N E W S L E T T E RFrom the PrincipalSchool Officer Day School Officer Day will be held on Wednesday, 14 June.

We celebrate School Officer Day as part of an international day of recognition – International Education Support Staff Day. This international celebration is the result of the endorsement of a resolution at the 2015 Education International (EI) World Congress to create a worldwide day recognising the significant contribution School Officers make to quality education in our schools. The day is also a time to acknowledge the important role of Services Staff in our school communities.

On Wednesday, staff at Saint Mary’s will show their appreciation and recognition of school support staff with a morning tea. Join educators across Queensland at #CareersThatMatter, as we celebrate our dedicated school officers and services staff this School Officer Day!

Beauty and the Beast ProductionAll the best to the students and staff involved in our school production of Beauty and the Beast this week. They have put so much effort into rehearsals and staging. It is sure to be a wonderful show! Opening night is on Friday 16th June, with a second show being held on Saturday evening on the 17th June. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, they are available via the College Office or on the QKr app.

Learning Walks and TalksOne of the High Yield Strategies utilised across all Brisbane Catholic Education schools are Learning Walks and Talks (LWTs).

LWTs are 3-5 minute walks through classrooms where leaders (or others) engage students in the following 5 questions:

• What are you learning?• How are you going?• How do you know?• How can you improve?• Where do you go for help?

Amongst other things, our Learning Walks and Talks help us to:• Understand and reflect on classroom practice• Build a common language amongst staff and students• Ask teachers reflective questions about their practice• Ask students questions about how they take responsibility for their learning• Define the ongoing support that our learning leaders can provide to teachers and students

This week, we will be visited by our Area Supervisor, Mr Peter Stower, who will join us in a LWT through several classrooms. These opportunities provide us with an invaluable insight into the learning and teaching happening at Saint Mary’s. You might also consider using the 5 questions to ask your own children about their learning.

Head of Primary NewsConfirmation 2017A big thank you to Father Stephen Camiolo, Bishop Brian Finnigan and to Miss Greensill and Mr. Nixon who helped out on the day. Also Ms. Romka Sudall who led the choir and all the staff who came on the day and either sang in the choir or showed support for our candidates. I would especially like to thank all the parents and Sponsors for the preparation of the 22 children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday. Next year these children are eligible to receive their First Holy Communion. In 2018 there will be Confirmation for any child who has been baptised, usually around Year 3 at school but certainly any age while at school. Beyond school there is the RCIA program for adults. At a separate time and date next year, children will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion for any child who has been confirmed and baptised.

Congratulations to the children from our Saint Mary’s family – Daniel Lowe, Jacob Sutton, Nicholas Sutton, Josie Perrett, Hamish Mungall, Amelia McCarthy, Eleanor Smith and Bella Burnage as well as children from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Nanango and from the churches at Blackbutt, Cooyar, Kumbia and Yarraman. Justine Evangelista, Rupert Barr, Matilda Doran, Cornelius Curtain Finn Perrett, Ethan Euston, Holly Barron, Charlotte Barron, Rhiannon Ryan, William Ryan, Penelope Curtain, Ryan Ellacott, Jayson Carbonilla and Harper Entwistle. There are some lovely photos in this newsletter.

Prep to Year 6 There are still two weeks of Term 2 left, this week and next week before we go on holidays. Children are still completing assessments and tasks. Teaching and Learning will be continuing right up until Thursday next week when we have our whole school Athletics carnival. School finishes at 2.55pm on Friday 23rd June. If you are going away on holidays earlier, can you please let the teacher know.

Some children in P-6 are struggling with their behaviour in class. Help your child have a better day at school by ensuring that they get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and dinner and drink plenty of water. Reading to your child at night no matter how old they are, is a relaxing time spent together. After a busy day, sometimes children just want some down time. When things change on the home front – no matter how small – they can have a big impact at school. Please contact your child’s teacher if there are any changes to the ‘norm’ so that we can help your child cope when at school.

Bey BladesChildren love to play Bey Blades on a Monday and Wednesday lunch time in Room 23, and I enjoy watching them have such fun. I supervise these sessions. Children are not to use the Bey Blades outside of this time and place. The Beys need to be played in a special stadium for safety reasons. Children using them outside this time and place will have them confiscated and returned at the end of the week. For security reasons, children should keep the Beys in a plastic bag with their name on it and given to the teacher. The temptation to play at morning tea and lunch can be too strong for some students.

BOUNCE BACK!

Blame fairly. How much of what happened was due to you, to others and to bad luck or circumstances?• Don’t just blame yourself when bad things happen – consider how much of what happened was due to your own behaviour,

how much was due to what other people did and how much was due to bad luck or circumstances (such as being in the wrong place at the wrong time or random events).

• When something bad happens, try to do a pie chart showing:- How much me?- How much others?- How much bad luck and circumstances?

Accept what can’t be changed (but try to change what you can change first).• You can try to change the things that you have some control over. For example, if you are worried about schoolwork there are

lots of things you can do to improve your skills, such as asking parents, or your teacher for help, making a plan and practis-

Page 3: ain ary’ Caolic College

realise your dignity

ing the skills. If you have had a fight with a friend you can try to talk with them about what is troubling you.• Some things you are worrying about may be other people’s worries, like mum and dad’s worries, not yours. It is not helpful to

worry about things that you have no control over or cannot change.

Next week the final two parts of BOUNCE BACK!

ToysIf your child is bringing toys for Show and Tell or Show and Share then please remind them to give the toy to the teacher to look after or keep it in their bag. Bringing toys to school to play with at lunch or morning tea can be problematic as you can appreciate. Please discourage the bringing of toys to school. The school has footballs and soccer balls for general play. It is best the children use the school’s equipment as it saves issues over who can play and who can’t play ‘because it’s my ball!’

Fidget Spinners have run their course at school. Please keep the fidget spinners at home. Teachers will be ‘minding them’ till the end of term if they are used in the classrooms or in the play areas.

ToiletingStudents in Year 1 may be taken to the toilets at the end of each break so they won’t need to leave the classroom during class time. Students are encouraged to have water bottles, ensuring that they are filled in their own time not during class time. It is 95 minutes between the sessions so children shouldn’t have to leave the classroom, if they have gone to the toilet at morning tea and lunch. There has been too much movement during valuable teaching time, with some year 1 students ‘needing’ to go to the toilet etc. Please remind your child to go to the toilet before leaving home.

Phones and iPodsPlease remind your child that phones and iPods are not to be accessed during the day at school. For safety and security, these devices should be handed into the office before school and collected after school. These are kept in a safe and secure place. If a phone is used during the day it will be confiscated and parents contacted. Children keep these electronic devices in their bags at their own risk.

APRE NewsThere was a real buzz at the Saint Mary’s church over the weekend. On Sunday morning, we officially welcomed a group of students into our St Mary’s Parish community through the sacrament of Confirmation. We wish to congratulate our candidates on this significant and wonderful milestone. A big thank you to Father Stephen, parents, staff and sponsors for supporting and preparing the children for the sacrament of Confirmation. We know all the children appreciate the love and support that has been provided to them at this important milestone in their lives.

On Sunday evening, we were blessed with the musical talents of our students and staff at Mass. The “Fire Pit Youth” group performed beautifully. This group of students, along with some of our staff perform once a month at the Sunday evening Mass. All are welcome to attend and it is a wonderful opportunity to support our youth group ……the pizza (for a gold coin donation) at the end of Mass is an added bonus!

Lastly, the Year 6 students are currently investigating ‘Corporal Works of Mercy’. As a way of putting this into action, the students are providing ingredients and cooking meals for the Community BBQ this Tuesday. The Community BBQ sees those in need within the Kingaroy and surrounding communities and offers them an opportunity to get a filling, healthy meal in a welcoming environment. Our Year 12 students and staff assist with preparation and serving on the evening. Thank you to our Yr 6 students and families who provided the ingredients for the Community BBQ. Our local community are very grateful and feel very blessed with your generosity.

Keep smilingMiss Bec O’ConnorActing APRE

KOKODA Challenge 2017COURAGE. ENDURANCE. MATESHIP. SACRIFICE!

On the 2nd of June, a group of thirty-two parents, students and teachers headed to St Andrew’s in Ferny Grove before starting the Kokoda Challenge in the Brisbane hinterland of Mt Coot-tha National Park. Our six teams, each consisted of an adult leader and four students. It was wonderful to have four parent leaders this year along with the dedicated staff.

On the Saturday morning, at 5am, our teams prepared and packed for the 15km or 30km course resulting in a short drive to the starting line. After registering the teams and a brief talk from a former digger, the Last Post was sounded and away we went (along with many hundreds of others).

The course started out with a long uphill stretch, and during the 6-8 hours proved to be tough, long and difficult. Many hours of endurance took its toll on a fair few competitors but our teams stayed strong and endured, encouraging each other and supporting the weary when needed.

One of our SMCC team leaders, Mr Ron Reeve gave us this insight: “What a massive event and a great opportunity for SMCC to compete. Team spirit was running high. It was great to see all our teams staying together – 30km is a long way. Who knew! Sore legs and tired feet, but all our teams crossed the finished line. Some had the energy to run over the line! Thanks to St Andrew’s for kindly accommodating us overnight and fabulous to have Father Nigel visit for a catch up. A huge thank you to Mr Dunbrack and Mr Ware for all the lead-up training and coordinating the entire effort. Thanks also to our support crew for cooking and our P&F for helping us with supplies.”

Our competitors ranged in age from 14 to 69 and I congratulate each of you for the spirit and mateship that you showed during the entire event. I also wish to thank Mrs Kathy Ware and Ms Judy Costigan for their wonderful support; to the principal of St Andrew’s Mr John Leyden for the night stay at his school; Father Nigel Sequeira, for his unwavering support and to our wonderful P&F committee for supporting us over the past years. A special thank you to all of the parents who supported their child, either passively or as a competitor.

Rugby League ReportWow! What a way to finish the football season.

The lads played absolutely their best game.

Down on numbers, 12 players. Kingaroy had just 13 but matched us on the field player for player.

Kingaroy dominated the start gaining two quick converted tries and were sensing a try feast, but the Saint Mary’s lads were all heart. They also scored not once but twice and a good game was on. Just before half time Kingaroy scored again so we went into the break with the lead. Early in the second half our team scored twice and so the scores were levelled. Bill and I were ecstatic. But the game turned once again and Kingaroy’s big players got a good run on, and so put them back in front.

Kingaroy held on to this lead for the remainder of the game but our lads refused to lie down. Paddy Hoult got the ball and weaved his magic, side stepping players and busting out of tackles to run ¾ of the field to score in the corner. It was ‘heart in the mouth’ stuff all the way. Surely he’ll be tackled, no he’s still going… yes he’s escaped that attacker…. It looked for a moment like Paddy had a try under the sticks but one of Kingaroy’s players was gaining on him and pushed him to the side. When Paddy final made it safely over the try line with a beautiful dive right in the corner, we were all exhausted and I was hoarse to boot! My voice didn’t return to normal for 24 hours.

Harry Burt again led the tackle count and played very strongly, ably backed up by Hayden Binnie who also tackled well and played his best game of the season. Both players earned Man of the Match.

Special commendation to Francis Hobbs for consistently backing up. Appling this tactic he was there when he was needed to take the ball, and so scored two very valuable tries.

The final score was seven tries to five. Go Saint Mary’s!
