Solving Equations

Solving equations is just a matter of undoing  operations that arebeing done to the variable.  The task is always to isolate the variable­­ get the variable ALONE on one side of the equal sign.

Remember when solving equations to "keep the equation balanced" by making the same changes to BOTH sides of the equal sign.

Example 1:  Solve this equation for x:

x + 3 = 8   ­ 3   ­ 3

x = 5

x = 5

Check:  x + 3 = 8             5 + 3 = 8                8 = 8

Check:   3x ­ 4 = 11             3(5) ­ 4 = 1115 ­ 4 = 11    11 = 11Try:
