Banksia, made up o two homes, was origi-nally built in 1860 was subsequently purchasedin 1931 by Mr. Richard Howe, northern horse-

man and owner o the International HarvesterCo. Mr. Howe was superstitious and rather

than tear down the house in order to have aproper Aiken "cottage," (an Aiken "cottage"was considered to consist o at least 22 rooms),the house was moved down the hill and agrander home was built and connected to theoriginal home. It now consists o 32 rooms, 15bathrooms and a ull size ballroom.

In later years, this elegant home was usedor many other reasons including being thefrst site o the University o South CarolinaAiken.

Te South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company was established in 1828.William Aiken, president o the Railroad Company and one o South Carolinas leading

cotton merchants, hired Horatio Allen, a distinguished engineer who later built theBrooklyn Bridge, to build a railroad rom Charleston to Hamburg, South Carolina, asite on the Savannah River. Work began in 1830 and on October 2, 1833, the rst trainarrived in the newly established town o Aiken, named in honor o the rst railroadpresident. In 1834, engineers Alred Dexter and C.O. Pascalis laid out the town withits wide streets and parkways, and Aiken was chartered in 1835. Aiken attracted manyvisitors, particularly wealthy Charlestonians who spent their summers at the place oretreat rom the heat and malaria o unhealthier regions. In 1865, as the War Betweenthe States neared a conclusion, Conederate General Joseph Wheeler took his positionin the town o Aiken to oppose Shermans raid and put an end to the Union advancewestward. It was one o Shermans rare deeats along the way.

Aiken recovered quickly rom the War and in 1870 began to attract wealthyNortherners, who were lured to the area by the opportunities or equestrian sports, thus establishing Aikens celebrated Winter Colony. Among those who wintered herewas Tomas Hitchcock, who with the Whitneys established the tract o land known asHitchcock Woods or public use.

Te restorations experienced in houses and churches refect the wealth and

sophistication o the population during the Winter Colony era and illustrate its impacton the community. Hayne Avenue, Colleton Avenue, South Boundary and WhiskeyRoad are old, ashionable residential avenues which attracted both local residents andwinter visitors to build beautiul homes. Historic downtown Aiken continues to serveas a vibrant business hub or the community and provides a unique identity and charmor the area.
