AIM HIGH @ HEPSDear Parents
FOOD TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE FACILITY/RESOURCE CENTRE
Yes, we have the green light to start using these
exciting new learning facilities, the kitchen and
Resource Centre, and they look fabulous. We
will have to be patient for a little longer as we
are currently furnishing and stocking the rooms.
Once everything is in its place the learning
centres will be open for the benefit of our students; we expect that it
will be ready within the next two weeks. Come and have a peek
during the open times in Education Week.
SCHOOL NURSES
We welcome Glenda Bray who will share the role of School Nurse. As you would be
aware Michelle Brown has been attending to our students over the last fortnight; Glenda
will join her by sharing the demands of the role, each five days a fortnight.
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF
We welcome Mrs Jenny van Dijk to the Education Support role. I’m sure she will
contribute to the strength of this already highly affective team.
PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
Many of our teachers have been mentoring students enthusiastic to join the teaching profession:
Bethany Gullaci in 4B, Stephanie Biront in 1/2B, Tyler Sonsini in Prep B, Damon Crossley in 6A, Kim
Dellevergin in 1/2G, Courtney Bottger in Prep C and Ellen Casey in Prep A.
I’m confident these students will benefit from the exceptional talent and professionalism of our teaching
staff.
EMERGENCY DRILL
Your children may have informed you of the emergency drill practised on Friday; we endeavour to
practise a lockdown and an emergency drill once a term to keep up efficient and experienced action
should the need ever occur. The students and staff performed admirably with all accounted in less than 5
minutes.
SCHOOL UNIFORM / UNIFORM SHOP
School Council has approved the outsourcing of our Uniforms. We are addressing the
challenges faced by many of our families trying to purchase uniforms at the provided times as
well as the demands made on a few of our parents to stock and sell items of clothing. We will
be providing the opportunity to buy up from our stock at a ‘quick sale’ in the near future as we
prepare the transition to the PSW store in 18 – 20 Railway Avenue, Ringwood East. Prices on
most items will vary approximately $2.00 to $5.00 (not taking into account that our prices were
due to increase). Benefits of outsourcing the uniform:
The retail staff will know HEPS’ uniform requirements and provide a high level of customer
service 6 days a week including school holidays
Online ordering available for parents 24/7
Private fitting rooms
Lay-by management
I will advise you the time of our ‘quick sale’ and when uniforms will need to be purchased from the new
outlet. ‘Second hand’ uniforms will still be available at the school.
As wintry conditions settle in it would be reasonable for all students to be dressed in winter school
uniform. Please respect the School Uniform code so that students do look as though they belong to the
school and that they set a high and positive standard. Remember that girls should only wear appropriate
leg wear that is, blue tights, white socks, gabardine pants or blue track pants. Leggings are not part of the
school uniform. I can appreciate that throughout the winter months and the greater incidence of rain,
items of the school clothing may be wet on the line, but it would be appreciated if children could wear
blue or an item that blends well into the uniform. If you have difficulties dressing your child in school
uniform please come and speak with me.

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Chris Finighan and I will be attending the Whitehorse/Maroondah Networks Leadership Conference
presenting 15th
– 17th
May. The theme for this conference is ‘School Leadership – Thriving, Not Just
Surviving’. Delegates will hear from highly effective leaders and learn from leading edge developments
in cognitive and positive psychology. Workshops will range from ethics and legal issues and protocols
through to providing high level feedback and communication and offer the skills to manage staff more
effectively. I will share some of our learning after we have attended. Mrs Sue Fraser will be in charge of
the school during our absence.
POLICE BAND – CODE ONE
Our students and staff enjoyed the Police Band – Code One on Friday 26th
April when they offered to
perform for us due to a cancellation elsewhere. It was wonderful for our students to witness such talent as
well as see our students so spontaneously engaged in song and dance. Needless to say the Police Band
was complimentary of our students’ behaviour and their positive engagement in the performance.
A JOB WELL DONE!
You would have noticed the fresh coat of paint on our gym doors and the wooden annex. A huge thank
you to Michael Timmer for his time and effort, as well as his perfectionism in upgrading this facility. It
looks 100% better and we certainly appreciate your suggestion, Michael, of volunteering your time to this
project.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.
Responsibility…is our business! Thanks to Matthew in Grade 1 for these great tips on how to show responsibility!
Clean up after myself
Listen to others
Share equipment with others and take turns
Help others when I have the skill!
Do you have any other tips to share, kids?
Have a great weekend everyone!
Mrs Finighan
Be responsible - Why, when people around us may not be?????
In the last few weeks I have had a number of children say to me:
“Some of my friends are being mean all of a sudden!” “I don’t seem to have got on very well with my friend for awhile now. What do I do?”
or
“My friend doesn’t want to play with me anymore”.
5 thoughts:
1. Life is full of change. As children grow and change, so often do friends.
2. Try to make your words and actions good ones. Even though your friend may not treat you
well at times, don’t copy it! You don’t want any regrets later on.
3. Listen to your friend first; try to understand his/her feelings.
4. Allow time for “both” of you to express your feelings, so that “both” feel valued and heard.
5. Respect the other person’s right to have different points of view.

DONATIONS…
We are wondering if anyone in our school community has games at home
that are no longer in use that could be donated to the games clubs?
Please drop your games into the office and we promise they will be enjoyed by the HEPS children! Thank
you to the Mullenger family for their wonderful donations.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE YOUR TIME?
The games clubs will run between 1.40-2.30pm, during lunchtime. (Days yet to be decided)
A HEPS staff member will supervise the club, however, it is always great to have friendly, caring adults

School Camps & Excursions: Asthma
If your child has asthma, attending school camps and excursions can introduce them to new asthma triggers especially if they are going into new
environments. It is essential that your child can participate fully and safely in all school activities. The following is a list of considerations to make for
your child before they go on school camp or an excursion:
Is your child’s asthma currently well controlled (e.g. no symptoms
at night, reliever use less than 3 times per week)?
Has your child had an asthma attack or asthma symptoms recently?
Does the school have an Asthma Action Plan for your child?
Has the school asked you to complete a School Camp and Excursion
Medical Update Form?
Does your child have their reliever medication and spacer on hand at all times?
Are they attending with any other medications to be taken on the camp/excursion?
If so, are there sufficient instructions to staff for use/dosage?
Does your child self-administer their medication? If so, has their technique been
checked recently?
For more information please contact The Asthma Foundation of Victoria on 1800 278 462 or www.asthma.org.au.
