1.1 Features

Easy to install and simple to maintain

Exact control and reliable operation

The air cooled chiller is a central air conditioning unit, using air as cooling heat source and water as cooling supply medium, which can meet the air conditioning requirement of buildings around the year. The unit can be mounted outside, therefore, no need for equipment room, cooling tower and related water piping system. The entire chiller is complete with simple structure and easy application. Our chiller can be applied in different application, such as department stores, hospitals, restaurants, factories, office building and so on.

High resistance against corrosion

The cabinet is made of galvanized steel and coated to provide a high resistance. The unit can be applied under different environment conditions. The rejected heat from exchanger doesn’t bring any pollution and meets the ecology requirement.

Stepless modulation high efficiency and saving energy

As the compact structure, the unit basement bears the loads of compressor, condenser, evaporator, oil separator and the weight of all related refrigerant piping. As our standard features, units are equipped with spring absorber. No vibration is expected from our unique type of F4 single screw compressor.The condenser fan is compete with high efficiency propeller fan, direct drive with low noise.The compressor sound insulation enclosure is provided as standard to decrease the compressor’s operation noise effectively.

McQuay’s unique newest single screw compressor brings high EER. Multiple circuits design, each unit is configured with one or two compressors and each compressor is configured with an independent refrigerant system, which can meet the load requirements. The cooling capacity can be steles ranging from 12.5% to 100% by micro-processor control.

Once power supplies, water piping and water pump provided, no further equipment are needed. The chiller is fully equipped with the necessary electrical components.Our controller monitor the unit operation permanently. In case abnormity happens, the system can perform audio-video alarm and display the fault’s cause to ease the maintenance.

With most advanced electric expansion valve, the unit can control the refrigerant flow as various conditions.Chilled water leaving temperature is controlled to ±0.2 . In addition, various sensors can transmit the signals and data to the controller, so the unit components are timely checked in order to keep reliable unit operation. Multiple protections ensure the safety operation of the unit.Three-level password protection prevents non-professional personnel from errors and ensures a safety operation.The compressor start one by one, so the electric current is low to reduce the impact to electric network.

1.2 Intelligent Network Controller

Main functions

Building Management system control (optional)

ModBus/LonWorks/BACnet protocol interfaces are available to meet centralized and building auto control.

The controller integrates the experience and technology, applying McQuay air cooled heat pump since last 30 years. It is equipped with forecast logical programming software to perform the best combination of compressor and fan at higher EER. The controller can check the parameters and settings and then act accordingly to improve the energy efficiency and maximum reliability.

Multi protection,ensure unit high efficient and stable running. Unit cooling load auto adjusted based on evaporator outlet water temp. Outlet water temp controlled by PID, precision ±0.2°C.Compressor On/Off controlled according to average wear.Both Chinese and English are available.Unit operation status/temp/pressure data etc dispaly.Fault alarm and fault history display.Three-level password protection.Auto re-start after power failure (option).Timing switch on/off function (option).Building management system control (option), Modbus, LonWorks, BACnet are available.

1.3 Single Screw CompressorWith leading technology, McQuay’s semi-hermetic single screw compressor has such features as high-efficiency, saving energy, stability, quietness, few operation components and long durability.

Bearing durability

Low noise and low vibration

The single screw compressor, with excellent unique design and special gate-rotor material, and no need for metal hermetic requirement between the gate-rotor and rotors, reaches “zero-interval”. The liquid refrigerant brings more effects as hermetic, lubricant and cooling material when the compressor rotors operate. What’s more, its interval of the teeth is very little and the resistance is very low, which can improve the unit’s efficiency.

The single screw compressor is equipped with only five moving components: a screw, two gate rotors and two loading slide valve. The screw rotor outside is special treated, and the gate rotor is equipped with eleven-tooth high strength compound material.

Liquid durability and high reliability

With an equalizing compression, the single screw reduces the bearing load extending the bearing life span. The gate rotor, which is made of high flexibility synthetic material, can keep exact and minimum clearance to ensure no friction can happen, which can improve unit’s efficiency.The oil ejection and liquid ejection design to the compressor avoid the overheat gas decrease to a minimum, eliminating to decompose the oil and refrigerant, keeping the good properties of the oil and refrigerant.

The gate rotor is accessible through a removing cover plate, making an easy maintenance.

The bearing durability of the single screw compressor is up to 5 times or more, compared to twin-screw compressor.

The single screw compressor performs a complete balance load in operation, so its vibration is near to zero and its noise level reaches the minimum of the industry standard.It does not contact metal to metal in compression, which eliminates high frequency noise.Special design discharge chamber eliminates discharge noise.

Rate rotor and rotors

The system is equipped with a high efficiency oil separator up to 99.7% efficiency. This improved the reliability and one more improvement to compression operation.

With opposing and equal suction pressure at both ends of the single screw compressor chambers, there’s no high thrust load as in the twin-screw design compressor.

Gate rotor on both sides of the screw chamber compressing simultaneously completely balanced radial loading on the rotating screw, thus eliminates bearing wear. This is a sharp contrast with twin-screw designs whose bearing size is limited, due to higher loads, screw friction and unbalance load

Compressionprinciples

SuctionGas flows through the suction port into open ends of available grooves. As the screw rotates, gate-rotor teeth enter the seal grooves in sequence, refrigerant gas in chambers defined by three sides of the grooves, the compressor casing and the gate-rotor tooth surface.

CompressionVolume in each tooth chamber decreases as the screw rotates. Gas is continuously compressed until the groove leading edge passes the discharge port.

DischargeRelease of gas into the discharge chamber ends the compression cycle. Gas continues to be discharged until the gate-rotor reduces groove volume to zero. With two gate-rotors equalized on opposite sides of the screw, this process occurs twice with each screw revolution, doubling the compressor capacity of the unit.

The installation site should not be exposed to straight sunshine, and sufficient fresh air is necessary to cool the condenser. Enough clearance is needed to ensure the air circulation and service access. The unit should be installed on the base of floors or roofs which is sufficiently robust towithstandtheoperatingweightofunit.Pleaserefertothecataloguefortheoperatingweightofunit.Accessingladdershouldbeequippedwhentheunitistoohighforoperationandservicing.

BaseThe base should be strong enough to withstand the weight of running equipment. The base could be on the first floor or on the top. Refer to thenameplatetochecktheoperatingweight.Ifthebaseistoohigh,it’snotconvenienceforservicepeopletodothemaintenance.Theladdercanbeappliedifthebaseishigh.Thebaseshouldbestrongenoughtoenduretheweightoftheservicpeople.

Layout of the baseThe unit must be installed on the base that is strong enough. It’s recommended to use concrete slab as the base. Besides, don’t fix the base withthebuildingbasetogethertoescapethespreadofthenoise.

There’s installation hole on the base so that the unit can be fixed with base by screw.

When layout thebase, takecare that theunit isn’t crashedbyperson.Lock the inspectiondoor.And refer to local installation regulationdepartment.

Layout of the top buildingThe unit must be installed on the base on the top floor that is strong enough. Don’t cause any damage to the top. Ask for advice from installation engineer.Theremustbebeam,rubber,corkorotheranti-vibrationequipmentonthebasetoescapethespreadofvibration.

InstallationAnti-vibrationspringisinstalledreferringtothebasedrawing.Don’treleaseandadjustthescrewwhendotheinstallation.

Aftertheunitinstallation,thepipinginstallationbegins.It’sadvisedtofollowtheinstallationregulationsothatinstallationofhydraulicsystemisefficient. There should be no dust in the piping. All the piping should follow the local regulation and rules.

Since the bends, three-way joints and valves will affect the performance of water pump, all piping should be as straight and simple aspossible;

Itisrecommendedtoapplymanualshut-offvalveonallpipingformaintenance;

Drainingpipeshouldbeinstalledatthelowestpointofwatercircuitinordertodrainouttheevaporatorandpipeline;

Airreliefvalveshouldbeinstalledatthehighestpointofwatercircuitinordertoremovetheairfromhydraulicsystem.Thermalinsulationisnotneededfordrainingpipeandairreliefvalveforeasyservice;

Accordingtotherequirementoftheproject,thedesignofevaporatorshouldfollowtheitemsbelow:

1)Theoutletofthepumpshouldbeconnectedwiththeinletoftheevaporator.Theinletofthepumpshouldbeenteringwatertube,not evaporator

2)Amorethan25meshesstrainermustbeinstalledattheinletofevaporator.

3)Thechilledwaterpipemustbecleanedcompletelybybypass.It’sprohibitedtouseshellandtubeevaporatortocleanthepipe.

4)Itisrecommendedthatthermometerandpressuregaugebeinstalledattheinletandoutletofwaterexchangersforeasyservice.

5)Chilledwaterpipeoutdoorshouldbecoveredwithelectricheater,andwithheatinsulationtopreventfreezingordewunderlowtemperature.

6) A flow switch must be applied at the outlet of evaporator. The minimum length of straight pipeline on both sides of flow switch should be more than five times of pipe diameter.

Warning: Water flow can't be used for Switch ON/OFF. It’s a safety switch.

Makesurethepowersupplyisabundantsothattheunitcanstartunderfullload;

Makesureallthefuseandwireareallcorrectsizeandmatchedwiththeunits.Completeallthewiring;

Makesurealltheaccessoriesandcontrolpartsrunnormally.

General Before shipment a full test will be held to avoid any losses.Chiller will be delivered to the job site completely assembled and charged with refrigerant and oil.Comply with the manufacturer instructions for rigging and handling equipment.The unit will be able to start up and operate as standard at full load and outside air temperature from °C to °C with an evaporator leaving fluid temperature between °C and 15 °C.

Unit description Each chiller consists of multiple semi-hermetic rotary screw compressor, direct expansion shell & tube evaporator, air-cooled condenser section, control system and all components necessary for safety.The units will have 2 independent refrigerant circuits, and the respective electronic microprocessor will allow the starting of the compressors. Each chiller will be factory assembled on a robust base-frame made of zinc coated steel, protected by an epoxy paint.

Noise level and vibrations

Sound pressure level at 1 meter distance in free field, semispheric conditions, shall not exceed dB(A).The sound pressure levels must be rated in accordance to ISO 3744.Other types of rating are unacceptable. Vibration level should not exceed 2mm/s.

Compressors The compressors shall be field serviceable, semi-hermetic, single-screw type with one main helical rotor meshing with gate-rotor. The gate-rotor will be constructed of a carbon impregnated engineered composite material. The gate-rotor supports will be constructed of cast iron.The compressor shall be provided with an automatic spring return of capacity control valve to the minimum load position to ensure compressor starting always at minimum motor load, with minimum in-rush current.The oil injection shall be used in order to get high EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) also at any load conditions.

The compressor's oil cooling must be realized, when necessary, by liquid injection. External dedicated heat exchanger and additional piping to carry the oil from the compressor to heat exchanger and vice versa will be not accepted.The compressor shall be provided with an integrated, high efficiency, cyclonic type oil separator and with built-in oil filter.The compressor shall be direct electrical drive (2950 rpm @ 50Hz), without gear transmission between

Refrigerant system differential pressure shall provide oil flow through service replaceable, and cartridge type oil filter internal to compressor.Refrigerant system differential pressure shall provide oil injection on all moving compressor parts to correctly lubricate them.

the screw and the electrical motor.The motor's compressor shall be provided with star/delta start (D/Y) as standard.The compressor casing shall be provided with ports to realize refrigerant economizer actions. Shall be present two thermal protections realized by temperature sensors: one is to protect motor temperature and the other against high discharge gas temperature.The compressor shall be equipped with an electric oil-crankcase heater.

Regulation of cooling capacity

Each unit will have a microprocessor for the control of compressor slide valve's position.

Step unloading unacceptable because of evaporator leaving water temperature fluctuation and low compressor's efficiency at partial load.The system shall stage the unit based on the leaving evaporator water temperature that shall be controlled by a PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) loop.

Evaporator The units shall be supplied with shell and tubes counter-flow evaporator with single pass refrigerant. It will be refrigerant direct expansion type with refrigerant inside the tubes and water outside (shell side). It will include carbon steel tube sheets, with straight copper tubes internally wound for higher efficiencies, expanded on the tube plates.The external shell shall be linked with an electrical heater to prevent freezing down to -15 °C ambient temperature, commanded by a thermostat and shall be insulated with flexible, closed cell polyurethane insulation material (20mm thick). The evaporator will have 2 circuits, one for each compressor and shall be single refrigerant pass.The water connections shall be VICTAULIC type connections as standard to ensure quick mechanical disconnection between the unit and the hydraulic network.

Condenser coil The condenser coils are constructed with internally finned seamless copper tubes of a "W" shape and arranged in a staggered row pattern and mechanically expanded into lanced and rippled aluminum fins with full fin collars for higher efficiencies. The space between the fins are given by a collar that will increase the surface area in connection with the tubes, protecting them from ambient corrosion.The coils will have an integral sub cooler circuit that provides sufficient sub cooling to effectively eliminate the possibility of liquid flashing and increase the unit's efficiency of 5-7% without increasing in power absorption.The condenser coil shall be leak-tested and submitted to a pressure test with dry air.The total coil surface area will be designed in order to have an air velocity not higher than 3.05m/sec.

Condenser fans The fans used in conjunction with the condenser coils, shall be helical type with aerofoil blades for higher efficiencies and lower noise. Each fan shall be protected by a fan guard.The air discharge shall be vertical and each fan must be coupled to the electrical motor, supplied as standard to IP54 and capable to work to ambient temperatures of -40°C to +55°C.They shall have individual overload protection via a disconnect switch.

Refrigerant circuit The unit must have refrigerant circuits completely independent of each other with one compressor per circuit.Each circuit shall include: thermostatic expansion device, compressor discharge shut-off valve, a liquid line shut-off valve with charging connection, replaceable core filter-drier, sight glass with moisture indicator and insulated suction line. Suction line shut-off valve should be available as option.

The capacity control shall modulate slide valve's capacity from 100% to 25% for each compressor (from 100% down to 12,5% of full load for unit with 2 compressors). The chiller shall be capable of stable operation to a minimum of 12,5% of full load, without hot gas bypass.

Hydraulic kit options (on request)

(Available on unit from MCS 070.1 FST 022/407~MCS 120.1 FST 022/407)The hydraulic module shall be integrated in the chiller chassis without increasing its dimensions and include the following elements: centrifugal monocle water pump with three-phase motor equipped with internal over-temperature protection, safety relief valve, filling kit.The water piping shall be protected against corrosion and equipped with drain and purge plugs. The customer connections shall be Victaulic connections. The piping and the water pump shall be fully insulated to prevent condensation (pump insulation using polyurethane foam, protected by aluminum panels). Electric resistance heaters shall guarantee Frost protection down to -20°C.

Control panel

Compressor contactor sequence will be star/delta type.Power and starting controls should include fuses and contactors for each compressor motor coil and fan motors. Operating and safety controls should include energy saving control; emergency stop switch; overload protection for compressor motor; high and low pressure cutout switch (for each refrigerant circuit); anti-freeze thermostat; shut off switch for each compressor.All of the information regarding the unit will be reported on a display and with the internal built-in calendar and clock that will switch the unit ON/OFF during day time all year long.The following features and functions shall be included:

Soft load function to prevent the system from operating at full load during the chilled fluid pull down period;Password protection of critical parameters; Start-to-start and stop-to-star timers to provide minimum compressor off-time with maximum motor protection;Communication capability with a PC or remote monitoring;Discharge pressure control through intelligent cycling of condenser fans;Lead-lag selection by manual or automatically by circuit based on run hours;Double set point for glycol unit version;Scheduling via internal time clock to allow programming of a yearly start-stop schedule accommodating weekends and holidays.

Condensing pressure control

The units will be provided with an automatic control for condensing pressure, ensuring a proper condensing pressurethe. Fan speed control, allows unit's operation with very low ambient temperature down to -15°C.

Automatic compressor unloading, prevents the shutdown of the refrigerant circuit (shutdown of the unit) due to a high-pressure fault.

Unit control system should be centrally located in an electric panel (IP 54). Power and controls should be separated and operating in different compartments of the same panel.

Chilled water temperature reset, controlled from the return water temperature or through a remote 4-20 mA DC signal or external ambient temperature;
