! Brought Confucian ideas back into government.

! Used a bureaucracy of government officials to run empire.

! High level officials- lived at court and worked close to emperor. ( EX: Gave emperor advice)

! Low level officials- worked throughout the empire.(EX: checked roads and canals were functioning and grain is available. )

! They had to supply one month of free labor on public works projects in China.

! Wheel barrow, iron plow, and chain pump helped farmers produce more food.

! Monopoly Is complete control of an entire supply of goods or of a service in a certain area or market.

Why was salt popular? ! It was used in ancient

times to preserve meat and vegetables. ( no refrigerators or freezers)

! The Han were the first people to mine for salt.

! Previously humans could only get salt from the sea, which was difficult.

merchants.

! Respected in Han society for their skills.

! Some became very wealthy owned a lot of land and slaves.

! Most merchants, however, lived modestly.

people.

! No social mobility for slaves.

! Most slaves were criminals others were foreigners captured or given as “gifts.”

! Slaves worked as government officials, usually eunuchs.

! Private slaves worked in household of wealthy.

! Worked hard with little reward.

! Were subservient to the men in their lives, had to obey Confucian social order.
