Aimhigher Healthcare Strand project summary October 2010 Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust 1 Aimhigher Healthcare Project South Yorkshire Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been involved with the Aimhigher Healthcare Strand Project since March 2005 and it has hosted the South Yorkshire Healthcare Project since August 2008. The principal aim of this Programme is to promote widening access into a broad range of Health Service careers by students from under-represented socio-economic groups (4-8). School students often have insufficient access to expert information, advice and guidance on the diverse career opportunities offered by the Health Service and a lack of awareness of the different progression routes. The Health Service in turn is keen to encourage young people to consider a career in the NHS and also to respond to Department of Health objectives of reducing health inequalities and also recruiting a diverse workforce that more accurately reflects the communities it serves. In the last academic year (2009 to 2010) 1959 students have taken part in the project from the following schools and colleges: Barnsley Carlton Community College Kirk Balk school Wombwell High school Rotherham Clifton Comprehensive school Maltby Academy St Pius Dearne Valley College Sheffield Chaucer school Parkwood school Myers Grove school Sheffield College Longley Park Sixth Form College Doncaster De Warenne Academy Mexborough school Don Valley school Doncaster College An additional component of the project is the work shadowing / work experience programme and with the support of Medical Divisional Directors at the hospital, a number of the Trust’s consultants and doctors have provided (or made an offer of) short work shadowing opportunities for students on level 3 programmes interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Programme activities Autumn Term Thackray medical Museum (Leeds) “Thackray Days” Aim: An understanding of the importance of health (NHS) in everyday life and how developments in health have evolved over the last 150 years to provide a variety of professional / clinical career opportunities. These are delivered in partnership with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and St James’s Hospital’s Education Liaison department. 168 year 9 students have taken part from a number of schools including Carlton Community College, Kirk Balk, Clifton, Chaucer, Parkwood School and De Warenne Academy. All of the students attending took part in some basic life support training and received certificates from Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Sheffield University’s Health Skills focus day Sheffield University’s outreach and Aimhigher team provided a one day health focus day for over 450 Barnsley students. The students took part in various clinical skills activities at the University’s Halifax conference centre in Sheffield. Schools taking part were from NECLA Barnsley. Spring Term Montagu Simulation Centre CARMA training Aim: An introduction to the NHS via a simulated ‘working’ environment to raise aspirations of working for the NHS in a health-related profession In partnership with Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals (supported by Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority), Montagu Simulation Centre provided eight half day training sessions on crisis and resource management training (CARMA) using high fidelity Meti manikins. 70 year 12 students took part in the training and feedback was extremely positive. The students attending were either studying A level / BTEC courses and had a direct interest in following a career in the health / caring professions. “Organ Organiser” Days Aim: Recognition of the relationship between science and medicine to improve understanding of careers in health Four sessions took place in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University’s Biosciences department. This event included three interactive workshops on organ identification, gene sequencing, and blood grouping and was designed to raise awareness of the biomedical sciences. 96 year 10 students took part in total and the workshops were designed to underline the importance of science in health. Hull University Focus Day Aim: An introduction to the range of health-related courses on offer at ‘local’ universities designed to promote awareness of what studying a particular course at university entails Hull University’s Faculty of Health and Social Care provided a one day heath focus day for year 10 students. 45 students from Wombwell High School and Carlton Community College attended and were given talks on a number of professions including operating department practitioner, children and learning disability nursing and midwifery. There were also practical sessions on wound dressing, resuscitation and manual handling as well as a campus tour given by the university’s student ambassadors. The university’s careers advisor also gave a talk to the student on progression routes. Barnsley Hospital – tour of biomedical science laboratories Aim: An opportunity to meet NHS clinical / professional staff to learn about their roles and responsibilities Eight year 12 students (AS Chemistry) from Wath Comprehensive toured the hospital’s labs. Three university students completing placements at the hospital explained the different specialist areas of Haematology, Microbiology and Pathology. Students were given a brief explanation of the importance of choosing a biomedical science course that included HPC registration as this is an essential requirement for working as a biomedical scientist within a NHS hospital.

South Yorkshire Aimhigher Masterclasses The Healthcare Strand funded three Masterclasses on medicine and on the biomedical and engineering sciences. Steer Clear / Crash scenario Aim: To show, using a dramatic reconstruction, the interplay of the full range of emergency services with a focus on career options within health / public services. This has involved working with Steer Clear and is a collaborative event with South Yorkshire Police (scene of crime officers), South Yorkshire Fire Service, local magistrates and victims of car / motorbike accidents to provide a simulated ‘crash’ and follow-up workshops. The workshops included CPR, forensic science, talk from victims, and benefit of NHS services in relation to treatment / rehabilitation (talk from drug addict) and magistrates on the consequences of dangerous driving. By the end of July 2010, 6 schools had hosted this full day event enabling 1073 students to watch the simulated crash scenario and to take part in the workshops. See below Attached are a number of analyses / data from some of the activities that have taken place between October 2009 and July 2010 including: Themed activity on “binge drinking”, Thackray Medical Museum visit including CPR session with Yorkshire Ambulance Service Montagu Simulation Centre “Crisis and Resource Management Training” University focus days – Hull University Summer school with the Faculty of Health and Well being at Sheffield Hallam University Steer Clear / simulated crash activity

Myers Grove school Impact? Can you make any comments, judgements, gen eral observations on students’ attitude, performance etc (do you feel that these a ctivities have had any direct impact / indirect impact?) The Society, Health and Development Diploma students have benefited greatly from events such as the Summer School, the scenarios created by the acting group. All of these young people aim to work in the Healthcare or Children’s workforce. The experiences provided gave them a clearer insight into the range of opportunities and the skills and qualifications required. Any issues identified It is always difficult to get access to health related placements for pre 16 year olds so the Healthcare Strand Project was an idea opportunity to bridge that gap. Quotes / comments Student evaluations have all been positive. Recommendations and Action Appreciating that funding is an issue, it would be good to have some alternative in place for the next cohort of 25 students studying for the Diploma and hoping to become part of the future workforce in this area.
