Today’s Learning Outcome
By the end of this workshop you should be able to…
Understand the relationship between Learning Outcomes and Success Criteria
Learning Outcomes
• What are they?
• When/how can we use them?
Definition:Simple, specific statements which should derive from programmes of study.
What teachers want pupils to have learned or be able to do by the end of a lesson or series of lessons.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learning Outcomes – Task 1
• You will work in groups to find out what legislation [laws] commonly affects Employers and Employees in the workplace and be able to present your findings to your classmates via a PowerPoint presentation.
Learning Outcomes – Task 1
You will be able to…
• confidently explain that melting is the process where a solid turns into a liquid and freezing is the process where a liquid turns into a solid.
Learning Outcomes – Task 1
PE
Pupils will…
• be able to swim front crawl with an efficient leg kick
Learning Outcomes – Task 1
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Pupils will….
• be able to design a box
Learning Outcomes – Task 1
SCIENCE
Pupils will…
• understand what melting is
Task 2
• Write down three Learning Outcomes for your own subject, which fit this definition.
Creating Success Criteria
What is it pupils need to do to achieve the Learning Outcome?
What skills or points do I have to teach so that pupils will achieve the Learning Outcome?
What criteria could I use to measure how successful a pupil has been in achieving a Learning Outcome?
SUCCESS CRITERIA
Definition: Success Criteria are
statements of standards from which success in an activity can be measured.
Success Criteria are summary statements which illustrate exactly what it is that pupils must know/be able to do to achieve Learning Outcome.
Learning Outcome + Possible Success Criteria
SCIENCESLO – Pupils will understand what melting
is.
Possible Success Criteria:Pupils can describe melting, making the
following points:• Melting involves solids turning into
liquids.• The particles in the solid move further
apart.• Heat is required for melting to happen.• Different solids melt at different
temperatures.
Learning Outcome + Possible Success Criteria
PELO - Pupils will be able to swim front
crawl with an efficient leg kick
Possible Success Criteria• Legs will be straight and toes pointed• Legs will reach a depth of
approximately 18 inches and will only create a bubble at the surface.
• Legs will pass close together.• Body position will be flat and will not
rotate.
Task 3
Choosing one of your own Learning Outcomes and using your definition of Success Criteria, write down the possible Success Criteria you could use to measure pupil success.
