seat is on a somewhat bareheadland that enables a clear view to thenorth-east toward Point Roadknight and PointAddis.
6 Fitzpatrick Seat to
Sunnymead Lookout 1000 metres
The track closely follows the cliffs for about200 metres and then enters an area ofrelatively pure and diverse indigenous coastalvegetation.
At the north-east end of the car park isSunnymead Lookout overlooking SunnymeadBeach and foreshore areas.
It is possible to return along the walk via thebeach and rock platform, provided you havechecked the tide is low for the next hour orso. The rocks and tide can be a bit tricky pastSandy Gully and you are advised to return tothe Cliff Walk via the steps.
Extreme caution is recommended when
walking along cliff-lined beaches.Please be
aware of unstable cliffs and rising tides.
