AIR POLLUTION
~ A FUTURE IN BLACK
WHAT IS AIR ? Air is one of the four classical elements – air, water, earth, and fire. Air is the Earth's atmosphere. It is the clear gas in which living things live
and breathe. Air is a mixture of 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon,
0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.[1][2] There is an average of about 1% water vapour.
AIR : AN ORIGIN OF LIFE Humans and Animals need the oxygen in the air to live. In the human body, the lungs give oxygen to the blood, and give
back carbon dioxide to the air. Plants need the carbon dioxide in the air to live. They give off oxygen
that humans can breathe again. Air also suspends clouds, which are water and turn into rain. All that energy from the sun would just leave instead of being held in
by the air.
THE AIR WE BREATH Our planet is becoming choked with
poisonous gases mostly from our daily activities like driving cars, warming our houses and running power stations.
The problem is worst in Latin America and Asia. In cities like Seoul and Mexico City, the air is so bad, some people wear face masks to filter the air they breathe.
In cities like Beirut and Damascus, dust storms make it even worse! And pollution doesn’t need a passport.
Pollution from factories and power stations in Europe, North America and Russia ends up in the Arctic region.
WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION ?
Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles, fumes (or smoke) or odour are introduced into the atmosphere in a way that makes it harmful to humans, animals and plant.
CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION
1.NATURAL ACTIONSNatural events that pollute the air include forest fires, volcanic eruptions, wind erosion, pollen dispersal, evaporation of organic compounds and natural radioactivity.
2.STATIONARY SOURCEA stationary source of air pollution refers to an emission source that does not move, also known as a point source.Stationary sources include factories, power plants, dry cleaners and degreasing operations.
3. AREA SOURCEArea source is used to describe many small sources of air pollution located together whose individual emissions may be below thresholds of concern, but whose collective emissions can be significant.Construction of housing developments, dry lake beds, and landfills, Residential wood burners.
4. MOBILE SOURCESA mobile source of air pollution refers to a source that is capable of moving under its own power. These includes vehicles such as cars, sport utility vehicles, and buses.
ADVERSE EFFECT OF AIR POLLUTION1. ACIDIFICATION
when an air pollutant, such as sulphuric acid combines with the water droplets that make up clouds, the water droplets become acidic, forming acid rain. When acid rain falls over an area, it can kill trees and harm animals, fish, and other wildlife.
2. EUTROPHICATIONRain can carry and deposit the Nitrogen in some pollutants on rivers and soils. This will adversely affect the nutrients in the soil and water bodies. This can result in algae growth in lakes and water bodies, and make conditions for other living organism harmful.
3. HUMAN HEALTHAir pollution is a major factor in causing humans to get ill.Tuberculosis, bronchitis, heart and chest diseases, stomach disorders, asthma and cancers can all be traced to chemicals in the air.
4. OZONE DEPLETION
Ozone exists in earth’s stratosphere and is responsible for protecting humans from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Earth’s ozone layer is depleting due to the presence of chlorofluorocarbons, hydro chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.
EFFECT OF POLLUTION IN OUR COUNTRY AND IN OUR CITY
STEPS TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL AIR POLLUTION Governments throughout the world have
already taken action against air pollution by introducing green energy. Some governments are investing in wind energy and solar energy, as well as other renewable energy, to minimize burning of fossil fuels, which cause heavy air pollution.
BUT STILL THE QUESTION RAISES ?
THE ANSWER IS :
WE
OUR INITIATIVE TO CONTROL AIR POLLUTION Encourage your family to use the bus,
train or bike when commuting. If we all do this, there will be less cars on road and less fumes.
Use energy (light, water, boiler, kettle and fire woods) wisely. This is because lots of fossil fuels are burned to generate electricity, and so if we can cut down the use, we will also cut down the amount of pollution we create.
Recycle and re-use things. This will minimize the dependence of producing new things.
