Ernesto Orci Pastor

Dear St. Lawrence the Martyr Community, This year Christmas Day, the 25th, falls on a Sunday. It has been 5 years since this happened, back in 2011. This means that we had four full weeks, 28 days, of the Advent Season for our spiritual preparation before the Anniversary Celebration of the Birth of Jesus. How did you do in your Advent preparations? Hopefully it involved some prayer, spiritual action, or some other personal reflection on the Coming of our Lord in order to get our hearts and mind ready to celebrate our Savior Jesus’ coming into this world. He came to be with us as He is Emmanuel, “God-with-us”. The Gospel reading of last Sunday (Matthew 1:18-24) reminds us how Jesus came into this world to be born for us through the power of the Holy Spirit. In that passage, we heard the angel’s message to Joseph where he tells him “do not be afraid” but to accept God’s plan and take Mary and her child, the Son of God, into his home. This is the one, Jesus, who will “save his people from their sins”. The angel also appears to the shepherds in the fields and tells them “do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people”. This good news of great joy is the birth of Jesus the Lord, Savior of all. On Christmas we are each asked to accept this child just like Joseph was and to see it as good news of great joy that God has sent us a savior for our sins and a God-to-be-with-us in our daily lives. If we reflect on this beautiful Christmas message I am sure that our Christmas and our lives will be filled with great joy because this is a one-of-a-kind gift just for you and at the same time something we can also share with others. May your Christmas Season and the New Year be blessed and filled with the never ending joyful message of Christmas! In Christ, Fr. Ernesto Orci Pastor

The work of a sixth-century monk helped lay the groundwork for establishing December 25 as the birthdate of Jesus.

Dionysius Exiguus was born about 470 A.D. in Scythia (modern-day Romania). He moved to Rome where he was part of the Roman Curia, translating Church canons from Greek in Latin. Dionysius was highly regarded by Church officials just as Venerable Bede, and became known as the “most learned abbot of Rome.”

Dionysius is said to have developed the concept of the Christian Era, or Anno Domini (A.D.), which would impact both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. He wanted to eliminate the use of the Diocletian calendar, out of respect for the many Christians who had been martyred under the Emperor Diocletian’s reign.

In 525, Dionysius began figuring out future dates for the celebrations of Easter. Based on those calculations, he also determined that Jesus was born December 25, but he mistakenly placed the date in what turned out to be 1 A.D. Blessing the Christmas tree: What place does a Christmas tree have in a church? In 1988, the U.S. Catholic Bishops published their book, Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers. In it, they offered some guidelines as to the use of a Christmas tree in a church.

They recommended that the tree decorations be appropriate for and respectful to liturgical space.

They suggested the tree be blessed on or before Christmas during the Mass, or morning or evening prayer. After the blessing the tree is lit.

“Mira

cuanto te ama, mira cuanto me ama.
