November 2015. I am happy to announce the release of Vol. 1, No. 2 now which covers the quarter
December 2015 to February 2016.

NORTHERN REGION
REPORT ON CASE WRITING WORKSHOP
A National Case Writing Workshop was organized at COERSchool of Management, Roorkee in collaboration with theAssociation of Indian Management Schools, Hyderabad. Itwas a three-day Workshop spanning from17th to 19th Dec,2015. This Workshop is first of its kind in UttarakhandRegion. The objective of the Workshop was to discussmultidisciplinary cases that will help teachers to exploredifferent perspectives. The Workshop's main course was tomake the participants well-versed in understanding casesand how to develop their own cases. The participants got anopportunity to sharpen their writing skills while developingtheir cases. The cases developed covered major areas likeProduction Management, Stress Management, MarketingManagement, Finance, Human Resource Management,Entrepreneurship, Innovations and InformationTechnology. The Workshop helped to develop key skillslike: Group working, Individual study skills, Informationgathering and analysis, Time management, Presentationskills and Practical skills. The Workshop also provided aplatform to provide an opportunity for the development ofkey skills such as communication, group working andproblem-solving.
The Case Workshop started with the Inauguration by theChief Guest, Dr Vinay Sharma and Dr V K Jain. Thirty twoparticipants enrolled for the Workshop who participatedwith full enthusiasm and vigor. The opening keynoteaddress was delivered by Dr Vinay Sharma, AssociateProfessor, Department of Management Studies, IITRoorkee. Dr Sharma spoke about the origin of the CaseMethod, its importance in Management Education andsome tips to follow while writing a good case. The nextsession started with the expert lecture of Dr V KJain,Director, COER SM. Dr Jain enlightened the studentswith real case insights. Dr Jain also appraised theparticipants about the different steps to be followed whilewriting a case. It was really a very good interactive andknowledge sharing session. After lunch all the participantsvisited different Industries with their teams to collect dataon various issues to write cases. Total nine cases weredeveloped from nine teams in different areas. The casesdeveloped during the Workshop are titled as ContractualVs. Payroll Workers; Modern Banking: A Boon or Bane;Implications of Industrial Accident: A Case Study of MIRCElectronics Ltd; Change in Packaging Trends; Rejected butnot Wasted; Entrepreneurship is still a Challenge; The Issuesof Innovation Management; Holistic Health Management;ERP Implementation: ASuccess or Failure.
The second day of the Workshop was totally a case writingsession with intra-and inter-group interactions and feedbackafter the formulation of the first draft. Necessary correctionswere made by the team members as and when required. Thethird day was the final submission day with power pointpresentations made by each group. It was indeed a realinformation acquiring session. Finally, the valedictory sessionstarted with feedback from different participants followed bydistribution of certificates. SAARC CHARTER DAY CELEBRATIONS AT BCCM
Bhavan's Centre for Communication & Management
(BCCM), Bhubaneswar as a member institution of
Association of Management Development Institutions in
South Asia (AMDISA) celebrated the SAARC Charter Day on
8 December 2015. The Charter Day celebration wasth
intended to craft public awareness of the commitment of
governments to the SAARC process and to highlight some of
the principal activities and the work of the ssociationA
towards peace, freedom, social justice and economic
welfare. The event created awareness amongst the
management students about mutual understanding, good
neighbourly relations, socio economic development and
meaningful cooperation among the SAARC Member
countries, based on ties of history and culture.
On this occasion, the PGDM students of Bhavan's Centre for
Communication & Management (BCCM) made a video
presentation on the history of SAARC Charter Day, followed
by a panel discussion haired by the Dean cum Directorc - -
(Academics) Dr Sujata Mangaraj. The presence of,
dignitaries, faculty and staff and students made this event
meaningful.
BCCM LAUNCHES ITS ENTREPRENEURSHIP
AND BUSINESS INCUBATION CELL
The inauguration of the BCCM Centre for Entrepreneurship
and Business Incubation Cell (CEBI) was held on 19th
December 2015 at Bhavan's Centre for Communication
and Management, Bhubaneswar and the Centre was
inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Sri Nityananda Palai, IAS,
Director, Directorate of Industries, Odisha. This entre willC
foster entrepreneurship and technology innovation through
new programmes of education and research, multi-
disciplinary courses, research laboratories and
partnerships.
“We are de l igh ted to launch BCCM Cent re for
Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation Cell and hope that
this Cell will support in developing the next generation of
business leaders," said Maj Gen B K Mahapatra, Chairman,
BCCM in his welcome address. Sri Nityananda Palai
highlighted the scope and opportunities for entrepreneurship
in Odisha.
The Guest of Honour, Sri P K Gupta, Deputy Director
I -cn harge, MSME Development Institute, highlighted the
present status of MSME in Odisha and the government
support. Sri C R Patnaik, Head, Entrepreneurship
Development Institute of India spoke on the issue of role of
entrepreneurship in the context of Skilling India and Making
India. While Sri B K Das, Head Directorate of Export
Promotion & Marketing, Odisha, presented the role of Export
Promotion Council in entrepreneurship development Sri A K,
Das, Joint Director, Textile & Handloom Department,
Government of Odisha threw light on the government support
for developing new ventures in textile and handloom sector in
Odisha. Mr Pawan Agarwal, Chief xecutive, Frespo FoodE
Products, a successful entrepreneur from Odisha shared his
experiences of developing enterprise and international
dimensions of it. Sri Madan Mohan Panda, Chairman DAV,
Public School highli hted the role of educational institutions, g
in promoting entrepreneurship. Dr Sujata Mangaraj, Director-
cum Dean (Academics) of BCCM presented an overview of-
the various activities of the Centre and the role of various
professional organizations like CII, FICII, SIDBI etc., in
promoting and fostering young entrepreneurs. Finally, the
Director General of BCCM, Dr S K Tamotia in his concluding
remarks said that the Entrepreneurship Centre will enable
BCCM to become the hub of entrepreneurship in the region.
Senior Director (Finance & Administration) Lt Col P K Sahu
proposed the formal vote of thanks.
The entre is expected to promote and develop a spirit ofC
entrepreneurship in the youth of the state.

NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON “WATER RESOURCEMANAGEMENT IN JHARKHAND” AT INSTITUTE OFSCIENCE & MANAGEMENT (ISM), PUNDAG, RANCHI.
A two day National orkshop on “Water Resource- WManagement in Jharkhand” was organised on 22nd and23rd February, 2016 at ISM Ranchi. In the inauguralsession, Sri Chandra Prakash Choudhary, Hon'ble Ministerfor Drinking Water and Sanitation, Govt. of Jharkhand, wasthe Chief Guest. The other dignitaries present on the dais forthis session were Prof (Dr) L N Bhagat, Former ViceChancellor, Ranchi University; Prof (Dr) M P Singh, FormerVice Chancellor, Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh; SriA K Saxena, Chairman, Institute of Water and Environment;Mrs Kumari Anjali, Director, Dept of Mines and Geology,Govt of Jharkhand; Prof (Dr) S P Singh, Former ViceChancellor, C V K S University and Director General, ISMand Prof G D Gulab, Director, ISM.
Hon'ble Minister Sri Chandra Prakash Choudharyemphasized the need for proper water resourcemanagement for sustainable development of the State.Besides government's intervention, mass awareness forwater conservation is spread among populace of the State.He also highlighted the issues of reclamation of open castmines for restoration of original land resources. He assuredconsideration of positive outcome of the Workshop for themanagement of water resources. Sri A K Saxena introducedthe theme of the Workshop focussing on the qualitative andquantitative aspects of the water resources of the State. Themacro-level management may cover the river basins whilewatershed programmes be embraced for waterin situ
conservation. Prof Bhagat was concerned on the issues ofassured irrigation for sustainable development. Prof M PSingh emphasized on curbing the water wastages. KumariAnjali stressed on the need for mandatory rain waterharvesting. Prof S P Singh highlighted on the applications ofmodern technology in water resource managementcovering both surface and groundwater resources. ProfGulab extended the vote of thanks.
The first technical session was chaired by Prof (Dr) M PSingh. Sri N K Roy (Retd Engineer in Chief, Dept of WaterResource Management, Govt of Jharkhand) presented acomprehensive assessment of water resources of the majorriver basins of the tate. Dr Uday Kumar highlighted theSrole of water resource management in providing foodsecurity in the State. The issues of water rights on the surfacewater resources of the PRI as well as traditional water rightsneed to be addressed on statutory fronts. Prof R K Singh, BITSindri, Jharkhand presented a scenario of fluoridecontaminated ground water and its ill effects on humanbeings. Er Saket Kumar (CEO, Jal Life) presented a timeseries analysis of arsenic contamination in major alluvialbasins of lower Gangetic and Brahmputra River Basin. ErRupali Mani (MECON, Ranchi) impressed upon the three'R' concepts - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle the waterresources in industrial use.
In the second technical session on 23rd Feb, Prof G Kumar,BIT Sindri, Jharkhand, stressed on the assessment ofpotential zones of ground water recharge for groundwater
management modelling. Dr A C Pandey, Dean, CentralUniversity, Jharkhand presented a detailed methodologicalaccount of RS GIS applications in water resource managementciting the case study of Ranchi urban sprawl. Dr R P Sharma,Executive Director, BIT Sindri, Jharkhand, presented the statusof groundwater potential as well as quality of groundwater inPakur district. Prof S P Singh, presented a holistic scenario ofgroundwater management in hard rock terrain like Jharkhand.On the basis of lithological, topographical and weatheringintensities, he classified the Jharkhand aquifers as Shallowaquifers within the weathered mantle whereas Deep aquiferswere mainly structurally controlled. He also suggested thatstudies on sedimentation, state studies in the river basins andpossibilities of de-silting be explored.
In the third technical session Sri D K Sinha, GM, Jindal Steeland Power, stressed upon the need and applicability ofenvironmental management plan in order to take care ofnatural resources including water and Catchment AreaTreatment Plan is executed for water resource management.Dr Anal K Sinha, Chief of Project, Mukand Ltd advocated theneed for strong and enforceable laws for water conservation aswell as judicious uses of water. Er Manoj Kumar, GeneralSecretary, Water and Environment, Ranchi stressed on thethree 'H'-- Habit-Habitat-Habitation as the sequence for waterresource management. Dr Jayant Sinha of St Xavier College,Ranchi highlighted the negative impacts of urbanisation onwater resources and stressed upon inculcating the feeling ofbelongingness for natural resources. Dr P K Verma, HODGeology, Ranchi University presented the concept of CyclicSystem – the Chakriya Vikas Pranali, through which theaccelerated infiltration processes have led to successfulmultitier agriculture in drought prone Palamu region. Prof DrD K Sinha of VKS University, Ara (Rtd.) stressed upon the needfor mass awareness programmes in this endeavour.
The valedictory session was presided over by Prof S P Singhand Prof (Dr) R K Pandey, V.C. Ranchi University was the ChiefGuest. Dr Uday Kumar presented a comprehensive account oftwo days' deliberations. Prof Pandey stressed upon the role ofgreen belt in water resource management. Prof Singhadvocated assimilation of technology with human endeavourin water resource management. The Workshop ended withvote of thanks to AIMS for sponsoring the programme,resource persons and participants. Prof G D Gulab, Director,ISM presented the vote of thanks.

OF MEDICINAL PLANTS”

on “Marketing of Medicinal Plants”, sponsored by
Department of Science and Technology, Government of
Jharkhand.
The Seminar was inaugurated by Hon'bleSri Saryu Rai,
Minister for Food and Supplies, Consumer Affairs,
Jharkhand.
The Seminar was conducted in four sessions which was
presided by Dr P Kaushal, Dr L N Bhagat, Prof N P Singh and
Prof Col (Retd) S K Sinha.
The introduction of the Seminar was done by Prof S R
Prasad of SNSIBM.
Dr M S Malik, Dr R P Singh and Dr Kaushal Kishore of BAU,
Dr S D Pandey of S obit University, Dr Sudama Prasad,h
Dr M K Dixit, Dr B Goswami, Prof Jyotsna, Sri H P Singh and
Sri Shushil Pandey, shared their views on the Subject. The
seminar concluded with the following few major
recommendations:
1. Setting-up of a board by the State Government for
controlling quality and price of medicinal plants.
2. Standardization on cultivation and identification of
medicinal plants based on scientific techniques.
3. Preservation of rare species from damage during
mining.
4. A regulatory authority to be set up for certification
of medicinal plants for use.

A orkshop on “Know Your Nation” was conducted atW
S N Sinha Institute of Business Management, Ranchi by
Prof Mohd Masood Ahmed, Director General, VVISM,
Hyderabad on 8 Feb 16. The Workshop was introduced byth 20
Prof S R Prasad of SNSIBM Prof N P Singh, Chairman, SNSIBM,
and Dr L N Bhagat, Former Vice Chancellor gave Key Note
address and explained the importance of the Workshop. Prof
Masood Ahmed gave a detailed presentation on strengths and
weaknesses of our Country. Prof Masood thatmentioned
India has the largest number of Post Offices in the orld. It hasw
the largest number of employees in the Indian Railways. India
is the fourth largest in wind power. Similarly, he gave a number
of examples showing its strengths; at the same time, he
expressed concern over the largest number of poor people in
our country. He exhorted the youth to ameliorate the miseries
of people by using the immense resources available in the
country. The students of the Institute evinced keen interest in
presentation and heard Prof Masood Ahmed with rapt
attention. In the end Prof Col (Retd) S K Sinha proposed vote of,

With the inancial ssistance from the Association of Indianf a
Management Schools (AIMS), a Faculty Development
Workshop on Case Method of Teaching was held at the
School of Management Sciences, Tezpur University during
January 22-23, 2016.
The Case method of teaching is widely accepted as a very
effective pedagogy for teaching in management courses.
Cases open the minds of students and relate them to the
practical world. Through analysing a case, students learn
how to deal with similar situations in the real world.
However, a lot depends on the instructor, who handles the
case in the class. The instructor should be well conversant
with the minute details of the case and s/he should have the
ability in driving the discussions in the class to the right
mode. An effective instructor can lead the class in analysing
the case so that students learn the particular aspect on
which the case is written. In this backdrop, this acultyF
D Pevelopment rogramme was organized to impart the
techniques of handling cases in the class.
The sessions were conducted by Prof Jahar Saha, who is a
professor and former director of the Indian Institute of
Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, from 1998 to 2002. The
other course instructor was Prof Abhinandan K Jain who is
a Professor at Indian Institute of Management (IIM),
Ahmedabad. He has special interests in the fields of
marketing research, quantitative models in marketing,
strategic marketing, and case method of learning. While
Prof Saha was personally present at the orkshop, Prof JainW
joined the orkshop from Ahmedabad through videoW
conferencing mode.
There were altogether 20 participants from various
management institutes of North Eastern region viz. Tezpur

CASE METHOD OF TEACHING HELD AT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

was divided into 10 sessions. The orkshop started withW
i Fourntroduction and understanding on Case methods. cases
were elaborately discussed and analysed in the workshop. The
cases are ;One Starch Products Limited Science Books, Inc.,
Marketing Brand Aava: not as simple as water, and Recycling
of Treated Water. The orkshop design was based on theW
conviction that participants learnt the most about case method
only through participation in case method as a facilitator as
well as a participant in case discussions. As participants in the
case discussion, they were required to prepare the case. This
means that (i) before the class began, they had to identify the
problems in the case, decide how they would resolve them,
and to think about how to convince others about their own
decision in the class, and (ii) in the class, they actively
participated to present and defend their decisions and
rationale and how to challenge the decisions of others in the
class. As facilitators, Prof Saha and Prof Jain prepared the case
thoroughly and conducted the discussion so that participants
could arrive at a consensus on how problems in the case
situation should be resolved.
The participants were totally involved in the Workshop and
prepared for their role as assigned and actively participated in
the discussion. All the participants collectively had an
enjoyable learning experience from the Workshop. The
participants thanked AIMS for the assistance in organizing the
Workshop.

On behalf of Sinhgad Institutes, Dr Parag Kalkar, Director,Sinhgad Institute of Management, Pune welcomed AIMSoffice bearers, deans directors. It was followed aand bywelcome address by Dr B V Sangvikar, Regional Director(Western Region) AIMS Dr L N Bhagat, President AIMS. ,delivered his presidential address. Past residents AIMSP of ,
AshokDr Joshi, Dr Y K Bhushan, Dr Apoorva Palkar,Prof Masood Ahmed, Dr Upinder Dhar, also shared theirthoughts on the importance of various domain skills for theholistic development of the students.
Dr Joshi shared his observations about state ofAshokManagement education across the world. He has alsoemphasized the point that vocational skills are differentfrom managerial skills. He also shared that managementeducation should focus more on development ofmanagerial talent rather than developing consultants. Hehas also stressed on broader understanding of society whileimparting management education.
Dr Y K Bhushan management alone is not skillstated thatbased rather it evolving body of knowledge. Henceis anshift to skill based is not right. Blending of skill based-approach with curriculum .is important

The main thrust of this orkshop was to strengthen the caseWwriting skills of faculty members of various managementinstitutions. Faculty members of various B-Schools attendedthe orkshop. There were 16 participants from 10 B-SchoolsWincluding IIM Indore and the host University. Dr Upinder Dhar,Vice hancellor, Shri Vaishnav Vidyapeeth Vishwavidyalaya,Cinaugurated the orkshop at 10.30 am as a resource person.W
In the inaugural address, Dr Dhar emphasized that cases inmanagement should be developed on the basis of facts insteadof fantasy. A good case development should follow the processof 4Ds – Data collection, Drafting, Discussion andDocumentation. Dr Dhar outlined the process of case writingwith the help of power point presentation and discussion. Hediscussed about case method as an effective pedagogy to teachmanagement students. The objective and entire process of theWorkshop was also discussed at length with the participants.
The participants, who were divided into five groups, visitedvarious companies in the post-lunch session of day toonecollect data and information for writing the cases. They visitedAxon Data, Duke International, Web Duniya, Street Bazar.comand Recharge Talent Search.

On second day of the orkshop, the session started atW10.00 am. A review of the work done on previous daythewas made. Dr Dhar facilitated all the participants inpreparing the first draft of the cases. The participantsworked in groups throughout the day to draft and redraft thecases.
On third day of the orkshop, the session started atW10.00am. The participants continued to work in groups toprepare the final drafts of the cases. Further, the groupssought suggestions by inter-group discussion. This wasfollowed by all groups reading their cases in front of all theparticipants to have their suggestions. The suggestions wereincorporated in the final drafts and cases were submitted tothe Coordinator. Certificate of Authorization was also takenfrom all the participants. This was followed by valedictorysession, wherein certificates were distributed and feedbackof the participants was taken. The orkshop ended withWvote of thanks by the Coordinator.
Dr Upinder Dhar, successfully facilitated the facultymembers in developing cases. The faculty membersdeveloped 5 cases based on the data collected from 5organizations. The cases will be registered with AIMS CaseClearing House, Hyderabad or European Case ClearingHouse, Cranfield University, United Kingdom.

A two days National Conference on “Disruptive Innovations
in Businesses: Lessons for Industry and B-Schools” wasorganized by School of Commerce and Management Studiesof REVA University in association with AIMS on 29 and 30 ofth th
January 2016. Disruptive Innovation, a term coined twodecades ago by a Harvard Business School Professor, ClaytonChristensen was dissected and demystified by thought leadersand CEOs of diverse organizations and researchers through aseries of talks, discussions and paper presentations.
The Conference was inaugurated with huge enthusiasm andfanfare at REVAUniversity Bengaluru campus. The hief uestC Gof the inaugural event was Mr Abhinay Choudhari, Co-founderof Bigbasket.com and Head of New Initiatives. Throughanecdotes, he narrated how simple process innovationsbrought great customer value in his company. The Key NoteSpeaker Ranjan Malik, a renowned innovation specialist andauthor of the book, “Storm the Norm” explained vividly thefive-step process of bringing innovations in organizations.Through his charismatic and extempore style, he narrated withsimple stories how visionaries' like Walt Disney realized theimportance of failure which lead to innovations. On the second day, the panel discussion on “Building Indiathrough Entrepreneurship and Innovation” lead by afamous ournalist and Senior Research Director, Dr MadanJMohan Rao from Your Story, along with four panelists whowere selected based on their focus on bringing innovationin their ventures. Founder and CEO of Pensaar, Ms DeepaBachu, CEO of MobMerry, Mr Krishna Prasad, Founder andMD of Exusports, Mr Saumil Majumdar and Founder ofRynxis Inc., Mr Ramesh Chander shared their experiencesin creating an environment conducive for radical thinking.One of the outcome of the session is School of Commercesand Management Studies now will associate with YourStory Media to develop a case study center of excellence inentrepreneurship.
The Chief Guest of the valedictory session was Mr VinayKumar, CEO of Datawise, who, using interesting examples,explored why India needs to innovate and not copy thepractices of western world and called for a need to have aninquisitive mindset and question the status quo abouteverything around us. Mr Ashok Pamidi, Regional Head ofNASSCOM, with his more than two decades of experiencein dealing with start-ups and IT ventures, narrated howIndia has created its own set of “jugaad” andunconventional innovation in various fields.
In terms of research papers 120 abstracts and 92 full paperswere received. After the plagiarism checks and peerreviews 82 papers were accepted for presenting. Finally 65papers were presented in five tracks and others wereconsidered in absentia.
� Track 1: Ahead of Customer Expectations – Currenttrends affecting customers, markets and brands:Marketing. Chair: Prof N Mekot, Dean, School ofManagement Studies, Goa University
Discussion agenda: Ahead of customer expectation, thefocus areas of discussion were in e-tailing, onlineshopping, and healthcare services and on similar issues.The researchers argued and deliberated on various meansby which companies use disruptive practices solvingdifferent challenges.
� Track 2: Empowering employees – Radical changes inpeople management strategies – Human Resources.Chair: Prof S S Prasad Rao, Director, HyderabadBusiness School, GITAM University
Agenda: Researchers presented papers on various topicsranging from emotional intelligence, quality of work lifebalance and creating conducive environment for radicalthinking. A few papers also discussed about innovation inbusiness school education which lead to betterempowerment of leaders. 'The radical changes in thestrategies of people management, labour welfare andsocial security issues were discussed. A few papers alsodebated how technology is upsetting the status quo of
health care delivery hospital industry.
� Track 3: Harnessing Technologies in Financial Markets–Emerging technologies in Financial and Banking Sector –Finance. Chair: Prof Muralidhar Kolar, BangaloreUniversity
The papers on finance and banking sector discussed about howstock markets can leverage big data to safeguard investorsentiments and how environmental accounting andimprovisations in banking transaction can help in inclusivegrowth.
� Track 4: Newer Business Models – Next practices andstrategies adopted by companies ahead of competition –Strategy and Entrepreneurship. Chair: Dr Ramesh, Dean,Mount Carmel College, Bangalore
Discussion Agenda: Track on innovation in business models,research papers discussed a set of strategies to bring customersand ecosystems closer by redefining the very meaning ofbusiness models. The papers ranged from online shopping andmobile payments, microfinance and business models,importance of longevity of organizations and so on.
� Track 5: Interconnectedness for efficiency – Latestbreakthroughs in services and operations.
� CTrack hair: Dr N Mekot, Dean School of ManagementStudies, Goa University
Discussion Agenda: Papers were presented by the delegates ontopics ranging from business analytics, wealth management,deployment of credit, workforce management to corporaterestructuring. In all the sessions, distinguished academicians asTrack chairs guided the researchers on how to refine theirresearch and to become better researchers.
To conclude, these two days enlightened the participants anddelegates to create and advance a strong knowledge base onthe theme. The school of Commerce and Management isplanning to release three edited volumes of select papers as anoutput. The faculty were inspired to continue their research onthese emerging areas and develop expertise and excellence oninnovation and disruptive innovation in particular.
