Notes:
This spreadsheet is to calculate the length of the aircraftarrester cable on an aircraft carrier to successfully stop alanding plane.
To do so we have to calculate the integral of the functionf(x)=0.17x^2+20x.
The integral is the area of a region under a curve.By breaking the region into thin vertical slabs we approximatethis area. (The thinner the slabs are the more accurate resultwe get.)
To stop the plane the cumulative area, in other words thework done by the cable has to equal or to be more than thekinetic energy of the landing plane.For calculating the kinetic energy (KE=0.5mV^2) we need toconsider not only the speed of the plane and the ship buttheir direction as well as the wind`s.
