Ventilation and IAQ
1. Do nothing and rely on windows and leakage to exhaust odors, contaminants and moisture.
2. Use spot fans to intermittently ventilate bathrooms.
3. Use central ventilation systems to intermittently ventilate bathrooms (and other trouble areas).
1. Do nothing and rely on windows and leakage to change air in to/out of the home.
2. Introduce fresh air into the home through a forced air system intermittently by way of a damper or HRV/ERV.
3. Introduce fresh air into the home through a forced air system continuously by way of a High Efficiency AHU with DC motor control.
Ventilation Options (spot) IAQ Options (air changes)
Ineffective (especially in tightly sealed energy efficient homes)
Ineffective (especially in tightly sealed energy efficient homes)
Loud, inefficient, multiple roof penetrations for exhaust
Intermittent provision of fresh air, inefficient, somewhat effective
Silent, efficient, effective, one roof penetration for exhaust (but still need IAQ)
Continuous removal of air from common areas (but still need bathroom exhaust)

Standalone Fans
- Multiple Exterior Penetrations - Intermittent Ventilation - Inefficient - Noisy*
*Note: There are some standalone fans imported from China that are very quiet.
Ineffective for Indoor Air Quality.

HRV Connected to HVAC System
1. Conditioned air is removed from the common areas of the home through the HVAC return.
2. The conditioned air is then used to treat the incoming fresh air which is then distributed through the home using the supply ducts.
• The bathrooms still need ventilation
• The air change is intermittent
• A separate control interlink must be added to meet ASHRAE 62.2
AHU

Continuous Ventilation with Energy Recovery Ventilator
Stale humid air is continuously removed from the bathrooms and kitchen and then used to condition
the fresh air being brought in.
The conditioned fresh air is fed back into the house.
Fresh air is brought into the HRV/ERV from outside the house
Stale air (containing odors, mold causing
moisture and VOC’s) is exhausted from the
house!

Continuous Ventilation with HRV and On Demand Boost
1. Each Bathroom has a motorized damper with a self balancing Continuous Airflow Regulator integrated in the door of the damper. This provides continuous low airflow
in accordance with ASHRAE 62.2
2. When someone flips the light switch or timer, the damper door opens and boosts the fan so that high volumes of stale air are removed from the bathroom during use.
1. ZRT in continuous ventilation mode, the
damper is closed and the pressure independent/self balancing CAR is holding a steady flow of air.
2. ZRT in demand mode, the damper is
open and a micro-switch triggers the fan to boost to high volume evacuation.
An optional 2nd Constant Airflow Regulator may be added in the neck of the ZRT to provide a maximum flow rate while in demand mode operation.

Airflow ControlThe Constant Airflow Regulator “CAR” is the simple solution to balanced airflow.
• Automatically Balances Airflow• Pressure Independent• Factory Calibrated• Easy Field Adjustable• Simple - Plug and Play Install• Maintenance Free• Controls Airflow for Exhaust, Supply & Return Ducts • Save Energy & Increase Comfort• Improve IAQ “One of the greatest
HVAC innovations ever!”

Airflow ControlThe Constant Airflow Regulator is able to hold a very consistent airflow across a broad range of air pressures.
As the air pressure increase the CAR is engineered to restrict airflow to maintain a
consistent CFM.

Makeup air systems replace the “amount” of air ventilated from a home with “fresh” air from
outdoors.
Makeup Air Solutions
The 3 most common “controlled” methodsfor introducing fresh air are: Air Inlets HRV/ERV/Fan Make-up Air Through The HVAC
ASHRAE 62.2 specifies the effective air change rate as:
Occupancy Rate (# bedrooms +1) = 7.5 cfm/person
Plus Area Rate = 1 cfm/100 sq.ft.

Air Inlets– Negative pressure created by mechanical
ventilation draws a controlled amount of fresh air into living spaces at the most beneficial locations.
Makeup Air Solutions
Compared to having air randomly leak into a
home through uncontrolled cracks Air Inlets:
– Improve Energy Efficiency
– Provide Cleaner Air (think about air coming under a door or through an attic/garage)
– Provide Greater Comfort by controlling airflow amounts

Air Inlets Should Be Used With:– Continuous exhaust ventilation systems– Radiant baseboard or floor heated spaces– Energy efficient “weatherized” buildings
Makeup Air Solutions
Air Inlets Should Not Be Used With:– Forced-air heating (unless supply & return are well balanced)
– When outside air is considered unhealthy

Heat Recovery Ventilator -Sensible heat recovery in cooler climates,60-90% Savings winter.
Makeup Air SolutionsHRV’s and ERV’s
Energy Recovery Ventilator -Total energy(enthalpy) recovery in warmer humid climates, 50-60%+ Savings year round.
HRV/ERV’s are an exceptional means for removing stale humid air from trouble areas such as bathrooms and using it to treat incoming fresh air in tightly sealed energy efficient homes.

If forced air heating is available, the FCU or AHU can provide outside makeup air through a fresh air
intake into the return duct.
Precautions
• Air is only introduced while the FCU or AHU is running.
• There is a potential of negatively impacting the performance of or damaging the forced air system.
