Acrylics Painting Using acrylic paints in an airbrush is actually quite common in the arts-and-crafts fields. Noted artist, author and airbrush instructor Robert Paschal uses the HP-C Plus, coupled with a Power Jet compressor, for creating illusions of shadows, adding highlights and creating special effects. Since acrylic paints are heavy-bodied by nature, they need to be thinned a bit before spraying, and typically require an airbrush with larger tip/needle combinations. When working on small areas, the Eclipse gravity-feed ( HP-CS, HP-BS) and side-feed ( HP-SBS) brushes are great for details, while the bottom- feed HP-BC Plus, HP-BE and Eclipse HP-BCS are ideal when doing background work or when larger volumes of paint are required. They can be thinned easily to a sprayable consistency. They dry quickly so you can work fast. They are flexible and have good adhesion. And they work well on raw, gessoed or prepared canvases. Acrylic colors are waterproof, permanent and will not fade. When spraying acrylics for small, detailed areas, I recommend the gravity-feed HP-C Plus. It delivers the soft granular spray required for creating the illusion of objects floating in space. I recommend the gravity-feed Iwata HP-C Plus to achieve these effects because the softer the spray, the better the illusion. "Iwata has specialized and multi-purpose airbrushes for all of my endeavors in the world of beauty. For fingernail art, I use several brushes in Iwata's High Performance Plus Series because of their ability to use minimal air pressure and small amounts of paint for small, detailed work.

The HP-A Plus is great for fine detail close-up work, the HP-B Plus is a great general purpose nail art brush and the HP-C Plus is the best choice when working with heavier paints or when mixing your own colors."

Airbrushing Watercolors

Watercolors are one of the most natural mediums for use with an airbrush because it's a transparent media and airbrushes apply colors in a transparent fashion. Respected artist, lecturer and avid golfer Kirk Lybecker says, "Airbrushes are often used to enhance places where watercolors are weak like in washes."

Lybecker, who often works with watercolors, prefers the Custom Micron CM-SB and CM-B because of their phenomenal control and powers them with a quiet Shark compressor. Lybecker sometimes uses a CM-C for slightly larger areas and an RG-3 mini spray gun for blocking in larger background areas.

Casual airbrush users painting with watercolors may prefer the gravity-feed HP-C Plus or HP-B Plus, which allow for spraying at low air pressures to maximize coverage and minimize over-spray. Both of these airbrushes work extremely well with the Smart Jet or Power Jet compressors.

"Using an airbrush in a watercolor painting is a natural marriage. Watercolors are thin and flow easily even through the finest of airbrushes.

If you are tired of drab washes, enhance your washes with the use of an airbrush to fortify the color, such as getting deeper blues in the sky. You can also accentuate details like picking out smaller shadows.

And, most importantly, you can build layered colors so that you can get the depth and intensity of an oil painting with watercolors.

I use Iwata Custom Micron airbrushes because they are a perfect blend of the capacity to do extremely fine details and subtle blending, and for their easy cleaning and maintenance.

The low air-pressure use allows me to do a lot of work without having to use frisket film or similar masking mediums.

The RG-3 mini Spray Gun gives me excellent control for large sprays, allowing for even, subtle background sprays."

Custom automotive graphics

Individualism and creative expression turn the vehicles of today, cycle tanks and custom auto painting into works of art. Artist, author and instructor Craig Fraser of Kal Concepts is at the forefront of this creative movement that's rapidly growing in popularity. The Hi-Line HP-CH is the workhorse of his studio, while the CM-C Plus allows for the greatest details.

The side-feed Eclipse HP-SBS (Autographics version) is quickly becoming a mainstay in the field because of its 1 oz. side-mounted cup, which allows for greater vision of the work since you can see directly over the nozzle. The Power Jet and Shark compressors lend themselves well to casual workloads.

Iwata's arsenal of various Spray Guns rounds out the offerings for this type of work. Fraser is also the designer of the haunting Skull Master, Son of Skull Master, Curse of Skull Master, Return of Skull Master, Flame-O-Rama, Patriotica and Kustom FX Freehand Airbrush Templates from Artool.

Though I've tried many brands of airbrushes in the last 10 years, I can truly say I haven?t found a brush that can rival the accuracy and durability of my Iwatas. Whether I'm painting with automotive urethanes or my water-based Com-Art Colors, the Hi-Line HP-CH is the workhorse of my studio. Not only does it deliver consistent fine lines and details that I demand, it also maintains that consistency for many years.

I've always been impressed with the Custom Micron for the incredible detail work it allows me to do. The Autographics side-feed and top-feed models of the Eclipse series allow for added versatility and work great with solvent-based urethanes and toners.

At Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate, we have been using the LPH Automotive Spray Guns successfully for the past six years. Iwata is the rare company with a complete line of guns and airbrushes where every model is a winner. Whether you need razor-sharp detailed illustration or full-tilt custom automotive spraying, Iwata's arsenal has the gun for every job."

Models and Resin Figure

The resurgence of plastic-model-kit has created a need for new advances in airbrush technology.

No more slapping on paint with a brush when realism is the ultimate goal. An Iwata-airbrushed finish lends the realism hobbyists demand.

Master model makers find that they prefer the finest details and often use the CM-C and even the HP-SB Plus in their work.

Subtle shading and weathering are common uses for these two airbrushes, especially when powered by the Sprint Jet, Smart Jet or Power Jet compressor. Advanced users want the flexibility of a Hammerhead Shark compressor in their studios.

"Scale models come in polystyrene, resin, vinyl and/or metal. They also come in all sizes and subjects and each have something to offer. The finest finishes are best accomplished with the help of a good, reliable airbrush. The Iwata line has a great airbrush for every modeling need, skill level and budget.

Iwata products work well with a variety of mediums. I like acrylics for their user and environmentally friendly chemistry. Com-Art transparent and opaque paints are great for effects and shading like weathering and flesh tones. Iwata airbrushes can deliver the same great performance with enamels and lacquers, too. I like the quick clean-up between colors with gravity-feed designs and the small amount of paint that can be used. After all, it's not the paint job, it's the touch up that makes a kit come to life.

The affordable Revolution CR fits the bill for basecoats, simple schemes and basic stencil work. An Eclipse HP-CS is my choice for most other modeling applications because of its greater control and versatility. When it's time for some fine detail, crisper lines without masking and work with smaller scale subjects, I use an HP-C Plus."

Illustration Art

Page 6: Airbrush Use

Illustrations are typically commercial and designed for eventual reproduction.

These artistic renderings are often done on illustration board, paper or similar substrates, most likely using thin paint, inks or dyes.

An illustrator like Michael Cacy uses the CM-B or CM-SB for the finest detail work since they perform well at extremely low air pressures.

The CM-C, HP-B Plus and HP-SB Plus can be used for detail and general rendering purposes, while the HP-C Plus is good for some detail and background coverage.

These models are all good for working on small- to medium-sized work, which is typical for illustration.

Professional illustrators often rely on powerful, yet silent compressors with air-storage tanks for consistent and uninterrupted airflow like the Power Jet and Shark compressors.

"The Eclipse CS is a dynamite airbrush for over-painting oil-based colors over the top of my illustrations. Using a rubout or pick-up technique with a kneaded eraser lifts up the oils, revealing the under painting.

This technique adds another dimension to my work. Once airbrushed on, you can control the drying time, meaning that you can start rubbing out an area almost immediately.

Also, by airbrushing you have more control because you can gauge the value ? it can be more subtle or pronounced than it would be if it were brushed over.

I use the Iwata Custom Micron for all critical work, such as precise detail. The Iwata HP-C Plus is without a doubt the best all-around illustrator's airbrush ever!"

Textile paints, like Medea Textile colors, that are used for painting T-shirts are made with heavier-bodied pigments similar to acrylics and require larger tip\needle combinations, as well as powerful air compressors.

Mark "The Shark" Rush, textile painting guru and designer of the Great White Shark compressor, prefers his fleet of 15 Iwata Eclipse BCS airbrushes and his own Great White Shark compressor. The Eclipse HP-CS proves to be a good choice for spot details and highlights.

World-renowned artist and instructor Jurek is an avid HP-BC Plus user when painting textiles.

The compressor recommended for textiles is the Shark compressor. While others may do some light duty such as home T-shirt painting, they will burn out if subjected to long hours at higher air pressures.

Medea Paints & Colors Com-Art Airbrush ColoursAll airbrush colours are not the same. Com-Art is considered to be one of the finest and most versatile professional airbrush colours in the world.

Because of a common hydro-carbon base binder, Com-Art transparent and opaque colours can be used together without bleeding between colours.

This non-toxic, ready to use paint is specifically formulated for use with an airbrush and never needs to be filtered or strained. Com-Art colours are heavily pigmented and light fast, allowing for accurate 4 colour separations. They provide superior atomization, smooth spraying, and they dry instantly.

Textile ColoursMedea Textile Colours by Jürek feature a new, more versatile formulation. This allows for

Page 16: Airbrush Use

spraying on a variety of surfaces, including leather, wood, canvas, textiles, silk and found objects. Now the improved formulation even sprays great on hard surfaces such as license plate tags, metals, plastics and more! Use Medea topcoat (waterbased polyurethane) for a final durable finish.

Their free-flowing brilliance and their non-clogging nature are due to the finest ground pigments and a special additive called the "Lube."

The "Lube" provides an exclusive wetting agent and a flow enhancer that allow four hours of hassle-free spraying. Additionally, the flow enhancer breaks down the surface tension of the paint, resulting in better fabric absorbsion (when applied to textiles) for greater washability and wear.

HOW THE COM-ART COLOURS WORK

The BrownsLight Dust can be used for very light shades of dirt or ballast, or to simulate a light coat of very fine dirt. It also can be used to make the white or off-white lettering in signs, model train cars, or armor to appear to be streaking. Lastly, it can be used to create the light overcoat that makes a tank or train car appear to be sun faded. Soft Dirt is a medium brown color that can be used to show dirt in the treads of tanks, darker or heavier layers of dirt on rolling stock or wheelsets, general dirt on structures or vehicles, and even darker fleshtones.

Soft Dirt may be combined with Opaque Raw Sienna to create a more yellow mud hue. Fertile Soil is a sable dark brown color that can be used to show dirt in the tread or on the side of tanks. It also can be used to create the splash-back of dirt on the side of a building near the ground that occurs from rain. Fertile soil can be combined with Transparent Smoke to create a dark black-brown color that is ideal for creating skid marks from vehicles.

Colours include: Dark Rust, Light Rust, Opaque Raw Sienna, Oil, Blue Gray Smoke, Smoke, Light Dust, Soft Dirt, Fertile Soil and Opaque White.

The Rusts

Dark Rust is the darkest of rust colors that would be used to create the initial streak on an older rust streak or spot. It can be mixed with Light Rust and Opaque Raw Sienna to create intermediate colors or to change the hue. Dark Rust mixed with Transparent Smoke makes a nice grimy wash to create brake dust on vehicles or as an overall grimy wash on iron oxide rolling stock. Light Rust is the lighter component of the rust spectrum. It easily creates the stains that occur from water dripping across a heavily rusted spot. Opaque Raw Sienna is a wonderful color to create the fresh, bright yellow-orange rust spots on metals. It also makes an excellent color to adjust any of the rust hues. The dirt colors also can be adjusted with the Raw Sienna to provide a more orange-yellow hue to the dirt.

The SmokesBlue-grey Smoke imitates the bluish-grey soot frequently seen on the end of cannons and guns from the black powder. It is also found on items that would have used anthracite or blue coal for energy. The soot from a steam locomotive traditionally has this blue-grey color. Additional uses include old industrial smoke stacks, roundhouses and tunnel portals, and even chimneys on structures. Transparent Smoke can be used for the standard smoke and soot on vehicles, structures and even scenery. In addition, it can be used as a base coat or a wash on figures to create the shadows in the folds of clothing or the relief on faces. Transparent Smoke also can be used to darken any of the colors in the palette. Old Oil combines yellows, browns, and blacks to create the characteristic color of old oil or dirty cup grease. It can be used on surfaces to create an oily, greasy or grungy appearance. This includes journal boxes on model train trucks or the tread mechanisms on tanks and armor. Old Oil can be lightened with Opaque White or Light Dust to create an aged concrete appearance that can be used throughout your scenery.

Opaque White is excellent to use to lighten any of the colors in the palette. It also can be used to create the illusion of streaked white lettering on armor or rolling stock. Very light layers of Opaque White can be used to fade black lettering or to sun fade vehicles with a lighter base color.

Creating Rust Streaks

Page 19: Airbrush Use

Creating Rust Streaks tend to drip downward because gravity pulls the water down. Dripping rust spots can be created by using a pin or tiny brush to place a dab of Fertile Soil on your structure or vehicle where you want the rust spot. Let it dry for a minute or so and then place a dot of dark or light rust over it. Using a dry paintbrush, stroke LIGHTLY in a downward motion over the still-wet rust color. The result is a rust spot that has dirt and rust stains running down from it.

Tips and Techniques by Leslie Eaton

Shake Well

These weathering colors are comprised of many different pigments, some heavier than others. The pigments may separate into layers in the bottle while sitting so be sure to shake the bottle well before using and periodically while using. You may want to use a soft paint brush to stir the paint from the sides and bottom of the bottle.

Experiment

These colors are designed to be intermixed to create intermediate hues allowing you to have colors that are unique to the item you are weathering. Lighter shades can be made by adding Opaque White or Light Dust. Darker shades can be achieved by adding Transparent Smoke or even Fertile Soil. Enjoy experimenting and playing with mixing the colors.

Layers

Apply your weathering using numerous light layers of color. This will allow you to achieve a greater depth of color and help you to avoid applying too much weathering. Applying layers of diff erent colors also allows you to achieve the most realistic appearance to your models.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is an airbrush?A: An airbrush is a small, air-operated tool that sprays fluid (paint, ink, dye, stain, glaze, etc.). It resembles, and is held like, a pen. It applies paint through a process known as atomization.

Q: What's atomization?A: An airbrush takes a fluid and turns it into a directed airborne mist. You can think of it as a sophisticated perfume atomizer or as a controllable spray paint can.

Q: How does an airbrush work?A: The airbrush must be attached to an air source to spray. Airbrushes have two systems that must work together to function properly. The air system provides energy for the atomization of the fluid. The fluid system delivers the paint to the tip of the airbrush to be atomized and sprayed onto a surface.

Q: What type of airbrush is best for me?A: This depends on your desired application. Most airbrush users today use single- or dual-action, internal mix airbrushes because

they offer the most control and the finest of sprays. However, single-action, external mix airbrushes are very popular for hobby and craft applications, the spraying of ceramic glazes or high viscosity materials, or where cost is a factor. (They are generally less expensive.)

Q: What is the difference between internal-mix and external-mix?A: In an internal-mix airbrush, the air and paint mix inside the paint tip. This produces a thorough atomization or mixing, which results in a very soft, fine spray pattern. In an external-mix airbrush, the air and paint mix outside the tip, producing a coarse spray pattern.

Q: Why are there different size tips for the airbrush?A: Nozzle sizes are differentiated by tenths and sometimes hundredths of millimeters. The different sizes allow for finer or coarser paint (how finely the paint pigment is ground up) while trading off between finer and coarser lines and spray patterns. The line sizes are relative within the Iwata product line. A practiced hand and deft touch can accomplish some amazing lines and effects with a .5mm nozzle on the Eclipse or Revolution series airbrushes.

Q: What types of surfaces can be worked on?A: All surfaces can be airbrushed, paper, canvas, plastic, metal, glass, wood, leather, skin, etc. The key is to insure the proper preparation of the surface prior to spraying and its compatibility with the sprayed material.

Q: What kinds of paint can I use with the airbrush?A: All paints, oils, acrylics, watercolors, automotive paints, enamels, alkyds, etc., are sprayable as long as they are thinned to a consistency, like light cream, that enables them to flow easily through the airbrush. However, if you're just learning how to paint with an airbrush consider buying airbrush ready paints „ then you can focus on improving your technique rather than worrying about whether or not your paint is going to clog the airbrush.
