Control

We will keep the amount of fizzy drink the same in each bottle. (1.5 litres.)

We will have the same flavour and amount of the Mentos.

Hypothesis

Jaymee: “I think the Lift drink will

have the best reaction and shoot the highest.”

Sophie: “I think Fanta will explode the highest.”

Research

The roughness of the sweet and how fast it plummets to the bottle's base. If you drop a pack of Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke, you get this huge fountain of spray and Diet Coke foam coming out. It can reach a height of 10 metres. The chemicals responsible for the reaction are gum Arabic and gelatine in the Mentos and caffeine, potassium benzoate and aspartame in the Coke. But there have been no *rigorous scientific studies of the reaction until now.

*(rigorous) Exact

Conclusion Our hypothesis’ were both incorrect. It was actually the coke that exploded the highest. We think that the Fanta was the worst because we left the lid off the bottle for too long before we put the Mentos in. We think that carbon dioxide escaped before we put the Mentos in. Some of the bottles had less Mentos because they got stuck in the funnel. It all happened so quickly. That made it unfair for the Sprite. The Sprite may not have reacted as well because it only got seven Mentos in when it was meant

to have ten. They fell out of the funnel as we tried to put them in.

If we did the experiment again we would measure the explosion from the lip of the bottle , not from the ground. We think this would have been more accurate. We would also make a better funnel.

ResultsThe coke had the best reaction and it went the highest. The coke went 75 cm high. Then the sprite went the second highest and it went 50 cm high.

Lift and Fanta just bubbled over and did not really explode, it just looked like it had puked over the rim of the bottle. We had to work really quickly because it reacted so fast
