Introduction
My name is ‘Abdul ‘Azim Hj Daud and currently
a 3rd year student in Universiti Brunei
Darussalam. I am majoring in Economic. As per
required by our university, every 3rd you must
go for their discover year and I chose Waseda
University. I was really lucky to be chosen as
one of the student that would go Waseda and
did not regret my decision.
My colleague and I start our journey to Japan
on 12th March 2017 and arrived Japan on the
15th. The flight took a toll on our body because we were seating down for 6 hour straight. When we
arrived, all of us were surprised by the coldness in Japan even though it was almost spring and it
be low as 4 degree but we all came prepared and already wore layers of clothing. Then our life in
Japan starts.
Objectives and Achievement
There are four main objectives that I wish I accomplished during my stay in Japan. This was all
decided before I even go to Japan. My life in Japan are mostly revolved around this objectives.

*Creating and meeting friends
As obvious as it sound, I was hoping to create friends during my time in Japan. I was determine to
have more Japanese friend. Friends are essential in one’s life and having Japanese friend is hard
to have in Brunei simply because there a few Japanese people living there. Although I was
expecting to make lots of Japanese friends but I did not expect to have many international friend
from different country. As AIMS7 programmed not just limited to Brunei but to very ASEAN countries
and because of this I was able to make more international friend. Before our semester starts,
everyone from the AIMS& programmed went on a picnic so we can get to know each other and we
create a bond to each other. I think that my life in Japan would not be as interesting and fun without
them.
Aside from that, I did managed to be friend with Japanese from my seminar and some of my classes.
Also I made friends from around the world from US to China and I am really happy to be friend with
people them.
*Learning Architecture
The second objective that I really want is to learn architecture. Before I went to the path of
economics, my study was all about designing which lead me on being interested on architecture.
As our university does not have any architecture courses and I wished to take it at Waseda. Sadly
architecture course was only offered during winter semester but I did take Introduction to Arts
course to compensate this as it contains architecture as well. I slightly accomplished this objective
since I did learn objective but still disappointed on not to be able to take architecture course.
*Badminton
One of my hobby is to play badminton, and I really hoped on being able to play badminton in
Waseda. Especially Japan’s badminton level is higher compare to Brunei and I wanted to learn few
techniques and from Japanese people. So in order to achieve this, I need to join a badminton club
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming

or circle but since club is more intense, I decided to join a circle instead. During my hunt for
badminton circle, I encountered with few issues and problems. Even though Waseda claimed that
most of the circles are suitable for international student but the members from the badminton circle
cannot speak English at all. At the time, I was not confident on my Japanese Language and ended
up not joining the badminton circle but instead ICC instead. I was really disappointed on this and I
was really hyped up on being able to play with Japanese people.
*Improving Japanese Language
Before my study in Japan, I did study Japanese language for one year and when my stay in Japan,
I see this as an opportunity to further improve my Japanese language. I do interested on improving
writing skills but my priority is on improving communication skills instead. After my study finished, I
believe that I improved my Japanese language both in writing and communications. Especially on
communication skills, as I am more confident now to speak in Japanese compare to before. The
Japanese course I took at Waseda were one of the driver to help me gain confidence. I truly believe
that I achieved this but I do not want to stop there, I want to improve more on Japanese language
and hopefully able to take N3 test eventually.
*Explore
When you staying on foreign countries, obviously
your first thought would be exploring and travelling.
This chance is could be a onetime only, so I tried
to visit all the places in Japan. Although there are
money constraint but I still managed to go to
different places. One of the highlights was when I
go to Osaka with other Bruneian friends. We
explore from Osaka all the way to Kobe. I regretted
not going to Kyoto to visit the Ginkakujin. Other
than Osaka, I went to Chichibu and Kuroizawa which both is also amazing and pretty to watch. But
out of all places, the best place for me was Ueno in Tokyo. We were lucky to be in Japan during
spring season which the only time there will be sakura flower. The view at Ueno is simply stunning
but even the word stunning is underrated,, there are no words that can descrive its beauty. So in
terms of exploring, I did what I can do. If there is an opportunity again, I would like to visit to other
places like Hokkaido for skiing and more.

Extracurricular activities
I joined the hippo family programmed where I lived
with a foster family for two days. My foster family
lived in Chichibu and was in the middle of
mountains. My experience there was extremely fun
and I learned new things during this homestay.
Although my foster family’s house is old and is a
traditional wooden house but I think it is good. I
really enjoyed there and the house feel really cozy.
During my homestay, my host family made udon
with different type of tempura ranging from shrimp to sweet potato. For me, it was really delicious
and it made me hooked up on eating udon and soba. We also had a morning walk around the
neighborhood which was super fun and relaxing. It was still sakura season there but the best thing
is the natural air that I breathe in plus with a foster family. I get to experience a Japanese life with
the old wooden house. I do not know how to describe it but it was total worth it and not to mention
that my foster father have the same hobby on collecting money as me which was really fun to talk
about.
Then there was the Honjo trip and were organized by the AIMS staff.
We visited a Waseda high school that was located at Honjo and
took around 2 hours to get there by bus. There learned on how their
educational style is different from Brunei and some of the students
gave a presentation about Japan. I do learn a lot from their
presentation like how convenience store have involved and how
some items have evolved to suit Japanese taste called Japanism.
Aside from the high school, we went to a farm for some farming
action. We cultivate Japanese cucumber and was able to eat a
sweet sweetcorn well fresh sweetcorn. It was an interesting
experience and I
was surprised how the farmers are so innovative
where they combined a pumpkin stem with the
cucumber to save cost.
Then there was Tanabata festival. I was chosen for
one of the leaders for organizing the festival for
AIMS7 sutdents. There was 4 of us in total, 2 is
ASEAN and another 2 is Japanese. I learned the
origin of the Tanabata festival and as a team we
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming
5
worked together to organize a good festival from games to acting out the Tanabata. It was a good
experience for me and really fun and through this activities, I was able to create more friends.
Impressions and life in Japan
Life in Japan, truly an experience that I may not encounter
again. I have mixed feelings about Japan both in a good
way and in a bad way. However I believe that it is mostly
towards the good side. The only think, I am complaining is
that Japan cost of living is higher compare to Brunei and
given our level amount of allowance, it was difficult to live
in Japan. But most of my miscellaneous stuff came from a
100yen shop which was truly life saver.
But overall my impressions on Japan is positive. I see
Japan as a modern country especially in Tokyo and I am
really amazed by the public transport. I can go every part
of Tokyo only using train only. Not just limited to Tokyo,
Osaka similarly have this and the fact that Japan have
railway that connects to other prefecture is really
convenient. There is also the almost perfect time management in Japan. Almost every train is on
time for their schedule but of course there some time it is not due to external problems. The strict
time management had changed my life ever since, now I look my watched every time and plan my
journey timely so I arrived at my destination on time. Sometimes it’s a hassle but it did changed me
in a good way to never be late again.
Experiences as an exchange student
Obviously for every person, the first time you arrived on a foreign countries, they tend be shy and
introverted and this also apply to me. My first month which involved me being not socializing at all
but as the time pass by, I gain more confidence to talk especially in Japanese language and I am
planning to take JLPT test soon in Brunei to get at least N3. I get to experience a new way of
teaching and new knowledge on different subject. I find the subject on introduction on Arts really
interesting especially on Architecture. I am planning this as a starting point to continue studying
about architecture. There are several subjects useful too that I would like to use which is
Introduction to Marketing. This course really useful and since I am also planning to open up a
business, this course can be useful on the marketing side of it and I do not regret on taking it.

However I believe that the most important thing is to make friends. I was able to make friends from
around the world and as we are the new generation that may someday lead the country. This may
make our countries grow closer especially ASEAN and Japan. This exchange programmed is the
foundation to make this happen.
Conclusion
I think my stay in Japan have a positive
impact on me, two thing that are clearer are,
it helped me gain confidence on Japanese
language and I am more strict on my time
management to be on time. Also it is truly a
good experience for me to live in Japan. I
was forced to be independent in Japan and
I have to be strict on my budget so I could
survive during my entire stay. But on a side
not it is truly a wonderful experience as I
was able to meet, see, do and a lot more
Japan. I express my gratitude to the AIMS7 programmed.

初めまして。私はフイゼと申します。ブルネイから来ました。

Greetings reader! Selamat Berkenalan! 大家好!I am Fui
Tze from Brunei Darussalam. I am an undergraduate
student from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) majoring
in Economics. In Spring 2017, I have participated AIMS7
exchange program as an exchange student in Waseda
University. In this program, I have gained many experiences,
knowledges and built many friendships. It was one of the
most valuable and precious moments I have in Japan and
Japan will always be a place I will return to.
WHAT I HAVE ACHIEVED DURING MY LIFE IN JAPAN AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT
Before my enrollment in Waseda University, I have studied Japanese Language for 2 semesters,
which is also equivalent to one year, in my home university. Japanese is the 5th language I have
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming
8
learned after 4 languages and 1 dialect: Mandarin,
Hokkien, English and Malay (national language of
my home country). Although I have come to
Japan with basic knowledge of Japanese
Language, my arrival in Japan had me noticed
that there are more to learn and many that I do
not know despite a year worth of Japanese
Language lessons. Living in Japan has provided
me better opportunities of learning and practicing
Japanese language, which I barely have the
chance to back in my home country (as I am only able to learn and speak in class). That being said,
my Japanese level has a significant improvement since I “move” into Japan.
Beside the learning of Japanese Language, there are other achievements that I have made when
I was an exchange student in Waseda University. For instance, another achievement I have
unlocked is that I have met pe ople with different cultures and backgrounds while studying in
Waseda University. Waseda University consists of diverse student population and that has
benefited me a lot. I have met not just Japanese friends and also students coming from different
part of this world. I was also lucky to have met many professors who are well-known in their fields.
Last but not least, I was able to take up courses that are not available in my home university when
I was in Waseda University. I was able to gain more knowledge with good guidance from the
professionals and facilities available in Waseda University. This is one of the reasons why I chose
to study in Waseda University.
WHAT I HAVE NOT ACHIEVED DURING MY LIFE IN JAPAN AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT
Due to the short period of time I had stayed in Japan, I regret of not being able to proceed to higher
level of Japanese Language. I have always wanted to speak fluently in Japanese language so I
can always go back to Japan to meet friends and host families and communicate with them in
Japanese. Furthermore, due to the limited time, I could not explore more of Japan. I have
experienced spring, summer and autumn in Japan but not winter. There are also more places I
wanted to visit but could not do so. With these regrets, I am hoping that I will be able to accomplish
all of them one day in the future.
EXPERIENCE AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT
As mentioned before, I have gained a lot during my life as an exchange student. With these, I am
hoping that I can bring back those knowledge to my home country, to my home university to help
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming
9
share what I have learned and also to use all the knowledge I have earned to further improve my
studies and as well as in the future, my work performance. I am hoping that the skills and knowledge
that I have learned in Waseda University and also during my stay in Japan will help to improve
Brunei’s economy to be like Japan. Japan has taught me a lot especially with their advance
economy and I hope having Japan as a role model, Brunei Darussalam can learn and improve in
many aspects.
ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE CAMPUS
In Japan, I have learned to do things myself
and also travelled around Japan myself.
During my stay, I have travelled to many
places in Tokyo and outside of Tokyo. From
the famous Shibuya, Shinjuku to Osaka,
Kyoto, Nara and many more. I have learned
to plan ahead and to make use of the free
time I have during my stay in Japan. I have
participated in many Japanese traditions in different seasons such as 花見 (a long standing
Japanese tradition of welcoming spring, also known as cherry blossom festival), 祭り (one of the
famous summer traditional festival in Japan and also refer to the tour of god in the village), 花火
(firework festival that happens every summer in Japan) and many more.
Other than individuals from university, I have also
gained a new host family in Japan. I have received
one before when I was enrolled in another
exchange program called JENESYS.
Nevertheless, I am happy to have received
another one to spend my time with while I am in
Japan. I have spent most time with the host
families from Hippo Family and we met up every
month to have different activities done together.
Another one of the biggest achievement I have
made is meeting my other host family from the JENESYS program. It was harder for me to meet
them when I was in Japan as they live in Nagoya. However, they were willing to come to meet me
and spent time with me at Universal Studio Japan when I made my visit to Osaka.

Activities that I have done with my Hippo Family Club’ host families are kimono wearing during
spring, yukata during summer matsuri festival, cooking of Japanese food and Bruneian food,
Japanese song karaoke, the celebration of Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day in June, and
also my graduation in Waseda University.
Beside my host families, there is another group of individuals who I also refer to as family and there
are the other AIMS7 exchange students from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
We all stayed in Nippon Rikkokai, Nerima-ku during our exchange program. Outside campus, I
usually spent time with them and we went to places and did many things together. Picture shown
is when we had our first outing altogether at Shinjuku Gyoen to have picnic together during the
hanami season. I have had a lot of fun moments in Japan and mainly are because of them.
LEARNING EFFECTS OF JAPANESE LANGUAGE LEARNING
Japanese language classes are mainly hosted in Japanese only. Initially I had a hard time trying to
understand the instructions given in class but the teachers were really helpful! They would either
explain it in English (if there really is a problem communicating) or have some students help me. I
have learned a lot in Japanese classes and also practiced a lot.
I also learned Japanese from my daily surrounding. In the train, restaurants, dormitory, gatherings
with Japanese friends and more. Because Japanese was the mainly spoken language, it prevented
me from using English. Thus, I managed to pick up new words very quick.
JAPAN
Japan has always amazed me with the wide
range of experts in different field. Japan’s
specialized field range from technologies and
machineries that are top ranked in this world to
animation products. They are very diverse.
Apart from that, I also like the Japanese
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming
11
traditional culture. The way of celebrating each season, the traditional food and beverages and the
traditional clothing.
Japan has also attracted me because of their well-developed economy. Japan was one of the first
to build up a stable economy and a lot of the East Asian countries can look up to. Despite being a
natural disaster-pro ne area, they are still managed to catch up after every unfortunate event. Their
constant upgrade for their technology has helped them to speed up their recovery and the
improvement has helped to improve the efficiency.
Before enrolling in Waseda University,
I managed to visit Japan for 10 days
under JENESYS (another excha nge
program). During the 10 days I was
brought to different places in Japan and I
learned a lot about Japanese culture.
After the program, I was even more
certain that I want to come to Japan again.
As a result, I picked Japan for my home
university’s discovery year to come to Japan to study.
THOUGHTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOUTHEAST ASIA AND JAPAN
Southeast Asia and Japan’s relationship started a long while ago. Japanese technologies were the
first among the others to enter Southeast Asia and Japanese products are often found anywhere
in Southeast Asia. Japanese skills and knowledge are well taught to many industries in Southeast
Asia and most mainly became the pillars of the economy. As a result, Japan is widely known in
Southeast Asia. However, this is not the case in Japan regarding Southeast Asia.
Most of the Japanese do not know some of the countries in Southeast Asia especially Brunei
Darussalam. It is very interesting that every time when a Japanese asks me about my hometown,
majority of them do not know where Brunei Darussalam is and some says it is the first time they
have heard of the name. I find this interesting because Japan is the main customer of Brunei’s oil
and gas exports. Japan imports roughly 82% Brunei liquefied natural gas from Brunei and it has
covered mainly the total growth of the economy.
Although the figure could be small as compared to other exporters, I always think there is a better
way to improve it. I hope one day the relationship will be further enhance and more will know more
of Southeast Asia like how Japan is well-recognized in Southeast Asia.

THE FUTURE
For the last time, I would like to thank SILS from Waseda University for this precious opportunity.
Espeically to the AIMS staff who organized so many events for us to make sure we enjoy our time
in Japan and in Waseda University. To the Hippo Family Club, thank you for the special experience
of living in Japanese lifestyle. To my dorm mates, thank you for all the fun moments (especially our
dusk till dawn karaoke session)! To everyone I meet in Japan, thank you so much for everything
you have done for me and thank you for your support and help. I will definitely return sometime in
the future to visit everyone. And most importantly, I would also like to thank my home university for
the support and guidance that have aided me throughout the whole journey.
皆さん、いろいろありがとうございました。感謝します。

Study abroad report.
Participating in the AIMS7 program has given me
many experiences and opportunities. Firstly, living in
Japan. Tokyo has certain emphasize about convenience.
The コンビニ provides food for the ones who are
hungry at 3.00am in the morning. I really like them .The
trains in Japan provides the means to travel whenever I
want travel wherever in Tokyo and its nearby area. They
have so much area and places of interest to see and
explore. Chichibu located in Saitama was especially
beautiful during spring. I visited Chichibu during Hippo
Family Club’s Homestay program. Even only for a day, the
host family showed hospitality and cared like I was their
own family member. I am grateful for that. During spring,
in the mountains of Chichibu, multiple shades green
leaves and red leaves can be seen. The presence of sakura tree in the midst of the leaves
furthermore enunciate the colour contrast, making the mountains even more beautiful. Living in
the dormitory with the other participants has provided with many wonderful memories. The
participants are all amazing people and wonderful friends. Spending time with them I learnt a lot
about their culture, to better communicate and to learn how to better respect people. I cherish the
time I had spent with them. I aim to become a better person and be better in communicating
overall in the future with my exposure as an exchange student. Finally studying in Japan. I will
never forget the friends I made in my classes especially in Comprehensive Japanese 01. My

inspired me to be always effortful when doing something. Overall, the experience of studying and

Achievements
To me, my biggest achievement in Waseda was learning the Japanese language. To be studying
at Waseda University would be my first time coming to Japan. Coming to Japan, I had never learnt
any Japanese language nor have I ever learnt any other language other than Malay and English. I
only started learning Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana) a month prior to my scheduled
arrival yet I still have difficulties in reading simple words written in Japanese. I was enrolled in
Comprehensive Japanese I and also Japanese for Zero Beginners. Comprehensive Japanese I
was taught intensively, and even though the schedule was very packed, I could see my Japanese
improving from not knowing anything at all to be able to read road signs and being able to read the
menus in cafes and restaurants. Who knew I could learn a language that was completely alien to

me in just a matter of months! I was also able to talk in simple Japanese with Japanese friends and
also other international friends who are also learning Japanese. I also had the chance to
experience two seasons in Japan (spring and summer)! Every places that I went to in Japan were
all breathtakingly beautiful and unique in their own way. I have encountered many locals and finally
understand why the Japanese are known as the most polite society in the world. All of them were
really kind and helpful. Going around Japan and observing the people’s culture and lifestyle has
definitely broaden my perspective in many things, and I have learnt that differences are not to be
despised, but are meant to be cherished.
Unaccomplished
One of the things that I did not achieved during my time in in Japan and studying at Waseda is that
I did not have the chance to learn Kanji as I have no basic in Japanese at all. However, should I
get the chance to do so, I will definitely seize it and improve my Japanese reading skill. Secondly
is not being able to take courses that are my major back in my home country (Petroleum Geology)
as all of the geology/Earth Science modules in Waseda were thought in Japanese and we were not
advised to take it.
Experiences in Japan
Studying in Japan was one of the most exciting and life changing experience for me. It has taught
me to be more independent, but more importantly to be more open to other ideas and to be braver
in doing things. It has definitely boosted up my confidence and that will certainly aid me in my future
endeavors. I had also made a lot of international friends and exchanged a lot of experiences and
perspectives among us. Being a Muslim and living in Japan for five months is not as easy as living
in a Muslim country, however there is always a way to work things out. I am very grateful that
AIMS Study Abroad Report: Spring, 2017 Incoming
17
Waseda University have a praying room for Muslims so I can just walk there when I have to pray.
There are also a few mosques quite near to Waseda and Rikko dorm so that to me is convenient.
Experiencing Ramadhan (fasting month) and also Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Feast of Breaking the Fast
month) was rather a pleasing experience because it was very different than how we would celebrate
it back in our home country but having friends to celebrate it together has made it more fun.
Courses Review
I had taken Comprehensive Japanese I in Waseda and it was probably my favourite course during
my time there. The teachers were all very helpful and would assist me whenever I have difficulty in
catching up with Japanese. It was a very intensive course with classes being held three times a
week of two three hours class (Monday and Wednesday) and one and a half hour class (Saturday).
What I like most about this class is that it was very interactive so that we could really practice
reading and writing and talking in Japanese and I think that was what made my Japanese skill
escalated rather quickly from zero knowledge to finishing the Minna No Nihongo books. I also took
Japanese for Zero Beginners and I really loved the class because eventhough it was not as
intensive as Comprehensive Japanese but we still learn a lot of thing but with a more relaxed pace.
Other than Japanese modules I have also taken Dinosaurs: Discovery and Research, Invitation to
Natural Sciences and also Life and Environment. All of these three courses were under the
Environmental Department in Waseda. They were not related to my major but are under my minor
(Environmental Studies) that I am currently doing in my home university.
Activities outside campus
I participated in Hippo Family Club homestay program and I enjoyed it very much! We went for the
program during our first month in Japan so by then my Japanese talking skill were not really good
yet but I am so glad that my host mother were really good in English! They were really wonderful
and treated me very kindly. They brought me around Chichibu, Saitama and introduce many new
Japanese culture to me. They also brought me to try many Japanese food such as Okonomiyaki,
which I had the chance to make it myself and also Kakigori, a traditional Japanese dessert. I also

18
participated in Waseda-Honjo fieldwork in which we had the chance to experience the educational
system of a highschool in Japan and also going to a farm nearby the school and harvested
vegestables such as cucumber and lettuces.
I am very grateful to be given the chance to experience this amazing exchange program and I really
enjoyed every single beautiful moments shared with all the wonderful people that I met during this
program. ありがとう AIMS Program, ありがとう Waseda and ありがとう日本!
